Nearly half of Britain's bird species, and almost a third of amphibians, reptiles and fungi are at the risk of becoming extinct,&nbsp;wildlife scientists have warned.

The annual State of Nature report, published on Wednesday (Sep 27), states that 43 per cent of bird species might vanish, while other creatures such as the hazel dormouse, the lady’s slipper orchid, and the European eel face an uncertain future.

The study has blamed humans for causing habitat loss, accelerating diseases such as avian flu via factory farming, and burning of fossil fuels, which has altered climate.

Climate change and intensive farming have wiped out the natural habitat of flowering plant species, with UK seeing an average decline of all living species of 19 per cent since monitoring began in 1970, the report states.

The report also paints a sombre picture for organic farmers. According to scientists, insect species that provide pest control, such as the two-spot ladybird, have declined by 34 per cent, showing a sharper decline than insect species in general.

<h2>Humans blamed&nbsp;</h2>

The report also found that only a fifth of farmland is in a nature-friendly farming scheme and just 44 per cent of woodland is certified as sustainably managed, the Guardian reported citing the study.

“The sobering message is that the state of UK nature and the wider environment, based upon the indices that we’ve got, continues to decline and degrade,” Richard Gregory, the RSPB’s head of monitoring conservation science, said.

The study was led by Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), a London-based charitable organisation that works extensively on wildlife conservation.

The report relied on thousands of volunteers recording sightings of various species across the UK, its crown dependencies and overseas territories.

They assessed more than 10,000 species as well as the state of the habitats vital for their survival.

He vocally expressed his views when Fox host Dana Perino asked the presidential hopefuls whether they would pass a federal law requiring parents to be notified about their child changing gender identities.

The Indian-origin Republican leader asserted that parents have the “right to know” about their kids’ prospective transitions, and that “it is not compassionate to affirm a kid's confusion.”

He said that as president, he would pass a federal law permanently outlawing procedures he called “genital mutilation”.

“I have to be very clear about this. Transgenderism, especially in kids, is a mental health disorder. We have to acknowledge the truth of that for what it is…parents have the right to know…the very people who say that this increases the risk of suicide are also the ones saying parents don’t have the right to know about the increased risk of suicide. And I am sorry, it is not compassionate to affirm a kid’s confusion. That is not compassion, that is cruelty.”

<h2>'Kids with gender dysphoria considering&nbsp;suicide'</h2>

He further claimed, without providing any evidence, that 50 per cent of kids with gender dysphoria have considered suicide.

“Yet politicians reject a law that would require schools to inform parents if their kids change their gender identity at school. Parents have a right to know about their kids: that shouldn’t be controversial. Ban genital mutilation &amp; puberty blockers before age 18. Treat gender dysphoria as a mental health disorder. Time to empower parents again."

Seven GOP contenders competed at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California on Wednesday night, except Donald Trump who decided to skip the debate and will most likely not attend the third one as well.

‘Transgenderism a mental health disorder’, says Vivek Ramaswamy in GOP debate

At least 50 people were arrested after a frenzy-filled night in Philadelphia which saw scores of shops being looted and vandalised.

The mob-style ransacking of stores began on Tuesday night after a protest against a judge’s decision to overturn murder and other charges against a Philadelphia police officer who shot and killed a driver.

At least a dozen stores including Foot Locker, Lululemon and Apple were vandalised, with people seen decamping with merchandise.

Several clips of the incident went viral on social media purportedly showing masked people in hoodies running out of Lululemon with merchandise and police officers grabbing several of them and tackling them to the sidewalk.

<h2>Robbery linked to protests?</h2>

Jane Roh, spokesperson for the Philadelphia district attorney's office, on Wednesday said that at least 30 people have been booked for burglary, theft and other counts, while 52 have been arrested.

“Those doing the ransacking were not affiliated with the protest,” Interim Police Commissioner John Stanford said at a news conference, calling the group "a bunch of criminal opportunists."

"What we had tonight was a bunch of criminal opportunists taking advantage of a situation and make an attempt to destroy our city," the commissioner said.

<h2>Liquor shops ransacked&nbsp;</h2>

Later, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board chose to close all 48 of its Philadelphia retail locations and one in suburban Cheltenham on Wednesday after at least 18 state-run liquor stores were broken into.

No employees were hurt Tuesday night, but "some were understandably shaken," said liquor board spokesperson Shawn Kelly.

The stores were "closed in the interest of employee safety and while we assess the damage and loss that occurred. We will reopen stores when it is safe to do so and when the damage is repaired," Kelly said.

The theft wasn’t limited to branded stores and liquor shops, as many people in north-eastern Philadelphia also reported their cars being stolen.

Police said seven cars were stolen from a lot in the northeast, of which one had been recovered as of Wednesday afternoon.

The unruly scenes in Philadelphia reminded many of the brazen smash-and-grab thefts elsewhere, particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area, where organised groups of thieves, some carrying crowbars and hammers, have systematically targeted high-end stores.

A video of the incident that went viral on Tuesday (Sept 27) purportedly showed the black bear munching on their enchiladas, salsa, tacos and French fries, while a woman and her child sat silently, seemingly terrified of the animal’s presence.

The clip further goes on to show the woman shielding her kid’s face as they both sit perfectly still, while another person (unsuccessfully) tries to attract the bear's attention.

After finishing its meal, the animal sets off, apparently unaware of the fear it has caused.

According to AP news agency, the woman in the video is Silvia Macía who travelled to the park to celebrate her son Santiago’s 15th birthday, who has Down syndrome.

“Santiago is very afraid of animals, a cat or a dog, any animal scares him a lot,” she was quoted as saying.

The Chipinque Ecological Park in Nuevo León state is known to be a natural habitat for black bears.

The video was posted on the TikTok app, amassing over 10 million views.

The park’s website has said that the presence of black bears has increased in the Monterrey metropolitan area and have been seen prowling in parks, neighbourhoods and streets, increasing the risk of animal-human confrontation.

The park has also provided a list of recommendations online about what to do if a person encounters one of the animals. One of them is that visitors should "never try to photograph a bear up close".

Staff shortage caused by a Covid outbreak has forced London’s second-busiest Gatwick Airport to cancel scores of flights and limit operations till Sunday.

Around 30 per cent of the staff of air traffic control is not working as they are down with Covid infection.

In a statement late Monday, the airport said a daily 800-flight limit, including both arrivals and departures, has been imposed until Sunday.

It said the daily cap will prevent last-minute cancellations and delays for passengers while National Air Traffic Services (NATS) gets back to normal.

The airport’s chief executive, Stewart Wingate, said the decision “means we can prevent as much disruptions as possible.”

<h2>Passengers affected&nbsp;</h2>

“The reason that we are doing this is to provide as much certainty as we can, not only to the airlines but most importantly to the passengers who will travel this week, that the flights that remain scheduled will actually operate," Wingate said.

Around 33 departure flights stand cancelled—the largest ever—for Friday (Sept 29), it added.

NATS issued an apology to passengers saying that the decision was taken due to a variety of medical reasons and that it can't manage the normal flows in and out of the airport.

Among the affected airlines include Easyjet, BA and Ryanair

<h2>Airline operators seek improvement&nbsp;</h2>

Johan Lundgren, chief executive officer of EasyJet said that it is "regrettable that a temporary limit on capacity at Gatwick Airport is required".

It is “the right action by the airport so on-the-day cancellations and delays can be avoided”, he said, adding that Gatwick Airport needs to work on a longer-term plan to improve the resilience of the air traffic service.

It comes weeks after NATS witnessed a massive data glitch, triggering widespread disruption of airlines and leaving thousands of passengers stranded.

The British aviation regulator is yet to launch a probe to determine why the country's air traffic control system suddenly collapsed.

Scientists have finally found a continent that was once part of the ancient Gondwana land.

The continent called Zealandia—Te Riu-a-Māui in the Māori language—is believed to be approximately 94 per cent under the sea, while the remaining 6 per cent makes up New Zealand and surrounding islands.

It was first said to be discovered by Dutch businessman and sailor Abel Tasman in 1642, who was desperate to uncover the "Great Southern Continent".

However, he was unable to find the approximate location. It wasn’t until 2017 that geologists discovered that the continent had been hiding in plain sight all along.

Now on Tuesday, an international team of geologists and seismologists published a refined map of Zealandia in the journal ‘Tectonics’.

They were able to presume its form and structure by using the data obtained from dredged rock samples recovered from the ocean floor.

They came to the conclusion by studying the geologic patterns in West Antarctica which then led them to understand the possibility of a subduction zone near the Campbell Plateau off the west coast of New Zealand.

The researchers refined the existing maps of Zealandia by studying collections of rocks and sediment samples brought up from the ocean bed. While most of these samples came from drilling sites, others came from the shores of islands in the area.

The geologists at New Zealand Crown Research Institute GNS Science admitted that though most of the newfound continent is underwater, it took time for something "very obvious" to be uncovered.

"[It's] a process which we don't completely understand yet, Zealandia started to be pulled away," Tulloch explained, indy100.com reported.

They further said that they are trying to figure out when did Zealandia started to “pull away” from the supercontinent Gondwana, which included most of Western Antarctica and Eastern Australia, over 500 million years ago.

Earlier, India’s foreign minister Jaishankar said that New Delhi is waiting for Canada to share the proof they have against India.

"If you (Canada) have something specific and if you have something relevant, let us know. We are open to looking at it...The picture is not complete without the context in a way,” Jaishankar said at the Council for Foreign Relations in New York on Tuesday.

Even Canadian Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre has said that Trudeau is yet to provide proof of India’s alleged involvement and asked him to come clean on the issue.

"The prime minister needs to come clean with all the facts. We need to know all the evidence possible so that Canadians can make judgments on that...The prime minister hasn’t provided any facts. Setting the ball rolling for ‘One Nation, One Election’, the Indian Law Commission panel has reportedly given its nod to simultaneous elections in the country.

According to the Indian Express newspaper, the panel will frame tentative timelines for the simultaneous elections of parliament, state legislatures, and local bodies—municipalities and panchayat—for the 2024 and 2029 cycles.

The report by the 22nd Law Commission panel will be submitted to the Law Ministry.

The development comes days after a panel was formed under the chairmanship of former president Ramnath Kovind to “examine and make recommendations for holding simultaneous elections”.

The panel’s first meeting was held on September 23 which saw the attendance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, former&nbsp;Rajya Sabha&nbsp;Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Chairman of the Fifteenth Finance Commission N K Singh, former secretary-general of Lok Sabha Subhash C Kashyap and former Chief Vigilance Commissioner Sanjay Kothari.

<h2>Modi's clarion call</h2>

The concept of ‘One Nation, One Election’ gained impetus after Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a clarion call for synchronised elections.

While the BJP argues that the simultaneous elections would significantly reduce the cost incurred by the Election Commission, the opposition believes that the move would give an undue advantage to the ruling dispensation and significantly disrupt the Indian electoral process.

<h2>Five states are about to go to polls in November</h2>

However, the commission did not proceed further with the proposal given “the complexity of the issues involved,” adding that it was “desirable to have further discussions and examination on the matter, involving all the stakeholders, once again, before making final recommendations to the Government.”

Five states are headed for assembly polls in November or December, followed by the Lok Sabha elections&nbsp;which are likely to be held in May-June 2024.

However, the recent moves by the government have thrown open the possibility of moving forward&nbsp;some state polls, which are scheduled for later this year, to coincide with the&nbsp;Lok Sabha contest.

'One Nation, One Election' in 2024? Law panel hints at major electoral change

The Canadian police have denied a Washington Post report that they arrived late at the scene of the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey.

The US-based newspaper in its report on Sept 25 stated that the “police were slow to the scene, and disagreement between agencies caused further delay”.

“There was an hours-long tussle between Surrey police and the RCMP. They couldn’t decide who would head the investigation, so there was a delay,” The Washington Post quoted a gurdwara volunteer, identified as Bhupinderjit Singh, as saying.

The Post further claimed, citing one of those present on the scene, that the RCMP and members of the Surrey Police Service had an “hours-long tussle” over who would take the lead in the investigation.

Responding to the report, the Surrey RCMP spokesperson Corporal Vanessa Munn flatly denied the claims.

“It was suggested that there was a conflict regarding which police agency would ‘head the investigation,'” said Munn.

<h2>'No delay in response'&nbsp;</h2>

“However, as the police of jurisdiction, Surrey RCMP is responsible for all police investigations in Surrey. There is nothing to indicate this investigation was delayed in any way, either in the initial response or in subsequent investigative steps.”

The officer further said that the case&nbsp;was ultimately handed over to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), “with the continued support of Surrey RCMP.”

“IHIT takes lead on all homicide investigations in the Lower Mainland with the exception of Delta and Vancouver. We are confident all necessary investigational steps are being taken to hold those responsible for the homicide accountable,” the Surrey RCMP said.

<h2>Nijjar's killing well-organised&nbsp;</h2>

The Washington Post report carried further details as to how Nijjar’s killing was well-organised.

Citing a number of Khalistani separatists, including Moninder Singh, one of the founders of the Sikh Liberation Front (SLF), the report claimed that Nijjar's car was bugged with a tracker and that he was purportedly a target.

It also quotes the&nbsp;Sikh community members as telling&nbsp;the investigators that the assailants fired about 50 bullets on Nijjar, of which 34 hit the Khalistani terrorist.&nbsp;

Nijjar’s killing was captured by a security camera at Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Canada's Surrey.

A 90-second recording of the video begins with Nijjar’s grey pickup truck pulling out of a parking space, Washington Post reported.

A white sedan appears in an adjacent lot, pulls up and drives parallel to the truck, the report adds.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar entered Canada in the late 1990s on a fake passport and produced false asylum claims based on fake marriages. He became a Canadian citizen in May 2007. In November 2014, an Interpol Red Corner Notice cited over a dozen criminal cases of murder and other terrorist activities against Nijjar in India.&nbsp;

Weighing in on the row with Canada over the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar pointed out the issue of organised crime in Canada that has been on the rise over the years, particularly linked to secessionist forces, violence, and extremism.

Speaking at the Council for Foreign Relations in New York on Tuesday, Jaishankar expressed concerns about Prime Minister Justin Trudeau-led government’s apparent willingness to tolerate such activities for political reasons.

India has been blaming the Canadian government for its soft-handed approach towards pro-Khalistan elements and passing off anti-India activities on its soil as an act of freedom of expression.

The whole situation particularly worsened after reports emerged that one of the members of the Five Eyes shared intelligence inputs with Canada over the alleged role of Indian government agents in the killing of Nijjar.

During the event on Tuesday, when asked about the Five Eyes' involvement, the Indian minister said, “I'm not part of The Five Eyes, I'm certainly not part of the FBI. So I think you're asking the wrong person."&nbsp;

The Five Eyes is an intelligence alliance comprising Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the US, and the UK.

The foreign minister further said that India is open to looking at the proof Canada has against them.

"If you (Canada) have something specific and if you have something relevant, let us know. We are open to looking at it...The picture is not complete without the context in a way.”

Despite Trudeau claiming that they have “credible information” over Indian government agents’ involvement in the killing of Nijjar, it has not provided any proof so far.

“No specific information has been shared by Canada on this case, either then or before or after," India’s foreign minister spokesperson Arindam Bagchi had said.

"We conveyed this to the Canadian side and made it clear to them that we are willing to look at specific information that is provided to us."

Even Canadian Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre has said that Trudeau is yet to provide proof of India’s alleged involvement and asked him to come clean on the issue.

"The prime minister needs to come clean with all the facts. We need to know all the evidence possible so that Canadians can make judgments on that...The prime minister hasn’t provided any facts. He provided a statement and I want to emphasize that he didn’t tell me anymore in private (than) he told Canadians in public, so we want to see more information," Poilievre said last week after Trudeau’s explosive allegations in the parliament.

The Commerce Department, which oversees export policy, added a total of 28 firms, including some Finnish and German companies, to a trade blacklist, making it harder for US&nbsp;suppliers to ship them technology.

Nine of the companies, including China’s Asia Pacific Links Ltd. and Russia’s SMT-iLogic, allegedly took part in a scheme to supply the previously blacklisted Special Technology Center with drone parts for Russia’s Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff (GRU).

An investigation by Reuters and iStories, a Russian media outlet, in collaboration with the Royal United Services Institute, a defence think tank in London, last year uncovered a logistical trail that spans the globe and ends at the Orlan drone’s production line, the Special Technology Centre in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The investigation found that Hong Kong-based exporter Asia Pacific Links Ltd. has been among the most important suppliers to Russia’s drone program. The firm, along with import company SMT iLogic, were the target of an earlier round of U.S. sanctions in May.

The companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

“We will not hesitate to take swift and meaningful action against those who continue seeking to supply and support Putin’s illegal and immoral war in Ukraine,” the Commerce Department’s export controls chief Alan Estevez said in a statement.

Another six Chinese entities were added for allegedly procuring aerospace parts for the Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Company that are used to make drones used by Iran to attack oil tankers in the Middle East and by Russia in Ukraine, according to the Commerce Department.

The Special Technology Center in St. Petersburg, Russia, which once made a variety of surveillance gadgets for the Russian government and now focuses on drones for the military, was first targeted by U.S. sanctions after former President Barack Obama said it had worked with Russian military intelligence to try to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

The United States has aggressively used a trade blacklist known as the entity list to target China’s tech sector and attempt to stymie Russia’s war in Ukraine.
