He then outlined the agenda planned by Sunak for the new parliamentary session at the&nbsp;House of Lords, saying that his ministers would make the “difficult but necessary long-term decisions to change this country for the better".

“The impact of Covid and the war in Ukraine have created significant long-term challenges for the United Kingdom. That is why my government’s priority is to make the difficult but necessary long-term decisions to change this country for the better," King Charles said in prepared remarks.

The British monarch also talked about government initiatives to control inflation, bolster energy security and protect consumers from hidden prices, as he outlined what Sunak hopes will be vote-winning reforms for the Conservatives.

Tens of thousands of garment workers making clothes for UK brands in Bangladesh have been holding protests seeking a minimum wage.

For weeks, these workers have been on the streets fighting for their basic rights, as the protests&nbsp;turn increasingly violent over no response from the government.

They say that they have been scavenging and stealing food on the streets as the wage they are earning is unable to satiate their children’s hunger.

Around 4 million people in Bangladesh are employed in the garment sector. Despite being a major supplier, the South Asian country has one of the lowest minimum wages for garment workers in the world, which has remained stagnant at 8,000 taka ($72 approx.) since 2018.

Bangladeshi Ministry for Labour and Employment is proposing a new minimum wage of 12,500 taka ($113 approx.) a month.

<h2>Disagreement between govt and workers over wage&nbsp;</h2>

However, the workers' union says that this won’t be enough to cover their basic living costs, which has been aggravated by inflation and a cost-of-living crisis.

They demand 23,000 taka ($208) a month, and anything less than that, they say, would make their children starve to death.

“The leggings I make retail for more than my entire month’s salary,” a garment worker with young children who did not want to be named told The Guardian.

“To us, it is clear that there are huge profits being made on our backs. Even the 23,000 taka we are asking for wouldn’t be enough, but it would offer some kind of relief. Why should my children go hungry?”

The government says they are willing to re-negotiate after the proposal for 12,500 taka was rejected by the workers.

A new analysis done by Climate Trends, a Delhi-based research institute, has revealed that stubble burning—which largely takes place in the agricultural states of Punjab and Haryana—has actually seen a drop in the past two years.

It has indicated that Delhi’s meteorology might have played a major part in Delhi breathing toxic smog this year.

Using NASA Earth VIIRS data to count farm fires and wind and temperature profile data from CPCB reveal that there has been a 47.8 per cent reduction in farm fires in Punjab and a 38.04 per cent reduction in Haryana between 2022 and 2023 for the period Oct 1 to Nov 5.

Of this, Sangrur district has performed better in Punjab with 46 per cent reduction, from 4,287 fire counts in 2022 to only 2,295 fire counts in 2023.

<h2>Wind direction contributing to smog in Delhi?</h2>

Analysing the wind trajectory data reveals a strong correlation between the wind direction originating from Punjab and Haryana and the resulting pollution levels in Delhi, the study states.

The wind carries pollution from Punjab and Haryana to Delhi 81 per cent of the times, based on the wind trajectory for October 2023, the study notes.

"Air pollution in Delhi is again hovering in the severe to emergency category with AQI levels crossing 400. Our analysis shows that the delicate balance of wind speed, year-round air pollution, and seasonal stubble burning all have a role to play in creating this annual cocktail of noxious gases. 81% of the wind in Delhi these days is from Punjab and Haryana,” Aarti Khosla, Director, Climate Trends, said.

“While the farm fires data from Punjab and Haryana reveals a substantial reduction by 47.8% and 38.04% respectively, against data for October 2022, but since volume of wind from the region is so high, it brings the undesirable impact of heavy pollution,” she added.

The Iranian president told PM Modi that Tehran supports any joint global effort for an immediate ceasefire, lifting the blockade and providing relief to the oppressed people of Gaza.

Israel’s construction sector has reportedly urged Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to let them hire 100,000 Indian workers to replace 90,000 Palestinians who have lost their work permits amidst the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

Vice-president of Israel Builders' Association, Haim Feiglin told Voice of America (VOA) News that the Indian government has been informed in this regard and they are currently waiting for a decision from the Israeli government.

“We hope to engage some 50,000 to 100,000 workers from India to work across the sector and bring it to normalcy,” he said.

The construction sector has come to a standstill after Palestinians were not allowed to work in Israel following the brutal October 7 assault by Hamas terror group. The industry is currently operating at 15 per cent of its prewar capacity,

As a result of a shortage of workers, construction activity has slowed down in the country.

<h2>Israel revoked work permits of Palestinians&nbsp;</h2>

According to Feiglin, Palestinians account for 25 per cent of the workforce employed by the Israeli construction industry. Of which, around 10 per cent of the Palestinian workers are from Gaza, while the rest are from the West Bank.

According to Palestinian officials, more than 110,000 Palestinians held permits to work in Israel or Israeli settlements before Oct 7 attack. The majority of them were in the construction industry.

A close adviser to the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Army was killed on his birthday after a grenade that was placed amongst his birthday gifts exploded.

Initially, the incident was termed as an assassination until further details revealed that Major Gennadiy Chastiakov, 39, had received a box of grenades as a gift.

Some local reports claimed that a real grenade was placed amongst novelty gifts shaped to look like grenades.

Ukraine’s interior minister Igor Klymenko in a statement on Monday (Nov 6) said that Chastiakov was showing his gift to his son when the explosion took place.

“At first, the son took the munition in his hands and began to turn the ring. Then the serviceman took the grenade away from the child and pulled the ring, causing a tragic explosion,” Klymenko said.

<h2>Real grenade placed among novelty ones&nbsp;</h2>

His 13-year-old son was also seriously injured, Ukrainska Pravda newspaper reported citing the police, and added that Chastiakov’s wife saw her husband bringing the gift box, which had the real grenade, home.

Army Gen Valery Zaluzhny condoled Chastiakov’s death on Telegram.

“Under tragic circumstances, my assistant and close friend, Major Gennadiy Chastiakov, was killed … on his birthday,” Zaluzhny said, adding that an “unknown explosive device detonated in one of his gifts”.

Zaluzhny said that since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Chastiakov had been “fully devoting his life to the armed forces of Ukraine and the fight against Russian aggression”.

A fellow soldier has been detained by the police who gave the fatal gift to Chastiakov. Two similar grenades were seized from him. An investigation was underway.

Chastiakov is survived by a wife and four children.

According to local media reports, Chastiakov was a graduate of a military academy and fully trained in handling grenades.&nbsp;

Ukraine military chief's adviser killed as grenade among his birthday gifts explodes

For Marc Gauthier, everyday activities were a challenge. Having to endure Parkinson’s disease for nearly three decades, taking just a step forward seemed a bigger task for the 63-year-old Frenchman from Bordeaux as one could imagine.

But now he is able to walk for several kilometres without falling over and can perform everyday tasks like any other human being.

It’s all thanks to a special implant that stimulates nerves in his spine.

“Walking in a store would be really difficult, impossible before, because of the freezing of gait that would often happen in those environments. And now, it just doesn’t happen anymore. I don’t have freezing anymore,” Gauthier, who lives near Bordeaux, France, said in a news briefing, speaking in French that was translated to English.

Gauthier is the first person with advanced Parkinson’s to be fitted with experimental spinal cord neuroprosthesis to correct walking disorders.

Step by step, he said, it has helped him get his stride back.

The study, which details how the neuroprosthesis works by targeting specific areas of the spinal cord with electrical stimulation, was published on Monday in Nature Medicine journal.

“Addressing deficits of gait and balance in Parkinson’s disease is extremely challenging. These deficits can be very heterogenous. They can be variable across patients. They can affect walking but also symmetry, balance, posture,” Dr Eduardo Moraud, an author of the study and researcher at Lausanne University Hospital in Switzerland, said during the news briefing.

“The neuroprosthetic approach that we have developed here allows for the first time to target and address these problems individually in a highly specific manner for each patient,” Moraud said.

The device is wired to a small impulse generator with its own power supply, and implanted under the skin of Marc's abdomen.

After surgery to fit the device, Marc had weeks of rehabilitation to programme it, using feedback sensors on his legs and shoes.

Neurosurgeon Jocelyne Bloch, who implanted Marc's device&nbsp;around two years ago, said the technology and procedure were similar to that which had helped some spinal-injury patients for many years.

"It is impressive to see how by electrically stimulating the spinal cord in a targeted manner, in the same way as we have done with paraplegic patients, we can correct walking disorders caused by Parkinson's disease," she said, according to BBC.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday (Nov 7) reiterated that its earlier order banning the use of barium and prohibited chemicals in firecrackers are applicable across the country, and not just to Delhi and its adjoining areas.

The order comes days before the Diwali celebrations on November 12.

The clarification came while hearing a plea seeking direction to the Rajasthan government to comply with the top court’s order on the ban on barium crackers and minimising air and noise pollution.

“At this juncture, no specific order will be necessary in as much as this Court in the course of hearing the petitions has passed several orders, where steps have been indicated to minimise and avoid air as well as noise pollution. Hence the said orders will bind every state in the country, including the state of Rajasthan,” a bench of Justice A S Bopanna and Justice M M Sundresh said in its order, reports LiveLaw.

“Therefore, we make it clear that the state of Rajasthan would also take note of this and take all steps to minimise air and noise pollution, not only during the festival season but even thereafter" the bench stated.

<h2>'Celebrate Diwali, but with moderation'</h2>

Justice Sundresh said that celebrations must take place, but not at the cost of the environment.

“Celebrations can take place, but with some moderation. One can bring happiness to others with celebrations, but not at the cost of the environment,” Justice Sundresh said, according to the Hindu newspaper.

Justice Bopanna noted that adults, not children,&nbsp;tend to go overboard while bursting crackers galore, with no thought of the pollution and discomfort caused by them.

After a 24-hour manhunt, the police in Bengaluru city of southern Karnataka state on Monday (Nov 6) arrested a man in connection with the murder of a senior female government official.

The accused has been identified as 32-year-old Kiran, who used to work as her driver. He was sacked around 10 days ago. However, it is currently unknown why was he let go.

Victim Prathima KS, a 45-year-old Karnataka government officer, was found murdered inside her home by her brother on November 5. She was working as a geologist with Karnataka’s mines and geology department.

The police claimed that she was strangulated, and then her throat was slit. They also did not find any valuables being stolen from her home.

<h2>Kiran was sacked 10 days ago&nbsp;</h2>

“There was no forced entry to the house and no valuables have been missing. Someone known to her has entered the house and killed her,” a senior police officer was quoted as saying by&nbsp;The Indian Express.

She was living in an independent house. An initial probe revealed that she had returned home from work on Saturday evening.

At that time, Kiran arrived at Prathima’s residence to urge her to hire him back. But his pleas had no effect, following which he murdered the 45-year-old woman.

Kiran then fled to Chamarajanagar, which is around 200 km from Bengaluru, NDTV reported.

<h2>Kiran was having financial troubles&nbsp;</h2>

An officer&nbsp;close to the investigation told News18 that the driver had financial troubles, his wife was pregnant, and he was desperate to get his job back.

Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayanand told India Today, "One suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the Pratima murder case. The operation was led by DCP South (Bengaluru) and the accused was detained near the Male Mahadeshwara Hills. He (the accused) was working as a driver and he was removed from work probably 7 to 10 days back."
