Kevin McCarthy was ousted as the Speaker of US House of Commons, becoming the first in the country’s 234-year&nbsp;history to be removed from office.

This was orchestrated by his fellow hardliner eight Republican party members with the help of the Democrats.

The vote stood at 216-210, setting the stage for an unprecedented contest to replace McCarthy a year before the presidential election.

Shortly after being removed from the office, the California Republican told reporters that he would not run for the job again.

“I believe I can continue to fight, maybe in a different manner. I will not run for speaker again; I’ll have the conference pick somebody else," the 58-year-old leader told reporters.&nbsp;

"I ended up being the 55th speaker of the House— one of the greatest honours. I loved every minute," he said.

McCarthy added that he did not regret standing up for choosing to govern over grievance, adding it was his responsibility and his job.

Hitting out at the Republicans who were responsible for his ouster, McCarthy said, "My fear is the institution fell today because you can't do the job if eight people, you have 94 per cent of, or 96 per cent of your entire conference, but eight people can partner with the whole other side. How do you govern?"

<h2>What led to McCarthy’s ouster?</h2>

McCarthy’s run at the speakership lasted for only nine months. His historic removal was the result of a charge led by Florida Republican Matt Gaetz after he cut a deal with Democrats to fund the government for another 45 days — just before it would have otherwise shut down.

When Republicans took control of the House in January, McCarthy was struggling to get the backing of a majority of the House to become speaker.

It is believed that a group of Republicans led by Gaetz withheld their support to extract several concessions from him.

One of their most pressing complaints was the process by which Congress funds the government, which they claim allows for runaway government spending.

Several branches of government departments, like the Pentagon and Homeland Security, are funded through individual appropriations bills that set spending levels for the year ahead.

These bills typically must be passed by Congress and signed by the president by the start of the new fiscal year on October 1 to avoid a government shutdown.

In recent years, however, Congress has missed that deadline. To buy more time, lawmakers pass what's known in Washington as a "continuing resolution," which funds the government at current levels for a certain period of time, usually until the holidays.

Then they use this time to club all of the individual spending bills into one massive piece of legislation called an "omnibus" that funds the various departments until the following October, when the cycle repeats again.

Gaetz and his fellow colleagues wanted to put an end to that practice, and return to "regular order" — the consideration and passage of the individual, annual spending bills.

Through this, Gaetz and his colleagues wanted to extract deeper spending cuts than would otherwise be possible through an omnibus bill, which is often hastily approved with less popular provisions tied to must-pass items.

<h2>Patrick McHenry is now the acting speaker</h2>

Following the historic vote, Republican leader from North Carolina Patrick McHenry took charge as the interim speaker.

According to House rules, McHenry was chosen from a list Kevin McCarthy was required to keep of members who can serve in his position in the event the&nbsp;chair is vacated.

He will serve as the acting speaker — known as speaker pro tempore — until the chamber figures out who will be the next leader.

For McHenry, the interim job marks his most public position to date during his 10 terms in the House, reports AP news agency.

McHenry can serve in the temporary role indefinitely, however, he does not have the power to bring legislation to the floor or take it off.

McHenry also does not have the power to issue subpoenas or sign off on any other official House business that would require the approval of the speaker.

<h2>What will happen next?</h2>

The first order of business for McHenry would be to elect&nbsp;a new speaker.

Currently, it is not clear who will the Republicans nominate for the speakership. According to AP news agency, some members wanted to renominate McCarthy and vote for him for speaker until it passes, but with him declaring otherwise, the path is clear for any Republican to jump in.

Once Republicans decide who to nominate for speaker, the House would have to vote as many times as it takes for a candidate to receive the majority of those present and voting for speaker.

Former US president Donald Trump has dropped out of the Forbes 400 list of wealthy American individuals after his net worth dwindled by more than $600 million.

Trump’s net worth now stands at $2.6 billion, according to the magazine, which had valued the real estate tycoon at $3.2 billion in the 2022 list.

The richest person continues to be Tesla CEO Elon Musk, with a net worth of $251 billion,&nbsp;according&nbsp;to the ranking.

The exclusion comes in the wake of Trump facing a civil fraud trial in New York where he is accused of vastly overrepresenting his wealth and the values of many of his properties.

Forbes said that Trump, “who has been obsessed with getting featured on the list for decades”, had been relentlessly “lying to reporters to try to vault himself higher on the list”.

<h2>Truth Social</h2>

The biggest reason for Trump’s exit from the list has been attributed to his Truth Social, the social media platform launched after he was banned from Twitter (before it was rechristened to X) in the wake of the Capitol riots.

So far, Trump’s social media platform has been able to attract only 6.5 million users, about 1 per cent of X.

The former president’s 90 per cent stake in Truth Social’s parent company has plummeted in value from an estimated $730 million to less than $100 million, Forbes noted.

"If Trump's platform were thriving, he would probably have no trouble finding alternate financing. But it's not, and there is little reason to be optimistic about Truth Social's future," Forbes noted.

It comes as Trump Media &amp; Technology Group, the parent company of Truth Social, has been unable to take the company public due to negative reviews by regulatory agencies.&nbsp;

Forbes has also noted that apart from Truth Social, Trump’s office buildings have also declined in value by $170 million.

A faction of Mexico’s dreaded gang <a name="_Hlk147259235">Sinaloa </a>put up banners across the state declaring that they have stopped the production and sale&nbsp;of fentanyl — a drug that is more potent than heroin.

The decree was reported ordered by the sons of ex-Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

On Monday, the banners, also called "narcomantas", appeared in the northern Sinaloa state, Reuters news agency reported.

The banners were signed by Los Chapitos — a grouping of brothers who took over their father's criminal empire when Guzman was extradited to the United States in 2017. The sons are known as “the Chapitos” after their famous father.

“In Sinaloa, the sale, manufacture, transport or any other business dealing with fentanyl, is strictly prohibited, including the sale of chemicals used to produce it,” the banners read. “You have been warned. Respectfully, Chapitos.”

<h2>US pressure on Mexico</h2>

The banners appeared at a time when US authorities are ramping up pressure on Mexico to take action against crime groups involved in fentanyl production.

This year, the US government declared the "little Chapos" as the principal providers of fentanyl into the United States.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 109,680 overdose deaths occurred last year in the United States, and about 75,000 of those were linked to fentanyl and other synthetic opioids.

Mexico’s dreaded Sinaloa cartel ‘puts up’ banners announcing to stop sale of fentanyl

Algeria said that coup-hit Niger has accepted its proposal to mediate in its political crisis. In a statement on Monday (Oct 2), the North African country’s foreign ministry said, "The Algerian government has received via the Nigerien ministry of foreign affairs a (statement of) acceptance of Algerian mediation aimed at promoting a political solution to the crisis in Niger."

The Niger junta was yet to respond on the development.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has tasked Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf with "visiting Niamey as soon as possible with the aim of launching discussions... with all stakeholders," the statement said.

<h2>A path towards ‘peaceful resolution’ </h2>

The mediation would "pave the way" towards a "peaceful" resolution of the crisis, it added, saying such an outcome is in the interest "of the entire region".

Algeria has proposed a six-month transition period in the country led by civilians.

Algeria was the first to propose to its neighbouring country a peaceful transition to constitutional order.

In late August, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf said Algeria had spoken several times to Niger's military leaders and proposed such an initiative&nbsp;which would aim to "formulate political arrangements with the acceptance of all parties in Niger without excluding any party".

On August 6, Algeria President Tebboune had “categorically” denounced any foreign military intervention in Niger, which borders Algeria to the south.

The regional Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)&nbsp;had threatened military intervention in Niger to reinstate Bazoum, but it has not taken any action so far.

<h2>Niger’s ousted prez files case against junta</h2>

On July 26, members of Niger's presidential guard detained President Mohamed Bazoum and seized power in the African country.&nbsp;

Following the military takeover, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, leader of Niger's presidential guard, was named "president of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland."

According to the deal, the grain inspections that were earlier carried out at the Ukraine-Poland border would now be done at a Lithuanian port on the Baltic Sea.

"From tomorrow, grains that transit (to world markets) via Lithuania will undergo checks at a Lithuanian port and not at the Poland-Ukraine border," Polish Agriculture Minister Robert Telus told journalists.

After undergoing inspections for pests and plant diseases, which will take place from Wednesday, the grain would be exported from the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda by sea around the world.

The move seeks to facilitate the transit of Ukrainian exports through Polish territory, a statement from the Ukrainian farm ministry said, without providing further details.

However, because of logistical issues, grain began piling up in EU states neighbouring Ukraine and driving down local prices.

But when it ended those restrictions in mid-September, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia extended the ban, causing a diplomatic spat between Kyiv and its allies.

In response, Ukraine complained to the World Trade Organization as the spat worsened.

Zia, who is under house arrest after being released from prison, has been hospitalised since early August with advanced liver cirrhosis, breathing difficulties, and diabetes. In 2008, she was jailed for 17 years on graft charges.

She also reportedly suffers from a heart condition, rheumatoid arthritis, and knee problems, her doctor has said, according to AFP news agency.

But Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina justified her actions, asserting that she must serve her prison sentence before she&nbsp;gets permission to leave the country.

"She must go back to prison first if she wants to go abroad for treatment,” Hasina told VOA Bangla news outlet on Sunday (Oct 1) when asked about Zia.

"If they [BNP] want to take her [Khaleda Zia] abroad, they must go to court and apply for it. She can go if the court permits," Hasina said.

Last week, thousands of BNP supporters protested against the government's actions towards Zia.

The BNP and its allies have staged a series of protests since last year demanding Hasina step down and allow a caretaker government to oversee the elections.

Zia must go to prison first before leaving for life-saving treatment abroad, says PM Hasina

Two back-to-back earthquakes of magnitude 6.2 and 4.6 on the Richter Scale struck Nepal on Tuesday (Oct 3) afternoon in less than half an hour,&nbsp;with tremors also being felt in large parts of the neighbouring country India, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported.

Hours later, two more earthquakes were recorded in Nepal, however of slightly lower magnitude at 3.06 pm and 3.19 pm.&nbsp; 
 
According to the NCS,&nbsp;Nepal was first hit by an earthquake of magnitude 4.6 at 2.25 pm local time,&nbsp;occurring&nbsp;at a depth of 10 kilometres. Later at 2.51 pm, another tremor&nbsp;of magnitude 6.2 jolted the Himalayan country at a depth of 5 kilometres, the effects of which were also felt in northern India, including Uttarakhand and Delhi-NCR, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh states.

The epicentre of the quakes was registered around western Nepal's Bajhang district while in India,&nbsp;the epicentre was recorded 206 kilometres southeast of Joshimath in Uttarakhand and 284 km north of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh.

Interior ministry official Rama Acharya told Reuters that the quakes reportedly blocked a major highway in Nepal,&nbsp;an important route in the southern plains. According to local media reports, at least 12 people were injured, but no reports of casualties have come to the fore till now.

“In the Delhi region, the magnitude was 3...We have received responses from people that it was felt in Uttarakhand, Punjab, Delhi, Lucknow region, Jaipur region. A few people in Ahmedabad region are also telling us that they felt it there..." said National Centre for Seismology scientist Sanjay Kumar Prajapati, reports PTI news agency.

Four earthquakes in an hour rock Nepal, tremors felt in India too

Scientists Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L’Huillier were awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics “for experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses of light for the study of electron dynamics in the matter.”

These scientists have been recognised for their “experiments, which have given humanity new tools for exploring the world of electrons inside atoms and molecules”, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the award-giving body, said in a statement.

Their work could advance medical diagnostics and electronics, it added.

“Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L’Huillier have demonstrated a way to create extremely short pulses of light that can be used to measure the rapid processes in which electrons move or change energy,” it said.

“The laureates’ contributions have enabled the investigation of processes that are so rapid they were previously impossible to follow,” it added.

<h2>What was the experiment about?</h2>

As mentioned, these scientists carried out an experiment that&nbsp;generated attosecond pulses of light. An attosecond is one-quintillionth of a second, or one-billionth of a nanosecond.

This experiment&nbsp;allows scientists to look at the very smallest particles at the very shortest timescales, in this case in an attosecond. The laureates developed experiments to be able to produce these ultrafast laser pulses, which can be used to probe our world at the smallest scales and have applications across chemistry, biology and physics.

<h2>L'Huillier fifth woman to receive Nobel Prize in physics</h2>

Addressing a news conference after the announcement, L'Huillier,&nbsp;who is only the fifth woman to receive a Nobel in physics, said, "It is really a prestigious prize and I'm so happy to get it. It's incredible."

L'Huillier works at Lund University in Sweden, while Agostini is a professor at Ohio State University. Krausz is the director at Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics.

Maldives President-elect Mohamed Muizzu, who is known for his pro-China stance, has reiterated his commitment to remove all the foreign soldiers deployed on the island.

Muizzu’s remarks came at an event held on Monday night to mark his victory in the recently concluded presidential election, Maldives-based Sunonline news outlet reported.

He was referring to India’s military presence in the region where China has been trying to increase its influence.

In that event, he stressed that he would ensure the Maldives remained “independent”, and noted that the people had voted for him to ensure that his pledge was fulfilled.

He further said that he would initiate his move after he is sworn in, adding that he will act within the constraints of the law.

“The people have told us that they don't want foreign military here,” he said.

“Therefore, what I have to say to the ambassador who will come to meet me is close relations can be maintained based on this condition,” he added.

<h2>Part of Muizzu’s decades-long ‘India out strategy'</h2>

Mohamed Muizzu’s Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) fought this year’s election on the claims that his outgoing predecessor Ibrahim Mohamed Solih allowed India an unchecked presence in the Indian Ocean region.

India has reportedly asked Canada to withdraw 41 of its diplomats from the country by October 10 in the latest sign of escalation that erupted after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged, without any evidence, that so-called “Indian government agents” were responsible for the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Financial Times newspaper’s report, citing people familiar with India’s demand, on Monday (Oct 3) stated that New Delhi has threatened Canada that their envoys' diplomatic immunity would be stripped off if they didn’t leave the country.

Canada has 62 diplomats in India and New Delhi wanted the presence to be significantly scaled down, the newspaper said.

The development comes days after India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) sought a “parity” of diplomats in strength and rank equivalence in mutual diplomatic presence.

"Their numbers here are very much higher than India's diplomatic presence...We have seen Canadian diplomatic interference in our internal affairs. This is being taken into account and parity is being sought in rank and diplomatic strength. We think Canadian numbers will go down. Discussions are going on," MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said on September 21.

India had already banned visas for Canadians the day after Trudeau made his bombshell claim on September 18.

One of the terrorists responsible for the Sunday attack near Turkish parliament in Ankara capital has been identified as Hasan Oguz, an operative of proscribed terrorist outfit Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

The announcement came hours after the Turkish authorities launched a fresh crackdown across the state in which 20 people with alleged links to the Kurdish militant group were detained.&nbsp;

Interior minister Ali Yerlikaya said that more than two dozen “operations” were carried out in Istanbul and Kırklareli, a city in Turkey’s far north-west.

Those arrested included district presidents and a provincial spokesperson for the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic party (HDP), Yerlikaya said.

The PKK is a militant group that has been waging an armed campaign against the Turkish state since 1984.

On Sunday, it had claimed responsibility for the attack.&nbsp;The ANF News website, which is close to the PKK, cited the militant group as saying that a team from its Immortals Battalion unit had carried out the attack.

Efforts and investigations to identify the other terrorist continue, it added.

The attack happened around 9.30 am (local time) when a suicide bomber blew himself up in front of the General Directorate of Security, injuring two police officers on duty. The other terrorist was “neutralised” by the security forces at the entrance.
