Following the confirmed death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s constitutional succession process has begun under the authority of the Assembly of Experts, a clerical body responsible for selecting the next Supreme Leader. A temporary leadership council has been formed to manage affairs until a permanent leader is elected. While speculation includes Khamenei’s son Mojtaba Khamenei and possible grandson figures, any successor must be approved by senior clerics in the Assembly of Experts, which traditionally vets candidates from the conservative religious establishment. Other leading contenders include senior clerics such as Alireza Arafi and members of the Guardian Council. The opaque process reflects both theocratic tradition and elite negotiation behind Iran’s most powerful office.
