US auto workers threaten to 'amp up' historic strike if wage offers do not improve

<p>The Group of 77 developing countries (G77)+China recently concluded a two-day summit in Havana, Cuba, where they advocated for a new global order, media reports said. The group was established in 1964 and was initially aimed to promote the collective economic interests of the Global South and has now grown to include 134 member nations.</p>

<p>Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, who currently chairs the grouping, reportedly stated that after years of the North organising the world to suit its interests, "It is now up to the South to change the rules of the game."&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Global challenges&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Diaz-Canel highlighted that developing countries are facing a multifaceted crisis in the contemporary world. He said that it encompasses issues such as unfair trade practices and the global climate crisis.</p>

<p>United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres echoed these concerns, noting that developing nations find themselves entangled in various global crises, including climate change and mounting foreign debt.</p>

<p>In the aftermath of heavy rains brought by Mediterranean storm Daniel, eastern Libya experienced widespread flooding. This led to the collapse of two dams near the port city of Derna earlier in the week, resulting in severe damage to a quarter of the area, which was subsequently declared a disaster zone.</p>

<p>Media reports quoting&nbsp;Libya's Attorney General Al-Siddiq Al-Sour said that decades-old studies revealed cracks in the two dams. The dams were primarily built to safeguard the city from floods.</p>

<p>These studies indicated cracks and subsidence that could have eventually led to dam collapse, said Al-Sour.</p>

Libya dam collapse: Probe launched into allocation of maintenance funds

<p>Several ruling and opposition parties on Sunday made a strong pitch for the passage of the women’s reservation bill during the five-day parliament session beginning Monday.</p>

<p>At an all-party meeting convened by the government on the eve of the session, several leaders said the long-pending bill should be tabled and hoped that it could be passed with consensus.</p>

<p>The bill seeks to reserve one-third of all seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.</p>

<p>However, some regional parties demanded quota for backward classes and Scheduled Castes within the overall reservation for women, sources said. This has been a key sticking point in the passage of the bill earlier.</p>

<p>“All opposition parties demanded the passage of women’s reservation bill in this Parliament session,” Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said.</p>

<p>BJP ally and NCP leader Praful Patel said, “We appeal to govt to pass the women’s reservation bill in this parliament session.” “We are hopeful that women’s reservation bill will be passed with consensus if tabled in parliament,” he added.</p>

<p>Patel also said that the parliament will shift to the new building on the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi on Tuesday.</p>

<p>BJD leader Pinaki Misra said a new era should begin from the newparliament building and the women’s reservation bill should be passed.</p>

<p>Chowdhury told reporters that the government had informed them it was a regular session of Parliament.</p>

<p>“Only the government knows what its intention is. It may surprise everyone with some new agenda,” he said, adding that issues such as price rise, unemployment, and the situation on the border with China were raised by his party in the meeting.</p>

<p>Several regional parties including the BJD and the BRS also pushed for tabling of the women’s reservation bill.</p>

As a result, SBI has decided to take a more personal approach by visiting these borrowers unannounced at their homes.</p>

<p>This move comes as retail lending in the banking system is on the rise, accompanied by an increase in delinquency levels due to rising interest rates.</p>

<p>In the June 2023 quarter, SBI's retail loan portfolio grew by over 16.46 per cent to ₹12,04,279 crore from ₹10,34,111 crore in the previous year.</p>

<p>This makes retail loans the largest asset class for SBI, which has a total book size of ₹33,03,731 crore, growing at a rate of 13.9 per cent&nbsp;year-on-year.</p>

<p>Ashwini Kumar Tewari, managing director in-charge of risk, compliance, and stressed assets at SBI, reportedly said,&nbsp;"With two fintech firms which use artificial intelligence, we are piloting a novel way of reminding our retail borrowers of their repayment obligations. While one is doing conciliation with borrowers, the other is alerting us on the propensity of a borrower to default. And to such borrowers who are likely to default, the representatives from this fintech will visit them, carrying a pack of chocolates for each of them, and remind them of the forthcoming EMIs."&nbsp;</p>

<p>U.N. nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi on Saturday condemned Iran's "disproportionate and unprecedented" move to bar multiple inspectors assigned to the country, hindering its oversight of Tehran's atomic activities.</p>

<p>Iran's move is a response to a call led by the United States, Britain, France and Germany at the International Atomic Energy Agency's Board of Governors this week for Tehran to cooperate immediately with the IAEA on issues including explaining uranium traces found at undeclared sites.</p>

<p>Grossi made clear, however, that he believed Iran had overreacted.</p>

<p>Iran's move, known as "de-designation" of inspectors, is allowed; member states can generally veto inspectors assigned to visit their nuclear facilities under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and each country's safeguards agreement with the agency governing inspections.</p>

<p>But the IAEA said Tehran's decision went beyond normal practice. It said Iran had told it that it would bar "several" inspectors, without giving a number.</p>

<p>Iran defended its move and accused the United States, Britain, France and Germany of politicising the IAEA watchdog.</p>

<p>"Unfortunately, despite Iran's positive, constructive and continuous interaction of the with the agency, the three European countries and the United States abused the (IAEA's) Board of Governors for their own political purposes," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani told state media.</p>

<p>"Of course, Iran will continue its positive cooperation within the framework of the agreements that have been made, and emphasise the necessity of the agency's neutrality," he added.</p>
