The European Union leaders held emergency talks in Brussels, marking the first summit of 27 nations since the heated conversation happened last week between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.&nbsp;
The leaders met to discuss &euro;800bn plan to boost military capacity.&nbsp;
Zelensky also held a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron on the sidelines of the European Council meeting.&nbsp;
"I thanked Emmanuel for his clear and principled stance in support of Ukraine and the need for new, more substantial steps to protect our entire Europe&mdash;our peoples, our institutions, and our European way of life," he said.&nbsp;
The two leaders discussed their upcoming meeting which is scheduled for March 11 at the level of military representatives of the countries willing to put in greater efforts to ensure reliable security in the context of ending this war.
"We have an absolutely clear shared vision that real and lasting peace is possible through cooperation between Ukraine, all of Europe, and the United States. The war must end as soon as possible," he added.&nbsp;

&ldquo;Although possible peace plans are being initially sketched out, it is not possible yet to say that there is a coherent peace plan,&rdquo; he said.
Russia is continuing its &ldquo;special military operation&rdquo; in Ukraine &ldquo;in order to achieve the aims that it had from the start,&rdquo; Peskov said.

Despite grandiose proclamations of support, the unpalatable truth is glaring: Europe lacks the firepower or the financial wherewithal to replace the U.S. While the UK threw in a $2 billion financing deal for air defence missiles, it&rsquo;s a paltry pittance in the ocean compared to what Washington has withheld. France and Britain are proposing a partial one-month truce between Russia and Ukraine that would not cover ground fighting. It is naive to even contemplate that Russia would pause its aerial attacks at a time when Ukraine is almost bereft of air defence missiles (most of them were supplied by the U.S). It&rsquo;s a desperate gambit to freeze the war before Ukraine collapses further.
