Major setback for KL Rahul-led Team India as star player tests positive ahead of SA ODIs

Two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar's life turned upside down when he was labelled as the prime accused for the death of young wrestler Sagar Dhankar in early May, 2021. Since then, the tainted wrestler has been behind the bars and the supplementary chargesheet, released by the Delhi Police, has recently revealed that the wrestler had fired at dogs and even assaulted fellow athletes hours before Sagar's death.

The alleged events occurred on May 5, as per the supplementary chargesheet filed by the Crime Branch at Rohini court last year against four men, relying on disclosure statements of Sushil’s security guard Anil Dhiman and other accused.

Dhiman -- in his statement to the cops --&nbsp;went onto claim that he was with Sushil on the unfortunate night of May 4-5, 2021. Back then, the wrestler had allegedly called several people to report to the basketball ground as he wanted to “teach a lesson to some people”.

On the other hand, co-accused Rahul claimed in his statement that he along with Sushil -- who was allegedly carrying a licensed pistol -- informed that after chasing away a third wrestler&nbsp;named Vikas (who asked Sushil the reason for his anger)&nbsp;the two-time Olympic medallist had even fired at a few dogs and said, “Where I go, who I meet, what I eat — all this information is being leaked by Sagar and Sonu Mahal.”

“At the stadium, we beat them a lot… we then visited a flat in Model Town where we abducted Sagar, Jaibhagwan, and Sonu and took them to the stadium,” Dhiman added.

According to the chargesheet, he quoted Sushil as saying, “Do not leave them alive. Beat them mercilessly.”&nbsp;

Meanwhile, co-accused Praveen quoted&nbsp;Sushil as saying, “I am the gunda of this area. How can you take over my flat?" Dhiman stated that they “assaulted them with lathi, danda, hockey stick and baseball bat. Our intention was to kill Sagar and Jaibhagwan as that was what Sushil wanted… He was scared that Sagar and Jaibhagwan were collecting information on him and wanted to cause him harm (to his life); that’s why Sushil wanted to kill them…"

World number one Novak Djokovic has made heads turn for all the wrong reasons of late. Ahead of the Australian Open, i.e. the first-ever Grand Slam of 2022, the Serbian has been caught in a huge spot of bother as he arrived in Melbourne last week with an exemption for Covid vaccination before the authorities, at the airport, tarnished his exemption, cancelled his visa and sent him to an immigration hotel.

Thus, this caused a huge uproar at a global level. On Monday (January 10), the court decision favoured Djokovic, who was immediately released from detention. His lawyers had pointed out that the Serb couldn't have taken the jab as he had tested positive for Covid-19 in December, 2021. At present, the 34-year-old is now practising for the Aus Open, though there is no clarity on his participation, however, the immigration minister can overrule the court's decision order his Serb's deportation; banning him from Australia for three years.

It is interesting to note that Djokovic had got the exemption, for vaccination, from the Victorian government; who has remained quiet since the unfortunate turn of events. Thus, this caused a huge uproar at a global level. On Monday (January 10), the court decision favoured Djokovic, who was immediately released from detention. His lawyers had pointed out that the Serb couldn't have taken the jab as he had tested positive for Covid-19 in December, 2021. At present, the 34-year-old is now practising for the Aus Open, though there is no clarity on his participation, however, the immigration minister can overrule the court's decision order his Serb's deportation; banning him from Australia for three years. It is interesting to note that Djokovic had got the exemption, for vaccination, from the Victorian government; who has remained quiet since the unfortunate turn of events. Thus, former Aussie spin wizard Shane Warne -- hailing from Victoria -- has joined the bandwagon and reacted to Djokovic's controversy. "Are these facts true? As I've read so many different reports in this messy embarrassing saga. Novak tested positive to covid Dec 16 & attended a public event on the 17th that inc (included) children. Said he hadn't travelled in 14 days before arriving in Oz but travelled Jan 2 to Spain?," tweeted Warne. "And did Novak have a medical exemption ? Virat Kohli-led India have locked horns with South Africa in the third and final Test at Newlands, Cape Town on Tuesday (January 11). With the series interestingly poised at 1-1, there's all to play for both sides in the deciding encounter. While India won the toss and opted to bat first, the onus fell on KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. The two openers have been in form and were involved in a century-stand on Day 1 of the series opener, in Centurion, but failed to score big in the first innings.

Rahul (12) and Mayank (15) made their way back with lowly returns. However, the two became the first Indian opening duo to register 200+ runs in Tests in South Africa.

Rahul and Mayank surpassed Virender Sehwag-Gautam Gambhir to top the list of Indian opening pairs who have got the most runs in the rainbow nation. Sehwag and Gambhir previously held the numero uno position, having accumulated 184 runs to their name. Meanwhile, Wasim Jaffer and Dinesh Karthik are placed on the third spot (153 runs).

Both Rahul and Mayank would have been gutted to miss out on scoring big after getting a start. The duo were involved in a 31-run opening stand before Duanne Olivier removed Rahul whereas Kagiso Rabada accounted for Mayank's scalp.

At the coin toss, Kohli told the broadcasters, "Runs on this venue have always worked out well. I am fit and fine. I come in for Vihari. Siraj misses out because of a niggle and Umesh comes in for him. Umesh has been very potent with the ball recently, very handy in the field and with the bat as well. It was a tough decision to choose between the two (Ishant and Umesh). We are expected to win every Test even when we play overseas and that fourth innings chase from South Africa was a special one from them. It is a beautiful stadium and we are very excited."

At lunch on Day 1 of the Cape Town Test, India are 75-2 in 28 overs.
