Iran’s security chief Ali Larijani has announced that the constitutional transition process following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will begin today, state media reported. Larijani said a temporary leadership council comprising Iran’s president, the head of the judiciary and a jurist from the Guardian Council will be formed as soon as possible to manage the nation until a new supreme leader is chosen. The succession follows the unprecedented killing of Khamenei in recent U.S.–Israeli strikes, and marks the start of a sensitive period in Iran’s political landscape, with regional tensions already high.
