In a striking revelation made by a congressional memo, almost none of the 82,000 people, who were airlifted from Afghanistan, were vetted before being admitted to the United States.

The memo summarised interviews with federal officials, who oversaw the evacuation of people at domestic and international military bases from war-torn country in August after the takeover by Taliban.

This comes despite the contrary claims of the Biden administration.

In the memo drafted by Senate Republicans in October, senior officials from the departments of state, homeland security, defence and justice described it a disastrous screening and vetting process.

According to the memo, the Biden administration failed to vet the information that tens of thousands of Afghans provided through in-person interviews and just relied on criminal and terrorist databases to flag bad actors.

The tens of thousands of Afghans brought into the US by the administration were not qualified, it said.

Around 75% evacuated were not US citizens, Afghan Special Immigrant Visa holders, green card holders, or applicants for the visa, a report by the Washington Examiner cited three sources familiar with the interviews done in the memo.

In what can be called a major error, China seems to have undercounted the number of children born from 2000 to 2010 by at least 11.6 million.

The error seems to have happened partly due to its stringent one-child policy.

In the latest statistical yearbook released by the government, the number of children born during the period is 172.5 million. It is well above the 160.9 million recorded in the age group in the 2010 census.

The difference may have been due to a possibility that some parents had failed to register births to avoid punishment if they breached the one-child policy.

In 2016, China had started allowing couples to have a second child.

Around 57% kids registered were girls. The discrepancy may have happened partly as the parents could have been avoiding reporting girls so they are able to try for a boy.

Conducted on November 1, 2010, the census would have also missed births in the last two months of the year. The surveys of the census also don’t include people, who have died or emigrated.

Schahaff said that she wanted to cross the final frontier with her 17-year-old daughter, who is a science student living in Britain. Her daughter dreams of working with NASA one day.

In early November, Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson had surprised 44-year-old Schahaff with the news at her home in the Caribbean.

"I just thought I was doing a zoom interview. When I saw Richard Branson walking in, I just started screaming! I couldn't believe it. I was always interested in space as a little girl. This is a great opportunity for me to feel alive and to just make the greatest adventure ever," Schahaff told AFP.

The health coach had won the prize after entering a fundraiser sweepstakes, which was organised by Virgin Galactic on the Omaze platform. It had raised $1.7 million.

The money is going to be donated to a non-government group ‘Space for Humanity’. It works for wider access to space.

Initial unemployment claims tumbled last week to their lowest point since 1969, the Labor Department reported Wednesday.

New filings for state benefits totaled 199,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis, a decline of 71,000 from the previous week.

The drop marks a milestone in the economy’s recovery from the pandemic. Weekly claims peaked at more than 6 million in April 2020, reflecting the impact of the coronavirus on businesses and consumers alike. As recently as early January, amid a winter resurgence of the coronavirus, new state claims exceeded 900,000 in one week.

Filing for unemployment benefits has come down sharply since then but remained well above pre-pandemic levels until very recently.

Unemployment insurance was a key source of relief after the pandemic threw more than 20 million people out of work. To buttress state payments, emergency benefits were funded through federal pandemic relief bills, although those payments ceased in September, cutting off aid to 7.5 million people.

Despite a summer lull, the economy has been showing signs of life lately. Employers added 531,000 jobs in October, and most economists expect growth to pick up in the final quarter of the year, boosted by healthy consumer spending.

“Today’s data reinforce the historic economic progress we are making and the importance of building on that progress in the weeks ahead,” President Joe Biden said in a statement about the unemployment claims report.

As one measure of progress, Biden pointed to the most recent tally of unemployment benefits of all sorts, from early November, which showed the number of people with continuing claims — those filing for benefits who have already filed an initial claim — at 2.4 million. The figure right before Thanksgiving last year was more than 20 million.

The biggest economic worry lately hasn’t been joblessness but inflation, which has been surging amid labor shortages, supply chain disruptions and higher energy prices.

In a separate report Wednesday, the Commerce Department said that household spending rose 1.3% in October, while personal income jumped 0.5%, before adjusting for inflation. It also showed that prices climbed by 5% in the 12 months through October.

The data for unemployment claims, although certainly welcome news, may not be quite as good as it seems. On an unadjusted basis, state claims rose last week. And employment remains 4.2 million jobs below its level in February 2020, before the pandemic.

“While the labor market is recovering, we think the latest drop in claims may be overstated,” said Gregory Daco, chief U.S. economist at Oxford Economics. “We suspect the decline last week may have been exaggerated by quirky seasonal adjustment factors and think we might see a bounce-back in the weeks ahead.”
