Pope Francis said on Sunday (June 4) that apparitions of the Virgin Mary are not real, in what appeared to be an indirect reference to a woman who drew thousands of pilgrims to a town near Rome to pray before a statue that she claimed shed tears of blood. According to a report by The Guardian, Pope Francis said “There are images of the Madonna that are real, but the Madonna has never drawn [attention] to herself.”

“I like to see her with her finger pointing up to Jesus. When Marian devotion is too self-centred, it’s not good. Both in the devotion and in the people who carry it forward,” Francis added.

Francis' interview was aired a few days after residents in Rome's Trevignano town called on the pontiff to intervene against Maria Giuseppe Scarpulla.

Who is Maria Giuseppe Scarpulla?

For the last five years, Maria Giuseppe Scarpulla has organised monthly ceremonies in a park overlooking Lake Bracciano where a statue of the Virgin Mary sits in a glass case. Nicknamed "the saint" and “clairvoyant”, Scarpulla bought the statue at a Catholic pilgrimage site in Bosnia.

Upon returning to Italy, she claimed the Madonna made apparitions, wept tears of blood and was communicating messages to her. The woman is currently facing a judicial investigation after a private investigator alleged that the blood stains on the statue came from a pig, and some of her followers said they were scammed, The Guardian report said.

Last week, local bishop Marco Salvi urged pilgrims to stop flocking to the site on the third of each month as they have prayed before the statue in search of cures for serious illnesses.

Scarpulla was convicted in the past

Maria Giuseppe Scarpulla has been convicted of bankruptcy fraud. She had created a foundation through which she collected donations, which she reportedly said would go towards setting up a centre for sick children. In April this year, Scarpulla and her husband fled Trevignano after the investigation was opened. Scarpulla said she was undeterred by the probe as well as an order for the glass case to be demolished, the report said.

Twitter's head of trust and safety Ella Irwin resigned on Friday (June 2) after owner Elon Musk endorsed an anti-transgender video shared on the social media platform.

Twitter's head of trust and safety Ella Irwin resigned on Friday (June 2) after owner Elon Musk endorsed an anti-transgender video shared on the social media platform. A post on Irwin's Twitter handle said, "I know there's been a lot of speculation regarding what happened." "I did resign but this has been a once in a lifetime experience and I’m so thankful to have worked with this amazing team of passionate, creative and hardworking people. Will be cheering you all and Twitter as you go!" she tweeted. Irwin is the second head of trust and safety to quit Twitter after Elon Musk took over the social media giant in October last year. Her departure came as Twitter was under pressure from backers of an anti-transgender video called "What Is A Woman" who claimed Twitter went back on a deal to distribute the content free on the platform. Just kidding folks. 😂 There’s no thread. In all seriousness, I did resign but this has been a once in a lifetime experience and I’m so thankful to have worked with this amazing team of passionate, creative and hardworking people. Will be cheering you all and Twitter as you go! — Ella Irwin (@ellagirwin) June 3, 2023 × Backers of this video contended that the video was being suppressed at Twitter for not using people's chosen pronouns when it came to gender identification. Elon Musk said in a Twitter exchange with the conservative outlet behind the video that people made a mistake and the video, while possibly "rude," was not against the law. What is the video about? The video criticises gender and transgender issues. Matt Walsh, the maker of the film travels across the US and Africa posing a simple question: What is a woman? Since taking over Twitter, Musk has repeatedly courted controversy, sacking most employees, suspending journalists and charging money for previously free services among other such measures. In an interview with CNBC last month, Musk said he would continue to tweet his unfiltered thoughts even if it hurt his businesses. A railway board official said on Sunday (June 4) that there was an issue with signalling and only the Coromandel Express met with an accident in Balasore district of India's Odisha state last Friday (June 2) that killed 275 people.

A railway board official said on Sunday (June 4) that there was an issue with signalling and only the Coromandel Express met with an accident in Balasore district of India's Odisha state last Friday (June 2) that killed 275 people. Addressing a press conference, Jaya Varma Sinha, a Member of Operation and Business Development, Railway Board, recalled her interactions with the staff of the Coromandel and Yeshwanthpur Express trains. “I had a conversation with the locomotive driver of Coromandel Express. He was conscious at that time. He said that he received a green signal. After that conversation, his condition is critical. The guard of the goods train was out of the train and was checking it. At that particular time frame, the accident happened. Had he been there in the goods train, there was no chance of him being alive,” Varma said during a press conference on Sunday, the news agency ANI reported. ALSO READ | Here’s how Odisha trains collision occurred: Indian railway officials give minute-by-minute details Varma said that she received information just 15 minutes after the accident took place. "I also talked to the TT of Coach AI of the other train Howrah Yesvantpur Express. He told me that he heard a loud abnormal voice from the back. He felt there was some kind of obstruction. Behind the A1 coach, there were two general coaches and the guard's cabin. The two coaches behind A1 detached completely and were thrown off the tracks, while the A1 coach was safe and moved forward," the official also said on Sunday. Trains cross disaster site as services resume On Sunday, passenger trains crossed in Balasore just days after India's deadliest train crash killed at least 275 people and injured 1,200 others. A preliminary probe indicated the Coromandel Express, heading to Chennai from Kolkata, moved out of the main track and entered a loop track – a side track used to park trains - crashing into the freight train parked on the loop track. That crash caused the engine and the first few coaches of the Coromandel Express to jump the tracks, topple and hit the last two coaches of the Yeshwantpur-Howrah train heading in the opposite direction on the second main track. ALSO READ | Balasore train tragedy: Adani Group to fund education of children who lost their parents in accident After the completion of two days of rescue and repair work, the railway ministry said on Twitter that trains had begun operating on the same route by Sunday evening. Speaking to the news agency Reuters, a railways officer said that trains are required to control their speed and proceed slowly for a certain distance. Earlier, the railways had said that the failure of the track management system was the main focus of the investigation. Railways seek CBI probe The railways on Sunday sought a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the Balasore train crash with officials indicating that possible "sabotage" and tampering with the electronic interlocking system, which detects the presence of trains, led to the accident. "We have recommended a CBI probe into the triple train accident," Railways Minister Ashwini Yadav said, adding the "root cause" of the accident and the people behind the "criminal" act were identified. As the United States announced a visa policy to promote democratic elections in Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said on Saturday (June 3) that there was no use worrying about visas and sanctions. Attending a programme of her Awami League party in Dhaka's Tejgaon area, Prime Minister Hasina said it did not matter at all if someone did not go to the US crossing the Atlantic Ocean on a 20-hour-plane journey.

"There are other oceans and other continents in the world. We will make friends with those continents crossing the other oceans. Our economy will be stronger and more developed and vibrant," Hasina said, according to a report by The Daily Star.

Hasina pointed out that Dhaka would not depend on others, adding, "It's no use worrying about who will not issue us visas or who will impose sanctions on us."

The Prime Minister advised the US to look at the party (in Bangladesh) that rigged votes and played with the fate of the people- referring to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). She mentioned that Canada declared BNP "a terrorist party."

"The USA did not issue a visa to Tarique Zia for terrorism and corruption," Hasina added, as per the report.

What is the visa policy?

Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina's remarks come days after the US announced a new visa policy to support Bangladesh’s goal of holding free, fair, and peaceful national elections.

In a statement on May 24, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, "Under this policy, the United States will be able to restrict the issuance of visas for any Bangladeshi individual, believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic election process in Bangladesh."

"This includes current and former Bangladeshi officials, members of pro-government and opposition political parties, and members of law enforcement, the judiciary, and security services," Blinken said.

The US Secretary of State added that holding free and fair elections is the responsibility of everyone—voters, political parties, the government, the security forces, civil society, and the media.

The above measure comes as the US has accused Bangladesh of political violence, election manipulation and human rights violations. And according to reports, Wahington in recent years has taken actions to pressurise PM Hasina’s government on human rights and warn it against rigging elections.

A day after the visa policy was announced, Bangladeshi authorities said that they would take steps to tackle and prevent unlawful practices or interference in elections.

"The government apparatus will take necessary measures to prevent and address any unlawful practices or interference...to compromise the smooth and participatory conduct of the elections," the Bangladesh foreign ministry said on May 25.

The Indian government has banned 14 fixed-dose combination drugs including nimesulide and paracetamol dispersible tablets and chlorpheniramine maleate and codeine syrup.

The Indian government has banned 14 fixed-dose combination drugs including nimesulide and paracetamol dispersible tablets and chlorpheniramine maleate and codeine syrup. Citing a notification from the Union Health Ministry, the news agency PTI reported on Saturday (June 3) that the government said there is "no therapeutic justification" for these medicines and that they may involve "risk" to people. Which drugs have been banned? The banned drugs include those for treating common infections cough and fever- combinations such as nimesulide + paracetamol dispersible tablets, chlorpheniramine maleate + codeine syrup, pholcodine + promethazine, amoxicillin + bromhexine and bromhexine + dextromethorphan + ammonium chloride + menthol, paracetamol + bromhexine+ phenylephrine + chlorpheniramine + guaiphenesin and salbutamol + bromhexine. The move comes after recommendations by an expert committee. The committee said there is "no therapeutic justification for this FDC (fixed dose combination) and the FDC may involve risk to human beings. Hence, in the larger public interest, it is necessary to prohibit the manufacture, sale or distribution of this FDC under section 26 A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. In view of the above, any kind of regulation or restriction to allow for any use in patients is not justifiable," as per the notification. "And whereas, on the basis of the recommendations of the Expert Committee and the Drugs Technical Advisory Board, the Central Government is satisfied that it is necessary and expedient in public interest to regulate by way of prohibition the manufacture for sale, sale and distribution for human use of the said drug in the country," the notification added. What are FDC drugs? FDC are drugs which contain a combination of two or more active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in a fixed ratio. Back in 2016, the central government announced the ban on 344 drug combinations after an expert panel said they were being sold to patients without scientific data and the order was challenged by the manufacturers in court. The currently banned 14 FDCs are a part of these 344 drug combinations. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. The Ugandan government said on Saturday (June 3) that 54 Ugandan peacekeepers were killed in an attack on a military base in Somalia last week by the militant group al Shabaab. According to a report by the news agency Reuters early Sunday, al-Shabaab militants targeted the base last Friday (May 26) in Bulamarer, around 130 kilometres southwest of Somalia's capital city Mogadishu. The base belonged to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said that the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) had since recaptured the base from the militant group. “Our soldiers demonstrated remarkable resilience and reorganised themselves, resulting in the recapture of the base by Tuesday,” President Museveni added. Last week, Museveni said that there were some Ugandan casualties but did not give further details about the attack on troops, who are serving in the ATMIS. ALSO READ | Al Shabaab militants attack officials' house in Somalia, 10 dead On May 26, the ATMIS said in a statement that al Shabaab hit the base using car and suicide bombers and that airborne reinforcement from the mission and its allies destroyed the militants' weaponry as they withdrew. The militant group also targeted an adjacent base belonging to the Somali military, an officer told Reuters from the Lower Shabelle region. Seventeen killed in clash between Somalia army, al Shabaab Just days after the attack on the ATMIS military base, al-Shabaab attacked another base in Masagawa on Tuesday (May 30), killing 17 people. Captain Abdullahi Mohamed, a military officer in Masagawa, confirmed the attack and said 12 al-Shabaab militants were killed, but he did not know how many troops were dead. On the other hand, Hussein Nur, a resident of Masagawa, told Reuters, "I have seen 17 dead people, including the attackers and the attacked. The fighting has moved into the forest. The town is calm now and under government control." On Twitter, the Somalia army said it had prevented an attack on the town itself, and killed al-Shabaab fighters, but did not say how many. Al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab has been fighting since 2006 to topple Somalia's central government and establish its own rule based on its strict interpretation of Islamic Sharia law. The group has launched attacks against hotels, military bases and government establishments despite a relatively successful government pushback. India's External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar on Saturday (June 3) took a veiled dig at Rahul Gandhi over his comments in the United States earlier this week.

India's External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar on Saturday (June 3) took a veiled dig at Rahul Gandhi over his comments in the United States earlier this week. Addressing Indian-Americans in Santa Clara, Gandhi, the leader of the opposition Congress party called Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a specimen and attacked his government's policies on various issues. Hitting out at Prime Minister Modi, Gandhi said, "I think if you sat Modi ji down next to god Modi ji would start explaining to god how the universe works. And god would get confused that what have I created.” The Congress leader's remarks on Modi were criticised by many ministers and leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Jaishankar's veiled dig at Gandhi On being asked about Rahul Gandhi's remarks, EAM Jaishankar said that there were sometimes things bigger than politics when one steps outside the country. "There are sometimes, things bigger than politics & when you step outside the country, that is important to remember...I differ with them but how I counter it, I would like to go home and do it. Watch me when I get back," Jaishankar said at a diaspora event in Cape Town after attending the meeting of BRICS foreign ministers, the news agency ANI reported. #WATCH | There are things "bigger than politics" when you go abroad, says India's EAM @DrSJaishankar, days after Congress leader #RahulGandhi repeatedly attacked Indian PM Narendra Modi and his government during his visit to the US#SJaishankar #NarendraModi Courtesy: ANI pic.twitter.com/GvlmKIfrsP — WION (@WIONews) June 4, 2023 × Jaishankar added that he could talk for himself and did not do politics while travelling abroad. "I'm perfectly prepared to argue and argue very vigorously at home. Okay, so you will never find me wanting in that regard," he said. ALSO READ | Congress leader Rahul Gandhi backs Modi government's stance on Russia-Ukraine war The EAM further pointed out that even a democratic culture has a collective responsibility. "There is a national interest there is a collective image. There are sometimes things bigger than politics and when you step outside the country, I think that's important to remember," he said. "So I might differ strongly with someone. I could say to you, I differ with them. But how I counter it, I would like to go back home and do it. And watch me when I get back," he added. 'India no longer lumbering around at relatively slow pace' During Saturday's Cape Town event, Jaishankar also said that India was no longer lumbering around at a relatively slow pace and lauded the scale of change taking place in the country. "When it comes to digital, I can assert with a great deal of confidence, that I see practices (and) efficiencies in India which I don't see even if I go to Europe and North America," Jaishankar said. "When we speak about the pace of transformation of these nine years, is really something that I think the Indian community abroad, the non-residents abroad and I would say even the friends and well-wishers of India abroad need to understand is something very powerful and very big that is going on," he added. The EAM also highlighted the achievements of the Narendra Modi government in its nine years in office through policy reforms and actions in various areas to raise the self-reliance of the citizens. "A self-reliant India is not a protectionist India that is closing itself to the world. It is an India that is actually making more in India but making more for the world and making more with the world." The governments of India and China on Wednesday (May 31) held in-person diplomatic talks in New Delhi over the eastern Ladakh row. According to a report by the news agency PTI, the two countries discussed proposals for disengagement in the remaining friction points along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh in a "frank and open manner".

The governments of India and China on Wednesday (May 31) held in-person diplomatic talks in New Delhi over the eastern Ladakh row. According to a report by the news agency PTI, the two countries discussed proposals for disengagement in the remaining friction points along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh in a "frank and open manner". India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that New Delhi and Beijing agreed to hold the 19th round of high-level military talks at an early date to achieve the objective of restoration of peace and tranquillity in the border areas. Wednesday's discussion took place under the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC). The Indian side was led by Joint Secretary (East Asia) from the MEA. The Chinese side, meanwhile, was led by the Director General of the Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, PTI reported. It was the 27th meeting of the WMCC and the previous meeting was held in Beijing on February 22. New Delhi, Beijing reviewed the situation along LAC: MEA In a statement, the MEA said The two sides reviewed the situation along the LAC in the Western Sector of the India-China border areas and discussed proposals for disengagement in the remaining areas in a frank and open manner. "In order to achieve this objective, in accordance with existing bilateral agreements and protocols, they agreed to hold the next (19th) round of Senior Commander's meeting at an early date," the statement added. India and China troops are locked in an over three-year confrontation on certain friction points in eastern Ladakh even as the two sides completed disengagement from several areas following extensive diplomatic and military talks. What happened during the 18th round of talks? The 18th round of military talks between India and China was held on April 23 during which both sides agreed to stay in close touch and work out a mutually acceptable solution to the remaining issues in eastern Ladakh at the earliest. And days later, Chinese Defence Minister Li Shangfu arrived in India to attend a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). On the sidelines of the SCO meeting, Shangfu met his Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh and the two leaders held bilateral talks. Singh told his Shangfu that China's violation of existing border agreements "eroded" the entire basis of ties between the two countries and that all issues relating to the frontier must be resolved in accordance with the existing pacts. The eastern Ladakh border standoff started on May 5, 2020, after a violent clash in the Pangong Lake area. And in June of that year, a violent skirmish between Indian and Chinese troops broke out in the Galwan Valley, resulting in losses on both sides. This was the most serious military conflict between India and China in decades. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong Un's sister Kim Yo Jong on Thursday (June 1) promised more spy satellite launches, a day after Pyongyang launched one such satellite that crashed because of a rocket failure.

North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong Un's sister Kim Yo Jong on Thursday (June 1) promised more spy satellite launches, a day after Pyongyang launched one such satellite that crashed because of a rocket failure. In a statement carried by the KCNA, Yo Jong said it is certain that the military reconnaissance satellite will be correctly put into space orbit shortly and start its mission. KCNA reported that the Chollima-1 rocket, carrying a military reconnaissance satellite known as "Malligyong-1", crashed into the sea. The state media also published on Thursday photographs of what is said was the new rocket lifting off from a coastal launch pad. The white-and-grey rocket had a bulbous nose, apparently for carrying a satellite or other cargo. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, Ankit Panda from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace said the photographs confirmed that the rocket was a new design. "The launch used the new coastal launch pad they've built at Tongchang-ri, so we might see a larger space launch vehicle use the traditional gantry that has seen some work recently," Panda said. Following Wednesday's launch, US-based monitors reported that commercial satellite imagery showed significant activity at the main pad. Kim Yo Jong on criticism of spy satellite launch As the launch was criticised by many including Japan, South Korea, and the US Kim Yo Jong said on Thursday the criticisms were "self-contradiction" as the US and other countries have already launched "thousands of satellites." ALSO READ | South Korea ‘salvaging debris’ of crashed North Korean military spy satellite "The US is a group of gangsters who would claim that even if the DPRK launches a satellite ...it is illegal and threatening," Yo Jong added. Want closer cooperation with US, South Korea to deal with Pyongyang: Japan Japanese Defence Minister Yasukazu Hamada on Thursday told US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin that he wanted closer cooperation with the US and South Korea to deal with North Korea after Wednesday's spy satellite launch failed. During a meeting with Austin in Tokyo, Hamada said, "We need to strengthen ties between Japan and the US and also between Japan, the US and ROK (Republic of Korea), as it is possible that North Korea launches again." Austin, meanwhile, told the Japanese defence minister that he wanted to bolster cooperation between their alliance, South Korea and Australia, as they also face challenges posed by China and Russia, Reuters reported.
