A woman on Sunday (Feb 11) opened fire at a megachurch of televangelist Joel Osteen in Houston, Texas. Citing the police, a report by the news agency Reuters on Monday said that two off-duty law enforcement officers took down the woman. The incident happened at the Lakewood Church, and the woman was shot dead by the officers, one of whom was a Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission agent and the other a Houston police officer.

Addressing a press conference, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said the shooter, who was in her 30s, entered the Lakewood Church before 2 pm local time armed with a long rifle and accompanied by a child around 5 years old and began firing.

Two people, including the child who was with the woman, were injured in the shooting

What happened

Finner told reporters, "She (the shooter) entered the building, she was armed with a long rifle and a trenchcoat with a backpack, accompanied by a small child, approximately four to five years old. Once she entered, at some point she began to fire."

Finner thanked the officers for their immediate action, saying, "I want to compliment the off-duty officers, who were working extra here. One TABC (Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission) agent, four years of service, 38 years old. And HPD (Houston Police Department) off-duty officer, 28 years old, two years of service. Both officers, the officer and agent, engaged, striking the female. She is deceased here on the scene."

Talking about the injured, Finner informed, "Unfortunately, a five-year-old kid was hit and is in critical condition at our local hospital. There was a 57-year-old man who didn't have anything to do with it, I don't think, was shot in the leg. He is seeking treatment in the hospital. So let's all pray for each and every one of them."

The attacker also talked of hiding a bomb which wasn't found anywhere upon search.

"Once she went down, officers reported back to us that she threatened that she had a bomb. So we searched her vehicle, our bomb squad, and also the backpack. No explosives were found. But she was also spraying some kind of substance on the ground," he said.

The Houston police chief also said that the shooting was an isolated incident and there was no further danger to the public.

"But we do want to conduct an adequate search of the building to make sure that nobody is in there hurt. So that will continue. We ask that the public stay away from the area and let us do our job," Finner added.

Joel Osteen reacts to shooting

Reacting to the incident, Joel Osteen prayed for the injured people and the deceased shooter. "Of course, we are devastated, we have been here 65 years and to have someone shooting in your church...But, you know we do not understand why these things happen but we know God is in control, and we are going to pray for that little five-year-old boy, and pray for the lady that was deceased, her family and all, and the other gentleman," Osteen said.

Osteen said that they won't let the shocking incident affect their resilience and faith.

"But I just don't know, I'm kind of in a fog, you know, but just believe that we are going to stay strong. We are going to continue to move forward. There are forces of evil, but the forces that are for us, the forces of God are stronger than that," the televangelist added.

There was a 57-year-old man who didn't have anything to do with it, I don't think, was shot in the leg. He is seeking treatment in the hospital. So let's all pray for each and every one of them." The attacker also talked of hiding a bomb which wasn't found anywhere upon search. Joel Osteen reacts to shooting Reacting to the incident, Joel Osteen prayed for the injured people and the deceased shooter. (With inputs from agencies)

A 15-year-old boy accused of shooting a Brazilian tourist in the leg in Times Square on Thursday (Feb 8) and then firing at a police officer while fleeing, was arrested just outside of New York City on Friday, the news agency Associated Press reported, citing the police. The teenager, identified as Jesus Alejandro Rivas-Figureoa, was taken into custody at a residential house that police believe may be linked to a family member in Yonkers nearly 24 hours after the shooting.

The incident began in a sporting goods store and spilled out onto the streets of Midtown Manhattan. Speaking to reporters, New York City Police Commissioner Edward Caban said it was a miracle that no one was seriously injured.

Earlier, the police had identified the suspect as a resident of a migrant shelter in Manhattan. The 15-year-old arrived in New York from Venezuela in 2023. The boy is also considered a suspect in an armed robbery in the Bronx and a separate shooting in Times Square in Jan.

The shooting

On Thursday, Jesus Alejandro, dressed in white, and two other teenagers were shoplifting a jacket from the sporting goods store shortly after 7 pm local time when they were confronted by a security guard who asked to see a receipt. When they couldn't produce one, the guard took back the merchandise. That's when Alejandro pulled out a .45 calibre handgun and fired at her. The bullet missed the worker but grazed a 38-year-old Brazilian tourist in line to buy a pair of sneakers.

The shooter and one of the other teens with him then ran off. The report said that four blocks away on 47th Street — near a triangular Times Square pedestrian plaza, two police officers spotted Alejandro and the second teenager who was detained.

The police said that Alejandro fled toward 6th Avenue with one of the officers giving chase, at one point cutting between buildings. There, he turned and fired at the officer, the police added.

Addressing a press conference, NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said on Thursday, "Our officer draws his weapon. He cannot fire. Too many people around, there’s too many people ducking."

The 15-year-old shooter fired again from under his arm and continued to flee, running into a subway station. He was arrested on Friday.

'Scary moment'

Speaking to NBC, the tourist Tatiele Ribeiro Lemos recalled the “scary moment” when she realized she had been shot. “I started checking myself then looked at my leg and saw blood dripping down, but I was able to stay calm,” Lemos said.

She received 13 stitches for the wound at a local hospital.

The results of all 265 seats in the general elections in Pakistan were released on Sunday (Feb 11). Of the total 265 seats counted, independent candidates won 101 seats, followed by Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (PML-N) which won 75 seats, and Bilwal Bhutto's Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) won 54 seats. The results of the NA 88 constituency have been withheld.

The nation of 241 million people voted on Thursday, but the results were delayed.

A report has suggested that transparency was largely maintained at polling stations in the country but was compromised at the offices of the Returning Officers (ROs).

The report's findings

The report by the Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN), published on Saturday, said the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) established an efficient mechanism for the accreditation of observers, which ensured the timely delivery of accreditation cards to FAFEN observers when they completed their training.

"The importance of election observation was also consistently reinforced in all ECP training materials for election officials as well as the ECP code of conduct for security officials, a topic that was weak in training for earlier general elections," the report said.

"As a result, FAFEN faced fewer restrictions to its observation of voting and counting process at polling stations," it added.

However, FAFEN pointed out that 53 of its observers were stopped from observing the voting process by either the polling staff or security officials at 76 polling stations in Okara, Dadu, Sujawal, Peshawar, Islamabad, Shirani, Multan, Quetta, Lahore, Shangla, Khairpur, Kech and Manshera.

"The Form-45 (Result of the Count) was not affixed at a conspicuous place outside almost one-third (29.4 per cent) of the observed polling stations, a measure that is necessary to ensure electoral transparency at the first critical stage of the result management process," it said.

The report also said that the election day on Thursday remained largely peaceful orderly and organised amid heightened security measures by law enforcement agencies across Pakistan.

An overwhelming majority of people in the United States think that President Joe Biden is too old to serve another term in the White House. According to a poll by ABC News and Ipsos published on Sunday (11), 86 per cent of Americans think Biden, 81, is too old to serve as president, which includes 59 per cent of people who think both he and former president Donald Trump, 77, are too old for the top job. The figure also includes 27 per cent who think that only Biden is too old to become president again.

This poll came just days after a special counsel of the US Department of Justice (DoJ), which is probing Biden's handling of classified documents after he left the vice presidency in 2017, released its findings in a 388-page report.

The report said that Biden willfully retained and disclosed classified materials after his vice presidency, which included documents about military and foreign policy in Afghanistan, issues of national security, and foreign policy implicating sensitive intelligence sources and methods.

Reacting to the special counsel's report, Trump told supporters at a National Rifle Association meeting on Friday in Pennsylvania that he should have been treated the same way as Biden when it came to possession of classified documents. "If Biden is not going to be charged, he said, that's up to them, you know look if he's not going to be charged, that's up to them, but then I should not be charged. This is nothing more than selective persecution of Biden's political opponent, me. And I don't know that it is Biden, because I don't think he knows he is alive," Trump said during the meeting in Harrisburg. (With inputs from agencies)
