Since 1950, around 3,000 paedophiles seem to have operated in Catholic Church in France.

The striking revelation has been made by the head of an independent commission, which is investigating the scandal, to AFP news agency, days ahead of the release of its report.

Due to be released on Tuesday, the report has been made after two-and-a-half years of research, which was based on court, police and church archives, and interviews with witnesses.

Commission's chairman Jean-Marc Sauve, said, the research found between 2,900 and 3,200 paedophile priests or other church members. Sauve added that it was "a minimum estimate".

Sauve, who is also a senior French civil servant, said, the report runs into 2,500 pages. It looks to quantify both the number of offenders and victims.

The report looked into "the mechanisms, notably institutional and cultural ones" within the Church, which allowed paedophiles to function. It will also offer 45 proposals.

In 2018, the independent commission was set up by the Bishops' Conference of France (CEF). It was formed after a number of scandals shook the Church in France and worldwide.

The commission constitutes 22 legal professionals, doctors, historians, sociologists and theologians. Its objective was to investigate allegations of child sex abuse by clerics since 1950s.

According to new research, the 2019–20 bushfires had a devastating impact on 11 species of native Australian bees.

The scientists in Australia have analysed the effect of the fires on 553 native bee species. Almost one-third of all species of bees discovered in the country to date.

In the analysis, 11 species are found to be eligible to get listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) red list of threatened species.

Before the fires, only three Australian species of bees were threatened.

Two bee species, Leioproctus nigrofulvus or the solitary bee and Leioproctus carinatifrons, now fit the IUCN’s criteria for an endangered listing. During the bushfires, large areas of their native habitat were burnt. Nine bee species were assessed to be “vulnerable”.

Using publicly available data, the researchers modelled the bees’ extinction risk from the wildfires.

An adjunct lecturer at the University of Adelaide, study co-author Stefan Caddy-Retalic, said it was surprising that a single fire event pushed 11 species of bees much closer to extinction.

Although there are 1,654 known bee species in Australia, the scientists believe the real figure may be more.

“There are so many native bees that are still left to discover – a lot of these species are at risk of being lost before they’re even found, which is an incredible indictment on the impact that we’re having on Australia’s biodiversity,” Caddy-Retalic said.

As the company completed 29 years, MD and CEO of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) Punit Goenka on Saturday (October 2) said the company is looking forward to many more successful years ahead. Goenka went on to share about the company's remarkable journey and said it would not have been possible without the company employees' persistence and hard work.

"I am delighted to share that on this day, 29 years ago, we set pen to paper and laid the foundation of an extraordinary institution and an Academy of Talent, which we called ZEE. Back then, a lot of people thought it was a bold and impossible idea, but the power of passion and perseverance paid off and here we are today, celebrating 29 glorious years of ZEE!" Goenka said. He added, "These 29 years have been remarkable to say the least! A journey wherein we embedded a culture of consistent value creation and sustained growth. This would not have been possible without your persistence and hard work."

On dealing with challenges

A strong believer of hard work, Goenka's mantra in challenging situations is to look at the silver lining instead of the dark cloud. Admitting that this journey had its fair share of challenges, Goenka said, "My mantra in these situations has always been to look at the silver lining instead of the dark cloud; or to put it simply, to consistently focus on one’s work and believe that every difficult phase shall certainly pass. In fact, these ups and downs have been extremely consequential in building our resilience, enabling us to remain committed towards the Company’s growth and profitability."

"Today, the words ‘Entertainment’ and ‘ZEE’ are spoken in consonance, which speak immensely of our success and this precious asset we have created together. This dream that we have built & nurtured over almost three decades, has transformed into a global conglomerate, with our synergised efforts and actions. Let us all today, celebrate our accomplishments by reinforcing the power of optimism and togetherness. After all, it is this ethos that has enabled us to stay rooted in our rich value system and yet be global in our aspirations," Goenka said.

The proposed merger with Sony

Addressing his employees, Goenka said, "I cherish the strong bond we have formed over the years, which has always enabled me to be as candid as I can, in sharing my thoughts with all of you. The best is yet to come! The proposed merger with Sony Pictures Networks India will make us the largest Media & Entertainment company in the country. I am extremely confident that with Sony as partners in our value creation journey, the combined synergies will help us strengthen our capabilities to create sharper content, that enriches the lives of our consumers."

He added, "I am always with you in this journey, and we will continue to walk this path together to script newer successes. I am humbled by your unwavering support to the Company, and I doff my hat to the leadership team at ZEE, for instilling a healthy and collaborative culture that enables you to push the boundaries consistently."

Transforming obstacles into possibilities and successful outcomes

Goenka reminded people that "we all gain a series of great opportunities that are often disguised as impossible situations." He said, "The key is to transform our obstacles into possibilities and eventually successful outcomes. I firmly believe the time to change is now, as we together step into the 30th year of the Company that awaits to be filled with success, glory, growth, and profitability."

As a parting shot, he added, "Always remember, that being challenged in life is inevitable but being defeated is optional. The choice will always be yours alone! My heartiest congratulations to each and every one of you on achieving this glorious milestone! To this and many more!"

The United States will have to recognise the Taliban government in Afghanistan "sooner or later", said Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan.

In an interview with TRT World, the Pakistan PM said, "They [US] are trying to find scapegoats and one of them is Pakistan." He emphasised that this was not a rational mindset for a way forward.

The prime minister has slammed US claims of Pakistan being responsible for the Afghan fallout. "Whenever this anger goes and some rationality appears in the US, they will realise how could Pakistan be responsible for this," he added.

If you analyse, the PM said, the conclusion will be anything except [blame for] Pakistan.

The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearings clearly implied that Americans were "completely surprised" by the Taliban coming back to power, the PM added.

Over the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, the leader says the US President Joe Biden is being "unfairly targeted". Khan questioned how it could be anyone's fault when the Afghan army collapsed itself.

“The American public had no idea what was going on in Afghanistan. Gen Kayani in 2010 told President Obama that there was no military solution in Afghanistan,” added Khan.

The Pakistani leader insisted that if the US kept Afghan reserves frozen and the government collapsed in its aftermath, “the biggest loser will be the people of the country.”

Seeking a reconciliation, the leader also said the Pakistani government is in talks with some groups of the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

"There are different groups, which form the TTP and some of them want to talk to our government for peace. So, we are in talks with them. It’s a reconciliation process," PM added.

The leader was responding a question that whether any Covid vaccine should be recognised and considered or only the ones validated by the World Health Organisation or any other group.

At his first press conference on Friday, Shahid said, "On vaccines, that's a very technical question you have asked me. I got Covishield from India, I’ve got the two doses. I don't know how many countries would say that Covishield is acceptable or not, but a large portion of the countries have got Covishield.”

Developed by British-Swedish pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, the Covishield vaccine has been manufactured in India by Pune-based Serum Institute of India.

“And I’ve survived. But let someone else, a medical person make that call, not me,” Shahid added.

Through grants, commercial shipments and the COVAX facility, India has exported over 66 million vaccine doses to nearly 100 countries. The home country of Shahid, Maldives was among the first nations to receive the India-made vaccines in January.
