Manchester United scored two late goals on Sunday to deepen the pain for beleaguered Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola as Chelsea moved just two points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool. Elsewhere on a day of high drama in the English top flight, Wolves manager Gary O'Neil and Southampton boss Russell Martin were both sacked, paying the price for their teams' struggles.

In the marquee game of the day at the Etihad, City defender Josko Gvardiol opened the scoring but Bruno Fernandes levelled from the penalty spot in the 88th minute and Amad Diallo struck two minutes later to seal a 2-1 win. Defending champions City -- who have dominated English football over the past decade -- now have just one win in 11 games in all competitions and Guardiola is desperately searching for answers.

"I don't have a defence, I'm the boss, I'm the manager. I have to find a solution and I don't find a solution," said the Catalan after the low-quality encounter.&nbsp; "This is a big club, when you lose eight out of 11, something wrong is happening. What can I say? The schedule is tough, the injured players? No. "I'm the boss, I'm the manager and I'm not good enough. It's as simple as that."

Guardiola's men trail leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand, by nine points and sit outside the Champions League places, in fifth spot. Injury-ravaged City were far from their best at the Etihad but appeared to be on course for a vital win as the clock ticked down against their neighbours before they self-imploded.

Diallo and the Portuguese midfielder cut out Matheus Nunes' sloppy back pass then chopped down the United winger in his attempt to make amends. Fernandes coolly converted from the penalty spot to equalise. Diallo then raced onto a simple long ball over the top of City's flat-footed defence, finishing neatly to complete a remarkable turnaround.

The win is a huge relief for new United boss Ruben Amorim, who had won just one of his first four Premier League matches. "I think for the fans it has a deep meaning, especially in this context, in this moment," the former Sporting Lisbon boss said after his first experience of a Manchester derby. "We had a difficult moment one week ago against Nottingham (Forest) at home with a storm. It was a really tough moment after the game. Today, we are more happy, but it's three points that we have to continue."

United finished the day 13th in the Premier League table -- where they started -- after Tottenham hammered bottom club Southampton 5-0.

<h2>- Chelsea charge -</h2>

Enzo Maresca's high-flying Chelsea beat Brentford 2-1 at Stamford Bridge to close to within two points of long-time leaders Liverpool, who have 36 points. The home team dominated the first half and got the reward they deserved shortly before the break when Marc Cucurella nodded home Noni Madueke's cross.

Nicolas Jackson&nbsp;doubled Chelsea's lead in the 80th minute and they held out for the win despite a late strike from prolific Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo. It is a fifth straight win for Chelsea, who look increasingly like being Liverpool's main challengers this season, with Arsenal and City faltering.

But Maresca is still being coy over his side's title chances. "It's not about how many games we win," he said. "It's about being realistic. There are things we have to do better. That's why I said for me we are not ready."

Tottenham's romp on the south coast was the latest chapter in a topsy-turvy season for Ange Postecoglou's men, who have now won seven and lost seven of their 16 top-flight matches. James Maddison opened the scoring in 36 seconds and further goals followed for Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski and Pape Sarr in a staggering 25-minute spell.

England midfielder Maddison grabbed a second goal deep into first-half stoppage time to make it 5-0 but there were no additions in the second half.

Shortly after the match Southampton issued a statement saying they had made the "difficult decision to part ways" with Martin with the club rooted to the bottom of the Premier League, nine points from safety.

Wolves, also in the relegation zone, fired O'Neil after a fourth straight defeat. In the early kick-off, Ismaila Sarr scored twice as Crystal Palace moved four points clear of the relegation zone following a 3-1 victory at Brighton.

Premier League: Manchester United deepen Guardiola's gloom, Chelsea gain on Liverpool

Michael Schumacher's family is fighting hard to protect the F1 legend's health&nbsp;and privacy. Notably, Schumacher has been away from the limelight following his life-altering skiing accident. The 55-year-old hasn't appeared in public since the Dec 2013 tragedy. Amid all this, Schumacher's family is reportedly battling to keep details about his health confidential amid an ongoing blackmail trial involving his former bodyguard, Markus Fritsche.

Fritsche worked for Schumacher, the seven-time F1 world champion, until 2001 and is reportedly accused of assisting in the blackmail of the family and allegedly using hundreds of personal photos, videos and the driver's medical records. As a result, he has now appeared in court, in Germany, alongside Yilmaz Tozturkan, a bouncer, and his son, IT specialist Daniel Lins, over the alleged extortion plot of the Ferrari icon. In addition, Tozturkan is accused of threatening to release family photos on the dark web unless he is paid a handsome amount.

Thus, Schumacher's wife&nbsp;Corinna&nbsp;has lodged a request for the blackmail case to be heard privately. The request has been made as Corinna and her family want&nbsp;the public to be barred from the hearing if her husband's health is discussed.&nbsp;

Schumacher sustained a brain injury when he struck his head on a rock while skiing with his son Mick in the French Alps in 2013. Since then, he has been kept away from public glare. At first, he was in a coma before undergoing two life-saving operations. In April 2014, it was revealed that Schumacher had "moments of consciousness and awakening". Later in the year, he emerged from his coma and moved to a rehabilitation clinic before being shifted to his family home on Lake Geneva, with a medical team and his wife working round-the-clock for him.

Following his accident, Schumacher's wife has allowed only a select few trusted relatives and friends to visit him at regular intervals. As a new challenge has shown up, in the form of the blackmail trail, Corinna aims to keep everything private to protect her husband's health and her family's peace.

Michael Schumacher's family battling to protect F1 legend's privacy amid blackmail trial: Report

Brisbane's weather came to India's rescue as most of Monday's play was lost because of rain on the third day of the third Test against Australia at the Gabba. A rattled India limped to 51-4 at stumps on a day when the Australians were only able to bowl 17 overs&nbsp;and the players left the field seven times due to downpours. KL Rahul was on 33 at the end of a wet day, along with skipper Rohit Sharma, who was yet to score. Needing 245 to avoid the follow-on, India lost three early wickets in the first session&nbsp;after bowling Australia out for 445.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli all fell to Australia's opening bowlers Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. They then lost Rishabh Pant just before tea, which was called early because of another downpour that then kept the players off the field for over two hours.

When they did return, bad light saw the Australians throw the ball to off-spinner Nathan Lyon and part-timer Travis Head. But after only 2.5 overs, umpires Richard Kettleborough and Richard Illingworth decided that the light was not good enough and called an end to play.

With most of the first day also lost to rain Saturday, Head and Steve Smith's second-day centuries ensured that India could not realistically win the Test. More rain is forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday, raising India's hopes of salvaging a draw and heading to Melbourne with the series locked at 1-1.

Australia resumed the third day on 405-7 and were eventually bowled out for 445, wicketkeeper Alex Carey was the last man out after scoring an enterprising 70.&nbsp;

India's first target was to avoid the follow-on and raise the&nbsp;chances of holding out for a draw.

The Indian innings got off to a terrible start when Jaiswal edged Starc's first ball for four runs through gully&nbsp;but chipped the next one straight to Mitchell Marsh at square leg. Fellow opener Rahul got a nasty hit on the wrist from a Hazlewood ball that rose sharply off a good length, but was able to continue after treatment.

In Starc's next over, Gill edged to gully where Marsh took a brilliant catch&nbsp;diving high to his left to leave India in tatters at 6-2. Kohli was next to go, caught behind by Carey after playing at a full ball from Hazelwood that he could have left alone but got a faint edge through to the wicketkeeper.

To add insult to injury, as Kohli was walking off, the rain started falling and early lunch was called. There were more rain delays after lunch as Rahul and Pant tried to rescue the situation, but at the score of&nbsp;44, Pant got a thin edge off Pat Cummins to Carey.

BGT, Gabba Test: Indian batters falter again, Australia in driver's seat despite rain playing havoc on Day 3

India continued to struggle on Day 3 of the Gabba Test, Brisbane versus Australia on Monday (Dec 16).

Australia are way ahead in the third Test, of the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), after centuries from Travis Head and Steve Smith on Day 2.

With the day resuming at Australia being 405-7, they were bundled out for 445 as Jasprit Bumrah shined with 6 for 76.

But on the crease, India's top-order fell flat once again as Mitchell Starc made early inroads. He removed Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill for cheap, with the latter playing an uppish drive to be caught by Mitchell Marsh. Marsh, at gully, plucked a blinder to dismiss Gill.&nbsp;

It was a full-length delivery angled across the right-hander. Gill went for an ambitious drive, when he could have left the delivery, as an outside edge took the ball towards Marsh. The all-rounder lept to his left to take complete the catch with both hands. Here is the video -&nbsp;

English commentator Isha Guha made headlines during Day 2 of the third Test of&nbsp;2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia at The Gabba, Brisbane on Sunday (Dec 15). Lauding Jasprit Bumrah, who took a five-fer despite Australia ending the day at 405-7, Guha referred to him as the 'Most Valuable Primate' (MVP), suggesting that he is the lone warrior for India's bowling department in the ongoing tour and lacks support from other end. However, the usage of the word 'primate' irked Indian fans who slammed Guha on social media platforms.

<h2>'I used a word that can be interpreted in a number of different ways'</h2>

Guha has now made an apology on Day 3, after Bumrah's 6 for 76 led to Australia being dismissed for 445 in a rain-hit third Test.

Guha wrote on X, "Yesterday in commentary I used a word that can be interpreted in a number of different ways. I'd like to apologise for any offence caused. I set myself really high standards when it comes to empathy and respect of others."

"If you listen to the full transcript I only meant the highest praise for one of India's greatest players. And someone that I admire greatly. I'm an advocate for equality and someone who has spent their career thinking about inclusion and understanding in the game.

"I was trying to frame the enormity of his achievement and I've chosen the wrong word. And for that I am deeply sorry. As someone who is also of South Asian heritage I hope people would recognise there was no other intention or malice there, and I hope this hasn't overshadowed what has been a great Test match so far - and I look forward to seeing how it progresses," the former cricketer-turned-commentator added.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka was handed a wildcard Friday for the Australian Open, a tournament he first played almost 20 years ago. The 39-year-old Swiss won the title at Melbourne Park in 2014, defeating Rafael Nadal. It was&nbsp;his first Grand Slam triumph and he peaked at world number three with the victory, later adding major titles at Roland Garros in 2015 and the US Open a year later.

"I'm incredibly grateful to receive a wildcard into the Australian Open in 2025," said Wawrinka, who has battled injuries in recent years and had drifted down the rankings. "Melbourne holds such a special place in my heart -– it's where I won my first Grand Slam and is one of the greatest milestones of my career."

Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka was handed a wildcard Friday for the Australian Open, a tournament he first played almost 20 years ago. The 39-year-old Swiss won the title at Melbourne Park in 2014, defeating Rafael Nadal. It was his first Grand Slam triumph and he peaked at world number three with the victory, later adding major titles at Roland Garros in 2015 and the US Open a year later. "I'm incredibly grateful to receive a wildcard into the Australian Open in 2025," said Wawrinka, who has battled injuries in recent years and had drifted down the rankings. "Melbourne holds such a special place in my heart -– it's where I won my first Grand Slam and is one of the greatest milestones of my career." Pakistan cricket team will not travel to India for the 2026 T20 World Cup. The Men in Green will play their games in Sri Lanka, who are the co-hosts for the mega event. This development comes after the International Cricket Council (ICC) reportedly accepted the hybrid model for the 2025 Champions Trophy (CT 2025) on Friday (Dec 13). The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) denied sending Team India to travel to Pakistan, i.e. the original hosts, for the marquee tournament. Hence, the Rohit Sharma-led team will play their games in Dubai. Following this, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have also been allowed to not travel to India for the next edition of the T20 WC.

HERE ARE SOME KEY DEVELOPMENTS POST THE ICC-PCB-BCCI meeting:

– ICC gave the green signal to the Champions Trophy to be held in a hybrid model, after an agreement with PCB and BCCI.
– CT 2025 games will be held across three venues in Pakistan with India games in Dubai.
– BCCI and PCB have agreed in principle that Pakistan will not travel to India for the India-Pakistan match in the 2026 T20 World Cup. Thus, the high-voltage clash will take place in Colombo, Sri Lanka (the co-hosts).&nbsp;

The PCB has also been given the hosting rights for the ICC Women's tournament after 2027. It will mark the first time for the Asian giants to host a marquee event in women's cricket.&nbsp;

All this after a lengthy saga between ICC, PCB and BCCI regarding the CT 2025 future, which will be held in February-March 2025. While the hybrid model was expected to be the only way out, it has also solved the issue for the next big ICC event in men's cricket, i.e. the T20 World Cup in 2026.&nbsp;

However, there is no word regarding PCB sending their team to India for the 2025 ICC Women's ODI World Cup. A final call is likely to be out in a few months.

Pakistan to not travel to India for 2026 T20 World Cup, will play their games in Sri Lanka: Report

Arne Slot insisted Darwin Nunez is still an important part of Liverpool's plans despite the struggling striker falling below the "standard" in the Champions League win against Girona. Mired in a lengthy slump, Nunez has scored only one goal in his last 10 appearances and three in total all season. In Liverpool's victory in Girona on Tuesday, the Uruguay international cut an increasingly frustrated figure after missing several chances.

Slot admitted he kept Nunez on for an extended period, before eventually replacing him in the 71st minute, in the hope he would score a confidence-boosting goal. After receiving criticism in midweek, Nunez posted on Instagram: "They are not all, they are some. Thank you Reds for your support, we are all still together."

Slot believes the 25-year-old needs the support of fans and his team-mates to help him rediscover the form that made him such a sensation at Benfica prior to his move to Anfield in 2022.

"All our players feel the support of our fans but he is definitely one of them. Mo (Salah) is scoring so many goals he likes the support of the fans but doesn't really need it at the moment," Slot told reporters on Friday. "We all saw they did something with him when he missed a few chances on Tuesday and everyone needs an arm around you, either from a team-mate, the fans or your manager.

"But I also made it clear to him that he is not only judged on the goals he scores, he is also judged on the team performance and he adds something to the team performance as well with his work-rate and how much he does winning the ball back high up the pitch."

<h2>- 'Disappointed' -</h2>

Slot's only issue with Nunez was a dip in his work-rate against Girona that drew a rebuke from the Reds boss. "Ideally he would have scored a few goals more. But what should always be there is work-rate and I think that is what he has, apart from two games," Slot said.

I said that to him yesterday and the last half-hour against Girona wasn't of the standard he should have. "That had a lot to do with him being disappointed at missing a few chances."

Nunez's position will come under increasing pressure with Diogo Jota and long-term absentee Federico Chiesa set to return to the squad for the visit of Fulham on Saturday.

Chiesa has played for just 18 minutes in the Premier League since joining Liverpool from Juventus in the close-season. The Italy forward has only three appearances in all competitions for the Reds, who sit four points clear at the top of the Premier League as they chase a first title since 2020.

"Federico missed quite a lot for a long time, was ill last week, so we have to wait and see how he is exactly doing," Slot said. "But maybe Diogo is in the squad and maybe Federico as well, but that depends a bit on the numbers we have and also how he recovered from his illness."

Liverpool boss Arne Slot defends Darwin Nunez after side's Champions League win vs Girona

England will lock horns with hosts New Zealand in the third and final Test at Seddon Park, Hamilton. With the Ben Stokes-led visitors leading the three-match series 2-0, they will be eager to inflict a clean sweep whereas Tom Latham-led Kiwis will be desperate to end the series on a high. After whitewashing India in India, no one expected the Black Caps to be reeling 0-2, thus, they will be keen to end the series with a 2-1 scoreline.&nbsp;

While England won the series opener by eight wickets, in Christchurch, they defeated New Zealand by a whopping 323-run margin in Wellington. Talking about the second and penultimate contest, NZ opted to bat first as the visitors rode on Harry Brook's second successive ton (123) to post 280. The Kiwis only managed 125 as they conceded a vital 155-run lead. In their second essay, the English batters combined to take the score to 427/6, courtesy of Joe Root's ton and nineties from Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell.&nbsp;

Chasing a mammoth 583, the hosts got dismissed for 259 to lose convincingly. It will be a huge task for the listless home side to avoid a clean sweep in the series finale.&nbsp;

Steve Smith hasn't had a good run in 2024. The right-hander&nbsp;has averaged 23.20 in seven Tests with only a solitary in 2024. Ahead of the third Test between India and Australia, of the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), at The Gabba, Brisbane, skipper Pat Cummins has backed Smith to regain form. Smith, who has scores of 0, 17 and 2 in the ongoing series, will be desperate for a big score and help Australia take a 2-1 lead.

Cummins said in the pre-match presser, "You look at his record, stats would suggest (runs) are not far around the corner. In particular this year, he's looking fantastic in the nets, just looking really sharp, looking like he's got plenty of time. doing all the right things like he always does."

Cummisn added, "He got caught down the leg side last game. I don't know if you can look into that too much, so I'm sure a big score's just around the corner."

Ahead of the crucial Brisbane tie, Cummins emphasised on the need to win at home, especially to keep their hopes of playing the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final next year. "Winning in Australia is a matter of pride. These are our home conditions, and we've grown up playing here. To succeed in the World Test Championship, you need to win all your home series and capitalise on opportunities abroad. That's the standard we've set for ourselves," the pacer added.

In the ongoing 2023-25 WTC cycle, South Africa are at the top and need only one win to cement a spot in the final. Meanwhile, Australia and India are placed at the second and third spot, respectively.&nbsp;

Talking about the India-Australia series, the visitors won the series opener in Perth by 295 runs before Cummins-led hosts won the pink-ball contest by ten wickets to level the series.
