Kolkata’s historic Chinatown is slowly disappearing. Once home to nearly 50,000 people in the 1960s, the Chinese community in Kolkata has now dwindled to around 2,000 residents. Many families who arrived as early as the 1840s have gradually left due to economic migration, identity challenges, and social pressures. Today, large portions of the community’s registered population are listed as untraceable or absent, raising concerns about the future of one of India’s oldest immigrant enclaves.
