The Federal Cartel Office — which is Germany's antitrust regulator — on Wednesday (January 11) criticised Google's way of handling users' data and threatened action against the American technological giant. According to a statement, the office sent Alphabet Inc, Google Ireland Ltd, and Google Germany GmbH, its preliminary legal assessment in the proceeding initiated due to Google’s data processing terms. "At this stage of the proceeding, the Bundeskartellamt (the Federal Office) assumes that the new provisions for large digital companies (Section 19a of the German Competition Act, GWB) are applicable and Google thus has to change its data processing terms and its associated practices," the statement said.

Andreas Mundt, the president of the Federal Office, said that Google's practices must be measured against the requirements under the competition rules (for large digital companies), adding, the tech giant has to give users sufficient choice as to how their data is processed.

"Google’s business model relies heavily on the processing of user data. Due to its established access to relevant data gathered from a large number of different services, Google enjoys a strategic advantage over other companies," Mundt highlighted.

The Federal Office said that based on current terms, Google can combine a variety of data from various services and use them to create very detailed user profiles which the company could exploit for advertising and other purposes.

"The company’s terms set out that Google may, for various purposes, collect and process data across services, for example by way of its numerous own, partly very widely used services, such as Google Search, YouTube, Google Play, Google Maps and Google Assistant, but also by way of numerous third-party websites and apps. This also concerns data from Google’s so-called background services, including the Google Play services, which to some extent gather data from Android devices on a regular basis," Wednesday's statement said.

The office reached the preliminary conclusion that users are not given sufficient choice as to whether and to what extent they agree to this far-reaching processing of their data across services. It also pointed out that the choices offered till now, if any, are not sufficiently transparent and too general.

The office is conducting an administrative proceeding against Google. The proceeding may result in the authority discontinuing the case, the company offering commitments or the competition authority prohibiting Google’s practices, the statement added.

Russia responds to Wagner’s claim of control over Soledar, says fight for city ongoing

An official from China's National Health Commission said on Sunday (January 8) that emergency and severe Covid cases may peak in the country's small and medium-sized cities. Jiao Yahui, the NHC official, told state broadcaster CCTV that the demand for emergency and critical care in China's large cities had likely peaked, but the Lunar New Year travel could trigger faster-rising cases in smaller cities and rural areas, news agency Reuters reported.

At a press conference on Sunday, officials from the health commission said they would not rule out the possibility of taking emergency measures to deal with large outbreaks.

A 32-year-old Iranian man was arrested in western Germany on suspicion of planning an attack with deadly chemicals, according to police officials on Sunday (January 8). An official statement said the police officers searched a residence in the Castrop-Rauxel town for "toxic substances" intended to carry out an attack. Several days back, authorities were tipped off about an attack with a chemical bomb by a foreign intelligence service, a report by Bild said. A 32-year-old Iranian man has been arrested from the Castrop-Rauxel town, northwest of Dortmund in Germany on suspicion of planning an attack with deadly chemicals, officials said Sunday. They added that the man is suspected to have planned an attack motivated by Islamic extremism, for which he had obtained the potent toxins cyanide and ricin. The Iranian man, who was arrested shortly before Saturday midnight, was "suspected of having prepared a serious act of violence threatening the security of the state by obtaining cyanide and ricin with a view to committing an Islamist attack," investigators said on Sunday. Ricin, a highly toxic substance, is classified as a chemical weapon in Germany. It can cause death within 36 to 72 hours of exposure, depending on the route of exposure (inhalation, ingestion, or injection) and the dose received, according to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The police also said that another person, said to be the man's brother, has been taken into custody, the AFP report said. Back in 2018, a Tunisian couple was arrested by German authorities on suspicion of planning a biological bomb attack in the country. The couple, who were sympathisers of the Islamic state, possessed 84 milligrams of Ricin in their apartment in Cologne. The man and the woman were sentenced to 10 and eight years imprisonment respectively. The Kenya police on Saturday (January 7) arrested three more suspects in the murder of 25-year-old LGBTQ rights activist Edwin Chiloba. These three suspects have been arrested for their alleged role in disposing of Chiloba's remains, news agency AFP reported on Sunday citing local media. Chiloba's body was found on a roadside stuffed in a metal trunk. His death has sparked nationwide outrage in Kenya with rights groups calling for better protection of members of the LGBTQ community. On Friday, the police arrested a freelance photographer who is said to be a longtime friend of Chiloba. The police said the suspect's role in the murder was being investigated. A post-mortem of Chiloba will be conducted on Monday while his family was preparing for burial on Saturday. Apart from being an LGBTQ activist, Chiloba was also a fashion designer and model. On Friday, the Kenya LGBTQ Feminist Forum said the 25-year-old used fashion to deconstruct gender and advocate for the rights of the marginalised group. Homosexuality is a taboo in Kenya and attempts to overturn British colonial-era laws banning homosexuality have been unsuccessful so far. Gay sex in the country is a punishable offence with penalties including imprisonment of up to 14 years. 'Shaken by Chiloba's murder': UN human rights chief United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk voiced alarm at the murder of Edwin Chiloba. Taking to Twitter on Saturday, Turk said, "Shaken by the murder of human rights advocate Edwin Chiloba, fills me with deep sadness, standing in solidarity with LGBTQI+ activists around the world. Volker further said that there is a need to redouble efforts for the protection of the community. In a statement issued on Saturday, Dersoo said it appeared that Chiloba's killing was a result of hate, and urged the Kenyan government to initiate a "transparent, thorough, and prompt investigation" into the murder and bring those responsible to justice, AFP reported. Dersso also called on other African Union members to ensure that all vulnerable members of the society, "including those who are or are perceived to be different from the mainstream members of society including on account of their sexual or gender identity," are guaranteed to live a life free from the threat of violent attacks. A Chinese tracking device was found hidden in a car of the United Kingdom (UK) government after officials carried out a security check of government and diplomatic vehicles. According to a report by British news outlet inews on Friday (January 6), the tracking device is a SIM card capable of transmitting location data.
