This rare find, which has been named Musankwa Sanyatiensis, is the fourth dinosaur species found in Zimbabwe. The research regarding this find has been published in&nbsp;Acta Palaeontologica Polonica.

An international team comprising scientists from Stony Brook University in New York, the Natural History Museum of Zimbabwe and the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa and headed by the Natural History Museum's Prof Paul Barrett conducted the study in London.

Musankwa Sanyatiensis has emerged as an important discovery since it is the first dinosaur which has been named from the Mid-Zambezi Basin of northern Zimbabwe in the last 50 years.

The rocks which yielded this new specimen of dinosaur go back to the Late Triassic period, which was nearly 210 million years ago.

The remains of Musankwa Sanyatiensis included a single hind leg, including its thigh, shin, and ankle bones.

Assistant professor at Stony Brook University Dr. Kimberley "Kimi" Chapelle said, "Despite the limited fossil material, these bones possess unique features that distinguish them from those of other dinosaurs living at the same time."

In the evolutionary analysis, it was revealed that Musankwa Sanyatiensis was a member of the Sauropodomorpha, which is a group of long-necked, bipedal dinosaurs that were widespread in the Late Triassic.&nbsp;

This species, interestingly, appeared to be closely related to its contemporaries in Argentina and South Africa.&nbsp;

Musankwa Sanyatiensis was one of the largest dinosaurs of its era. It weighed around 390 kg and ate plants.

The discovery of the new species also emphasises on the region's untapped potential for further paleontological discoveries.&nbsp;

"The main reason for the underrepresentation of African dinosaur fossils is 'undersampling. Put simply, there have been fewer people looking for and unearthing dinosaurs in comparison with other regions of the world," said Barrett, as reported by phys.org.&nbsp;

"Over the last six years, many new fossil sites have been recorded in Zimbabwe, yielding a diverse array of prehistoric animals, including the first sub-Saharan mainland African phytosaurs (ancient crocodile-like reptiles), metoposaurid amphibians (giant armoured amphibians), lungfish, and other reptile remains," he added.

With the excavation of more fossil sites, the hope of making significant finds has increased which researchers believe will shed light on dinosaurs' early evolution and the ecosystems they lived in.

"Based on where it sits on the dinosaur family tree, Musanwka Sanyantiensis is the first dinosaur of its kind from Zimbabwe. It, therefore, highlights the potential of the region for further paleontological discoveries," Dr Chapelle said.

"Guy and I are overwhelmed by the hundreds of messages of well-wishers after Guy's run in with a wounded leopard earlier today. We are very fortunate that he was stabilized at Hippo Clinic by wonderful staff. He was then Airlifted from Buffalo Range by Ace Ambulance to Harare, then transferred to Milton Park Hospital for treatment," she added.

"He really is one lucky man," Hannah told MailOnline. "First he had the crocodile and now the leopard, he really is the cat with nine lives."

As for his numbers, Whittall had scored 2,203 runs in 47 Tests with a best of 203. He has also recorded 10 fifties and four hundreds in his career to go with 51 wickets with a best of 4/18 in an innings.

In ODIs, he scored 2,705 with 11 fifties to his name and a best of 83. In bowling department, he took 88 wickets with a best of 4/35 in an innings.

Zimbabwe coach Dave Houghton has resigned after the country's failure to reach next year's T20 World Cup, the national board said Wednesday.

"The Zimbabwe Cricket Board has accepted Dave Houghton's resignation from his position as head coach of the Zimbabwe senior men's national team with immediate effect," the board said in a statement.

"Houghton said he had 'lost the change room' after 18 months in charge and felt that a 'new voice' was needed to take the team forward," the statement added.

His resignation letter was sent just ahead of a board meeting Wednesday to look into the World Cup campaign. Zimbabwe lost to Namibia and Uganda at a recent qualifying tournament.

Zimbabwe have also just been beaten in a limited overs series against Ireland.

Houghton, 66, replaced Lalchand Rajput as Zimbabwe coach in June last year after six one-day and Twenty20 losses at home to Afghanistan.

The board said he would be assigned to a "new role within the organisation".

"Dave will always be a legend of our game and it is with regret that he felt the change room needed a new voice," said board chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani.

Parks agency spokesperson Farawo posted a video on social media site X, formerly Twitter, showing a young elephant struggling for its life after becoming stuck in mud in a water hole that had partly dried up in Hwange.

“The most affected elephants are the young, elderly and sick that can’t travel long distances to find water,” Farawo said. He said an average-sized elephant needs a daily water intake of about 200 liters (52 gallons).

Park rangers remove the tusks from dead elephants where they can for safekeeping and so the carcasses don’t attract poachers.

Hwange is home to around 45,000 elephants along with more than 100 other mammal species and 400 bird species.

Zimbabwe’s rainy season once started reliably in October and ran through to March. It has become erratic in recent years and conservationists have noticed longer, more severe dry spells.

“Our region will have significantly less rainfall, so the dry spell could return soon because of El Nino,” said Trevor Lane, director of The Bhejane Trust, a conservation group which assists Zimbabwe’s parks agency.

He said his organization has been pumping 1.5 million liters of water into Hwange’s waterholes daily from over 50 boreholes it manages in partnership with the parks agency. The 14,500-square-kilometer (5,600-square-mile) park, which doesn’t have a major river flowing through it, has just over 100 solar-powered boreholes that pump water for the animals.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness which spreads through contaminated food or water and can spread rapidly in areas with poor sanitation.&nbsp;The infection is often said to be mild or without symptoms, but in some cases can become severe and life-threatening.&nbsp;

The rise in confirmed and suspected cases in Zimbabwe also comes months after its neighbour South Africa suffered its worst outbreak of the diarrheal illness in 15 years.&nbsp;

Zimbabwe’s health ministry said that out of the 100 suspected deaths due to cholera, 30 of them were confirmed to be due to the water-borne disease after laboratory tests.&nbsp;

They have also recorded 905 confirmed cases of cholera with another 4,609 suspected cases.

The government has since imposed restrictions like limiting the number of people at funerals and a ban on some social gatherings in affected areas.&nbsp;

Large gatherings at funerals in the Manicaland and Masvingo provinces – which have been some of the most affected areas in the country– have been stopped, reported the Associated Press.&nbsp;

According to the guidelines issued by the government, no more than 50 people are allowed to attend funerals and people should avoid shaking hands and are not allowed to serve food at the funerals.&nbsp;

The country’s health ministry has identified Buhera, a southeastern district, as the epicentre of the current outbreak and said that the cases have now spread to 41 districts across Zimbabwe including the capital city of Harare.&nbsp;

The government has also said people should stop attending open markets, some social gatherings and outdoor church camps which typically lack sanitary infrastructure.&nbsp;

Zimbabwe records at least 100 suspected cholera deaths, imposes restrictions

Harpal Randhawa, an Indian mining tycoon and his son were among six who were killed in a private plane crash near a diamond mine in Zimbabwe. Media reports said the plane crashed in southwestern part of the country after a technical fault.

Harpal Randhawa was the owner of RioZim, a diversified mining company that produced gold and coal and also refined nickel and copper. According to media reports in Zimbabwe, the plane crashed in Zvamahande area of Mashava.

The plane was a Cessna 206 aircraft owned by RioZim. It was travelling from Harare to the Murowa diamond mine when the accident occurred. The Murowa diamond mine, near which the plane crashed, is partly owned by RioZim. All passengers and crew on board lost their lives in the accident.

State-owned daily newspaper The Herald reported citing police that four of the victims were foreigners and the other two were Zimbabweans.&nbsp;

The Zimbabwe Republic Police said that the crash occurred on September 29 between 7:30 am and 8 am, said a Press Trust of India report. The aircraft left Harare at 6 am for the mine. It crashed about 6 km from Mashava.

RioZim confirmed the crash and said it was working with relevant authorities to gather more information.

Names of the deceased are yet to be released by police but journalist and filmmaker Hopewell Chinono, who was a friend of Randhawa, confirmed his death.

"I am deeply saddened by the passing of Harpal Randhawa, the owner of RioZim who died today in a plane crash in Zvishavane. Five other people including his son, who was also a pilot but a passenger on this flight, also died in the crash," wrote Chinono on X.

"My thoughts are with his wife, family, friends and the RioZim community."

RioZim has said that a full statement will be issued "as soon as possible

Randhawa was the founder of USD 4 billion private equity firm GEM holdings.

Indian mining tycoon Harpal Randhawa killed in plane crash in Zimbabwe

At least nine miners were killed after a shaft in a Zimbabwean gold mine collapsed, an engineer at the site and the miners federation said Saturday.

"Four bodies have been recovered so far" and five others are still stuck under rubble, Henrietta Rushwaya, president of the Zimbabwe Miners Federation, told AFP.

Mine engineer Hussein Phiri confirmed to AFP that rescuers had located the bodies of the five miners stuck under the rubble.

"We can clearly see (five) bodies," he told AFP. "We are convinced all of them are dead."

"It is however difficult to retrieve the bodies because the mine is still collapsing. Each time we try is becoming a threat to our lives as well."

The accident occurred on Friday in Chegutu, about 120 kilometres (75 miles) west of the capital Harare, state television ZBC said, at the Bay Horse Mine.

The Southern African country's Minister of Mines, Soda Zhemu, who had come to oversee the rescue efforts, confirmed that 21 miners had escaped.&nbsp;

On Friday morning, "immediately after the collapse, 13 people managed to get out of the mine unharmed", the minister said.&nbsp;

"During the night, eight others were rescued."&nbsp;

<h2>- 'Heartbroken' -</h2>

The minister and the engineer also reported that three other miners were thought to be missing, but their whereabouts were unknown.&nbsp;

On Saturday afternoon, several hundred local residents watched in anguish as rescue workers tried to retrieve bodies from the mine.&nbsp;

Women wept as they waited for their husbands or sons to be pulled from the rubble.

"I'm heartbroken," said Vimbai Muchena, 38, whose son was trapped underground.

Johannes Nyautete, 33, was among the miners who escaped the mine.

"The mine started collapsing as soon as I landed on the underground tunnel which starts about 250 metres from the ground. It was around 10 am on Friday," he said.

"We then saw some of our colleagues rushing out of the tunnel and we escaped together.

"It was a traumatising experience."

He said the mine collapsed because there were no safety pillars.

Earlier reports from ZBC had suggested that as many as 18 people could be buried underground.

But Rushwaya said that "at the time of collapse, 13 people were pushed out, alive... and another eight were rescued alive."

The southern African nation has vast reserves of platinum, diamonds, gold, coal and copper. Due to the floundering economy, illegal mining is rife and often takes place under dangerous conditions.

Accidents are common. In February 2019, 24 miners died when an abandoned pit flooded after torrential rains in central Zimbabwe.

A CCC spokesperson said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, that the party rejected "any result hastily assembled without proper verification".

Zimbabwe’s president declared election winner again, opposition rejects result

Zimbabwe has extended voting in selected wards by a day after the late distribution of ballot papers delayed polling, according to a presidential decree issued late Wednesday.

Voters in the southern African country waited for hours to vote on Wednesday, saying they were hungry for change from economic chaos, but analysts were sceptical that the ruling ZANU-PF party would allow a credible election or any loosening of its stranglehold on power.

According to Zimbabwean law, voting is supposed to take place within one day.

The presidential notice listed 40 wards it said were affected by the delays. Although the named areas make up less than 1% of the country's 12,374 wards, they include 11 wards in the capital Harare, which has the highest number of registered voters.

According a notice from President Emmerson Mnangagwa announcing the extra day, the affected wards are in three of Zimbabwe’s 10 provinces - opposition stronghold Harare, Mashonaland Central, where the ruling party is traditionally dominant, and Manicaland, which is a key battleground.

Mnangagwa is seeking re-election after a first term during which runaway inflation, currency shortages and sky-high unemployment left many Zimbabweans reliant on dollar remittances from relatives abroad to make ends meet.

Mnangagwa, 80, took over when longtime strongman Robert Mugabe was toppled in a 2017 military coup. He faces 10 other candidates, including his main challenger, lawyer and pastor Nelson Chamisa, 45, of the Citizens Coalition for Change.

"I am expecting change. We are struggling and hungry," said Mabel Fambi, 67, who cares for five of her grandchildren because their parents cannot find jobs. She was waiting to cast her ballot in the Kuwadzana constituency in the capital Harare.

In Harare and the country's second biggest city Bulawayo, both opposition strongholds, a significant number of polling stations opened hours late, forcing voters to wait for most of the day.

"I see this delay as a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise me," said Fortune Sikireta, who had been waiting to vote since dawn at Maranatha Christian High School in the middle-income Harare suburb of Tynwald. By late afternoon he had yet to vote but was determined to see it through.

The electoral commission blamed the delays on late printing of ballot papers caused by court challenges, saying in a morning statement that only 23% of Harare's polling stations had opened on time.

Few or no delays were reported in other parts of the country.

Analysts said that, as in previous Zimbabwean elections, ZANU-PF, which has been in power for 43 years, had been using state institutions to ensure it would stay in power.

"The electoral playing field is heavily skewed in favour of the ruling party," said private firm Africa Risk Consulting.

<h2>LITTLE CHANGE SINCE MUGABE ERA</h2>

Zimbabwe's chances of resolving a debt crisis and obtaining World Bank and International Monetary Fund loans are at stake, as foreign lenders have said a free and fair election is a pre-condition for any meaningful talks.

"We want change. We want a younger president," said shoe mender Jonathan Darare, 47, who came out early to vote in Kuwadzana.

Polls had been scheduled to open at 7 a.m. (0500 GMT) and close at 7 p.m., with some 6.6 million people registered to vote in the nation of about 15 million. Parliamentary results are expected to trickle in on Thursday morning. The presidential result is expected later, though well ahead of a five-day deadline.

Chamisa was mobbed by supporters chanting his name as he arrived to vote in Kuwadzana. He predicted he would win but said the ruling party and the electoral commission would seek to deny him his victory.

"Funny games or no funny games, our victory is certain. We are going to continue to insist on a credible election and making sure we have a legitimate result out of this election," he said.

The government and the electoral commission have said the election would be free and fair.

Mnangagwa voted at Sherwood Primary School in the city of Kwekwe.

The Zimbabwe dollar has fallen by about 85% since the start of 2023 and inflation has reached triple digits, pushing people deeper into poverty in a nation where only 30% hold formal jobs.

"Five years into Mnangagwa's rule, conditions have not changed much from the Mugabe era," said Africa Risk Consulting.

The Economist Intelligence Unit predicted Mnangagwa and ZANU-PF would win by a narrower margin and not by fair means, raising the risk of disputes over the results and public protests.

To win the presidency, a candidate must get more than 50% of the vote. If there is no outright winner, a run-off between the top two candidates will be held on Oct. 2.

Parliamentary and local council candidates only need a simple majority of votes cast.

Zimbabwe sets extra day of voting in selected wards after delays

West Indies and Zimbabwe notched up victories in their respective opening Cricket World Cup Group A qualifiers over the United States and Nepal on Sunday. Two-time world champions West Indies recovered from the early loss of openers Brandon King and Kyle Mayers as four players hit half-centuries as they made 297 all out off 49.3 overs.

Earlier in the day, unbeaten centuries by skipper Craig Ervine and Sean Williams in a 164-run partnership guided Zimbabwe to an eight-wicket win over Nepal.

Chasing an imposing total of 290, Ervine hit a 128-ball 121 featuring 15 fours and a six, while Williams struck 102 off 70 balls as Zimbabwe reached 291 for the loss of two wickets with 35 balls remaining.

Openers Kushal Bhurtel and Aasif Sheikh hit 99 and 66 respectively to help Nepal to 290 for eight wickets off their 50 overs at the Harare Sports Club.
