Swiss authorities have opened an investigation after a woman reportedly died by assisted suicide in a so-called suicide capsule, invented by an Australian citizen. The capsule was apparently used for the first time on Monday afternoon (Sep 23) in a forest close to the German border in the Swiss town of Merishausen. The 64-year-old woman was an American citizen, who made a statement to her lawyers before her death that she was ending her life on her own wish and she had the support of her two sons.

The woman said she was embracing death after being diagnosed with a serious condition that caused her severe pain. According to her lawyer Fiona Stewart, the woman had been examined by a psychiatrist beforehand who had deemed her to be mentally fit.

<h2>Police make arrests</h2>

Swiss police said they have arrested several people in connection with the woman’s suspected assisted suicide. A spokesperson for the police in the canton of Schaffhausen in northern Switzerland said they were also investigating whether other criminal offences had been committed.

At the time of the woman’s death, a German scientist named Florian Willet was present at the scene. Willet is one of the leading members of the Last Resort, an organisation responsible for the capsule and the Swiss arm of Exit International, a nonprofit organisation that lobbies for the legalisation of assisted suicide.

"I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster.&nbsp;It is up to you now to finish the job; and I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job,"&nbsp;the letter read.

Trump “ended relations with Iran like a child and now the Middle East has unravelled,” the letter added.&nbsp;

The correspondence was presented to the court after Routh was arrested on September 15 when US Secret&nbsp;Service agents spotted him with a modified AK-47, attempting to take out Trump.&nbsp;

The gunman's social media footprint showed that he actively talked about politics and&nbsp;exclusively donated to Democratic candidates, dating back to 2019.

In an interview with&nbsp;The New York Times,&nbsp;Routh claimed to have travelled to Ukraine to support the war effort and recruit Afghan soldiers.&nbsp;

In a post in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, he advocated for civilians to change the course of global conflicts.

In June 2020, Routh posted that while he supported Trump in 2016, he was left disappointed by his White House tenure.&nbsp;

"Recovery, identification, and transfer operations are being made extremely delicate by the advanced state of decomposition of the bodies," the army statement said.

"So far, 30 bodies have been counted."

Senegal's coasts are one of the main departure points for scores of migrants hoping to reach Europe every year, many heading for the Spanish Canary Islands.

The Atlantic route is particularly perilous because of the strong currents, and every year officials record thousands of deaths and disappearances from overloaded, often unseaworthy boats.&nbsp;

At least 39 people died in mid-September when a boat carrying migrants sank off the western port town of Mbour.

Following the tragedy, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye vowed to "relentlessly track down" migrant traffickers and called on young people to stay in the West African country.

More than 22,000 migrants have already landed in the Canary Islands so far this year, more than twice the number from the previous year.
