Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions condemned the "abominable assault" and said it caused great concern for the Jewish community, but said it was up to the courts to determine whether it had been anti-Semitic, Sky News reported.

Jewish woman stabbed in France in suspected case of hate crime

The Russian mercenary group Wagner has resumed recruiting fighters and is now being headed by Yevgeny Prigozhin’s son Pavel, Russian media reported.

The development was confirmed by 59.RU news outlet on Tuesday (Oct 31), which cited a representative of Wagner in Perm city.

Another Russian outlet NGS.RU, citing a source in the mercenary organisation's local branch, also reported on Wednesday that Wagner has started hiring fighters.

However, this outlet did not mention Pavel assuming charge.

The local media reported that recruitment is currently taking place in the country’s Perm and Novosibirsk regions.

The reports claimed to have spotted recruitment posters in Wagner's Perm office on VKontakte, and on Telegram, listing several requirements for prospective recruits.

<h2>Starts mass hiring again&nbsp;&nbsp;</h2>

In posts titled "We're coming back," they said that the hopeful joiners need to have a Russian passport for operations outside the country, records of their families and close relatives, and vaccination certificates.

"The emblems and symbols remain the same. We recruit those who already have combat experience, including those who already worked for the PMC (private military company). The only difference is that we hire only free people, not from prisons," a local Wagner representative told news site 59.RU.

According to some reports, after the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin in an air crash in August 2023, his 25-year-old son Pavel took over the leadership and assumed command of remnants of Wagner.

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who first raised the “gifts-for-query” allegations against TMC MP Mahua Moitra, on Thursday (Nov 1) said that the lady parliamentarian is trying to build a wrong narrative about the proceedings of the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee after the latter walked out of the panel citing "unprofessional line of questions".

Earlier in the day, opposition party members on the panel and Moitra stormed out alleging that members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) asked “unethical and personal questions” to her.&nbsp;They also claimed that the line of questioning was “inappropriate”.

The opposition members also raised objections to “personal questions” being asked by the panel chairman and ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Vinod Sonkar, saying that&nbsp;they were “demeaning to the lady MP”.

Dubey brushed aside her allegations, saying that appropriate punishment would be meted out to Moitra.

"No power&nbsp;in the world can save Moitra" given the evidence submitted by him, advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai, businessman Darshan Hiranandani, the IT ministry, home ministry and the external affairs ministry in the matter, the BJP leader said, according to PTI news agency.

Sonkar also rebuffed Moitra’s allegations claiming that she stormed out because she didn't want to face questions.

“The Opposition MPs, including Danish Ali, Girdhari Yadav etc, unethically and in great anger, levelled some allegations against the committee... They walked out of the panel's meeting to escape answering questions on Darshan Hiranandani's allegations," Vinod Sonkar told reporters.

<h2>'Most unethical hearing possible'</h2>

Speaking to PTI news agency, Moitra lambasted the ethics panel committee, terming it the "most unethical hearing possible".

“Five members of the Ethics committee walked out on Chairperson's behaviour. It was anything but an Ethics committee, it was the most unethical hearing possible. The chairperson was reading from a pre-written script which contained most disgusting, invasive and private details of my personal life which have nothing to do with the hearing," Moitra told PTI news agency.

The matter came to light after Dubey claimed to have received a letter from a lawyer named Jai Anant Dehadrai stating that Moitra accepted "cash and gifts" from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in order to "ask questions in Parliament".

He said the letter reveals indisputable proof of bribes exchanged between Moitra and Darshan Hiranandani.

'No power in world can save Mahua Moitra in cash for query scam', says BJP MP Nishikant Dubey

A boat carrying more than 25 people capsized in India’s eastern Bihar state on Wednesday (Nov 1) evening, in which three people died, while 18 others are believed to be missing.

This is the second major boat tragedy that has taken place in the state.

The incident took place in Saran district’s Saryu River near Matiyar Ghat, near the Uttar Pradesh border.

Nine people managed to swim to safety, while two women were fished out from the water. Officials are still looking for the missing persons.

“The incident took place around 6.30 pm (local time) when a boat carrying 18 people drowned in Saryu River near Matiyar Ghat in Manjhi block," Saran District Magistrate Aman Samir told PTI news agency.

"A rescue operation has been launched and we are trying to identify the deceased," he said, adding further probe is underway to ascertain the cause of the incident.

<h2>Boat carrying people way beyond its capacity&nbsp;</h2>

However, according to some reports, the boat was carrying around 25, way beyond its capacity.

Three dead, 18 missing after boat turns turtle in India’s Bihar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday jointly inaugurated three projects via virtual mode, including a key rail link between Tripura’s Nischintapur and Gangasagar in the neighbouring country.

The other two projects inaugurated by Modi and Hasina are the 65-km Khulna-Mongla Port Rail Line and Unit 2 of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant in Bangladesh’s Rampal.

The cross-border rail project near Tripura’s capital Agartala and Akhaura in Bangladesh is expected to boost cross-border trade, and significantly reduce the travel time between Agartala and Kolkata via Dhaka.

Modi said the inauguration of the Agartala-Akhaura Cross Border Rail Link was a “historic” moment. "This is the first rail link between the northeast and Bangladesh," he said. All the three projects are India-assisted development initiatives.

The trial run of the 12.24-km rail project (6.78 km dual gauge line in Bangladesh and 5.46 km in Tripura) was completed on Monday, after a train from Gangasagar railway station in Brahmanbaria district of Bangladesh arrived at Nischintapur railway station.

“It is a matter of joy that we have connected once again to celebrate the success of the India-Bangladesh cooperation. In the past nine years, the work we have done together has not happened in decades,” Modi said in an interaction with Hasina over video-conference.

Hasina said the three projects would further strengthen the infrastructure development collaboration between the two countries.

“The joint inauguration of these important projects shows that we have a strong bond of friendship and collaboration... I also thank PM Modi for the warm hospitality during my visit in September for the G20 Summit,” she said.

&nbsp;“I think it is an instance for the world. We have proved that good relations with the neighbour accelerate the country’s development. It is a demonstration of having rare friendly relations and mutual cooperation. Bangladesh and India will attain many successes in the days to come through mutual cooperation, which will strengthen the relationship between the two countries,” Hasina said.&nbsp;

India had extended Rs 392.52 crore as grant assistance to Bangladesh for the Agartala-Akhaura Cross Border Rail Link, officials said.

&nbsp;Meanwhile, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said the rail project would enable the state to become the gateway to other northeastern states for trade, connectivity and tourism, and reduce the distance between Agartala and Kolkata via Dhaka from 1,600 km to 500 km.

As part of the Khulna-Mongla Port Rail Line, a 65-km broad gauge route was constructed between Bangladesh’s Mongla Port and the existing rail network in Khulna.

The Khulna–Mongla rail link line will help operate trains from Mongla to some of the western destinations of Bangladesh Railways and also to Dhaka via Khulna and Padma Bridge.

Bangladesh officials earlier said the line aims to operate freight trains to Gede, Radikapur and Singhabad of India and also some other destinations of Nepal and Bhutan.

The 1,320-MW Maitree Super Thermal Power Project was implemented by the Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Ltd, a 50:50 joint venture between India's NTPC and the Bangladesh Power Development Board. The plant is located at Rampal in Khulna division of Bangladesh.

20-year-old Indian-origin Israeli solider killed during war with Hamas in Gaza

In a shocking case of apathy&nbsp;in India’s capital Delhi, a budding 30-year-old filmmaker bled to death on a road as onlookers, instead of taking him to a hospital, were busy recording videos and clicking selfies, with some even&nbsp;stealing his belongings.

The accident happened at 9.45 pm (local time) at a busy stretch connecting IIT crossing and Nehru Place on Tuesday (Oct 31).

For almost half-an-hour, Piyush Pal—who got severe head injuries after his bike collided with another and crashed into a tree—lay bleeding on the busy road of South Delhi even as his life was slowly ebbing away.

Police claimed that they were informed of the accident only at 10.11 pm, Indian Express newspaper reported.

Nobody moved for several minutes until a few concerned persons stepped in to help.

<h2>No one stepped in to help&nbsp;</h2>

Pankaj Mistry, a passerby who was on his bike with his brother, spotted a huge gathering on the road and stopped to check.

“I saw a man on the road, bleeding heavily from his head, with his bike a few metres away. No one bothered to help him, call an ambulance or police,” Mistry told The Indian Express.

Mistry said that he, along with his brother and another person, quickly hailed an auto and took Pal to a nearby clinic.

However, the clinic lacked adequate facilities to treat the injured man, following which they all went to PSRI Hospital, which took them nearly an hour to reach.

At the same time, a police team arrived at the accident spot at 10.30 pm, but found that Pal and another injured were taken to separate hospitals.

<h2>‘If only bystanders had responded quickly</h2>

The police also found that Pal’s mobile phone, wallet and bag were stolen.

“It was only when we reached the hospital that we found Pal’s belongings were not on him,” Mistry added

DCP (South) Chandan Chowdhary said that a case under IPC sections pertaining to rash driving and causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others have been filed.&nbsp;

A thick 'apocalyptic haze' engulfed India’s capital Delhi for the third consecutive day on Thursday (Nov 2), with air quality deteriorating to ‘hazardous’ level and residents gasping for fresh air.

Delhi’s Anand Vihar region registered the highest level of air pollution, with the air quality index (AQI) reaching 999. On average, Delhi’s air quality was above 500, according to weather agency aqicn.org.

AQI between 0-50 is considered healthy, while a value over 300 represents hazardous air quality.

India uses AQI as a yardstick to determine how bad the pollution is across the city. The higher the AQI value, the greater the level of air pollution and the greater the health concern.

<h2>Scientists raise alarm&nbsp;</h2>

Scientists have warned that the pollution levels in Delhi and nearby regions would continue to spike for the next two weeks.

Health experts have also raised alarm saying that the rise in air pollution might accentuate respiratory and asthma problems, especially among the children and elderly.

"We are recording a surge in the number of irritative bronchitis infections. It is recommended that people suffering from respiratory issues such as chronic bronchitis and asthma take their medicines regularly and do not go out in the open unless absolutely necessary," Jugal Kishore, the head of the medicine department at Safdarjung Hospital, told PTI news agency.

<h2>Govt panel bans non-essential construction&nbsp;</h2>

Meanwhile, a central pollution panel on Thursday banned non-essential construction activity and the entry of diesel trucks into the capital city.

The measures were adopted as part of the Stage III Graded Action Response Plan, which was framed to tackle the annual surge in pollution in the capital and the surrounding areas.

During a meeting, the committee noted that the pollution was expected to deteriorate further because of the "highly unfavourable meteorological and climatic conditions".

Much of north India often experiences bad air quality during the winter months on account of farmers burning paddy straws and due to the cold temperatures allowing for the trapping of pollutants near the ground, which is also known as temperature inversions.

An Iranian mother who was demanding justice for her son, killed by security officials, has been sent to prison for 13 years

Mahsa Yazdani was found guilty on various charges which include blasphemy, incitement, insulting the supreme leader, and spreading anti-regime propaganda, human rights groups and family members said.

In the first five years of her prison sentence, Yazdani will not be granted parole, they said.

According to Yazdani’s attorney Meysam Mousavi, she was given a five-year term for&nbsp; “blasphemy”, an additional five years of “incitement against national security”, two years for “insulting the Supreme Leader of Iran” and one more year for “spreading propaganda against the regime,” adding to a total of 13 years, the Independent outlet reported.

Yazdani was running an online campaign seeking justice for her 20-year-old son Mohammad Javad Zahedi, who was killed at an anti-regime protest in September 2022.

Zahedi was allegedly shot and wounded by security forces while protesting the death of 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman Mahsa Amini, who had died in police custody after being detained for violating Iran’s mandatory headscarf law.

Zahedi died of his injuries after emergency services failed to treat him, Iran International reported.

A medical examiner’s report confirmed he was killed by numerous shotgun pellets.

CERT-In has started its probe in the Apple threat notification issue raised by opposition MPs, and a notice has been sent to the company, IT Secretary S Krishnan said on Thursday.

Indian Computer Emergency Response Team or CERT-In is the national nodal agency for responding to computer security incidents as and when they occur.

Asked if a notice has been sent to Apple, the IT Secretary answered in the affirmative.

Several Opposition leaders on October 31 claimed they have received an alert from Apple warning them of "state-sponsored attackers trying to remotely compromise" their iPhones and alleged hacking by the government, a charge IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw rejected but assured a thorough probe.
