Russian oligarch and former owner of the Chelsea football club Roman Abramovich's 10 offshore trusts, holding assets worth billions of dollars, were transferred shortly before he was hit with sanctions. According to a report by the Guardian on Friday (January 6), Abramovich's seven children became the beneficiaries of these offshore trusts.

They acquired the beneficial ownership of the trusts with assets worth at least $4 billion in early February last year, just three weeks before Russia announced its ''special military operation'' in Ukraine. The Guardian report pointed out that the total value of the assets could be much higher than the aforementioned amount.

Through these 10 trusts, they (Abramovich's children) appear to be the ultimate beneficial owners of various trophy assets long linked to Abramovich, including private jets, helicopters, luxury properties and super yachts.

Dubbed the "Oligarch Files" — the Guardian report, citing leaked documents, on Friday said that of Abramovich's seven children, five are adults and the youngest child is nine years old.

"The leaked documents raise questions about whether the changes to trusts were made in an attempt to shield the oligarch’s vast fortune from the threat of asset freezes," the report added.

Sanctions experts told the newspaper that the sweeping reorganisation of Roman Abramovich's trusts can complicate efforts to enforce sanctions against him and lead to more calls for his children to face asset freezes too.

In March last year, the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU) governments imposed sanctions on Abramovich for allegedly benefitting from close relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Russian oligarch and former owner of the Chelsea football club Roman Abramovich's 10 offshore trusts, holding assets worth billions of dollars, were transferred shortly before he was hit with sanctions.

A flight of Jetstar Airways made an emergency landing at central Japan's Chubu Centrair International Airport on Saturday (January 7) after a bomb threat, though officials said that no explosive or harmful device was found in the search after evacuation. The flight was coming from the Narita airport near Tokyo and was bound for Fukuoka in southern Japan.

Earlier on Saturday, authorities at the Narita airport received an international call from Germany which said that a 100 kilogramme plastic bomb was in the cargo compartment of the flight, said a report by news agency Reuters citing the NHK. A spokesperson from the airport said there was a bomb threat for the flight but the details were unclear.

Jetstar flight makes emergency landing in Japan after bomb threat; five injured during evacuation

The Mexican government said on Friday that 29 people — 10 soldiers and 19 criminal suspects — were killed in the operation to arrest Ovidio Guzman, the son of jailed drug lord El Chapo, the former leader of the Sinaloa cartel. Speaking to reporters, Mexico's secretary of defence Luis Cresencio said, "Ten members of the military... unfortunately lost their lives in the line of duty."

Ovidio Guzman, 32, was caught on Thursday in the Culiacan city and flown to Mexico City on a military plane following six months of intelligence work to track him down, news agency AFP reported.

Guzman had allegedly helped to run El Chapo's operations since he was extradited to the United States in 2017.

The U.S. had put out a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to Ovidio Guzman's capture and accused him of being a key player in the Sinaloa cartel. The U.S. has sought his extradition for years.

Guzman's arrest triggered widespread violence in Mexico. His arrest comes ahead of a visit to Mexico by United States President Joe Biden.

However, this is not the first time that El Chapo's son was arrested. In October 2019, a bungled arrest of Guzman by authorities embarrassed the Mexican government and threw light on the challenges in cracking down on cartels, Reuters reported.

At that time, hundreds of cartel members overwhelmed security forces in Culiacan, with scenes of ensuing urban warfare. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador personally ordered Guzman's release to protect the civilian population.

The government has been waging a war against drug cartels for more than 10 years now. The cartels lead supplies of methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin and many other illicit drugs to the United States. However, the cartels have also established their operations in many European countries including Italy, Germany and France.

More trouble brews for Musk as laid-off Twitter employees still await severance pay

Militants from the Al-Shabaab killed at least six people during a raid early Friday (January 6) in Hilowle Gaab, a village in central Somalia they were pushed out of recently. Somalia's army and allied militiamen had captured Hilowle Gaab from the Al-Shabaab last week, a report by news agency Reuters on Friday said.

The militants attacked the village during morning prayers at 5 am (0200 GMT) with car bombs, Hussein Aden, a spokesperson for the local clan militia told Reuters. Aden said a gunfight ensued during which the militants were repelled, adding the six casualties included soldiers and militiamen.

Meanwhile, a resident of Hilowle Gaab told the news agency on Friday that he was awoken by three deafening blasts on the edge of the village which was followed by a heavy exchange of gunfire. "Fighting has died down. I do not know how many died," Mohamed Hussein, the resident said.

Earlier, the Al-Shabaab said in a statement that it had recaptured Hilowle Gaab and seized military vehicles and weapons. However, this claim was disputed by residents and a local politician.

This attack in central Somalia comes just two days after at least 35 people were killed and 40 others were wounded in twin car bombings in the Mahas district in the Hiran region on Wednesday.

The Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for these blasts. As per witnesses, the blasts in Mahas occurred near a restaurant which is not far from a district administration building.

Somalia has seen many terror attacks in the past and the Al-Shabaab has been waging an insurgency against the government for more than 15 years, in an attempt to enforce its strict interpretation of Islamic law.

Uzbekistan authorities on Friday (January 6) arrested four people in connection with the ongoing investigation of an Indian-made cough syrup blamed for the deaths of 19 children.

Uzbekistan authorities on Friday (January 6) arrested four people in connection with the ongoing investigation of an Indian-made cough syrup blamed for the deaths of 19 children. The cough syrup- Doc-1 Max was manufactured by Indian-based pharmaceutical Marion Biotech. The company has suspended production of all medicines (including Doc-1 Max) at its unit in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Of these deaths in Uzbekistan, 18 children were from the southeastern city of Samarkand and the 19th victim, a one-year-old child, was from the Qashqadaryo region. The other two arrested were executives of Quramax Medikal- a company that imported Marion Biotech's medicines. In December last year, Uzbekistan's health ministry said the cough syrup contained ethylene glycol, a toxic substance, adding it was administered in doses higher than the standard dose for children. The 19 children died due to acute renal failure. Earlier, the government had temporarily suspended sales of all Marion Biotech medicines across Uzbekistan. On December 30, 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that it was in touch with Uzbekistan's authorities and was in the process of gathering information and validating reports regarding the cough syrup deaths. This is the second instance where an Indian pharmaceutical has come under the scanner for children dying after consuming cough syrups. Last year, Maiden Pharmaceuticals was held responsible for the deaths of at least 70 children in Gambia.
