Pest control experts in the UK are unleashing sniffer dogs in homes, hotels and businesses to combat the menace of bed bugs.

Several hotels and businesses have been battling an explosion of infestation&nbsp;ever since the decline of COVID-19 boosted tourism.

While the rise of bedbugs has been causing trauma for many, it has boosted the business of UK specialist firms that have trained sniffer dogs to detect the infestation&nbsp;everywhere from private homes to five-star hotels.

On average, these firms charge £150 to £350 for a three-bedroom house.&nbsp;

<h2>Booming business&nbsp;</h2>

Gary Jakeman, the chief executive of K9 Detection Services in Solihull in the West Midlands, told the Guardian that he is being sought after by many luxurious hotels to tackle the menace.

“We’re getting more and more interest. We’ve probably had a 25% increase in callouts since June,” said Jakeman, who has two trained springer spaniels, Milo and Kobie.

“These dogs are spot on. There’s very little that can get past a well-trained nose.”

The dogs are trained in the same manner they are taught to smell drugs, explosives and stashes of money.

<h2>How dogs sniff out bedbugs</h2>

In the case of bedbugs, the dogs can detect a pheromone the insects release to help them group together. It usually takes at least a year to 18 months to train a new dog to sniff out bedbugs.

“In very high concentrations, you can smell it yourself,” Dr Richard Naylor, the director of the Bed Bug Foundation, which provides information on the insects and works with canine training schools to certify dogs for bedbug detection, told Guardian. “They produce a very pungent, recognisable smell.”

Moreover, the efficacy of dogs in tracing the bedbugs far surpasses the typical methods employed by pest control.

"It could take someone in pest control 20 minutes to find the bedbugs, if they can find them," Leith, of BDL Canine Services in South Lanarkshire, told the Daily Star.

"To search the whole floor of a hotel is very time-consuming for humans. My boy can sometimes find them in less than ten seconds," he added.

Republican leader Jeff Landry, who is backed by Donald Trump, won the governorship for Louisiana, overthrowing the incumbent Democrat John Bel Edwards.

The Associated Press news agency called the race which saw Landry, the state attorney general, getting 52 per cent of the vote when 95 per cent of the total votes was counted.

This is the first time in eight years that Louisiana went Red after Edwards was unable to seek another run at the office due to consecutive term limits. Edwards is the only Democratic governor in the Deep South.

The 52-year-old’s campaign was filled with conservative policy positions, including calling for a ban on gender-affirming medical care for transgender youths, the state's near-total abortion ban that doesn't have exceptions for cases of rape and incest, and a law restricting youths' access to "sexually explicit material" in libraries, which has raised concerns over the possibility of cracking down on LGBTQ+ books.

But apart from these, Landry’s top priorities as governor would be addressing crime in urban areas, as discussed repeatedly during his campaign.

<h2>Campaign rooted in local issues</h2>

The Republican has pushed tough-on-crime rhetoric, calling for more "transparency" in the justice system and continuing to support capital punishment. Louisiana has the nation's second-highest murder rate per capita.

People in a Scottish village have been living in terror as a clown dressed like the film “IT’s” “Pennywise the Dancing Clown” has been lurking on the streets at nights, issuing messages to media and daring the police to catch them.

The person, wearing red hair, collar, ruffled leggings has been stalking the residents of Skelmorlie—a town of about 2,000 people—at night for the past three years, holding a red balloon.

The creepy clown usually comes in October—the month of Halloween—and then disappears.

So far, no one has been able to identify the clown's true identity, reports Sky News.

The clown recently released a video on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/100073398488601/videos/661399319421128/?ref=embed_video&amp;t=0">Facebook</a>.

“Well, well, well, I’ve made the news again. Should I smile for the cameras with my hideous grin?” a distorted voice said in a Facebook post titled, “A message to the media.”

Referring to reports that police had been aware of their activities, the clown says: “Do you think I care? They’d have to catch me first anyway.

“And yes, that’s a dare”.

The video was uploaded under the name of Cole Deimos, in which the masked person allegedly threatened those around Skelmorlie, a town located 35 miles from the country’s capital of Edinburgh.

The account’s biography section states the clown is from Hell, Michigan, attended Hellgate High School in Montana, and studied at Clown School before becoming self-employed.

The residents have been left terrified with the clown’s antics who have urged the enforcement authorities to nab the masked person.

“Whoever this is they are scaring everybody – he needs to be stopped,” a local father-of-two told the Independent.

“Someone needs to have a word with him before the police get involved or he really terrifies someone. He could give someone a heart attack.”

According to Sky News, the police in Scotland are aware of the scary videos, but they have not received any reports.

Pennywise the Dancing Clown is the main antagonist in Stephen King's novel It, which also spawned three movies, including sequels.

The character stalks the streets of Derry in Maine, where he kills children roughly every 27 years.

McDonald’s triggered a massive furore, especially in Arab countries, after its Israel unit announced that it has been providing meals to Israeli soldiers free of cost amidst its ongoing war with the Hamas group.

In an Instagram post, the US food giant said that it has been donating "tens of thousands of meals," across Israel over the past few days during the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.

"McDonald's donated and continues to donate tens of thousands of meals to IDF units, the police, hospitals, residents around the Strip and all rescue forces. We continue donating thousands of meals daily to our forces across the country. In addition to a 50% discount to soldiers and security forces who come to our branches," the post read in Hebrew.

It further said that it has opened five additional branches for the sole purpose of providing aid and donations to Israeli security forces and that it plans to deliver 4,000 meals daily.

The fast food giant has donated 12,000 meals to the IDF and Israeli residents in the surrounding areas, according to a&nbsp;post on Thursday.

But the move was severely criticised by many Arab nations who started calling for the boycott of the burger joint across the globe.

A user on social med Z wrote, “McDonald's&nbsp;providing free meals to the IDF, (the military forces of Israel). We should stand by our principles and take actions that align with our beliefs. Lets boycott McDonalds bcz Supporting companies that are involved in conflicts is wrong, especially when it comes to the loss of innocent lives."

The poster continued: "Let's raise awareness and encourage accountability from these brands. Remember, every individual's voice and actions can make a difference in shaping a more just world."

Another user commented, “What a gross act @McDonalds. Israel cut food, water, and electricity in Gaza and you are giving them free meals. What a shame.”

Following the announcement, McDonald's Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, UAE and Turkey units took out statements in support of Gaza, while Pakistan’s franchise distanced itself from the post.

Iran’s foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian communicated Tehran’s views through the UN that it won’t remain a “silent spectator”.

The remarks were shared during a meeting in Beirut on Saturday (Oct 14) with Tor Wennesland, the UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, Axios news outlet reported.

The meeting between Amir-Abdollahian and Wennesland at the Iranian Embassy in Beirut was later confirmed by the Iranian Foreign Ministry, however, the contents of the discussion were not disclosed.

Axios quoting diplomatic sources claimed that Iran might get involved through a militant group from Syria or by backing Hezbollah to join the conflict.

<h2>Tensions escalate&nbsp;</h2>

Amir-Abdollahian also reportedly said that Iran does not want the conflict to escalate and has offered to help release Israelis held hostage by Hamas in Gaza.

Amir-Abdollahian also stressed that his country has "red lines" and told the UN envoy that if Israel's attacks continue, and especially if a land attack on Gaza is launched, Iran "will have to respond."

Later briefing the media, Iran’s foreign minister called on Israel to stop its attacks on Gaza, and said that if Israel continues with its operations, it may “suffer huge earthquake”.

Concerns about Iran’s intervention were expressed by the US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan who said that Washington has been communicating with Iran privately to make clear “that which we have said publicly,” that Iran should not intervene in the conflict.

The Indian Supreme Court has turned down the plea of a 26-week pregnant woman for abortion on the grounds that she is suffering from a mental condition called post-partum psychosis.

The apex court also admitted the central government’s submission that it is willing to undertake the expenses of delivery and if parents desire, facilitate the child's adoption.

In the petition, the woman, who already has two children, said that she was suffering from post-partum psychosis and was not in a position to raise a third child, emotionally, financially, and physically.

The bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud reached the decision based on a report by the AIIMS medical board that the pregnancy is not an immediate danger to the life of the woman and that the foetus is healthy.

<h2>Violates law&nbsp;</h2>

The court denied permission to terminate the pregnancy since its duration had crossed the 24-week mark and added that letting the married woman to continue with her decision would violate Sections 3 and 5 of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act.

Abortion is allowed under the MTP Act if the pregnancy doesn’t cross 24 weeks mark for married women, for special categories including survivors of rape, and other vulnerable women, such as the differently-abled and minors.

"This court is averse to passing such a direction. The petitioner also doesn't wish to do the same," the court said, reported LiveLaw outlet.

The top court also brushed aside an intervention during the proceeding that sought to challenge the upper limit for medical termination.

The court stated that the challenge to the existing law would be addressed through separate proceedings, while the ongoing petition shall remain a matter exclusively between the petitioner and the state.

<h2>‘24-week guideline obsolete’</h2>

Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, who was arguing on behalf of the petitioner, cited a report of the World Health Organisation (WHO) which had already termed the 24-week guideline ‘obsolete’.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday (Oct 15) vowed to crush Hamas in Gaza, as the military prepares for all-round ground operations to weed out the terrorist group and take control of the region.

The prime minister’s remarks came during the first cabinet meeting of the united government that was formed recently in the wake of the assault unleashed by Hamas.

The meeting was held in military headquarters in Tel Aviv which began with ministers standing for a moment's silence in memory of the 1,300 Israelis killed in the surprise October 7 onslaught, a video released by Netanyahu's office showed.

Welcoming former opposition lawmaker Benny Gantz, who joined the government along with several members of his party last week, Netanyahu said all ministers were "working around the clock, with a united front".

"Hamas thought we would be demolished. It is we who will demolish Hamas," Netanyahu said, adding that the show of unity "sends a clear message to the nation, the enemy and the world", reported Reuters news agency.

<h2>Casualties keep mounting&nbsp;</h2>

Gaza too recorded one of its worst casualties with more than 2,300 people killed in Israel's retaliatory strikes so far, a quarter of them children, and nearly 10,000 wounded.

Several local media reports have said that hospitals in Gaza are running short of supplies and struggling to cope with the flow of injured.

The Israeli military had on Sunday given three hours for Gaza citizens to move to the southern side immediately as it prepared to invade the region.

"Residents of Gaza City, I call upon you again: Hamas is trying to prevent your evacuation. We will enable it southward. Leave Gaza City and all the surrounding areas for the sake of your personal security," reiterated chief Israeli military spokesperson Daniel Hagari on Sunday.

<h2>Hezbollah launches attack </h2>

On Sunday, Iran-backed Hezbollah fighters&nbsp;launched a missile&nbsp;at an Israeli border village, killing one person and wounding three others. The Israeli military said it was striking in Lebanon in retaliation.

The tallest statue of BR Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, was inaugurated outside India&nbsp;in the United States’ Washington.

Around 500 Indian-Americans gathered at the Maryland suburbs on Saturday (Oct 14) to formally inaugurate the 19 feet statue sculpted by Ram Sutar, who also built the statue of Sardar Patel, India's first home minister,&nbsp;in Gujarat. For context, Patel’s statue is named “Statue of Unity”.

The statue, which has been named "Statue of Equality", is a replica of the world’s largest Ambedkar statue located in India’s southern Hyderabad city which is 125 feet tall.

"We are calling it the Statue of Equality… this (inequality) is not only the problem in India, everywhere (in) different forms (it exists)," Ram Kumar, president of the Ambedkar International Center (AIC) told PTI news agency after the statue unveiling ceremony.

The AIC is a civil rights advocacy group which was formed in 2012 to fight against caste discrimination in the United States.

The AIC in Accokeek township is spread over 13 acres, some 22 miles south of the White House. It consists of a library, convention center, and Buddha Garden among others.

"This is a great occasion to participate in the unveiling ceremony of the statue of Babasaheb. This is the tallest statue of Babasaheb in America. ..After 75 years of independence, the people are realizing the works done by Dr. Ambedkar and that's the reason why day by day he's getting the popularity, …people are now understanding him in a proper way.

The timing and date of the unveiling of the statue have historical significance as it was on this very day in 1956&nbsp;that Ambedkar embraced Buddhism.

The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) has given Gaza citizens three hours to evacuate the northern region as it prepares for an all-out coordinated attack against Hamas terrorists.

In a post on X on Sunday (Oct 15), the IDF said that no military activity would occur from 10 am&nbsp;to 1 pm (local time) and asked 1.1 million people living in Northern Gaza to use the time to evacuate.

"Residents of Gaza City and northern Gaza, in the past days, we've urged you to relocate to the southern area for your safety. We want to inform you that the IDF will not carry out any operations along this route from 10 pm to 1 pm," the Israeli military said.

"During this window, please take the opportunity to move southward from northern Gaza," it said.

The announcement comes a day after Israel pummelled northern Gaza with fresh air strikes on Saturday.

<h2>Gaza besieged </h2>

Israel had already blocked northern Gaza, cutting off food, water, electricity, medical supplies and other essentials including electricity.

UN chief Antonio Guterres has “been in&nbsp;constant contact with Israeli authorities urging them to avert a humanitarian catastrophe,” a spokesperson for Guterres, Stephen Dujarric told AP.&nbsp;

Earlier in the day, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited troops on the border front line, raising expectations of an imminent invasion.

"Are you ready for what is coming? More is coming," he was heard telling several soldiers on a video released by his office, according to AFP news agency.

Meanwhile, the United States has deployed a second aircraft carrier near Israel to "deter hostile actions against Israel", Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin said.

On Saturday. the World Health Organisation said that forcing thousands of hospital patients to evacuate to already overflowing hospitals in the southern Gaza Strip could be "tantamount to a death sentence".

Exiled Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh accused Israel on Saturday of committing "war crimes" in Gaza but he ruled out any "displacement" of Gazans, including to Egypt.

In a call Saturday, US President Joe Biden told Netanyahu the United States was working with the United Nations, Egypt, Jordan and others in the region "to ensure innocent civilians have access to water, food, and medical care".
