D Gukesh created history by winning the 2024 World Chess Championship, beating defending champion Ding Liren, of China, in Singapore. He beat Liren with a scoreline of 7.5-6.5, clinching the final classical game on Thursday (Dec 12). Post his success, reactions have been pouring in from all around for the 18-year-old sensation. Gukesh became the second Indian after legendary Viswanathan Anand to win the prestigious title and youngster overall, surpassing Russia's Garry Kasparov (who achieved the feat in 1985). After his win, his mother Padmakumari revealed she was in tears seeing her son's proud moment.

"I couldn't believe it and I cried for 10 minutes," Padmakumari told news agency PTI, before boarding a flight to meet her son. Padmakumari also shared the sacrifices the family made to support Gukesh's journey.

Gukesh's father, Rajnikanth, gave up a lucrative career as an ENT surgeon to accompany Gukesh to tournaments. The two hugged each other after Gukesh's big win over Liren. Talking about Padmakumari, a microbiologist, became the family's sole breadwinner after her husband stepped aside professionally.

Speaking about Gukesh, she added, "He worked incredibly hard from childhood. He's always been disciplined and made countless sacrifices for chess," she said. "We're so proud that his efforts have culminated in this historic win."

After Gukesh's success, his mentor and legend Anand took to his official handle on X and wrote, "Congratulations! Vinod Kambli and Sachin Tendulkar reunited during the memorial event for their late childhood coach Ramakant Achrekar recently. At the event, Kambli's health conditions made heads turn as he looked reasonably weak. His health became a huge talking point in the Indian cricket fraternity. In a recent interview, Kambli opened up on his health issues and backtracked from his previous claims of Tendulkar -- his childhood friend -- not helping him in troubled times. The former cricketer explained why he accused Tendulkar, in an interview in 2009, and credited Master Blaster for always being on his side, even paying for his surgeries.

In a recent interaction, Kambli revealed that he is battling a severe urinary infection and is determined to overcome his struggles. He lauded his family for their constant support and is 'grateful' for having a friend like Tendulkar. On the Vicky Lalwani Show, he said, "In that moment (recalling his 2009 remark of criticising Tendulkar), I felt Sachin wasn’t helping. I was deeply frustrated. But in reality, Sachin has done everything for me, including covering the costs of my two surgeries in 2013. We’ve reconciled, and our childhood bond has prevailed."

He further mentioned, "Sachin taught me the game. I have made nine comebacks in my career. As athletes, we face injuries and setbacks, but we understand the game’s reality. When we face a setback, it hurts just as much."

Kambli concluded, "My journey wasn't perfect, but I gave it my all. I'm grateful for the support of my family and friends like Sachin."

Kambli represented India in 17 Tests and 104 ODIs, spanning from 1991-2004. He ended with 1,084 runs in Tests and 2,477 ODI runs. While he had a dream start to his career, inconsistencies, controversies both on and off the field derailed his journey. Tendulkar, on the other hand, kept rising up the ladder and played for India from 1989-2013, ending with over 34,000 international runs and 100 hundreds overall.

Britain's Lawn Tennis Association has updated its rules to bar transgender women from competing in national and inter-club female competitions, the governing body said on Wednesday. The LTA said that while it was committed to making the sport welcoming and inclusive for everyone, it was responsible for ensuring fair competition. "It is clear that tennis and padel are gender-affected sports - the average man has an advantage when playing against the average woman," it said in a statement.

"This includes longer levers with which to reach and hit the ball and increased cardio-vascular capacity means being able to get around the court more easily.

"The current broad consensus, including the conclusion of the review carried out by the Sports Councils Equality Group, is that this advantage is likely to be retained to a significant degree in trans women, making competition potentially unfair."

The LTA said the revised policy will come into effect on Jan. 25 and would cover 'specified competitions' involving individuals from different clubs, venues or counties up to national level events. "This policy helps ensure there is a common national standard for all these competitions which is fair,' it said. International events such as Wimbledon, WTA tournaments held in Britain and International Tennis Federation (ITF) events are out of the scope of the LTA's rules.

Non-specified events within clubs, ranging from social play to club championships, will be able to be fully inclusive with venues able to determine their own policy.

The WTA Tour Gender Participation Policy currently permits transgender women to participate if they have declared their gender as female for a minimum of four years, have lowered testosterone levels and agree to testing procedures.

The first ODI was held in Durban, which saw the Heinrich Klaasen-led hosts win by 11 runs. While the hosts have some big names missing in their roster, yet they managed to get past a full-strength Pakistan team in the series opener. The first ODI was held in Durban, which saw the Heinrich Klaasen-led hosts win by 11 runs. While the hosts have some big names missing in their roster, yet they managed to get past a full-strength Pakistan team in the series opener. Klaseen & Co. will be eager to wrap up the series with an unassailable lead in the second T20I. Talking about the first T20I, Proteas opted to bat first and rode on David Miller's 40-ball 84, laced with 4 fours and 8 sixes, and George Linde's 24-ball 48 to post a competitive 183-9. At one stage, they were reeling at 28 for 3. In reply, Mohammad Rizwan-led Men in Green had no batter, except Saim Ayub (who scored a 15-ball 31), who showed urgency in the middle. An investigation into alleged rape and sexual assault in Stockholm which Swedish media said targeted Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has been closed due to insufficient evidence, the Swedish prosecutor said Thursday. The 25-year-old French star, one of the most high-profile players in world football, visited the Swedish capital on October 9-11 with a group of people after he was not selected by his country for a Nations League match.

Sweden's prosecution authority announced on October 15 that it was investigating an alleged incident that occurred at an upscale Stockholm hotel on October 10 without mentioning the suspect by name. Several Swedish media outlets, including newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen and public broadcaster SVT, identified Mbappe as the suspect. "My assessment is that the evidence is not sufficient to proceed and the investigation is therefore closed," prosecutor Marina Chirakova said in a statement that also did not mention Mbappe by name.

Chirakova said the suspect had "not been notified of suspicion of a crime". Mbappe's lawyer said in October that he was "shocked" to see his name linked to the investigation.

Speaking for the first time about the case on Sunday, he told French television show Clique he was "not involved". "I haven't received anything, no summons... I'm not involved," he said.

According to Aftonbladet, Mbappe and his entourage dined at a restaurant one evening before going to a nightclub. Aftonbladet said the complaint was filed on October 12 after the alleged victim had sought medical attention.

Expressen reported that police had seized some clothing as evidence, saying it consisted of women's underwear, a pair of black trousers and a black top. Photographs showed police officers leaving the hotel with brown bags. Mbappe has had a difficult season since moving to reigning European champions Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, failing to find his top form.

However, the Frenchman scored in Madrid's 3-2 win against Italian side Atalanta on Tuesday, which revived Real's flagging bid to regain their Champions League title.

Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, and Jude Bellingham were all on the scoresheet in Bergamo as Madrid moved up to 20th place in the Champions League table, on nine points from six matches.

The Spanish giants would have been at risk of dropping out of the Champions League play-off places if they had lost. Mbappe is one of the hottest properties in world football.

He won the World Cup as a teenager in 2018 in Russia and scored a hat-trick in the 2022 final in Qatar, which France lost on penalties to Lionel Messi's Argentina. At Paris Saint-Germain, he was part of a superstar trio with Messi and Brazilian forward Neymar.

Sweden ends rape inquiry allegedly targeting France star Kylian Mbappe

Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh claimed that he is up for the challenge of facing India pacer Jasprit Bumrah, 'best bowler in the world', ahead of the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in Brisbane, starting on Dec 14. Marsh believes the best way to tackle Bumrah is to apply pressure with your own method as he feels if one tries to see him off, then he is likely to be out by the wily speedster.

Speaking to the press before the third Test, Marsh said, "I think when you have the best bowler in the world and you are just trying to see him off he is going to have one with your name on it. I think it is about applying pressure with your own method and taking the challenge on. We know right now he’s probably the best bowler in the world. It’s just about getting up for that challenge. It’s a big series. You want to take the best in the world on. That is certainly my mentality. (I) look forward to facing him again."

Bumrah has been in top form in the ongoing series, leading the list of most wickets with 12 scalps after two Tests.

Notably, Marsh is the only top-order batter who hasn't been dismissed by Bumrah in the series so far. Marsh in this regard jokingly said, "He’s coming Everyone has their own plans and we all bat differently so (it’s about) the situation in the game.

"Sometimes you have to get through a spell and sometimes it is time to attack. We have guys in our batting lineup who just play differently. Getting through your own way and moving the game forward is really important when you are facing one of the best attacks in the world," he added.

The 2024/25 BGT edition is currently tied at 1-1 with India winning the series opener, in Perth, by 295 runs before Pat Cummins-led Australia came back strongly with a ten-wicket win in the pink-ball Test in Adelaide last week.

BGT: Mitchell Marsh reveals mantra to face 'best in the world' Jasprit Bumrah ahead of Brisbane Test

Former Indian opener-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar has backed Virat Kohli to overcome his issues outside the off-stump and score big in the third Test between India and Australia in Brisbane, starting on Dec 14. Kohli started the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) edition with an unbeaten 100 in the second innings of the first Test in Perth. He, however, flopped in the second Test in Adelaide. Kohli has scored a ton at each of Australia's five major Test venues except Brisbane, hence, Gavaskar has backed the star batter to achieve the feat in the third Test.

Talking on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, "If he scores a century in Brisbane, it will be great. It's an incentive as well as you know that you join a club if you score a century in Brisbane, the one to score a century everywhere in Australia. After that, going forward he will play in Melbourne and Sydney, where he has scored centuries. So he can score centuries there as well. It means he can score four centuries in the series."

The Perth Test ton was Kohli's seventh in Australia—most by any visiting batter Down Under (surpassing Sachin Tendulkar). If he scores a hundred in Brisbane, he will join Gavaskar and Alastair Cook in an elite club of visiting batters to have scored a century at each of Australia's five major Test venues.

Gavaskar further emphasised that a hundred in Brisbane could significantly boost Kohli's confidence, and he could go on a run-scoring spree in the remainder of the ongoing BGT edition.

The former Indian captain added, "Even Bradman never had a series where he scored in every Test match. You are bound to fail in an odd Test. I hope his failure in Adelaide will be offset by strong performances in the remaining three Tests. With the slight issue he’s having outside the off-stump—which every batter experiences at some point—if he plays cautiously to those deliveries, the runs will come."
