This crackdown comes as Chinese President Xi Jinping has taken several measures to tighten control over China's financial sector as part of broader efforts to address financial risks, ensure stability in the Chinese economy, and consolidate his power.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 64-year-old Wang received a death sentence with a two-year reprieve, after which he will serve a life sentence without the possibility of commutation or parole, media reports said. This judgment was delivered by an intermediate court in Jinan, located in China's eastern Shandong province on Tuesday (September 12).&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Corruption charges</strong></h2>

<p>The court found Wang guilty of accepting approximately 325 million yuan ($44.6 million) in bribes and concealing overseas deposits worth 56.4 million yuan ($7.8 million).</p>

<h2><strong>Court ruling</strong></h2>

<p>“The amount of bribes Wang Bin accepted was particularly huge, the circumstances of the crime were particularly serious and the social impact was particularly bad,” the ruling said.</p>

Head of China's largest insurance firm sentenced to life in jail amid crackdown on corruption

<p>China's appointment of Ambassador Zhao Sheng to Afghanistan has sent ripples through the global diplomatic arena. After the Taliban's resurgence following the withdrawal of US forces, China became the first country to officially appoint a new ambassador to Kabul.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ahmad Nader Nadery, a Senior Fellow at the Wilson Center, and&nbsp;Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institute of Stanford, and one of Afghanistan's former peace negotiators&nbsp;in Doha talks, spoke to WION about China's motivations and strategic interests in Afghanistan.</p>

<h2><strong>China's economic ambitions&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Nadery underscored the economic interests driving China's engagement with Afghanistan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"For long, China had its eyes on Afghanistan’s natural resources. Especially of rare earth minerals, iron, and copper. It encouraged its private sector to seek concessions from the Taliban on medium and large-size mines. While Afghanistan was not initially an essential part of the Belt and Road Initiative, it has become an essential part of the focus for mining purposes."</p>

<h2><strong>Uyghur security concerns&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Nadery also spoke to WION about China's security concerns, in regards to anti-China Uyghur groups. China wants Afghanistan to stop these Uyghur groups from causing trouble as it believes that since these groups&nbsp;want to free Xinjiang, they can cause instability for Beijing in the region.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While China previously cooperated with the Afghan Republic on security matters, the Taliban's reluctance to engage to the same extent has prompted China to recalibrate its approach, Nadery pointed out.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Uyghur militant groups have been a key topic of China’s interaction with the Afghan government in the past two decades. There has been security cooperation with the Afghan Republic on the violent actors including Uyghurs, but the Taliban seems to be unwilling to cooperate with China to the extent they want. In my view, China pursues strategic interests in Afghanistan and believes it&nbsp;can achieve it through the Taliban. First is access to vast natural resources and second is security in relation to Uyghurs."&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Geopolitical rivalry&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Nadery also placed China's actions in the broader context of escalating US-China rivalry.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Afghanistan's rare earth resources have become yet another battleground in the global competition between these superpowers. While engaging with the Taliban, China remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding its strategic interests.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"A third element has emerged in the past two years and that is the US-China escalating rivalry," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>So, engaging with Taliban wrong or right?&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Nadery&nbsp;also provides&nbsp;a valuable perspective on China's calculated moves in Afghanistan and their implications for the region and the world at large.</p>

<p>"The last two years show that engagement with the Taliban would not change their behaviour. It gives them more reason to remain unchanged and uncommitted to the demands of the international community. While having an ambassador-level head of mission in Kabul and not officially recognising the Taliban, China indicated that it’s there only to protect its strategic interests in the areas I have mentioned," he said.</p>

<h2><strong>A milestone for China?&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>While some might perceive Ambassador Zhao Sheng's appointment as a diplomatic milestone, Nadery reminds that it is part of China's ongoing diplomatic engagement, not an outright recognition of the Taliban regime.</p>

<p>"In my view, it’s not an elevation of diplomatic relations between China and the Taliban. China’s ambassador, like Turkey, Iran, and Pakistan, continued their diplomatic presence with their ambassadors stationed in Kabul. However, with the ambassador’s term ending, this was the first to present the credentials to the Taliban's de facto prime minister."</p>

<p>Danuri, orbiting the Moon at an altitude of approximately 100 kilometers, successfully photographed Chandrayaan-3's landing site, offering a bird's-eye view of the lunar surface. This landing site, 'Shiv Shakti Point,' is located approximately 600 kilometers from the Moon's South Pole.</p>

<p>Chandrayaan-3, India's lunar exploration mission, achieved a historic landing on the lunar surface on August 23.</p>

<p>The rover has been diligently conducting extensive research and data collection, with a primary focus on analysing the composition of the Moon's soil and atmosphere.</p>

<p>The Chandrayaan-3 mission commenced on July 14, lifting off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. It successfully entered lunar orbit on August 5th, and on August 17th, the lander module separated from the propulsion module.</p>

<h2><strong>Danuri's ongoing lunar exploration</strong></h2>

<p>Korea's lunar probe, Danuri, has a mission timeline that extends until December 2025. During this period, it will conduct various scientific and technological missions, including photographing potential lunar landing sites and measuring the lunar magnetic field to gain insights into the Moon's origin.</p>

<p>Associate Fellow at ORF think tank, Aditya Gowdara Shivamurthy, spoke to WION and provided valuable insights into the potential implications for the Maldives' foreign policy, particularly in relation to India, and the dance of alliances among key players.</p>

<h2><strong>India-out campaign&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>One of the central questions looming over this election is the future of India-Maldives relations if the pro-China presidential candidate of the opposing PPM-PNC coalition Mohamed Muizzu, who took the lead in the first round of elections, secures victory over ruling Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.</p>

<p>Muizzu's association with the India-out campaign has raised concerns, but the situation is nuanced. Aditya Shivamurthy explained that Muizzu's stance on India has appeared to be diluted during the campaign in comparison to the stance of Yameen.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While he was once aligned with the India-out campaign, his recent actions suggest a shift away from anti-Indian rhetoric.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, the absence of India-out campaign T-shirts and reduced prominence in anti-India protests indicate a possible softening of his stance, the expert told WION.&nbsp;However, there is an indirect reference to India in all his campaigns as he has called for foreign soldiers to leave the country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This change, Shivamurthy suggested, could be attributed to Muizzu's desire to forge alliances with other parties, including the Democrats, led by Mohamed Nasheed.</p>

<p>"That said, he has continued to be a good advocate for good relations with China. He has also said that once he comes to power he will he will have more people-to-people contacts and bringing-in more Chinese tourists to the Maldives so that story always exists. He has always been a pro-China guy and it continues to be that way unless there is something&nbsp;substantial that happens," the expert said.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Nasheed as king-maker&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>None of the candidates managed to secure more than 50 per cent of the vote required for a first-round victory held on September 9.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Former President and current Speaker of the People's Majlis (parliament), Mohamed Nasheed, who had previously parted ways with the ruling Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) to form his own party, The Democrats, has emerged as a pivotal figure leading up to the runoff.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Democrats secured a third-place finish in the initial round, prompting both President Solih's MDP and the PPM to seek Nasheed's support.&nbsp;His support may play a crucial role in determining the election's outcome.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Aditya Shivamurthy said that the second round is where the real political manoeuvring takes place, as parties and candidates strive to secure support and form strategic alliances.</p>

<p>The ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has signalled its willingness to engage with the Democrats, indicating a potential alliance.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the expert said, "The Democrats have not shown anything as such probably the Democrats trying to indicate that the MDP has been at a loss by losing Nasheed. They have not yet made it clear if they want to join the MDP or PPM. They are still keeping their options open."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, Democrat member Mohamed Nasheed has reportedly also hinted that he may be considering the possibility of supporting Muizzu of the PPM-PNC coalition. But it is yet to be seen how things pan out.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On this, the expert said, "Surprisingly this time the Democrats are the king-makers, Nasheed is the king-maker, and Qasim and other players are far beyond the race."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The political landscape also includes other candidates, such as Qasim Ibrahim from the Jumhooree Party, Umar Naseer as an independent presidential candidate.</p>

<p>Their positions and alliances are yet to crystallize fully.</p>

<p>MNP's leader Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim on Tuesday (September 12) joined hands with the opposition PPM-PNC coalition.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The expert said what's noteworthy is that the MDP had previously built "a kind of fortress where they didn't really interact with other parties much."</p>

<p>"In the initial days, when Nasheed split and the coalition was breaking apart MDP made sure that they had the Maldives development alliance on their side, the Adhaalath Party on their side but apart from those two parties they never really had this vigour to reach out to other parties and build up broader coalition."&nbsp;</p>

<p>On the other hand, he noted, "PPM, the Democrates, the Jumhooree Party and other independent candidates they consistently met each other... try to keep negotiations open."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Here is where I see the progressive alliance being on a bit of an advantage," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Maldivian presidential elections</strong></h2>

<p>During the first round of elections, Mohamed Nasheed's proxy candidate, Ilyas Labeeb, who garnered 15,839 votes, accounting for 7.18 per cent of the total secured the third position.</p>

<p>Notably, the independent candidate Umar Naseer emerged as the closest competitor to The Democrats, amassing less than half the votes secured by Nasheed's party, with a total of 6,343 votes, representing 2.87 per cent of the vote share.</p>

<p>Qasim Ibrahim from the Jumhooree Party, a familiar face in the race, lagged behind the independent candidate Umar Naseer, suggesting a decline in his popularity compared to previous elections.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ibrahim secured only 5,460 votes, making up 2.47 per cent of the total votes.</p>

<p>The Maldivian National Party's Mohamed Nazim, who positioned himself as the leader of the 'Indians-out' campaign, failed to gain significant traction and received only 1,907 votes, accounting for 0.86 per cent of the total votes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It's worth noting that in the upcoming second round, only the candidates who placed first and second will compete for the presidency.</p>

Pennsylvania prison break: Fugitive convicted murderer captured after two-week manhunt

<p>Airbus Defence and Space has officially handed over the first of the 56 C295 transport aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF). This marks the commencement of the delivery phase of the project, valued at Rs 21,935 crore, which was finalised two years ago as part of India's broader efforts to modernise its air assets.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, accepted the aircraft at Airbus's production facility located in the southern Spanish city of Seville.&nbsp;"The delivery of the first aircraft has been ahead of schedule by 10 days," the IAF chief said in Spain&nbsp;after receiving keys of the C295 aircraft from Airbus.</p>

<p>The C295 is renowned for its versatility and is employed for various purposes, including the tactical transport of up to 71 troops or 50 paratroopers, as well as logistics operations in areas that are inaccessible to heavier aircraft.</p>

<p>In May, the first C295 aircraft built for India successfully completed its maiden flight in Seville. The second aircraft is currently in the final assembly stage at the Seville facility, with delivery to the IAF scheduled for May next year.</p>

<p>Extensive training for six IAF pilots and 20 technicians has already taken place at the Seville facility, while the final assembly line in Vadodara is expected to become operational in November next year.</p>

Airbus Defence and Space has officially handed over the first of the 56 C295 transport aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF). This marks the commencement of the delivery phase of the project, valued at Rs 21,935 crore, which was finalised two years ago as part of India's broader efforts to modernise its air assets.
