As Lebanon-based Hezbollah militant group and Israel continue to exchange fires amidst the Hamas war, Beirut’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati said he is trying to ensure that his country doesn’t get dragged into the conflict.

"I am doing my duty to prevent Lebanon from entering the war" raging further south, Mikati told AFP in an interview.

Mikati expressed concerns that Lebanon’s powerful Iran-backed Hezbollah organisation’s skirmishes near the border could renew tensions with Israel and might possibly lead to war.

Mikati, who is considered to enjoy cordial relations with Hezbollah, said he has no "clear answer" about whether war loomed ahead, adding that "it depends on regional developments".

<h2>'Lebanon in the eye of the storm'</h2>

Mikati has inherited a country that is facing a major financial crisis and deep political divisions which have left the country without a president for a year.

In 2006, Israel and Hezbollah fought a bloody conflict that left more than 1,200 people dead in Lebanon, mostly civilians, and 160 in Israel, mostly soldiers.

"For now, Hezbollah has managed the situation rationally and wisely, and the rules of the game have remained constrained to certain limits," Mikati said.

"But at the same time I feel like I cannot reassure Lebanese" because the situation is still developing, he added.

The 67-year-old fears that any escalation with Israel could devastate the entire Middle East.

"I cannot rule out an escalation because there is a race to reach a ceasefire before escalation spreads in the entire region," Mikati said.

The skirmish between Hezbollah and Israel has so far been restricted to the northern border region, with the Israeli military launching counterstrikes.

<h2>Qatar mediating&nbsp;</h2>

At least 62 people have been killed in Lebanon, AFP tally quotes, which includes mostly Hezbollah combatants, apart from four civilians, including a journalist.

Israeli officials have reported four deaths, including one civilian.

Apart from Hezbollah, which is believed to have a bigger arsenal than Lebanon's army, other Iran-backed or affiliated groups have also launched attacks on Israel from Syria and targeted US forces stationed in Iraq and Syria.

Mikati further said that Qatar was playing "an important mediation role", and hoped for a better solution.

"Mediation almost succeeded last Friday, but was disrupted when the Israelis began ground operations in Gaza," he told AFP.

Taking to microblogging site X, Macron said a draft project is being readied and it would be submitted to the State Council, France's highest administrative court, next week.

"In 2024, the right of women to choose&nbsp;abortion&nbsp;will become irreversible," Macron said.

Welcoming the development, the minister for gender equality, Bérangère Couillard, said on X: “This is a victory for all women and a strong symbol sent to other countries of the world where our rights are losing ground.”

The declaration follows a promise made by Macron on March 8 (International Women's Day) in the wake of the US federal court overturning women’s abortion rights last year.

<h2>How French Constitution is amended?</h2>

In France, the constitution can be amended either by a referendum or approval by at least three-fifths of the members of both chambers of parliament united in a congress.

Post the Second World War, most of the changes to the constitution have been made through the congressional vote, notes AFP news agency.

According to Macron's office, Article 34 of the constitution would be amended to include that "the law determines the conditions by which is exercised the freedom of women to have recourse to an abortion, which is guaranteed."

<h2>Abortion laws in France&nbsp;</h2>

France decriminalised abortion in 1975 after passing a law in this regard. However, no changes were made in the constitution that could have guaranteed fundamental rights to pregnancy termination.

Without naming Rajeev Chandrashekhar, the Information and Technology Minister, the chief minister read out a statement of him during a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram.

"Dirty shameless appeasement politics by a discredited CM (and HM) @pinarayivijayan besieged by corruption charges. Sitting in Delhi and protesting against Israel, when in Kerala open calls by Terrorist Hamas for Jihad is causing attacks and bomb blasts on innocent Christians."

Pinarayi said this came from a communal mindset.

"This is a highly prejudiced approach with a clear intention to target a particular community. It is part of their communal agenda," Pinarayi said.

"On what basis has he made these statements? Was he in possession of any sensitive information that prompted him to make such a statement? This is a grave issue. People should not be misled. We will take this on legally," he added, according to online news outlet Onmanorama.

<h2>CM slams BJP</h2>

Attacking other BJP leaders who also responded on similar lines, he said those who were with the minister also came out with similar statements.

"A person who holds the post of minister should have shown at least some respect to the investigating agencies. Though the Kerala police is probing the incident now, we all saw reports that central agencies have also reached the site," the CM said.

<h2>Suspect surrenders</h2>

The series of blasts happened at an international convention centre in Kalamassery, where at least 2,500 believes of the minority Christian group Jehovah's Witnesses had congregated on the concluding day of a three-day-long prayer meeting.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu slammed the video terming it as "cruel psychological propaganda".

In hostage video released by Hamas, women slam Netanyahu, PM calls it ‘cruel propaganda’

A German-born Israeli woman who was captured by Hamas terrorists and paraded on the streets following the October 7 attacks was found dead, the Israeli government announced on Monday (Oct 30).

Shani Louk, 23, was captured from the Supernova music festival in southern Israel near the Gaza border—from where the militant organisation launched their all-front attack.

The victim’s mother Ricarda Louk told the German media that she was informed of Shani’s death by the Israeli military, who had taken a DNA sample from part of a skull bone. Her body is yet to be found.

However, it is not clear from the reports where or how the fragment of her skull was discovered.

Later, Israeli President Isaac Herzog&nbsp;told the German newspaper Bild that she was in fact "beheaded" by the terrorists.

"I am truly sorry to report that we have now received news that Shani Nicole Louk has been confirmed murdered and dead," Herzog&nbsp;was quoted as saying.

“Her skull was found. This means that these barbaric, sadistic animals simply chopped off her head as they attacked, tortured and killed Israelis," he added.&nbsp;

<h2>Hamas horrors&nbsp;</h2>

Shani’s sister Adi later took to the social media platform Instagram to share the news of her sister’s death.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the death of my sister," she said.

German newspaper Bild reported that Israeli President Isaac Herzog had also confirmed Louk's death.

More than 260 people were killed at the festival when gunmen opened fire, sending terrified partygoers to run for cover through the desert.

Hours after the attack, several clips began appearing on social media, showing the body of a young woman being paraded through the streets in the back of a truck, which was surrounded by armed fighters, while others yelled "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest).

Even though the woman was lying face down, Louk’s family were able to identify her from her dreadlocks and distinctive tattoos.

<h2>At least she didn't suffer</h2>

Initially, Lok’s mother argued that her daughter may be alive, contrary to the speculations floating around her death.

"We were sent a video in which I could clearly see our daughter unconscious in the car with the Palestinians and them driving around the Gaza Strip," Ricarda Louk said in an appeal for information posted online.

According to reports, the Biden administration said that it would halt supplying arms to the country if they are used by civilians, or seen being distributed at political events.

The US government also threatened to halt an order of some 20,000 rifles purchased by the National Security Ministry from American suppliers.

“President [Joe] Biden directed his team to ensure Israel has what it needs to defend itself, consistent with international law, and we are actively providing additional security assistance to the&nbsp;Israeli Defence Forces,” a state department spokesperson was quoted as saying by the Telegraph on Sunday (Oct 29).

“Our assistance will flow quickly to meet Israel’s urgent needs,” he added

Israel has been reportedly arming volunteer security squads in view of possible unrest in Palestinian communities ever since the war with Hamas began.

<h2>US halts arms sales to other countries, except Ukraine and Israel</h2>

Notably, it comes just days after US Commerce Department suspended sales of most US-made firearms for 90 days to ensure it doesn’t “undermine the country’s interests”.

However, it made exceptions to Israel and Ukraine—who are both currently engaged in a bloody war with Hamas and Russia, respectively—and about 40 other countries that are part of an export-control agreement.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Bangladesh’s main opposition leader, was charged with murder on Sunday (Oct 29) and sent to jail, amidst concerns over a crackdown on dissent by the ruling Sheikh Hasina government ahead of the general elections.

Along with Alamgir, at least 154 members of his Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) were accused of murdering a police officer during the anti-government protests.

"At least 164 Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir were accused of murdering the police officer," police officer Salahuddin Mia told AFP news agency on Sunday.

Among the arrested are the senior echelons of the BNP leadership, who potentially face the death penalty if they are found guilty.

Earlier, he was brought before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's court, during which an investigating officer requested he be kept in jail for the sake of investigation, while his lawyer applied for bail.

After hearing both sides, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shafi Uddin turned down the bail plea and granted the police's request.

The development comes hours after Alamgir was detained for interrogation for Saturday’s violence

Dhaka police commissioner Habibur Rahman had earlier said Alamgir had been "detained for interrogation" for &nbsp;Saturday's violence in which a police officer and a protester were killed, and at least 26 police ambulances were torched or damaged.

Police on Saturday said the officer had been hacked to death and accused BNP activists of the killing.

The anti-government protests have been going on for the past few weeks after Prime Minister Hasina put the party’s ailing leader and two-time former premier Khaleda Zia under house arrest and refused to give her permission to leave Bangladesh on medical grounds.

Zia was arrested and jailed, and her son went into exile in Britain, following corruption charges.
