<p>With a chance to strut their climate commitments at COP27 talks, clothing brands and manufacturers discussed global warming -- but some admitted that their pledge to halve emissions by 2030 and reach net zero by mid-century might be a stretch.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Are we there yet? Of course not. Are we on track? I would say ... maybe," Stefan Seidel, senior head of sustainability at Puma, told a panel at the COP27 in the Egyptian seaside resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.</p>

<p>Greenpeace and other groups have urged the sector -- already under fire for often exploitative labour practices -- to slow down or end the wasteful trend of mass-producing low-cost clothes that are quickly thrown away.</p>

<p>Fast fashion, they charge, uses up massive amounts of water, produces hazardous chemicals and clogs up landfills in poor countries with textile waste, while also generating greenhouse gases in production, transport and disposal.</p>

<p>The fashion sector was responsible for four per cent of global emissions in 2018 -- about the same as Britain, France and Germany combined -- according to the McKinsey consultancy firm.</p>

<p>Some 30 firms -- from retail giants H&amp;M and Zara owner Inditex to sports apparel rivals Adidas and Nike -- signed up to the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action at the COP24 summit in Poland in 2018.</p>

<p>At the time they pledged to cut emissions by 30 per cent by 2030 and to be net-zero emitters by mid-century.</p>

<p>A year ago they set the new, more ambitious goal of slashing their CO2 emissions by half by the end of the decade, with more than 100 companies now signatories to the pledge.</p>

<p>But meeting the target is a major challenge for an industry with long and complex supply chains that span the globe, industry insiders admit.</p>

<p><strong>- 'Difficult and costly' -</strong></p>

<p>Industry figures at COP27 barely mentioned the "fast fashion" business model, which critics say is at the heart of the problem, focussing instead on ideas around the use of renewable energy in factories and regulation.</p>

<p>But greening the entire supply chain and introducing climate-friendly standards among suppliers of raw materials and factories is a monumental task.</p>

<p>Leyla Ertur, head of sustainability at H&amp;M, said the Swedish firm has more than 800 suppliers.</p>

<p>And Marie-Claire Daveu, sustainability chief at Kering Group, which owns luxury brands Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, said: "Even us, we're not big enough to change all the supplies chains. That's why collaboration is key."</p>

<p>Ali Nouira, an Egyptian manufacturer, told another COP27 panel that certification bodies do not even exist in the region.</p>

<p>"When we manufacture, we need to have all the right certifications and the carbon footprints and all that, and for a small brand coming out from Egypt that is extremely difficult and also costly," Nouira said.</p>

<p>"We also manufacture for other brands, in Europe and other places," he said. "And we're pressured to have the certifications and also to go down with our prices, so they can continue to make the profits they make."</p>

<p><strong>- 'Leap of faith' -</strong></p>

<p>Nicholas Mazzei, head of environmental sustainability at online retailer Zalando, said there had been a culture change in developed countries, with banks offering lower interest rates to companies that commit to a net-zero target.</p>

<p>"If you make that transformation, you may end up paying nothing because the loans are so low the costs are basically free," Mazzei said.</p>

<p>But suppliers face big costs as sewing clothes in factories requires more energy than that used by retail stores at the end of the supply chain.</p>

<p>"We need, at a far bigger scale, more renewable energy than brands do," said Catherine Chiu, vice president of corporate quality and sustainability at Kong Kong firm Crystal International Group.</p>

<p>"Even if we install solar panels in all of our 20 plants, that would only represent 17 per cent of the energy consumption of the group," she said.</p>

<p>Delman Lee, vice chair for sustainability at TAL Apparel, another Hong Kong garment manufacturer, said it has been decarbonising its operations for a decade.</p>

<p>But with subsidiaries in countries including Vietnam and Ethiopia, it is complicated to navigate the different regulations, Lee said.</p>

<p>Aiming to become a net-zero business "is a leap of faith commitment," Lee said. "You commit to something you don't know how to achieve."</p>

The actress also opened up about her struggles with epilepsy and asked&nbsp;others to share their stories, struggles, and challenges on her social media account.</p>

<p>Taking to her Instagram stories,&nbsp;Fatima wrote, "It's epilepsy month. Share your story, struggle, challenges Or just ask. (sic)" In another post, she revealed when she first got to know about her health condition.</p>

<p>Replying to a fan who asked how and when she got to know about her epilepsy diagnosis, the actress said, "(I) was diagnosed when I was training for 'Dangal'. I got an episode and woke up straight at the hospital... (I) was in denial first (for five years). And now, I have learnt to embrace it, and work and live around it. (sic)"</p>

<p>When asked how she has been working with this condition, Fatima shared that she informs all of her directors about her condition and keeps them informed. "They have always been very supportive and understanding. They know of the challenges they might face on the days I get an episode," Fatima shared.</p>

<p>The sequel demolished the record for a November opening, soaring past the previous high-water mark of $158 million set by 2013's 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire'. Globally, the superhero adventure netted a monstrously good $330 million, with $150 million of that figure coming from 55 overseas markets, 'Variety' adds.</p>

<p>With an opening weekend as rock-solid as this one, 'Wakanda Forever' is not very far from the 10th position in the Hollywood Top 10 grossers list for 2022. The present occupant of that position is the Tom Holland-Mark Wahlberg-starrer 'Uncharted' at $401.7 million on a list that is topped by 'Top Gun: Maverick' ($1.486 billion).</p>

<p>The world will be watching closely to see how high 'Wakanda Forever' rises on the list, especially because, to quote 'Variety', the film's success has a bittersweet undercurrent.</p>

<p>The filmmakers faced a shocking off-screen tragedy before production even commenced when Chadwick Boseman, the actor who had given 2018's 'Black Panther' so much of its soul, died in 2020 from cancer. He was only 43 years old.</p>

<p>In response, Ryan Coogler, the film's director and co-writer, re-fashioned 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' into a tribute for the late actor. In the movie, the kingdom of Wakanda is grappling with the death of King T'Challa -- an art-imitates-life situation that gave the film greater emotional resonance.</p>

<p>Ranveer Singh is a method actor and he is known to immerse himself deep into the character's skin to deliver groundbreaking performances. And, that is exactly what he did for his&nbsp;2018 historical drama 'Padmaavat', helmed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Recently, while having a candid conversation at Marrakech International Film Festival, Ranveer opened up about the&nbsp;extreme measures he used to take to get into a character, early on in his career, before he developed his acting skills.</p>

<p>Talking about his film 'Lootera' and how he played a character that gets shot in the leg, he revealed that he went to great lengths to physically replicate the pain and get the right look for the shot. He shared that he would use industrial-grade clips to hurt himself and replicate the physical pain one feels after getting shot.</p>

<p>"I used to take these very industrial grade clips and clip them to my hip in the morning, do hair and make-up, and then travel to set. It would collect all of this blood and be very tender… When they said, roll camera, I would hit it and pain would go from the tip of my toe to my hip. I was actually recreating that degree of physical pain because I did not know how to do it," Singh shared.</p>

<p>The B-towner then moved on to his 2018 film 'Padmaavat' and shared how he channelled the evil Sultan Alauddin Khilji, who allegedly committed genocide and killed thousands in battles.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"This was a bit harmful, this character,"&nbsp;said Singh. "Trying to create Khilji, I couldn’t wrap my head around a person who allegedly committed genocide. The kind of things I read about this guy and what he did is unimaginable. I was asking myself how can I play this with conviction. They say he killed 30,000 soldiers and made a giant pillar of all their skulls to deter invaders from coming down that path again."</p>

<p>Singh had to rent&nbsp;a small flat in the suburbs to prep for the role. He would&nbsp;read about tyrants and subject himself to dark-themed music and films to get into the Khilji zone.</p>

<p>"I locked myself in the apartment for the longest amount of time. I was watching Lars Von Trier films, listening to Krzysztof Penderecki’s soundtrack from The Shining. I was only engaging with these very dark and disturbing themes," Singh shared. "I watched Nymphomaniac 1 &amp; 2 back-to-back. I’d shut the lights and I’d play The Shining soundtrack and try to feel the music, I was doing all sorts of crazy things to get in touch with whatever darkness might be residing in me – I believe everyone had a bit of darkness in them. Do that from morning to night, around the clock for long enough and you become an animal."</p>

<p>Speaking of the diet he followed while filming the SLB film, Singh said, "It was a tough period. I changed my diet, to start with the gut. I ate meat morning, at lunchtime and night. I was sweating mutton. It made me a very aggressive person. I don’t think I was a very pleasant person to be around."</p>
