For the first time, Israel used its Arrow 3 "missile-killer ", which is part of its ‘Star Wars’ missile killer system, while downing a rocket allegedly fired by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.

The confirmation came from the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) on Monday (Oct 31), saying that the missile was used to “thwart an aerial threat in the area of the Red Sea.”

The IDF added that the “surface-to-surface missile" was fired toward Israel but was intercepted before it could reach its target.

The lethal long-range air defence system is able to intercept ballistic missiles from thousands of miles away and blast them out of the sky.

“All the threats were intercepted outside the territory of the State of Israel. No intrusion into Israeli territory was detected,” the IDF added.

Following Israel's announcement, the Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for the aerial assault and claimed to have fired "a large number" of ballistic missiles and drones at Israel on Monday.

In a video statement, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed it was the third attack they had launched at Israel and vowed there would be more to come.

<h2>What is Arrow 3 'missile-killer'?</h2>

It is a lethal long-range air defence system which has the capacity to intercept ballistic missiles at altitudes of over 100 km (62 miles), and in greater ranges.

Arrow 3 is part of Israel’s Arrow weapon system (AWS), a stand-alone anti-tactical ballistic missile defence system.

It is a key part of the country’s multi-layered defence missile array, which also includes the Arrow 2, David’s Sling, and the Iron Dome active defence systems, and was inducted into the Israeli Air Force in 2017.

The missile was jointly developed Israel Aerospace Industries and Missile Defence Agency in the US.

After IDF confirmed its usage, the Israel Aerospace Industries praised the IDF for the successful interception.

Reportedly, they also shouted slogans such as “We are against Jewish refugees,” and “There is no place for child-killers in Dagestan.”

The airport was temporarily closed and flights were diverted, a statement from the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency said.

Authorities said at least 20 people were injured and 60 people were detained. Many Jewish leaders condemned the incident, likening the incident to Tsar-era pogroms.

On Tuesday, a prominent rabbi in Russia, Boruch Gorin, slammed the Russian authorities over the antisemetic riots calling the incident an “eternal disgrace.”

<h2>Israel warns citizens to leave&nbsp;</h2>

The order from the court comes a day after an emergency meeting held between President Vladimir Putin and top security officials over the security situation in Dagestan.

Later in a speech on TV, Putin blamed the Western agents for the riots, saying, “The events in Makhachkala last night were instigated through social networks, not least from Ukraine, by the hands of agents of Western special services.”

15 anti-Israel protesters jailed over riots at Russian airport

Former senior advisors of UK’s then prime minister Boris Johnson have slammed the leader over mishandling of the Covid crisis.

On Tuesday (Oct 31), both were summoned to testify against Johnson in the COVID-19 public inquiry that was set up to examine the government’s response to the pandemic.

The inquiry, which is chaired by retired senior judge Heather Hallett, is examining decision-making and political governance. In the first phase, it focused on the UK's resilience and preparedness.

Dominic Cummings, Johnson's ex-top aide, and Lee Cain, Downing Street's former communications chief, were critical of Johnson’s attitude when the country was facing one of its worst crises, especially during mid-July 2021 when Britain officially recorded nearly 130,000 fatalities.

During the hearing, Cummings was shown a host of disparaging WhatsApp messages in which he called his former colleagues “useless f***pigs, morons and c***s”, reports Independent.

<h2>Johnson was called a trolley&nbsp;</h2>

Cummings also reiterated past descriptions of Johnson as a broken shopping "trolley" that would veer in all directions on issues, most notably Covid.

"Pretty much everyone called him a trolley," Cummings told the inquiry.

The former top aide candidly admitted that the government’s response during the pandemic featured "widespread failure" alongside "pockets of excellent teams doing excellent work within an overall dysfunctional system".

Former communications chief Cain said that Covid was the "wrong crisis" for Johnson's skill set, admitting that he became "exhausted" by his alleged indecision in dealing with the pandemic in early 2020.

"He's somebody who would often delay making decisions, would often seek counsel from multiple sources and change his mind on issues," Cain said.

When asked about expletive-filled messages from Cummings to Cain in early 2020 criticising Johnson's performance, the former communications chief acknowledged that the prime minister frustrated his senior aides.

"Anyone that's worked with the prime minister for a period of time will become exhausted with him sometimes," he said.

A tourist sparked a major bomb scare after he confused Portuguese words for pomegranate and grenade while ordering fruit juice from a restaurant in Lisbon city.

According to the Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã, the 36-year-old Russian speaker from Azerbaijan was using a translation app that erroneously gave out the wrong word for pomegranate.

When he showed the wrong translated word while ordering, the waiter thought that he was carrying a grenade and threatening to blow up the place, following which the police were called in.

The man, whose name has not been revealed, soon found himself surrounded by a group of armed police.

Five police officers then immobilised him, cuffed his hands, and escorted him to a police station for interrogation, the newspaper reported.

A video that went viral online purportedly shows the man being forced to lie face down on the ground before five officers approach him and handcuffed him.

According to police, the man was arrested as he tried to leave the premises when a “thorough inspection of the premises” was being carried out.

The Lisbon police also contacted Portugal’s anti-terrorism coordination unit to find if the person has&nbsp;any past criminal cases, but nothing emerged.

The tourist was later released after police did not find any explosives or weapons from him. His hotel room was also searched.

The confusion seems to have stemmed from the similarity between the words pomegranate and grenade in Russian, which are&nbsp;“granat” and “granata”, respectively.&nbsp;

It has been actively engaging with all the stakeholders in the conflict, holding meetings and working out a peaceful resolution, and silently pitching itself to be the peacemaker of the Gulf&nbsp;region.

This week, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi met officials in Washington to discuss the conflict amidst fears that it might turn into a major escalation. The US also pledged it would work with China in trying to find a resolution.

Later, Wang held discussions with his Israeli and Palestinian counterparts after China's Middle East special envoy Zhai Jun flew to the region to meet Arab leaders.

Tehran on its part also said that it is “ready to strengthen communication with China" on resolving the situation in Gaza.

According to the Financial Times, US officials urged Wangi Yi to use China’s close relations with Iran, which backs Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, and work towards a peaceful resolution.

<h2>China's interests in region is rooted in economics&nbsp;</h2>

Experts argue that there are two primary reasons why China wants to play peacemaker in the conflict-torn region.

One reason is its economic interests in the Middle East, which could be endangered if the conflict widens.

China is heavily dependent on foreign imports for oil, and at the same time, it pegs Arab nations to be the key pillars of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the lynchpin of its foreign and economic policy.

Another reason is that the conflict provides a golden opportunity for Beijing to burnish its reputation.

China believes that "standing up for the Palestinians resonates with Arab countries, Muslim-majority countries and large portions of the Global South", Dawn Murphy, an associate professor who studies Chinese foreign policy at the National War College under the US Department of Defence, told BBC.

She says that China seeks positive relations with the Palestinians, Arabs, Turkey and Iran, adding, "Together with the US which has good relations with Israel, they could bring all of the players to the table."

"China is not a serious actor on this issue. Talking to people around the region, nobody expects China to contribute to the solution," Jonathan Fulton, a non-resident senior fellow with the Atlantic Council who specialises in China's relations with the Middle East, told BBC.

What's at stake for China in the Israel-Hamas war?

More than 50 people were reported killed after Israeli forces allegedly bombed a refugee camp in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, the health ministry claimed on Tuesday.

"More than 50 martyrs and around 150 wounded and dozens under the rubble, in a heinous Israeli massacre that targeted a large area of homes in Jabalia camp in the northern (Gaza) Strip," a ministry statement said.

According to AFP, at least 47 bodies have been recovered at the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza.

The ministry said the blast was caused by an Israeli air strike.

At least 50 killed in Israeli bombing of Gaza refugee camp

A Jammu and Kashmir Police officer was shot dead outside his home in Baramulla district by terrorists on Tuesday (Oct 31), making it the third targeted attack in three days.

Head Constable Ghulam Mohammad Dar was killed outside his residence at Kralpora village in Pattan area of the district, PTI news agency reported citing the officials.

Dar succumbed to his injuries as the doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The police have cordoned off the village and a combing operation has been launched to track down the attackers, an official said.

Notably, it comes a day after a migrant worker from Uttar Pradesh was shot dead in Pulwama district on Monday (Oct 30), a day after a police officer was critically injured in firing by terrorists in Srinagar.

<h2>Third targeted attack in three days&nbsp;&nbsp;</h2>

The cop, Masroor Ahmad, was shot at from a point-blank range. As per the police sources, Ahmad was posted in District Police Line at Eidgah area of Srinagar.

Defending the tenets of the electoral bond scheme, the Indian government told the Supreme Court that the citizens “don’t have the right to know” the sources of the funding of the political parties.

Responding to the pleas challenging the scheme, the federal government’s counsellor R Venkataramani, in a statement filed before the court on Monday (Oct 30), said that the scheme extends the benefit of confidentiality to the contributor.

"Firstly, there can be no general right to know anything and everything without being subjected to reasonable restrictions. Secondly, the right to know as necessary for expression can be for specific ends or purposes and not otherwise," he said, according to LiveLaw outlet.

<h2>Right to know cannot be extended to learn about fundings&nbsp;</h2>

He argued that the judgments upholding the citizens’ right to know of the criminal history of party candidates cannot extend&nbsp;to having the right to information regarding the funding of parties.

"Right to know for specific rightful expression was thus conceived. From that, it cannot be said that the right to know for general or broad ends necessarily follows.”

“Therefore, these judgments cannot be read as to suggest that a citizen has a right to information under Art. 19(1)(a) regarding funding of political party. If there is no right under Article 19(1)(a), the further question of locating reasonable restriction under Article 19(2) does not arise.”

The batch of pleas had challenged the amendments introduced by the Finance Act, 2017, paving the way for the electoral bonds scheme that hides the identity and other details of donors.

The government said that there can be no general right to know anything and everything without being subjected to reasonable restrictions.

Citizens don’t have right to know sources of political parties' fundings: Indian govt to Supreme Court

Jewish students at Cornell University received anti-Semitic death threats online over the weekend, prompting the staff to send police to guard them.

According to the president of the university, Martha E Pollack, several hate messages were posted on a website not affiliated with the university on Sunday, encouraging many to harm Jews in the school.

“A series of horrendous, antisemitic messages threatening violence to our Jewish community and specifically naming 104 West— the home of the Center for Jewish Living — was posted on a website unaffiliated with Cornell,” Pollack said in a statement.

The messages, which have now been deleted, included threats to shoot Jewish students at the 104 West building, which houses their kosher dining hall, the school’s student newspaper, The Cornell Daily Sun, reported.

Though the campus authorities didn’t initiate any lockdown procedures or close down the dining hall, Cornell Hillel, a Jewish campus organisation, called on the students and staff to avoid the building “in an abundance of caution.”

<h2>Online posts called for killing Jews</h2>

The threats come in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war which has fuelled tensions on college campuses across the US.

Many institutions such as Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania saw students protesting and calling for a ceasefire even as staff grappled to tame the fervent agitation.

According to CNN, some instructions are also facing backlash from influential donors demanding colleges take a clearer stance on the conflict.

On Monday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul visited Cornell’s Center for Jewish Living where he vowed to ensure the safety of the Jewish community and hold the perpetrators accountable.

The Cornell University Police Department is also investigating and has notified the FBI.

AP news reported that a state police cruiser was parked in the street in front of the Center for Jewish Living and an SUV with campus security was in the driveway.
