Workers at Twitter's Asia-Pacific headquarters in Singapore have been asked to empty their desks and work remotely as the social media giant is said to have failed to pay the monthly rent. A person familiar with developments told news agency Bloomberg that Twitter employees were informed by an email on Wednesday (January 11) that they had until 5 pm to leave the CapitaGreen building in Raffles Place, Singapore and resume their duties remotely from Thursday. The person added that Singapore-based staffers are now reassigned as remote workers in Twitter's internal system until further notice.

Early Friday, Casey Newton from the Platformer tweeted that landlords walked the social media giant's employees out of the building in Singapore.

"I'm told Twitter employees were just walked out of its Singapore office — its Asia-Pacific headquarters — over nonpayment of rent. Landlords walked employees out of the building," Newton said.

However, a spokesperson for CapitaLand, the owner of Twitter’s Singapore offices, told Bloomberg that the social media company “remains a tenant at CapitaGreen.”

Twitter is facing one problem after another since Elon Musk became the owner in October last year. The New York Times reported last month that Twitter stopped paying millions of dollars in rent and services. At its Seattle office (in the United States), the company stopped paying rent along with cutting janitorial and security services. The cancellation of janitorial services forced employees to bring their toilet paper to the office.

A similar situation was seen at Twitter's headquarters in San Francisco, where the absence of janitors left the office in disarray. The New York Times report said that bathrooms had gone dirty and the smell of leftover takeout food and body odour lingered on the floors. Here too, employees were seen bringing their rolls of toilet paper from home.

Twitter is currently facing multiple lawsuits over unpaid bills, including for private chartered plane flights, software services and rent. At its San Francisco headquarters, the company has been sued as it failed to pay $136,250 rent for office space, a report by news agency IANS on Thursday said. After becoming the owner, Elon Musk converted rooms at the headquarters into small bedrooms which had giant work monitors, unmade mattresses and drab curtains. These bedrooms were created for "hardcore" staffers to be able to stay overnight at the office.

Indian automaker start-up Vayve Mobility on Wednesday (January 11) unveiled a prototype of what it called the country's first solar-powered electric vehicle, as India's biennial car show kicked off on the outskirts of New Delhi after a year-long postponement due to Covid-19.

Named "Eva", the two-seater smart car comes with solar panels on its roof to provide additional charging on top of a battery pack, allowing the vehicle to run for up to 10 km (6.2 miles) a day, Vayve Mobility's chief operating officer Vilas Deshpande told Reuters. The company planned to launch the vehicle in the market in approximately 18 months, he added.

Sri Lanka's Supreme Court on Thursday (January 12) ordered former President Maithripala Sirisena to pay $273,334 (100 million Sir Lankan Rupees) as compensation to the victim fund of the 2019 Easter bombings for his negligence in preventing one of the worst terror strikes in the country despite having credible information of an imminent attack.

A seven-member bench while delivering its judgment relating to 12 fundamental rights petitions said that Easter Sunday was just a few weeks away when the heads-up about the imminent attack came from India, but there was little alertness or perceptiveness shown by officials to carry out any measures to safeguard any of the churches across the country, a report by news agency PTI said. These 12 petitioners included families of the victims, the Catholic clergy, and the lawyers' body Bar Association of Sri Lanka. ALSO READ | #IshiniGate: Sri Lankan influencer accused of siphoning $82,000 raised for Easter attack victims Apart from Maithripala Sirisena, the court also ordered other former top officials to pay compensation to the victims' fund. Sri Lanka's former secretary of defence Hemasiri Fernando has been ordered to pay around $136,062 (50 million Sri Lankan Rupees) while the former Chief of National Intelligence (CNI) Sisira Mendis will pay $27,212 (10 million Sri Lankan Rupees) as compensation. Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundera and the former Director of the State Intelligence Service (SIS) Nilantha Jayawardene were ordered to pay $204,093 (75 million Sri Lankan Rupees) each to the victims' fund. Each victim is to be paid $2,721 (one million Sri Lankan Rupees), said an IANS report on Thursday. Easter attacks: 269 killed, at least 500 injured On April 21, 2019, three churches Negombo, Batticaloa and the capital Colombo and three luxury hotels in Colombo were targeted in a series of Islamic State-related suicide bombings. On the same day, there were smaller explosions at a housing complex in Dematagoda and a guest house in Dehiwala. A total of 269 people, including 45 foreigners, were killed in these attacks while at least 500 were injured. The attack caused a political storm in Sri Lanka as former President Maithripala Sirisena and former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe were blamed for their inability to prevent the attacks despite prior intelligence being made available. At that time, Sirisena appointed a presidential panel of inquiry after the attacks. The panel ironically found him guilty of his failure to prevent the bombings. However, Sirisena pleaded not guilty to the charge in the case filed after the panel's findings. Sharif's visit comes as Pakistan is facing an economic crisis because of many factors including political instability, depleting forex reserves and high inflation. Last year's devastating floods, which killed at least 1,700 people and displaced around eight million, have further added to the economic pressure.

On Monday (January 9), international donors in Geneva committed more than $9 billion to help Pakistan recover from the floods. Prime Minister Sharif termed the financial pledges as a testament to his government's credibility.

Meanwhile, Pakistan's negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have not reached any positive outcome yet. The Shehbaz Sharif government has been asking a team from the IMF to come, review and approve the ninth assessment to release the next tranche of $1.1 billion. The IMF's plan is being seen as the only way forward for Pakistan. On Wednesday, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said the government will take fiscal measures set by the IMF to meet its budgetary targets for the 2022-23 financial year, Reuters reported. Dar said some of these measures include subsidies in the farming and export sectors and shedding energy sector debt.

As the economic crisis in Pakistan worsens, the World Bank on Tuesday slashed the country's economic growth by half from 4 per cent to 2 per cent for the current fiscal year, saying the government faces mounting economic difficulties.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) has identified the top five risks faced by economic-crisis-hit Pakistan. In its report — ‘Global Risks 2023’ — the WEF said that debt crisis, sustained and/or rapid inflation, state collapse, failure of cyber security measures and concentration of digital power are the top five risks faced by Pakistan, the Dawn reported on Thursday (January 12). The global forum said that Pakistan is facing a huge threat of hunger and distress amid a prevalent cost-of-living crisis.

The report said that the current cost-of-living crisis might be further aggravated by a combination of extreme weather events and constrained supply. “ (A combination of) extreme weather events and constrained supply could lead the current cost-of-living crisis into a catastrophic scenario of hunger and distress for millions in import-dependent countries or turn the energy crisis towards a humanitarian crisis in the poorest emerging markets” the report added.

The WEF said that affordability and availability of necessities could stoke social and political instability and might also exacerbate instability not just in Pakistan, but in countries such as Tunisia, Ghana, Lebanon and Egypt, which are facing simultaneous food and debt crises.

Amir Jahangir, Chief Executive Officer Mishal Pakistan, the Partners Institute for New Economy and Societies Platforms of the World Economic Forum said the impact of insecurity would continue to be felt in Pakistan and may also exacerbate instability because of simultaneous food and debt crises, resulting in the emergence of a possible more technocracy-based decision-making leadership framework, said a report by Geo News on Thursday.

The WEF identified the cost-of-living crisis as the biggest short-term risk while the failure of climate mitigation and climate adaptation as the largest long-term concern. It also said that water shortage is widespread in Pakistan particularly impacting women and girls responsible for water collection, with impacts on health and education outcomes.

The global forum's observations come as Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will seek a fresh economic package from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during his two-day visit to the middle eastern country.

Many of us would remember the ''Sonam Gupta bewafa hai'' on a Rs 10 note which became a viral meme in the country. Recently an image started circulating that writing anything on rupee notes makes them invalid and they will no longer be legal tender. However, this claim was fake and the central government of India issued a clarification last Sunday (January 8). ALSO READ | India: Supreme Court upholds government’s demonetisation decision with a 4-1 majority What was the fake claim? Taking to Twitter, the government's Press Information Bureau's (PIB) Fact Check wing shared an image of the fake claim which said, "As per new guidelines of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), writing anything on new notes makes the note invalid and it will no more be a legal tender," the claim read. Government's clarification The PIB Fact Check tweeted last Sunday that the claim is fake. "NO, Bank notes with scribbling are not invalid & continue to be legal tender," PIB Fact Check said. However, it pointed out that as per the Clean Note Policy, people are requested not to write on the currency notes as it defaces them & reduces their life. The Clean Note Policy was announced in 1999 by India's central bank- the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). In a statement, the RBI says that the objective of the Clean Note Policy is to give the citizens good quality currency notes and coins while the soiled notes are withdrawn out of circulation. Ever since the policy was announced, several steps were taken for augmenting the supply of currency notes and coins. According to the RBI, people have been urged not to write on the currency notes and banks are instructed to provide unrestricted facilities for the exchange of soiled and mutilated notes. "As per the Reserve Bank instructions, currency chest branches of the banks must offer, even to non-customers, good quality notes and coins in exchange for soiled and mutilated notes," the central bank's statement adds. Around 25,000 ambulance workers in the United Kingdom (UK) also went on a strike on Wednesday (January 11) over pay and working conditions. This is the second time since ambulance workers walked out and a third such strike is expected on January 23. According to a report by news agency Associated Press, health officials warned the impact of Wednesday's strike will be worse than the previous one (in December last year) as more staff members, including call handlers, are walking out.

People have been advised to call in case of any life-threatening emergency such as a cardiac arrest or a serious road accident, and ambulances will respond to such situations, the report said. However, less urgent cases will not be prioritised and some people will have to make arrangements to reach hospitals.

“When people accuse us of putting the public at risk, I would say it is this government that has put the public at risk by refusing consistently to talk to us. There is no offer on the table,” Christina McAnea, general secretary of the UNISON union, told striking workers outside an ambulance station in Sheffield on Wednesday, the report said.

In London, ambulance staff were seen holding placards and banners outside the London Ambulance service.

Wednesday's strikes come two days after talks between trade unions and British ministers failed. Reacting to the walkout (of ambulance workers), Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the ambulance strikes are 'terrifying for patients'.

Referring to the country's '999' emergency services hotline, Sunak told Parliament, "Mr Speaker, what's terrifying is that right now, people not knowing whether when they call nine, nine, nine, they will get the treatment that they need. Now, Mr Speaker in Australia and Canada and the US, they banned strikes on blue light services. We're not doing that. All we're saying is that in these emergency services, patients should be able to rely on a basic level of life-saving care."

Not just ambulance workers, train and bus drivers and postal workers have also joined the strikes, which have been going on for the last few months, to demand better pay. Inflation in the UK has soared to the highest levels since the early 1980s and wages, especially in the public sector, have not kept pace with the skyrocketing cost of living.

Reuters reported on Wednesday that Unison, a trade union representing ambulance workers, said the government had months to intervene and end the dispute but failed to do so. Unison blamed the administration for repeatedly refusing to come to the table for discussions.

A group of scientists have said that the world's oceans were the hottest ever recorded in 2022, exceeding the previous record in 2021. This is the seventh consecutive year that the record has been broken. The records, which started back in 1958, showed an inexorable rise in ocean temperature with an acceleration in warming after 1990, a report by the Guardian on Wednesday (January 11) said. The research, titled - Another Year of Record Heat for the Oceans - said that changes in the ocean heat content (OHC), salinity, and stratification provide critical indicators for changes in Earth’s energy and water cycles.

The research, published in Advances in Atmospheric Sciences on Wednesday, used temperature data collected by a range of instruments across oceans and combined separate analyses by teams from the United States and China to calculate the heat content of the top 2,000 metres.

The research said that these (Earth's energy and water cycles) cycles have been "profoundly altered" because of the emission of greenhouse gases and other anthropogenic substances by human activities, driving pervasive changes in the planet's climate system.

In 2022, oceans were the hottest in the historical record. As per data, the 0–2000 m OHC in 2022 exceeded that of 2021 by 10.9 ± 8.3 ZJ (1 Zetta Joules = 1021 Joules); and according to NCEI/NOAA data, by 9.1 ± 8.7 ZJ. The salinity contrast index also reached its highest level on record last year.

Among seven regions, four basins - the North Pacific, North Atlantic, the Mediterranean Sea, and southern oceans - saw their highest OHC since the 1950s. The regional OHC and salinity changes in 2022 were dominated by a strong La Niña event.

"During a prolonged La Niña event, such as the one witnessed most recently, the tropics cool overall and emit less thermal radiation to space, thereby increasing Earth’s net energy imbalance and OHC," the research said. The La Niña condition 2022 was associated with a vertical heat redistribution - meaning more heat in the subsurface and less heat in the near-surface.

Professor John Abraham from the University of St Thomas in Minnesota, who was a part of the research team told the Guardian, "If you want to measure global warming, you want to measure where the warming goes, and over 90% goes into the oceans." Professor Abraham said that measuring oceans is the most accurate way to determine how out of balance Earth is.
