The investigators are analysing evidence collected at the scene and have beefed up the security for staff and others in the area.&nbsp;

The police are labelling the incident as a property crime at this stage as no one was present at the office during the incident.

“We are grateful to Tempe Police for coming quickly to the scene and are fortunate no one was present or injured,” said Sean McEnerney, the Arizona Democratic Party coordinated campaign manager.&nbsp;

Notably, it was the second incident of criminal damage at the Democrat office in as many weeks. On September 16, just after midnight, the front windows were shot with what appeared to be a BB gun or pellet gun.&nbsp;

Kamala Harris' Arizona campaign office shot at, days after Trump assassination bid

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was left red-faced after he made an unfortunate gaffe during a speech at Labour Party's conference on Tuesday (Sep 24). Starmer mistakenly called for the return of "sausages" instead of the hostages, currently in Hamas captivity in the Gaza Strip since October 7 last year.&nbsp;

Starmer was calling for a de-escalation of the situation between Israel and Lebanon, as well as a cease-fire in Gaza when he made the slip.&nbsp;

"I call again for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza, the return of the sausages — the hostages — and a recommitment to the two-state solution: a recognized Palestinian state alongside a safe and secure Israel," he said, while quickly recovering from his mistake.&nbsp;

The video of the speech quickly went viral on social media with netizens having a light laugh at Starmer's expense.&nbsp;

One user said, "This has to be his wurst speech", while another added: "I mean that was a bad slip up, but when he started going on about a two steak solution I'm pretty sure he was just hungry."

A third commented: "This maybe a Freudian slip, but it accurately reflects how the Starmer government and Israel are treating the conflict."

Ryan Routh, the gunman who attempted to kill former US president Donald Trump near his golf&nbsp;course in Florida has been charged with 'attempted assassination' by the prosecutors.&nbsp;

"The Justice Department will not tolerate violence that strikes at the heart of our democracy, and we will find and hold accountable those who perpetrate it. This must stop," said Attorney General Merrick Garland, adding that he would&nbsp;"use every available tool" to hold Routh accountable.

Routh has been remanded in custody ahead of the trial. He already faces up to 20 years in prison on two gun-related charges but faces a maximum life sentence if convicted on the new, more serious charge.&nbsp;

The indictment stated that Routh "did forcibly assault, oppose, impede, intimidate, and interfere" with a Secret Service special agent. He will return to court for another hearing next Monday (Sep 30), where he is expected to enter a plea deal.&nbsp;

Three frontrunners have emerged in polling: former defence minister Shigeru Ishiba, 43-year-old Shinjiro Koizumi <meta charset="utf-8" />–&nbsp;the son of a popular ex-premier&nbsp;<meta charset="utf-8" />–&nbsp;and nationalist hardliner Sanae Takaichi, who would be the first woman in the job.

Whoever wins must face down regional security threats, from an increasingly assertive China and its deepening defence ties with Russia to North Korea's banned missile tests.

At home, the leader will be tasked with breathing life into the economy, as the central bank moves away from decades of monetary easing that has slashed the value of the yen.

In debates and campaigning, many candidates "have claimed that 'I'm the one who can handle Trump' or 'I'm the one who can stand up to China'", Jeffrey J&nbsp;Hall, a lecturer at Kanda University of International Studies, told AFP.

But there are significant differences in their approach to such issues, and although some of the nine have "no hope whatsoever", the race remains "a toss-up".

"This is the most unpredictable that an LDP election has been in many years," Hall said.

<h2>- 'Fair and square' Ishiba -</h2>

LDP presidents are in office for three years and can serve up to three straight terms. Unpopular Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is not running for re-election.

With the factions dissolved, it's unlikely that any one candidate will win enough votes&nbsp;<meta charset="utf-8" />–&nbsp;split between lawmakers and rank-and-file party members&nbsp;<meta charset="utf-8" />–&nbsp;to win outright.

That makes a run-off between two top candidates the most likely scenario, with the winner announced Friday afternoon.

Ishiba, 67, has come close to the top job before, including in 2012 when he lost to arch-rival Shinzo Abe, Japan's longest serving leader who was later assassinated.

The military model-maker with an affinity for 1970s pop idols once alienated party veterans with his "outspoken criticism of LDP policies under Abe", said Yu Uchiyama, a political science professor at the University of Tokyo.

But this time, "with public discontent with the LDP rising, the tide is in favour of Ishiba and his 'fair and square' attitude," Uchiyama told AFP. 
Economic Security Minister Takaichi, 63, is "the most conservative of the top three" and "not the candidate that feminists would want", Hall said.

She is opposed to changing the law to allow separate surnames for married couples, and regularly visits Tokyo's Yasukuni war shrine&nbsp;<meta charset="utf-8" />–a flashpoint in relations with South Korea and China.

However, Naofumi Fujimura, a professor at the Graduate School of Law at Kobe University, said that while for now she needs the support of the LDP's right-wingers, she could perhaps be "more centrist, or more pragmatic" as prime minister.

<h2>- Koizumi offers 'rejuvenation' -</h2>

Photogenic former environment minister Koizumi would be Japan's youngest ever prime minister, but critics&nbsp;<meta charset="utf-8" />–&nbsp;including his own father, former premier Junichiro Koizumi <meta charset="utf-8" />–&nbsp;say he is too inexperienced to lead the country.

Keen surfer Koizumi "best personifies the idea of rejuvenation and change for the LDP" among the frontrunners, but LDP voters could think he "lacks stability", Uchiyama said.

The other six candidates include reformist Taro Kono, 61, and Toshimitsu Motegi, dubbed the "Trump whisperer" for his handling of the former US president in tough trade talks.

Also running are chief cabinet secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi and Takayuki Kobayashi, the only other candidate under 50 <meta charset="utf-8" />–&nbsp;seen as a wild card by some experts

Whoever emerges victorious on Friday will be formally elected by parliament on October 1.

The LDP has governed Japan almost uninterrupted for decades, with the main opposition parties rarely seen as viable alternatives.

But his rule was also tarnished by scandals, voter anger over rising prices and sliding poll ratings.

With inflation heading towards central bank targets, the OECD projected that the U.S. Federal Reserve's main interest rate would ease to 3.5% by the end of 2025 from 4.75%-5% currently and the European Central Bank would cut to 2.25% from 3.5% now.

U.S. growth was expected to slow from 2.6% this year to 1.6% in 2025, though interest rate cuts would help cushion the slowdown, the OECD said, trimming its 2025 estimate from a forecast of 1.8% in May.

The Chinese economy, the world's second-biggest, was seen slowing from 4.9% in 2024 to 4.5% in 2025 as government stimulus spending is offset by flagging consumer demand and a real estate rut.

The euro zone would help make up for slower growth in the two biggest economies next year, with the 20-nation bloc's growth forecast to nearly double from 0.7% growth this year to 1.3% as incomes grow faster than inflation.

The OECD hiked its outlook for the UK economy amid high wage growth, projecting the UK economy expanding by 1.1% in 2024 and 1.2% in 2025, up from May forecasts for 0.4% this year and 1% next year.
