The world economy was projected to grow 3.2% both this and next year, the OECD&nbsp;said, nudging up its 2024 forecast from 3.1% previously while leaving 2025 unchanged.

As the lagged impact of central bank tightening evaporates, interest rate cuts would boost spending going forward while consumer spending benefitted from lower inflation, the OECD said in an update of its latest economic outlook.

If the recent decline in oil prices persists, global headline inflation could be 0.5 percentage points lower than expected over the coming year, the Paris-based OECD said.

With inflation heading towards central bank targets, the OECD projected that the U.S. Federal Reserve's main interest rate would ease to 3.5% by the end of 2025 from 4.75%-5% currently and the European Central Bank would cut to 2.25% from 3.5% now.

U.S. growth was expected to slow from 2.6% this year to 1.6% in 2025, though interest rate cuts would help cushion the slowdown, the OECD said, trimming its 2025 estimate from a forecast of 1.8% in May.

The Chinese economy, the world's second-biggest, was seen slowing from 4.9% in 2024 to 4.5% in 2025 as government stimulus spending is offset by flagging consumer demand and a real estate rut.

The euro zone would help make up for slower growth in the two biggest economies next year, with the 20-nation bloc's growth forecast to nearly double from 0.7% growth this year to 1.3% as incomes grow faster than inflation.

The OECD hiked its outlook for the UK economy amid high wage growth, projecting the UK economy expanding by 1.1% in 2024 and 1.2% in 2025, up from May forecasts for 0.4% this year and 1% next year.

A Missouri man was executed on Tuesday (Sep 24) for breaking into a woman's house and repeatedly stabbing her, leading to her death, after robbing the house.&nbsp;However, the prosecutor's office that secured his murder conviction 21 years ago, expressed doubts about the integrity of the case.

Marcellus Williams, 55, was executed in the US state of Missouri after spending more than two decades on death row.&nbsp;

Williams was convicted in 1998 for fatally stabbing Lisha Gayle, who was 42 at the time, during a burglary of her suburban home in St. Louis.&nbsp;The victim's family had pleaded with authorities to spare him and to turn his sentence into a life sentence.&nbsp;

Both Gayle's family and the prosecutor, wanted the death sentence commuted to life in prison.

<h2>How did the murder happen?&nbsp;</h2>

According to the prosecutors, William broke into her home on August 11, 1998, heard the shower running, and found a large butcher knife with which&nbsp;he stabbed Gayle 43 times as she came downstairs. He also robbed her purse and her husband's laptop.&nbsp;

He also stole a jacket to conceal blood on his shirt. His girlfriend also questioned him why he was wearing a jacket on a hot day. The girlfriend further said that she saw the purse and laptop in his car, however, William,&nbsp;sold the computer a day or two later.&nbsp;

An attorney of Williams also argued that there was racial discrimination in selecting jurors and that DNA evidence in the case was mishandled.

Williams was denied a last-minute reprieve from the US Supreme Court after Missouri's top court and governor rejected his mercy requests early this week.

Republican Missouri Gov. Mike Parson said he hoped the execution brings finality to a case that “languished for decades, revictimising Ms&nbsp;Gayle’s family over and over again.”

“No juror nor judge has ever found Williams’ innocence claim to be credible,” Parson said in a statement.

Pope Francis called Israeli strikes on Lebanon a "terrible escalation" of the Middle East conflict on Wednesday at the end of his weekly general audience at the Vatican, which went ahead two days after he cancelled meetings over mild flu.

The 87-year-old pontiff, who has suffered bouts of ill health in recent years, appeared in good form through his audience although he coughed lightly a few times while speaking.

The Vatican has not provided details about the pope's health since announcing on Monday he had cancelled his meetings for that day. It said at the time the pontiff had made the decision as a precautionary measure in view of a trip to Luxembourg and Belgium, which starts on Thursday.

At the audience, the pope confirmed his plans to continue with the visit, and asked for prayers for its success.

The rice, according to IRRI scientists, is also high in protein. It looks similar to white rice, though with smaller grains.

It was developed by converting regular rice varieties into low- or ultra-low GI rice.

The IRRI has already released two low-GI rice varieties in the Philippines, IRRI 125 and IRRI 147.&nbsp;

“We thought that if we could come up with a diet with low glycaemic index properties&nbsp;that could be considered healthier, not only to those subjects who are diabetic and pre-diabetic … then it could be a very good intervention to counter growing incidences [of diabetes]," The Guardian quoted Dr Nese Sreenivasulu as saying. “This could have a big impact in Asia, as well as in Africa, among the rice-consuming countries,” he said.

Right now limited to IRRI laboratories, the rice will soon be on the farms, as Sreenivasulu said the plan was to start growing it in India and the Philippines "as part of the IRRI’s remit to combat poverty and hunger in countries where rice is the staple food."

The Asia-Pacific region accounts for more than 90 per cent of global rice production and consumption.

Amanda Bardwell was caught off-guard when the two went up to her and started telling her that "millions" of Australians are suffering amid the rising prices of general commodities. The video was posted on TikTok and has racked up over 400,000 views.

"What do you have to say about the fact that your company is profiting off price gouging during the context of the cost of living crisis?," the woman, named Megan, asked Bardwell.&nbsp;

The CEO responded with a cliche answer, saying, "Thank you for reaching out to us. We are doing everything we can to recognise that customers are doing it tough...to make sure they are able to get great prices at Woolies."

The woman then goes on to slam the chain for preying on common people, adding that "millions of people in Australia right now have to skip meals in order to survive."
