<p>Jadhav belongs to the family of police officers and had set up a business of operating ferries from the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas. He was arrested by Pakistan in 2016 on suspicion of espionage, but India says he was kidnapped from Iran.</p>

<p>But a Pakistani military court went ahead and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/ahead-of-icj-verdict-a-look-at-how-pakistan-violated-international-law-in-kulbhushan-jadhav-case-236581">sentenced him to death</a> on charges of "espionage and terrorism" after a closed trial in April 2017. <p>As the September 1 deadline to conclude talks with Taliban close in, United States of America, China, Russia and Pakistan have come together to hammer out a peace deal with the Taliban. This new strategic alignment on Afghanistan is causing India a great deal of discomfort. Not only it leaves India out of the decision-making loop, United States-led talks have not even accommodated concerns expressed by the Indian authorities.</p>

<p>India, in past 18 years, gained immense goodwill in Afghanistan after investing in schools, dams, infrastructure projects and electoral process. Post-2001, the US-led invasion pushed Taliban out of Afghanistan and ensured take over of Kabul by northern alliance which subsequently established control over major parts of the country. Ironically, India's position of advantage was heavily compromised by the unilateral talks which the US undertook with the Taliban. Not only it discredited the functional government with which India has deep ties, it also left the present Kabul dispensation out of loop.</p>

<p>Americans want to exit Afghanistan quickly. It is for this reason that the US engaged Taliban despite continuous attack by them on the present government. US special envoy on Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, after conclusion of Doha talks with the Taliban, briefed both Russian and Chinese officials.</p>

<p>Subsequently, Pakistani officials were invited for talks in Beijing where all four countries released a statement on the conclusion of two-day meeting between four nations. The statement acknowledged importance of Pakistan in facilitating peace in Afghanistan. To top it all, former Afghanistan president Hamid Karzai who is supposed to have close ties with India became a facilitator of Taliban talks in both Beijing and Moscow.</p>

<p>India, however, has been insisting that elections in Afghanistan must be held on schedule. This demand of India has not cut much ice with Amercian counterparts who want the elections to be postponed so that peace talks can quickly conclude.</p>

<p>Today, India is neither on the table where political negotiation with Taliban is taking place, nor it has been able to impress big powers with its concerns. Pakistan, through the ban on its airspace, has cut India from Afghanistan, imposing economic costs and making a political point of its indispensibility. Critics back at home believe that what matters in the end, though, is not India's diplomatic presence at various peace initiatives, but New Delhi's quiet but sustained engagement with all Afghan political formations.</p>

US Coast Guard officer jumps onto moving submarine suspected of carrying drugs

<p>A Soviet nuclear submarine which sank off Norway in 1989 is still emitting radiation, researchers said on Wednesday following an expedition that used a remotely controlled vehicle for the first time.</p>

<p>The wreck of the Komsomolets lies on the bottom of the Norwegian Sea at a depth of about 1,700 metres (5,577 feet).</p>

<p>Authorities have conducted yearly expeditions to monitor radiation levels since the 1990s but this year's inspection was the first one to use a remotely operated vehicle called Aegir 6000 to film the wreckage and take samples which will be further analysed.</p>

<p>The scientific mission's samples show levels of radioactivity at the site up to 800,000 higher than normal, the Norwegian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority said in a statement.</p>

<p>"This is of course a higher level than we would usually measure out at sea but the levels we have found now are not alarming," said expedition leader Hilde Elise Heldal of the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research.</p>

<p>Radioactivity levels "thin out" quickly at these depths and there are few fish in the area, she said.</p>

<p>The Komsomolets sank on April 7, 1989, after a fire broke out on board, killing 42 crew.</p>

<p>On July 1, 14 Russian sailors were killed aboard a nuclear submarine operating in the Arctic.</p>

<p>Thwaites and the nearby Pine Island Glacier are two of the biggest and fastest-retreating glaciers in Antarctica.</p>

<p>If both abruptly collapsed, allowing ice far inland to flow faster into the oceans, world sea levels could rise by more than a metre (three feet), threatening cities from Shanghai to San Francisco and low-lying coastal regions.</p>

<p>Other scientists from South Korea, Germany, Sweden, New Zealand and Finland are also contributing in the project.</p>

<p>Hyundai has said that the car will have a range of 452 kilometre in a single charge, claiming that the running cost of the Kona will be one-fifth of the traditional (petrol and diesel) engines which are curently in use.</p>

<p>The car is powered by a 139.2 kWh advanced lithium-ion polymer battery which can be fully charged in just about an hour using a fast charger. At the launch, the company announced that it is two chargers to those who are willing to buy this car.</p>

<p>It delivers 134 bhp of power and offers four different driving modes - Eco, Eco+, Comfort and Sport.</p>

<p>India plans to achieve electric mobility by 2030 and taking the initial steps, the government cleared the second iteration of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid) and Electric Vehicles or FAME-II in February this year.</p>

<p>The main objective of the scheme is to encourage faster adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles by way of offering upfront incentive on purchase of electric vehicles and also by way of establishing necessary charging infrastructure for them.</p>

<p>In this year's Budget, Finance Ministr Nirmala Sitharaman sops to boost use of electric vehicles. She proposed an additional income tax deduction of Rs 1.5 lakh on interest paid on loans taken to purchase EVs and also asked the GST Council to reduce tax rate on EVs from 12 per cent to five per cent.</p>

<p>Customs duty on certain parts of EVs has also been reduced.</p>
