The Balearic Islands called an urgent meeting with Irish low-cost airline Ryanair and the local pastry makers association after Ryanair tried to charge passengers who were bringing cakes onboard, claiming it exceeded their cabin baggage limit.

The Balearic Islands called an urgent meeting with Irish low-cost airline Ryanair and the local pastry makers association after Ryanair tried to charge passengers who were bringing cakes onboard, claiming it exceeded their cabin baggage limit. According to a report by The Guardian on Monday (May 29), two passengers at the Palma de Mallorca airport tried to each carry an ensaïmada- a traditional Mallorcan pastry- along with their hand baggage. Ryanair demanded an additional $48 (€45) to bring these pastries onboard, and the passengers abandoned them rather than paying the extra amount. Meeting to be held this week As per The Guardian report, the meeting between the government of Balearic Islands, Ryanair, and the local pastry makers' association would be held this week. The Balerics' Tourism Minister Iago Negueruela said the meeting was called to defend local produce and avoid any kind of discrimination. Tourism Minister Negueruela hoped that the issue would be resolved during the meeting. 'It's only a problem with Ryanair...': Pastry makers association Pep Magraner, the president of the Balearic Islands pastry-makers association, said that passengers may take onboard ensaïmadas bought at the Palma de Mallorca airport's duty-free shop and that this discriminated against other suppliers. Magraner pointed out that all other airlines allowed passengers to take two ensaïmadas on board. “It’s only a problem with Ryanair, but we’re talking about a lot of flights, especially to the Spanish mainland, which is the destination of most of the ensaïmadas,” the president said. The report said that the issue is part of a wider dispute over the interpretation of what comprises hand luggage. In 2022, the consumer affairs office of the Balearic Islands filed cases against three airlines- easyJet, Eurowings, and Volotea- demanding fines of around $21,413 (€20,000) for charging massive fees for hand baggage. It added that Facua, a consumers' association, levelled similar charges at Vueling and Ryanair. These cases are being considered by the Consumers' Affairs Ministry in Madrid while there is pressure on Spanish airports company Aena to come up with a formula. Over 16,000 people in Canada's eastern province of Nova Scotia were forced to evacuate their homes on Monday (May 29) as one of hundreds of wildfires raging across the country threatened the city of Halifax. A dashcam video showed a family in Nova Scotia escaping the wildfire with flames and smoke on either side of the highway. The video, which was tweeted by the news agency Reuters early Monday, showed embers and red smoke filling the air. Due to low visibility, the car was about to collide with the vehicle in front. The driver applied brakes immediately when the rear headlights of the car were visible. Addressing a press conference, Mayor Savage said, "We have not expanded the (evacuation zone) perimeter since yesterday, which is some hope that perhaps this situation has stabilized. But it is a dangerous situation." Winds which fanned the flames changed directions on Monday, pushing the Halifax wildfire back in the direction it had come from. Citing officials, AFP reported that significant rain was needed to bring the wildfire in Nova Scotia province under control, and there was no forecast of rain this week. On Monday, wildfires were burning in eight out of 13 Canadian provinces and territories. A few days back, the Canadian government called for international help to combat the wildfires. On May 17, Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Center was reaching out to the United States, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand. Nobel Peace Prize winner and Filippino-American journalist Maria Ressa has compared Facebook's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mark Zuckerberg to a dictator. Speaking to the BBC last Saturday (May 27), Ressa said that Facebook is a threat to democracy and that social media users are handcuffed to it. "The rise of the former Philippine president Duterte, illiberal leaders, and the destruction of our institutions within six months, was hand in hand with the power of Facebook." Talking about her book "How to stand up to a Dictator", which was published last year, Ressa asked, "Which dictator am I talking about? Who has greater power? (former) president Duterte in the Philippines or Mark Zuckerberg in Facebook?" Ressa also mentioned a 2018 study done by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) which said that false news travel faster than true stories. Nobel Peace Prize winner has been critical of Facebook Maria Ressa won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021. She is the co-founder of Rappler- the Philippines' biggest independent news outlet. Ressa has criticised Facebook in the past and said the social media giant was "biased against facts." In 2016, Ressa contacted Facebook with details concerning the rampant threats targeted via Facebook at people, predominantly women in the Philippines who were critical of the drug war waged by then-president Rodrigo Duterte, according to a report by Vox. A year later, she met Mark Zuckerberg and said that 97 per cent of Filipinos are on Facebook. She invited the Facebook CEO to come to the Philippines to "understand the impact" of this. "Oh well. What are the other 3 per cent doing, Maria?” Zuckerberg replied. In February this year, Ressa urged users to stay on Facebook, "despite all its problems with disinformation." “If good people leave Facebook, what happens to the rest of the people on Facebook? If people who want facts leave social media, what happens to the people who stay on social media? That includes our younger generation…. I’ll give you a quick answer – I don’t believe you should [quit Facebook],” Ressa said during a book signing event on February 16. At least 153 people have died in custody in El Salvador after they were arrested as part of the government's controversial crackdown on gangs. According to a report by the human rights group Cristosal on Monday (May 29), dozens of prisoners were tortured and killed in jail after being caught up in the year-long security crackdown. None of those who died were convicted of a crime they were accused of at the time of their arrest, the news agency Associated Press reported. There were four women among the victims and the rest were men. The report by Cristosal said the deaths were the result of torture, and systematic and serious injuries, adding nearly half of the victims suffered violent deaths. 'A deliberate denial of medical assistance' Cristosal said on Monday that some of the deaths showed signs they resulted from a deliberate denial of medical assistance, medicine and food, including some deaths due to malnutrition. The deaths also revealed punitive policies carried out by guards and prison officials and said such actions would have required authorisation and backing by the highest-level security officials. The human rights group said it had compiled the information through fieldwork, and collecting documents from medical examiners. The investigators interviewed the victims' families and neighbours, and others who were jailed and released. 'Free the innocent': Cristosal to President Nayib Bukele Cristosal called on the administration of El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele to answer about the conditions that these prisoners were held under, respect due process, free those who are innocent, answer for those who died, provide all available information to the families of the victims and end the measures implemented under the special powers. Noah Bullock, the group's director, said the findings pointed out how human rights violations were a systematic practice rather than an exception under the ruling government. The Bukele government has arrested over 68,000 people under the special powers since March last year. And over 5,000 people were freed as they could not convince a judge that they were tied to criminal structures. Pakistan's Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said on Sunday (May 28) that his government would share the details of the upcoming budget with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to unlock stalled funds. Finance Minister Dar said he would like IMF to clear its ninth review before the budget, which would be presented in early June, as all conditions for that were already met. Speaking to Geo TV, Dar said, "They have asked for some more things again, we are ready to give that too, they say that give us budget details, we will give it to them." Dar pointed out that it would not work for Islamabad if the IMF combined the ninth and tenth review of the bailout, adding, "We will not do it, (we) see this is (as) unfair." According to a recent study, five subtypes of heart failure that could potentially pose a risk to individual patients have been identified using artificial intelligence (AI) tools.

According to a recent study, five subtypes of heart failure that could potentially pose a risk to individual patients have been identified using artificial intelligence (AI) tools. The study, published in The Lancet Digital Health journal, said that machine learning has been used to analyse heart failure subtypes, but not across large, distinct, population-based datasets, across the whole spectrum of causes and presentations, or with clinical and non-clinical validation by different machine learning methods. In the study, researchers looked at detailed anonymised patient data from people aged 30 years or older who were diagnosed with heart failure in the United Kingdom (UK) over a span of 20 years. "Pre-heart failure and post-heart failure factors (n=645) included demographic information, history, examination, blood laboratory values, and medications. We identified subtypes using four unsupervised machine learning methods (K-means, hierarchical, K-Medoids, and mixture model clustering) with 87 of 645 factors in each dataset," the study added. The five heart failure subtypes The study identified five incident heart failure subtypes: (1) early onset, (2) late onset, (3) atrial fibrillation-related, (4) metabolic, and (5) cardiometabolic. The researchers evaluated subtypes for external validity (across datasets); prognostic validity (predictive accuracy for 1-year mortality); genetic validity (UK Biobank), association with polygenic risk score (PRS) for heart failure-related traits (n=11), and single nucleotide polymorphisms. Late-onset and cardiometabolic subtypes were the most similar and strongly associated with PRS for hypertension, myocardial infarction, and obesity. And the all-cause mortality risks at one year were: early onset (20 per cent), late-onset (46 per cent), atrial fibrillation related (61 per cent), metabolic (11 per cent), and cardiometabolic (37 per cent). Failure cluster app The researchers also developed an app that could be used by clinicians to identify the cluster which a particular patient falls within, and their predicted survival. The clinicians interviewed felt the app was a feasible use of the identified clusters to identify which cluster a patient belonged to during consultations in routine care and that it could enable testing of effectiveness and cost-effectiveness in appropriately designed, prospective studies. Professor Amitava Banerjee from University College London (UCL), who is the lead author of the study, said, "We sought to improve how we classify heart failure, with the aim of better understanding the likely course of the disease and communicating this to patients. Currently, how the disease progresses is hard to predict for individual patients." Professor Banerjee pointed out that better distinctions between types of heart failure may also lead to more targeted treatments and "may help us to think in a different way about potential therapies."
