Meta executives have revealed that their AI virtual assistant, dubbed Meta AI, was trained on public posts made by its users on Facebook and Instagram.

Meta President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg, however, clarified that they didn’t scrape through the private Facebook messenger and Instagram chats that are shared only with family and friends so as to respect consumers’ privacy.

"We've tried to exclude datasets that have a heavy preponderance of personal information," Clegg told Reuters news agency on Thursday (Sept 28), adding that the "vast majority" of the data used by Meta for training was publicly available.

The clarification seeks to assuage the privacy concerns over tech companies like Meta, OpenAI, and Alphabet, the parent company of Google, using information scraped from the internet without permission to train their AI models.

<h2>Built on powerful Lama2 language model</h2>

Meta AI, which was unveiled by CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday at Meta's annual products conference, Connect, is built on a custom model based on the powerful Llama 2 large language model, and a new model called Emu that generates images in response to text prompts.

The product will be able to generate text, audio and imagery and will have access to real-time information via a partnership with Microsoft's Bing search engine, Clegg said.

“The public Facebook and Instagram posts that were used to train Meta AI included both text and photos,” he added.

Clegg assured that Meta imposed safety restrictions on what content its virtual assistant AI tool could generate, like a ban on the creation of photo-realistic images of public figures.

Speaking on copyrighted materials, Clegg said he was expecting a "fair amount of litigation" over the matter of "whether creative content is covered or not by existing fair use doctrine," which permits the limited use of protected works for purposes such as commentary, research and parody.

"We think it is, but I strongly suspect that's going to play out in litigation," Clegg said.

<h2>AI still in beta version</h2>

Meta, which is currently in beta version, is an “advanced conversational assistant” that can generate text, audio, and imagery, and have real-time access to information through a partnership with Microsoft's Bing search engine.

The company states that the AI chatbot will be limited to information that largely existed prior to 2023,

Meta will eventually launch an AI creator studio for businesses and developers to build their own personalized AI chatbot.

Currently, Meta’s new AI tool is only available in the US.

The meeting comes amid rumours that Kadyrov has been suffering from serious health problems.

Former editor-in-chief of Echo of Moscow Alexey Venediktov had earlier claimed that the Chechen leader was in the hospital with "severe kidney failure" which requires "frequent hemodialysis".

But earlier this month, Kadyrov posted a video online saying that he was fine and that his reason for travelling to a Moscow hospital was to visit the bed-ridden sick uncle.

Director of Moga Medicity Hospital Ajmer Singh Kalra said the patient had been suffering from stomach pain for two years. He was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of fever and vomiting.&nbsp;

"On carrying out an X-ray, we found lockets, chain, nuts, bolts, earphones and many other objects inside the stomach. We then decided to operate on him,” he told local media.

<h2>Patient was diagnosed with pica disorder</h2>

According to the doctors, the patient suffered from pica disorder.

“Pica is an eating disorder in which a person eats things not usually considered food. Since he had eaten sharp objects, there are severe wounds in his stomach. Even thought the surgery was carried out successfully, he is still on ventilator and is critical,” Ajmer Singh said.

Singh's family members were also surprised by the findings and they had no idea how he managed to ingest the items. They said he&nbsp;complained&nbsp;of stomach ache and was unable to sleep. The family also added that he was mentally disturbed.

Members of organised criminal groups get hired as prison guards with the “sole purpose” of smuggling contraband into the prisons in UK, the Prison Officers’ Association (POA) has warned.

The POA, the union representing prison workers, has said that online interviews were the prime contributor of “hiring the wrong people”.

“Organised crime groups realise that there’s a lot of money to be made by smuggling contraband into prisons. People can be recruited as a prison officer and go into [the jail] with that sole purpose of bringing contraband in, to make a lot of money. They can do it by themselves or for an organised crime group,” a POA spokesperson said, according to the Guardian.

“You get paid to train and you do whatever you want after that. If you have a good run, you don’t get caught and get out after five or six months having made good bucks. It sounds a bit surreal. But that’s actually happening.”

The union said that a vast majority of prisons are facing this problem, and added that fail-safety measures are needed to curb this practice.

“In the vast majority of prisons, a lot of young staff could be conditioned into bringing stuff in, and other staff come to us with the sole intended purpose of taking stuff in.”

<h2>Low and inexperience major risk factors</h2>

Apart from that, inexperience and low pay are also contributing to young prison guards being lured by the gangsters.

And of course, once you’ve been pulled in, it’s very hard to stop,” Charlie Taylor, the chief inspector of prisons, told the Guardian.

The police officer recalled a case where 18 female guards were fired&nbsp;and three were jailed for having relationships with prisoners at HMP Berwyn in north Wales.

According to some critics, the proposed measures are superficial and only address the symptoms of violence rather than its underlying causes.

The recent surge in gang wars has been attributed to a conflict&nbsp;involving the Foxtrot network gang, which split into two rival factions after infighting.

The PM said Sweden had not seen anything like it before and that "no other country in Europe" was experiencing this kind of situation. He stressed that children and innocent bystanders were increasingly being caught up in violence across the country.

The research conducted by scientists&nbsp;from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Rutgers University has pinpointed various locations in the city which are sinking at varying rates than the whole city.

The scientists said the sinking rate in these locations is faster than the average 1.6 millimetres per year experienced by the rest of NYC.

Among the areas which have been observed to be sinking faster are LaGuardia Airport, Arthur Ashe Stadium and Coney Island.

<h2>A city sitting atop ancient glacier that is now retreating </h2>

The researchers found that from 2016 to 2023, LaGuardia’s runways and Arthur Ashe Stadium was sinking at 3.7 and 4.6 millimetres per year, respectively.

While the whole city is sinking under the weight of skyscrapers, the newly identified hotspots are dipping because they sit atop an ancient glacier that is retreating.

And this is happening because of dual factors—natural and human, the study noted.

The ancient glacier covered most of New England about 24,000 years ago, and a wall of ice more than a mile high covered what is today Albany in upstate New York.

<h2>Some areas are getting uplifted </h2>

Interestingly, the team also found areas which are moving up.

East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and Woodside, Queens areas were found to be rising by about 1.6 mm and 6.9 mm per year respectively.

The study’s co-author Robert Kopp of Rutgers University believe that groundwater pumping and injection wells used to treat polluted water may have played a role in the uplift of these areas, but added that further investigation is needed.

Some areas in New York sinking faster than whole city, says NASA

The row over the sharing of Cauvery river water between southern Indian states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu has spilled into the streets of Karnataka’s Bengaluru city where local organisations called for a total shutdown on Friday (Sep 29).

The shutdown took effect at 6 am local time and will be observed till 6 in the evening.

Many grocery shops and other non-essential stores have been closed in support of the agitation, while essential services like hospitals, ambulances, and pharmacies were operational.

A top Chinese scientist has claimed that India’s Chandrayaan-3, the country’s lunar mission, didn’t land on the Moon’s south pole, disputing New Delhi’s historic achievement.

The startling claim comes at a time when Indian scientists are trying to revive the Vikram lander and Pragyaan rover from hibernation after the two-week frosty lunar night.

The comments were made on Wednesday by Chinese cosmochemist Ouyang Ziyuan —who was the chief scientist of China’s first lunar mission.

He also claimed that the spacecraft didn’t land either at or near the lunar south pole.

“The landing site of the Chandrayaan-3 was not at the Moon’s south pole, not in the polar region of the Moon’s south pole, nor was it ‘near the Antarctic polar region’,” Ouyang, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told its official Science Times newspaper.

His argument stems from the differing perceptions of what he considers to be the south pole region of the Moon.

On Earth, the southern pole is defined anywhere between 66.5 and 90 degrees south, since its rotational axis is tilted at around 23.5 degrees relative to the Sun.

NASA considers Moon’s South Pole to be 80 to 90 degrees, while Ouyang said he considered it to be even smaller at a mere 88.5 to 90 degrees, reflecting the Moon’s 1.5-degree tilt.

No one has ever questioned or disputed India’s successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the moon's southern pole. In fact, NASA and the European Space Agency have lauded the ISRO scientists for a soft landing near the far side of the Moon. Even India has been clear since day one that the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft will be landing&nbsp;around 70 degrees latitude, which is near the south pole.

A scientist from Hong Kong University’s Laboratory for Space Research has brushed aside Ouyang’s unfound claims.

Rashmi Samant, the first Indian who was elected as the President of the Oxford Student Union (SU), has alleged in her new book titled ‘A Hindu in Oxford’ that the institute was racist towards Indians and was Hinduphobic.

Sawant was elected as the first female Indian Oxford University Student Union (OUSU) President in February 2021.

The book details the events following her election and subsequent resignation over the allegations of anti-semitic, racist and transphobic comments.

Speaking to ANI news agency, Sawant claimed that Indians face a “lot of discrimination and hatred” and they aren’t given a platform to express their grievances in public domain.

She further said that the professors specifically targeted her at the university, claiming that they questioned her holding the office of president citing her religious and ethnic backgrounds.

<h2>'Oxford is Hinduphobic'</h2>

She said that when she stepped down from her post in February of 2021, the matter would have reached the stage of “conviction” “if they had not found somebody who looked an Indian to take over (from her)”.

After Sawant stepped down, Anvee Bhutani, an Indian Hindu, was subsequently elected as the President of the Oxford University Students Union.

Responding to Avnee’s claims that she didn’t face any discrimination, Sawant said, “Avnee is doing a disservice to the movement (on campus) by playing down the trauma that somebody else has lived through.”

“She has no proof to back her claim.&nbsp;It was an act to defame me and to play down the seriousness of racism abroad for ulterior motives. During the British era also we saw a lot of people from Bharatiya origin who used to defend the British as it was something positive for the Indian people. All they are doing is lying and lapping up to the expectations of the British,” she said.

<h2>Samant stepped down in 2021</h2>

Just months into being elected, Samant had to resign after her old social media posts surfaced online that allegedly were racist and anti-semitic in nature.

According to reports, Samant was accused of racism after she captioned a photo of herself in Malaysia with the words 'Ching Chang' and also posted an insensitive caption on a photo of the Holocaust memorial in Berlin.

While Samant claimed that she was removed due to “racially-motivated reason”, the university clarified that the decision had nothing to do with Samant’s religion or race.

'We are treated badly': First Indian to head students’ body makes explosive claims about Oxford University

Around 90 per cent of beggars arrested in foreign countries are from Pakistan, Pakistan’s Ministry of Overseas informed a parliamentary panel.

Briefing the Senate Committee on Overseas Pakistanis on Wednesday (Sept 27), the ministry’s secretary Zulfikar Haider said that a significant number of beggars travel abroad through human trafficking channels.

The information was shared while discussing the issue of skilled and unskilled labourers leaving the country. Haider said that many beggars exploited pilgrim visas to travel to Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Iraq.

“The Iraqi and Saudi ambassadors have reported that their jails were overcrowded due to these arrests,” he said.

In Saudi prisons as well, there are significant Pakistani prisoners who were caught in cases like pickpocketing, Haider said, adding that they were apprehended in holy sites like Haram.

<h2>Pak laments the inability to send skilled workers to foreign nations</h2>

Haider also noted that Japan had emerged as a new destination for Pakistani beggars, the Dawn newspaper reported.

During the meeting, Senator Rana Mehmoodul Hasan lamented the country’s inability to send its skilled workers to countries like Japan where the demand for labourers from India is high.

Hasan also mentioned that as many as 50,000 engineers in Pakistan were unemployed, and urged the ministry to devise a strategy with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other related ministries to aid in sending Pakistani engineers as skilled workers to Japan, China and other countries.

<h2>High demand for workers from India, Bangladesh&nbsp;</h2>

“India chand par pahonch gaya hai, aur hum rozana koi chaand charha dete hain&nbsp;(India has reached the moon, while we stumble every day),” the senator said, according to the newspaper.

“Our people are now ready to work on wages lower than those of workers of Nepal and India.”

Haider also highlighted that foreign employers have had concerns about the skills and trustworthiness of Pakistani workers, which is not the case with Bangladesh and India.
