Greenland's ancient predators caught in fishing battle
Greenland’s Avannaata municipal council approved a proposal to cull up to 1,000 Greenland sharks, with fishermen offered 300 Danish kroner for each shark heart. The plan aimed to address damage to fishing gear and fish taken from lines, but raised conservation concerns because Greenland sharks grow extremely slowly, can live for centuries and may take around 150 years to reach sexual maturity.
