The New York Times, using artificial intelligence tool to scan satellite imagery of south Gaza for bomb craters claimed that Israel used the terrifying 2,000-pound bombs on areas it called "safe" for civilians and along the evacuation routes it claimed were "safe" for innocent Gazans to escape the bombings. The investigation identified as many as 208 craters through satellite imagery and drone footage. According to munitions experts, only 2,000-pound bombs can form craters that measure 40 feet across or larger as was identified in the imagery. The report added the bombs were used at least 200 times and that "even for those who followed every evacuation order, there was still no safety to be found". Meanwhile, CNN also cited similar findings, stating that Tel Aviv's bombing in the first month of the war "had not been seen since Vietnam". Notably, the US has sent more than 5,000 MK-84 munitions to Israel since the war began, despite President Joe Biden urging his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu to reduce civilian casualties. When quizzed about the use of the bombs on civilians, an Israeli military spokesman said Tel Aviv's priority was destroying Hamas and such questions would be looked into at a later stage. Among the ones seized were baby Arrau turtles which are considered the largest river turtle in South America, and the yellow-spotted river turtle, which were found in small transparent plastic containers inside cardboard boxes.

Both turtle species are listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) of Wild Fauna and Flora Appendix II. These require the tracking and regulation of trade.

As per Interpol, there is a black market for illegal wildlife products worth up to $20 billion per year, which is forcing species to the brink of extinction.

Sentences of 11 Americans shortened As per the Bloomberg report, the prison sentences of 11 Americans were shortened. These citizens were either serving decades-long or life sentences for non-violent drug offences. Speaking to the news agency, an official said that some people with crack cocaine convictions will have their sentences commuted, noting that powder cocaine offences tend to receive shorter punishments. The United Kingdom police on Friday (Dec 22) said that they've opened a criminal investigation into the disappearance of a British teenage boy who went missing and resurfaced in France six years after. The Greater Manchester Police is treating the case of 17-year-old Alex Batty as abduction. Batty has now returned to UK.

Batty disappeared in October 2017 when he was in Spain with his mother and grandfather. He was found last week in a mountainous area in southern France.

<h2>Fed up of drifting around</h2>

Batty has told British media that he decided to leave his mother and grandfather as he was fed up of drifting around Europe alongside them.

"I realised it wasn't a great way to live for my future," he told The Sun.

"Moving around. No friends, no social life. Working, working, work and not studying. That's the life I imagined I would be leading if I were to stay with my mum."

Abu Obeida, spokesman for Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, said in an audio recording that any further release of hostages held in Gaza depended on a "cessation of aggression".

Neither Israel's continued offensive nor "direct military operations" would bring the hostages home, he said.

"It is not possible to release enemy prisoners alive except by entering into negotiations."

As per the Israeli authorities, 129 hostages remain held in Gaza.

Abu Obeida further said that there was "no alternative" to negotiations, warning that Israeli fire could lead to the deaths of more hostages.

He then took a dig at Israel's leader saying that their "decision... evades facing and recognising the truth".

After releasing the spokesman's recording, Hamas' armed wing also shared a video that showcased three Israeli hostages, who they claimed had been killed in Israeli strikes.

The US Air Force has been planning to reclaim the Pacific Island airfield – the same place from where they once launched&nbsp;atomic bombs on Japan – and bring it back into commission as it takes steps for broadening its basing options in case of any hostilities with China, said the service’s top officer in the Pacific. 
 
Speaking in an interview with Nikkei Asia, commander of Pacific Air Forces Gen Kenneth Wilsbach said that North Airfield, which is located on the island of Tinian, will turn into an “extensive” facility after it has been completely reclaimed from a forest which has grown over the base since it was abandoned by the last US Army Air Force units in 1946. 
 
“If you pay attention in the next few months, you will see significant progress, especially at Tinian North,” said Wilsbach. Facilities are also being added by the Air Force at Tinian International Airport, which is in the centre of the island.

Tinian, as well as the nearby islands of Guam and Saipan, have played a major role in the US air operations. During World War II, after Japanese occupiers captured all three islands, it was home to US fleets of B-29 Superfortress bombers which caused destruction on the Japanese homeland. 
 
On March 10, 1945, the deadliest bombing raid in history was carried out on Tokyo in which as many as 100,000 people were killed and a million had suffered injuries. The attack was carried out by B-29s, which were launched from the three islands. 
 
In 1945, amid relentless bombing on Japan, North Field on Tinian – which had four 8,000-foot runways and 40,000 personnel – became the world's largest and busiest airport.

Speaking in an interview with Nikkei Asia, commander of Pacific Air Forces Gen Kenneth Wilsbach said that North Airfield, which is located on the island of Tinian, will turn into an “extensive” facility after it has been completely reclaimed from a forest which has grown over the base since it was abandoned by the last US Army Air Force units in 1946. “If you pay attention in the next few months, you will see significant progress, especially at Tinian North,” said Wilsbach. Facilities are also being added by the Air Force at Tinian International Airport, which is in the centre of the island. As per the Nikkei report, Wilsbach did not provide a timeline on when they will make the airfield operational. Role of Tinian Island in World War II Tinian, as well as the nearby islands of Guam and Saipan, have played a major role in the US air operations. During World War II, after Japanese occupiers captured all three islands, it was home to US fleets of B-29 Superfortress bombers which caused destruction on the Japanese homeland. On March 10, 1945, the deadliest bombing raid in history was carried out on Tokyo in which as many as 100,000 people were killed and a million had suffered injuries. The attack was carried out by B-29s, which were launched from the three islands. In 1945, amid relentless bombing on Japan, North Field on Tinian – which had four 8,000-foot runways and 40,000 personnel – became the world's largest and busiest airport. Another B-29, called Bockscar, took off from Tinian three days later and dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki in which 46,000 people were killed in its initial blast. (With inputs from agencies)
