Finland’s centre-right candidate and former Prime Minister Alexander Stubb, on Sunday (Feb 11) won the high-stakes Finnish presidential election after his rival ex-foreign minister and liberal candidate Pekka Haavisto conceded with nearly all the votes counted.&nbsp;

<h2>What happened?</h2>

The National Coalition Party (NCP) candidate narrowly won defeating liberal Green Party member Haavisto who conceded saying “Well, Alexander. Congratulations to Finland’s 13th president.”

He added, “I believe Finland now gets a good president for the republic. Alexander Stubb is an experienced, competent person for the job. No more babble.”

Stubb had declared himself the winner in the run-off vote after securing 51.6 per cent of the votes after 99.7 per cent of ballots had been counted, against Haavisto’s 48.4 per cent, reported Reuters citing justice ministry data.&nbsp;

The pro-European and strong supporter of Ukraine made a return to politics with this election after a seven-year hiatus. “This is the greatest honour of my life,” said Stubb after Haavisto conceded.

The NCP candidate also led the polls after the first round on January 28 with 27.2 per cent of votes, while Haavisto came in a close second with 25.8 per cent of the vote.&nbsp;

<h2>High-stakes election</h2>

Amid the increased tensions between Finland and neighbouring Russia since the invasion of Ukraine, the election for the Nordic nation came at an unprecedented time. &nbsp;

Helsinki has also recently become a part of NATO and closed its eastern border with Russia, actions which would have been dismissed as an absurd thought a few years ago.&nbsp;

Unlike most European countries, the president of Finland holds executive power in formulating foreign and security policy, including acting as the supreme commander of the country’s armed forces.&nbsp;

Stubb will replace incumbent President Sauli Niinisto, 75, who is required to step down after serving two six-year terms. The 55-year-old will&nbsp;take office amid severely strained&nbsp;relations between Finland and Russia following Moscow’s invasion of Kyiv in 2022.

Stubb and Haavisto, have both served as foreign ministers and championed Finland’s independence and its new role as a NATO member. They also called for a tough stance towards Russia.

However, Stubb is in favour of deep NATO cooperation including transport of nuclear weapons across Finnish soil and placing some troops of the United States-led alliance in the country permanently. However, he does not support storing nuclear weapons in Finland.&nbsp;

Therefore, ‘mounting frustration’ with Netanyahu has prompted some of Biden’s aides to urge him to be more publicly critical of the Israeli PM, reported the WaPo, citing six people familiar with the conversations&nbsp;who spoke on&nbsp;condition of anonymity.&nbsp;

Just last week, on Wednesday (Feb 7), Netanyahu rejected Hamas’ latest offer for a ceasefire and insisted that the country’s total victory in Gaza is within reach, a move that reportedly angered US officials.&nbsp;

A US judge has ordered Elon Musk to comply with a subpoena to answer questions from regulators about his purchases of Twitter shares last year.

The order comes after Musk, who beefed up his stake in Twitter -- now called X -- before buying the company for $44 billion, did not show up for a scheduled deposition in September with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), according to a legal filing.

"The court grants the SEC's application to enforce the subpoena," the decision by California judge Laurel Beeler, published on Saturday and seen by AFP, stated.&nbsp;

The billionaire boss and the SEC now have a week to agree on a time and place for Musk to give testimony, it added.

The SEC investigation pertains to all of Musk's purchases of Twitter stock in 2022 as well as his statements and filings with market regulators, court documents stated.

Musk took part in two half-day depositions in July with the SEC, which told the court it has since received "thousands of documents" that have raised questions they want him to answer.

Musk's objections to the latest deposition included an accusation that the SEC is using its power to "harass" him, the commission said in the filing.

"The SEC has already taken Mr. Musk's testimony multiple times in this misguided investigation -- enough is enough," Musk attorney Alex Spiro said in reply to an AFP inquiry.

But the SEC had argued that "Musk's ongoing refusal to comply with the SEC's administrative subpoena is hindering and delaying the SEC staff's investigation to determine whether violations of the federal securities laws have occurred," according to court documents.

Musk's role at the social network has been marked by numerous controversies and led to various legal actions on the part of investors, former employees and companies that had contracts with Twitter.&nbsp;

Shareholders, for example, have filed a lawsuit against Musk, accusing him of disclosing his five percent stake in Twitter too late, after the deadline set by the SEC.

The SEC investigation pertains to all of Musk's purchases of Twitter stock in 2022 as well as his statements and filings with market regulators, court documents stated. Musk took part in two half-day depositions in July with the SEC, which told the court it has since received "thousands of documents" that have raised questions they want him to answer. Musk's objections to the latest deposition included an accusation that the SEC is using its power to "harass" him, the commission said in the filing. "The SEC has already taken Mr. Musk's testimony multiple times in this misguided investigation -- enough is enough," Musk attorney Alex Spiro said in reply to an AFP inquiry. But the SEC had argued that "Musk's ongoing refusal to comply with the SEC's administrative subpoena is hindering and delaying the SEC staff's investigation to determine whether violations of the federal securities laws have occurred," according to court documents. Musk's role at the social network has been marked by numerous controversies and led to various legal actions on the part of investors, former employees and companies that had contracts with Twitter. Shareholders, for example, have filed a lawsuit against Musk, accusing him of disclosing his five percent stake in Twitter too late, after the deadline set by the SEC.

However, several rights groups were pressing the Dutch government to take steps to rein in the deliveries to Israel. "In doing so, the Netherlands is contributing to serious violations of humanitarian law of war in Gaza," the rights groups argue.

<h2>‘A political decision’ </h2>

Earlier, a local court in The Hague had ruled that the decision to deliver F-35 parts to Israel was totally political and judges should not interfere.

"The considerations that the minister makes are to a large extent of a political and policy nature and judges should leave the minister a large amount of freedom," the court ruled at the time.

Pyongyang's Academy of Defense Science successfully carried out a "ballistic control test firing of 240-mm calibre multiple rocket launcher shells" on Saturday (Feb 10) to develop a "controllable shell and ballistic control system" for the launcher, reported state news agency KCNA.

According to the report, the new rocket launcher would now be "reevaluated" and its battlefield role would also be "increased" due to what it termed "rapid technical improvement."

So we searched her vehicle, our bomb squad, and also the backpack. No explosives were found. But she was also spraying some kind of substance on the ground," he said. The Houston police chief also said that the shooting was an isolated incident and there was no further danger to the public. "But we do want to conduct an adequate search of the building to make sure that nobody is in there hurt. So that will continue. We ask that the public stay away from the area and let us do our job," Finner added. Police spokeswoman Konstantina Dimoglidou said the owner of European Product Carriers was among those killed. The gunman, the 76-year-old former employee was later found dead in another area of the building, said the police.&nbsp;

The alleged shooter “was the weapon of his unlawful act and he had probably shot himself,” said Dimoglidou. The police also found two women, unharmed, who had been locked in a bathroom during the attack.&nbsp;

“We were at our desks working, we heard shots,” an employee who did not identify herself told the Proto Thema. She also said that the gunman had told employees to leave.

She added, "He had his assault weapon next to him and appears to have shot himself in the head."&nbsp;

The officials in Greece have cordoned off the area and said they were investigating the incident.

Shootings, outside of gang-related activity, are rare in Greece due to the country’s strict laws over gun possession.

During the visit, PM Modi will hold bilateral with Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad, the Emir of Qatar, and high dignitaries in Qatar ... this will be the PM's second visit to Qatar... strong bilateral trade between India and Qatar, currently stands at $20 billion," the foreign secretary said.

Kwatra added that the two nations will further discuss the steps to deepen their partnership and increase bilateral trade.

The announcement of the visit comes after Qatar released eight former Indian Navy personnel detained in the country for their alleged involvement in espionage for Israel.

In October 2023, a Qatari court had given the eight men death sentence, which prompted New Delhi to appeal the decision. The court subsequently accepted India’s appeal.

In December last year, PM Modi met Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on the sidelines of the COP28 summit in Dubai. It is believed that this interaction may have prompted a change of position by the Qatari authorities on the case and death sentence.

Indian PM Modi to visit Qatar following release of eight ex-navy personnel

Israel has claimed to have discovered a tunnel underneath the Gaza headquarters of the embattled&nbsp;UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near&nbsp;East (UNRWA). The Israeli military alleged that all tunnels operated by Hamas in the Gaza Strip were powered from there.&nbsp;&nbsp;

To ascertain its claims, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has invited foreign journalists to inspect the 700-metre-long and 18-metre-deep tunnel.&nbsp;

“Acting on ISA intelligence, the forces discovered a tunnel shaft near a UNRWA school, leading to an underground terrorist tunnel beneath UNRWA’s main headquarters," said IDF&nbsp;on X (formerly known as Twitter).&nbsp;

"The forces found electrical infrastructure inside the tunnel connected to UNRWA’s main HQ, suggesting it was supplying the tunnel with electricity — generated by the fuel provided through humanitarian aid,” it added.&nbsp;

IDF claimed to have discovered large quantities of weapons, including rifles, grenades and explosives in the tunnel.&nbsp;

After Israel levelled the allegations, the UNRWA chief&nbsp;Philippe Lazzarini released a statement saying the UN aid agency "did not know" what was underneath its headquarters.&nbsp;

"UNRWA did not know what is under its headquarters in Gaza. Staff left its headquarters in Gaza City on 12 October following the Israeli evacuation orders and as bombardment intensified in the area. We have not used that compound since we left it nor are we aware of any activity that may have taken place there," posted&nbsp;Lazzarini on X.&nbsp;

Lazzarini said whenever such a "suspicious cavity" was found close to or under the UNRWA premises in the past, "protest letters were&nbsp;promptly filed to parties to the conflict, including both the de facto authorities in Gaza (Hamas) and the Israeli authorities".&nbsp;
