Following the verdict, one of the petitioners, Aitzaz Ahsan, spoke to the media and termed the order “very important”, adding that it would also strengthen democracy, the constitution and the justice system”, reports Dawn newspaper.

“We were against military courts and we endeavoured against it. The verdict has shown that giving relief is the prerogative of the SC,” he was quoted as saying.

He also alleged that trials had begun even though the government had stated that this would not happen until the apex court was informed.

“The government informed the SC but after the commencement of the trial. The government was supposed to inform before trials [began],” he said.

<h2>The May 9 riots</h2>

The riots were triggered by the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan by paramilitary Rangers on the premises of Islamabad High Court in a corruption case.

These suspects were arrested following the violence on May 9 during which civilian and military installations were specifically targeted.

Around 102 persons were detained for their involvement in the attacks on military establishments, including the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, corps commander’s residence in Lahore, PAF Base Mianwali, and an office of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in Faisalabad.

More than 100 vehicles of police and other security agencies were set on fire.

In response, the law enforcement agencies cracked down hard on Imran Khan’s supporters from his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and arrested over 10,000 members across Pakistan, of which 4,000 of them were from Punjab province only.

The PTI, however, continued to claim that its members were not involved in the attacks, but the government and military rejected it saying they have "irrefutable evidence" of their involvement.

22-year-old poses as mannequin to steal at jewellery store, arrested

The 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, whose death sparked nationwide anti-regime protests in Iran has been posthumously awarded with European Union’s top human rights prize.

Amini had died in police custody after she was detained for violating the headscarf rule, which is religiously enforced in Iran.

Both Amini, and the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement, which spawned after her death, were honoured with the Sakharov Prize.

The annual Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought recognises human rights activists and dissidents.

"The brutal murder of 22-year-old Jina Mahsa Amini marked a turning point. It has triggered a women-led movement that is making history," European Parliament speaker Roberta Metsola said, using Mahsa Amini's Kurdish first name as she announced the award.

She said that the movement's three-word slogan was "a rallying cry for all those standing up for equality, for dignity, and for freedom in Iran".

"The world has heard the chants of 'Women, Life, Liberty'. Three words that have become a rallying cry for all those standing up for equality, for dignity and for freedom in Iran," Roberta Metsola said.

"We stand with those who, even from prison, continue to keep Women, Life and Freedom alive."

Amini and the Iranian "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement join the distinguished list of previous winners that includes Pakistani campaigner Malala Yousafzai and South Africa's Nelson Mandela.

<h2>Amini died on Sept 16</h2>

The award comes with a $53,000&nbsp;endowment, which will be presented in a European Parliament ceremony in December.

Last year, the Sakharov Prize, which is given annually in memory of Soviet scientist and dissident Andrei Sakharov, was awarded to the Ukrainian people for "protecting democracy, freedom and rule of law", following Russia's&nbsp;invasion of their country.

The Russian parliament on Wednesday (Oct 18) passed a law that revokes Russia’s ratification of the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).

The lawmakers of Parliament’s lower house, the Russian State Duma, unanimously voted 415 votes to zero to annul the treaty at a plenary session in Moscow.

The move follows the request made by President Vladimir Putin on October 5 to make efforts to "mirror" the stance of the United States, which has signed but never ratified the 1996 agreement.

"We understand our responsibility to our citizens, we are protecting our country. What is happening in the world today is the exclusive fault of the United States," parliament speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said.

<h2>Putin wants to mirror US' stance&nbsp;</h2>

The bill was introduced on Tuesday, with parliament speaker Volodin hinting that Moscow might withdraw from the treaty altogether, adding that it would keep Washington guessing about its intentions.

"And what we will do next - whether we remain a party to the treaty or not, we will not tell them. We must think about global security, the safety of our citizens and act in their interests," he said.

The law will now go to the upper house, and then to Putin for his nod.

Russia has said that it will remain a signatory to the CTBT, signed in 2000, and continue to supply data to the global monitoring system which alerts the world to any nuclear test.

A team of scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have found a significant amount of space debris littered in the second layer of the atmosphere.

They found traces of aluminum, lithium, copper, and lead embedded in about 10 per cent of the particles that make up the majority of the stratosphere.

<h2>Rockets and satellites polluting atmosphere</h2>

The team said that they came from rockets and satellites re-entering Earth's atmosphere.

This happens when the debris of rockets and satellites, upon re-entering the planet’s atmosphere, burn up and as a consequence, leave traces of metal vapour.

They warn that the rate of metal vapour is expected to rise in the years to come as countries race to dominate the space exploration market.

"There are so many rockets&nbsp;going up and coming back&nbsp;and so many satellites&nbsp;falling back through the atmosphere&nbsp;that it's starting to show up in the stratosphere as these aerosol particles," Dan Cziczo, one of the scientists behind a new study detailing the team's findings, said in a&nbsp;statement from Purdue University.

The stratosphere is the second layer of Earth’s atmosphere. It contains the ozone layer which protects the planet from the harmful ultraviolet rays emitted from the Sun.

Scientists believe that the presence of metal aerosols is changing the stratosphere's chemistry. But they are unable to determine how is it changing.

"What this research shows us is that the impact of human occupation and human spaceflight on the planet may be significant — perhaps more significant than we have yet imagined," Cziczo said in the statement.

‘Siege from every side’: Iranian state TV shows how multi-front attack against Israel can unfold

A US State Department official tendered his resignation over the Biden administration’s decision to boost military aid to Israel which is currently fighting Hamas in the besieged Gaza City.

Josh Paul, a director in the State Department’s Bureau of Political-Military Affairs which handles arms transfers, in his dissent note published online on Wednesday (Oct 18) called the administration’s response “an impulsive reaction” based on “intellectual bankruptcy.”

“The response Israel is taking, and with it the American support both for that response and for the status quo of the occupation, will only lead to more and deeper suffering for both the Israeli and the Palestinian people,” he wrote.

“I fear we are repeating the same mistakes we have made these past decades, and I decline to be a part of it for longer,” he said.

Paul’s note of dissent marks a rare display of internal conflict over Biden’s foreign policy which has openly sided with Israel and endorsed its retaliatory attacks on Gaza in its pursuit of wiping out Hamas.

While not official yet, US media reported that the Biden administration is earmarking at least $40 billion of military aid to Israel.

<h2>‘US blindly supporting one side’</h2>

He further said that Washington’s “blind support for one side” was leading to policy decisions that were “shortsighted, destructive, unjust and contradictory to the very values we publicly espouse”.

Paul equally condemned Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel as “a monstrosity of monstrosities”, but also pointed out that Israeli&nbsp;military’s response “will only lead to more and deeper suffering for both the Israeli and the Palestinian people – and is not in the long term American interest”.

The official, who spent more than 11 years in his role, claimed that the US sending military aid to Israel will give the country a free hand to run amok in Gaza, regardless of the civilian toll.

<h2>Biden calls for calm</h2>

It comes hours after US President Joe Biden, in his visit to Tel Aviv, appealed for calm and asked Israelis to not “repeat the mistakes the US made post 9/11”.

Meanwhile, the toll in the Israel-Hamas war continued to grow on Thursday with at least&nbsp;3,785 Palestinians losing their lives in the Israeli retaliatory attacks, the&nbsp;Palestinian health ministry said.&nbsp;
