A man was arrested on Wednesday (Oct 25) from India’s southern Chennai city after he hurled a crude bomb outside the Tamil Nadu state governor’s residence.

The man, identified as Karukka Vinod, was soon subdued outside the main gate by a hoard of security personnel manning the official residence of Governor RN Ravi.

According to reports, he was anguished by the governor’s decision not to sign the anti-NEET Bill approved by the Tamil Nadu assembly several months ago.

The bill seeks to dispense with the NEET entrance examinations conducted for medical courses and allow admission based on Class 12 marks.

Police said that upon reaching the main gate of Raj Bhavan, he pulled out a Molotov cocktail — colloquially referred as petrol bombs — lit it, and threw it at the entrance.

While attempting to escape, he was nabbed by the police following a brief chase.

Chinese Shin Yan 6—which India claims it to be a spy vessel—arrived at the Port of Colombo on Wednesday (Oct 25).&nbsp;A spokesperson from the Sri Lanka foreign ministry told AFP news agency that the vessel had been authorised to dock in the city, where a Chinese state-owned company operates a deep-sea container terminal.

However, India believes that the research ship is actually a spy vessel in disguise meant to snoop on Indian military assets based in the southern region bordering Sri Lanka and Andaman and Nicobar islands, which serves as the base for the Indian Air Force and the Navy.

Earlier, the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA)—the apex institute charged with responsibility for carrying out research—said that the China’s Shi Yan 6 will be reaching Sri Lanka as per an agreement reached with the University of Ruhuna.

Later, the University of Ruhuna announced that it has decided to step away from the research program that was to take place with the Chinese scientific research vessel.

As many as 14 children reportedly got infected with Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV after undergoing blood transfusion in India’s northern Uttar Pradesh state.

According to the Hindustan Times newspaper, these kids have thalassemia, an inherited blood disorder that results in abnormal haemoglobin levels.

The report, citing doctors, stated on Monday (Oct 23)&nbsp;that the children could have been infected with various diseases while receiving transfusions at private and district hospitals, and in some cases locally, during urgent cases.

The infections were revealed during a test conducted at Kanpur’s government-run Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital. Currently,&nbsp;180 thalassemia patients receive blood transfusion at the centre, which screens each of them every six months for any viral diseases.&nbsp;

<h2>Kids at major risk&nbsp;</h2>

Speaking to Hindustan Times newspaper, Arun Arya, the head of the paediatrics department at the Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital in Kanpur, said that seven of these children tested positive for Hepatitis B, five for Hepatitis C and two for HIV. The infected children are aged between 6 and 16.

While it is difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of the infection, Arya said that the blood transfusion may have taken place during the so-called “window period”.

According to him, when someone donates blood, it is tested to make sure it is safe for transfusion. However, there is a period of time after someone was infected when the virus could not be detected by the tests, this time span is called “window period”.

This means that during the window period, someone can be very infectious but still test negative for HIV or Hepatitis.&nbsp;Different types of tests have different window periods.

“At the time of transfusion, the doctors should have [also] vaccinated the children against Hepatitis B,” Arya was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, a senior unnamed official of the Uttar Pradesh National Health told the newspaper that they are tracing the root of the infection.

“District-level officials will trace the root of infection under the Viral Hepatitis Control Programme. The team will look for the place of infection, both for hepatitis and HIV,” the official said.

A nominee needs to get 217 votes on the House floor to become the Speaker, which has of late become difficult. There are 221 Republicans in the House, and conservative and moderate factions are divided over who should be the leader.

But it seems that Emmer has his task cut out as some of the Republicans have expressed problems with him.

Republican Jim Banks, who had voted no for Emmer, said that he wouldn't be able to support "one of the most moderate members" of the caucus.

“I can’t go along with putting one of the most moderate members of the entire Republican conference in the Speaker’s chair," he said.

"I hope there’s a change along the way. He doesn’t have the support in the room right now. So, dozens of members that won’t vote for him at this point," Banks added, describing the meeting as "a heated discussion."

<h2>Many Republicans not happy with Emmer's bid&nbsp;</h2>

Not only Banks, there are at least 26 GOP members who voted against Emmer’s bid during the secret voting, CNN reported.

Democrat member Jim McGovern said he and other Democrats will need to see changes in how the House operates to facilitate Tom Emmer’s speakership bid.

“I am proud to be part of Team Normal. But they’re Team Out Of Their F---ing Minds. And I’ve never seen anything like this before,” McGovern said.

“It’s embarrassing for this country, and they should all be ashamed of themselves.”

Online gaming companies operating in India have been asked to pay around 1 trillion rupees ($12.03 billion) in taxes they have allegedly evaded, news agency PTI reported citing a senior tax official.

The government imposed 28 per cent GST on online gaming companies in August on the full value of bets placed on online gaming platforms.

These include foreign companies as well who have bases in India.&nbsp;The GST law was amended, making it mandatory for overseas online gaming companies to register in India from October 1.

However, the government official said that there is no data yet of foreign gaming companies registering in India since October 1.

“Online gaming companies served notices worth about Rs 1 trillion rupees by GST authorities so far,” the official told the news agency.

The move comes a month after several online gaming firms like Dream11, and casino operator, like Delta Corp, received show cause notices for alleged short payment of taxes.

Separately, a show cause notice was sent to GamesKraft in September last year for alleged GST evasion of 210 billion rupees ($2.5 billion).

<h2>Tussle between firms and government</h2>

The online gaming sector was considered the sunrise sector in India in the wake of the exponential growth recorded by the industry during the pandemic.

Earlier, the gaming firms used to 18 per cent tax on the platform fees because the law was ambiguous, while betting and gambling always fell under the 28 per cent slab.

But in August, the GST Council announced the decision to amend the indirect tax law to clarify that all online games involving wagers, irrespective of whether they are based on skill or chance, will attract a GST of 28 percent on the full value of the bets placed –not on the gross gaming revenue – from October 1.

The provision under the GST law on taxing betting and gambling was invoked because the governments, both the state and central, wanted to regulate online real money gaming.

Reports are coming in that US aircraft carriers in the West Asian region are being targetted in drone attacks by Iran proxies. While so far it has managed to thwart these attacks, there's increasing worry that a major attack could drag the US further into the Israel-Hamas war, the same way the Pearl Harbour attack led America to join World War II.

Brigadier General Patrick Ryder, the Pentagon spokesman, told reporters on Oct 19 that USS Carney, a navy destroyer deployed to West Asia (Middle East) was targeted by drones and missiles in the northern Red Sea.

“We cannot say for certain what these missiles and drones were targeting, but they were launched from Yemen heading north along the Red Sea, potentially towards targets in Israel,” Ryder said, adding that he wasn’t sure whether the attacks targeted the US Navy ship.

He blamed the pro-Iranian Houthi rebels in Yemen for launching a flurry of missiles and drones.&nbsp;However, this was not an isolated incident.

<h2>US military under attack in Middle East</h2>

Over the past week, American troops stationed in other parts of the Middle East—Iraq and Syria—have come under attacks. &nbsp;There are about 2,500 US troops in Iraq.

Ain al-Asad airbase, which hosts US and other international forces in western&nbsp;Iraq, was targeted by drones and missiles on October 19 evening. Multiple blasts were reportedly heard inside the base.

The attack came after rockets hit another military base hosting US forces near Baghdad’s international airport on Thursday, Iraqi police said.

A day before on Wednesday, US forces in Iraq were targeted in two separate drone attacks, with one causing minor injuries to a small number of troops even though the US military managed to intercept the armed drone.

At the same time, a drone hit US forces in&nbsp;Syria, resulting in minor injuries, while another one was brought down.

The spate of attacks on US military in the Middle East comes amidst the&nbsp;<a name="_Hlk149076403">Israel-Hamas war </a>that has divided the Western nations and the Gulf.

Hence, US’ decision to send weapons, especially the THAAD&nbsp; system, to Israel is believed to be part of a wider plan to bolster firepower in the region if Iran or its proxies intervene in the battle against Hamas and Hezbollah.

Hundreds of people were killed when militants opened fire on the festival-goers, with many taken hostage in Gaza.

But what riled up many was when von Burgsdorff in a recent radio interview, criticised Israel for what he said was an "unjustified" attack on Gaza in response to the Hamas attack. The remarks prompted netizens to dig out his old video to claim that his&nbsp;recreational stunt inspired Hamas to launch the terrorist attack.&nbsp;

<h2>Envoy slams Israel&nbsp;</h2>

“It cannot be that Israel has carte blanche because terrible acts, cruel and shocking acts happened to 1,000 or even 1,200 Israelis,” von Burgsdorff said during a recent radio interview.

“This is not the excuse you can use to flatten Gaza,” he added, the New York Post reported.

“It cannot be that Israel is threatening to bomb corridors and shipments carrying humanitarian equipment. It cannot be. It is another war crime if it happens,” he said.

The remarks were criticised by Israel’s foreign ministry calling the show “provocative” propaganda that only served to bolster Hamas.

“The European diplomat forgot a long time ago that he represents the European Union and its member states,” the ministry said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas as an existential battle against the “forces of darkness".

He equated the fight against Hamas to a struggle between the “forces of light” representing humanity and the “forces of darkness” embodying animalism, The Times of Israel reported. He emphasised that the main objective was to secure victory over Hamas.
