Binance's agreements with the Treasury Department's agencies consist of a civil money penalty of $3.4 billion and a $968 million penalty involving OFAC. These mark the agencies' largest settlements in history.

Yellen said the penalties, and a five-year monitorship imposed on Binance, mark a "milestone for the virtual currency industry."

<h2>Binance's violations</h2>

The violations made by Binance included its negligence in preventing and reporting transactions with groups like the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, and matching trades between US users and those in sanctioned jurisdictions like Iran and North Korea, said the Treasury.

Binance must file suspicious activity reports required by law, on top of reviewing past transactions to report such activity to authorities, Garland said.

"This will advance our criminal investigations into malicious cyber activity and terrorism fundraising, including the use of cryptocurrency exchanges to support groups such as Hamas," he added.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu calls hostage truce deal 'right decision', asks for cabinet's backing

A United States warplane on Tuesday (Nov 21) attacked an air base west of Baghdad and killed several Iran-backed militiamen, the Pentagon said.

This came after a short-range ballistic projectile was fired at American and allied personnel in Iraq.

"We can confirm an attack last night by Iran-backed militias using a close-range ballistic missile against US and coalition forces at Al-Asad Airbase, which resulted in eight injuries and some minor damage to infrastructure," Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Pat Ryder said in a statement.

"Immediately following the attack, a US military AC-130 aircraft in the area conducted a self-defence strike against an Iranian-backed militia vehicle and a number of Iranian-backed militia personnel involved in this attack. This self-defence strike resulted in several enemy KIA (killed in action)," Ryder said.

The Ain al-Asad Air Base, which is located in the desert of Iraq's Western Anbar province, hosts forces of the US-led coalition fighting the Islamic State (IS) group in Iraq.

This is the first time the United States announced a strike on Iranian proxy forces in Iraq after targeting Tehran-linked sites in Syria on three occasions in recent weeks.

The move by the US comes after a spate of attacks were reported in Iraq aimed at American troops which claimed the lives of several army personnel.

<h2>US forces attacked approximately 66 times</h2>

Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh during a press briefing said that the US forces "have been attacked approximately 66 times since October 17 -- 32 separate times in Iraq and 34 separate times in Syria."

The attacks have wounded nearly 62, said Singh. It doesn't yet include the eight cited by Ryder since that most recent projectile strike is still being evaluated.

Islamic Jihad, the Palestinian terrorist group, announced on Wednesday (November 22) announced that Hanna Katzir (76) an Israeli hostage has passed away. <h2>The hostage exchange and truce</h2>

As per the deal, Hamas is going to release 50 hostages in its custody in exchange for 150 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody. If Hamas releases another 50 hostages, Israel will release 150 more prisoners. Israel has already released list of 300 prisoners who will be gradually released under the deal.

A Hamas official has been quoted by Al Jazeera as saying that the truce between the warring sides will begin at 10 am on Thursday (Nov 23).

Hamas fighters crossed Gaza Strip border and launched attack in southern Israel on October 7 and, as per Israeli tally, killed 1200 people and took more than 200 hostages. Israel then launched an overwhelming military attack with thousands of air raids on the Palestinian enclave. Israeli tanks and troops&nbsp;also launched ground attack.

Intense diplomacy was going on in past weeks to secure a prisoner exchange deal and ceasefire. According to Hamas-run health ministry in the Gaza Strip, Israeli attacks have claimed around 14,000 lives.

This was reflected in the post US President Joe Biden made on social media platform X.

Officials in Iceland fear that a potential Fagradalsfjall volcanic eruption may occur in the southwest part of the country with only 30 minutes prior notice, even as adverse weather conditions are hampering earthquake monitoring efforts.

The meteorological office on Monday (Nov 21) said it is still getting reports of hundreds of minor earthquakes surrounding the southwest Grindavik town—a fishing town located just 16 miles (25.7 kilometres) from Keflavík airport, Iceland's largest airport and the main hub for international flights.

Thousands have already been moved out of Grindavik, with officials warning that they could remain evacuated for months.

More than 1,000 tremors have been reported in the last 24 hours from Monday in Iceland, heightening fears of imminent volcanic eruption.

Director of the country’s civil defence police unit Vídir Reynisson told reporters that the volcano could blow ‘within days, not months’.

Lebanese broadcaster Al Mayadeen said an Israeli strike on Tuesday near the town of Tir Harfa, about a mile from the Israeli frontier, had killed two of its journalists and a third person at the site where they were filming.

Al Mayadeen accused Israel of deliberately targeting the TV crew because the channel was known to be pro-Palestinian and pro-Iran's regional military alliance.

Lebanon's caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati said in a statement that the strike was an Israeli attempt to silence the media, adding there were "no limits to Israeli crimes".

Israel's military said it was "aware of a claim regarding journalists ... who were killed as a result of (Israeli army) fire."

"This is an area with active hostilities, where exchange of fire occur. Presence in the area is dangerous," it said.

The Israeli military has previously said it cannot guarantee journalists' safety in areas where it is fighting. Israeli authorities have sought to block Al Mayadeen's websites and seize equipment linked to the station.
