Taiwan's people have to choose in next year's election whether the island keeps moving forward on a road to democracy or "walks into the embrace of China", the frontrunner to be the next president said on Tuesday.

The issue of China, which claims&nbsp;Taiwan&nbsp;as its own territory, looms large ahead of the Jan. 13 presidential and parliamentary elections, especially as Beijing has been stepping up its military pressure on the island.

Lai Ching-te, vice president and the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) presidential candidate, has led in most opinion polls ahead of the election. The DPP champions&nbsp;Taiwan's separate identity from China.

The largest opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), which traditionally favours close ties with Beijing, is locked in a dispute with the smaller&nbsp;Taiwan&nbsp;People's Party (TPP) about which of their candidates should run as president and which as vice president after agreeing to work together.

Lai, speaking to reporters and supporters after formally registering his candidacy with the election commission, said&nbsp;Taiwan's security was an international issue and the world was watching the election.

"The people of&nbsp;Taiwan&nbsp;have to choose between trusting&nbsp;Taiwan, allowing&nbsp;Taiwan&nbsp;to continue to move forward on the road of democracy, and relying on China, following the old path of the one-China principle, and walking into the embrace of China," he said.

Beijing has demanded that Taipei accepts that both sides of the&nbsp;Taiwan&nbsp;Strait belong to "one China", which the DPP-led government has rejected saying only the island's people can decide their future.

Lai on Monday announced&nbsp;Taiwan's high-profile former de facto ambassador the United States, Hsiao Bi-khim, as his running mate.

Like Lai, Hsiao is vilified by China, which has twice placed sanctions on her, most recently in April, saying she was an "independence diehard".

Late on Monday, Chinese state television lambasted the Lai-Hsiao team in a commentary, saying they were "colluding villains".

"Taiwan&nbsp;independence means war. The Lai-Hsiao independence double act will intensify cross-strait tensions and conflict," the broadcaster said in the commentary posted on its website.

Lai has dismissed China's criticism, saying on Monday it was further proof of its efforts to interfere in the election.

Lai, standing next to Hsiao outside the election commission, said he was full of confidence.

"We both deeply love this land, passionately love this country," he added.

The election registration deadline is Friday. It is not clear when the opposition parties will register their candidates.

The KMT's presidential candidate, Hou Yu-ih, said he had spoken with the TPP's presidential candidate and party chairman Ko Wen-je on Tuesday and expressed his "sincerity" in wanting to keep talking about how they should team up.

"From start to finish I have never insisted I had to be the lead," Hou said, referring to being the presidential rather than vice presidential candidate.

Ko, a former Taipei mayor who founded the TPP in 2019, said on Sunday he would "continue to fight to the end as the TPP's presidential candidate".

The missile is capable of carrying multiple thermonuclear warheads. As per Russia’s claims, the new missile is capable of striking through the defence shields of the US and its allies.

The Kozelsk regiment, where the new missile was loaded into a silo, was the first one in Russia's Strategic Missile Forces to start upgrading to silo-based Yars missiles, Russian news outlet RIA reported.

<h2>Russia focusing on ‘naval nuclear forces’</h2>

The move came hours after Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu said Tuesday his nation was paying “special attention to the buildup of naval strategic nuclear forces."

In a meeting with Russia’s military chiefs, the minister added that the share of modern ships in the naval nuclear forces had reached 100 per cent after three nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines entered the navy's service.

He also claimed that Ukraine stood no chance against Russia to materialise its bid to take control of several areas on the left side of the Dnipro River.

"All attempts of the armed forces of Ukraine to conduct an amphibious operation in the Kherson direction were unsuccessful. Thanks to the proactive and professional actions of our servicemen, units of the marines and special operations forces of the Ukrainian troops are suffering enormous losses," he said.

Meanwhile, Russia is also planning to test the world's largest ballistic missile, called Satan 2, over the South Pole.

Dubbed an&nbsp;'unstoppable' doomsday weapon, it travels at the speed of 15,880 miles per hour and is as big as a 14-storey tower block.&nbsp;

Russian media recently reported it, but the news was taken down shortly after it was published.

Last week, the Russian rocket forces loaded an intercontinental ballistic missile equipped with the nuclear-capable Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle into a launch silo in southern Russia.

Putin unveiled the hypersonic vehicle in 2018 and said it was developed in response to the development of a new generation of weapons by the United States.

Russia installed its first Avangard-equipped missile in 2019 at the same Orenburg facility.

Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka told parliament on Wednesday that the Pacific Islands nation was likely to collaborate with China on a key port modernisation and shipyard project, after discussing it in a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Rabuka told Fiji's parliament on Wednesday his government was focused on upgrading infrastructure, "particularly the modernisation of port facilities and shipyards".

"I anticipate potential collaboration with China in that endeavour, given China's globally competitive shipbuilding," he said.

Rabuka met Xi for the first time on the sidelines of the APEC forum in San Francisco last week. He said on Wednesday that Fiji supports China's vision for global security, and that Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative "aligns with our nation's development agenda".

Discussions were underway to address Fiji's "debt crisis" responsibly, he added. Fiji has external debt equivalent to 56% of gross domestic product, most of which is owed to multilateral development banks. An Australian-based ship design company said Rabuka had earlier sought the involvement of Australia, Fiji's largest aid donor, in the shipyard project.

Sea Transport chairman Stuart Ballantyne said his company had received a request from Fiji for a fleet of commercial ships it could assemble locally.

Ballantyne said he had advised Rabuka on the broad scope of the shipyard project, which would involve moving an "archaic" shipyard near Suva to the other side of the island, Lautoka, and constructing two undercover sheds.

Rabuka wants to revive shipbuilding as a training ground for tradespeople in Fiji, from carpenters to electricians, Ballantyne said, adding he was unaware of any Chinese involvement.

"If the Chinese have stepped up to the plate - they are the aggressors in the Pacific, the movers and shakers," he said.

The Australian government has funded a feasibility study with Fiji Ports to explore redevelopment options at the Lautoka foreshore, including a barge landing and ship-building and maintenance facility.

Fiji Ports chief executive officer Vajira Piyasena told Reuters the government had called for expressions of interest from investors for a joint shipyard venture in September.

The government advertisement said the project would meet the government's shipbuilding requirements for five years, with a business model based on a joint venture with Fiji Ships and Heavy Industry, a subsidiary of Fiji Ports.

An official said only local proposals had been received, and the official was not aware of any contract being awarded.

Fiji Ports referred questions about China's involvement to Rabuka's office, which did not respond to requests for comment.

China's embassy in Fiji did not respond to a request for comment.

China has been pushing for greater security and trade ties with Pacific Islands countries. It has signed a security pact with Solomon Islands, raising alarm in the United States which responded by striking a defence deal with Papua New Guinea.

Tel Aviv has also agreed to a multi-day ceasefire and has also vowed to allow more fuel and humanitarian aid into the besieged Palestinian enclave.

"The government approved the broad outlines of the first stage of an agreement under which at least 50 kidnapped people -- women and children -- will be released over four days during which there will be a lull in the fighting," the statement said.

Earlier on Tuesday (Nov 21), Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had asked his government to back the deal in order to secure the release of all hostages.

He said that though this was a difficult decision to take, but also the right thing to do.

"Tonight, we face a difficult decision, but it is the right decision, all the security factors fully support it, they clarified in their full professional assessment that our security of our forces will be guaranteed during the days of ceasefire and that the intelligence effort will be maintained," Netanyahu said.
