Mineral deal put on hold after Zelensky spars with Trump

Following the defence summit in London on Sunday (Mar 2), British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a &pound;1.6 billion ($2 billion) package for air missiles to Ukraine. A day earlier, he announced a &pound;2.2 billion loan to Ukraine.
Starmer said that this will allow Ukraine "to buy more than 5000 air defence missiles, which will be made in Belfast, creating jobs in our brilliant defence sector."
"This will be vital for protecting critical infrastructure now and strengthen Ukraine in securing the peace when it comes because we have to learn from the mistakes of the past. We cannot accept a weak deal like Minsk, which Russia can breach with ease," he said.

<h2>Starmer hints UK-led plan was discussed with Trump</h2>
"I spoke to President Trump last night," said Starmer. "I&rsquo;m not going to go through the details of that conversation, but I would not be taking this step down this road if I didn&rsquo;t think it was something that would yield a positive outcome in terms of ensuring that we move together&mdash;Ukraine, Europe, the UK and the US&mdash;together towards a lasting peace."
<h2>Agreement needs US backing</h2>
"We will go further develop a coalition of the willing to defend a deal in Ukraine and to guarantee the peace," said Starmer. "Not every nation will feel able to contribute, but that can&rsquo;t mean that we sit back."
He added that "those willing will intensify planning now with real urgency. The UK is prepared to back this with boots on the ground and planes in the air, together with others."
"Europe must do the heavy lifting," he said.
However, the agreement needs US backing, he said, adding, "Let me clear, we agree with Trump on the urgent need for a durable peace. Now we need to deliver together."

Starmer rejected a suggestion that the US is now an "unreliable ally". He said that it has been a "reliable ally for many, many decades, and continues to be".

The UK PM said that guarantees are needed to avoid further conflict.
"I do not want conflict in Ukraine, in Europe, and certainly not in the United Kingdom. I want stability in the United Kingdom," he said.
"The way to ensure that stability is to ensure that we are able to defend a deal in Ukraine, because the one thing our history tells us is that if there is conflict in Europe, it will wash up on our shores."
Starmer said that any final deal "will have to involve Russia" but should not dictate the guarantees that could be offered to Ukraine, hinting at Russia's history of breaches in the past.

Denmark defence committee's chair further said that the US administration &ldquo;has been misled by a false narrative that Zelensky is a bad guy who is trying to exploit the US and that Europe are bad guys &hellip; and they want to show they are fed up with that.&rdquo;
He warned that any peace deal without security guarantees for Ukraine is not even worth the value of the paper that it's written on as &ldquo;Russian leaders regularly break their promises, break their treaties, break agreements.&rdquo;

<h2>EU countries 'not doing their part'</h2>
Jarlov called out some EU countries for not paying enough in their defence spending for Ukraine and "not doing their part".&nbsp;
"There is no comparison between the economies of Europe and Russia. It&rsquo;s like 15 times bigger. So if Europe stands up and helps Ukraine, there will only be one outcome, and that will be a Ukrainian victory," he said.
Jarlov added that if "we are hesitant like we have been so far", then the Americans are going to stop helping because they think it&rsquo;s too expensive, and then Ukraine will lose, and that "will be a very, very bad outcome for Europe."
Currently, the European leaders are holding a crucial defence summit in London, hosted by UK PM Keir Starmer.
Jarlov stressed that the EU leaders have to "stop talking, stop tweeting" and have to "start paying and they have to send the arms to Ukraine right now."

As Zelensky and Trump were having a smooth discussion - Vance came into the picture and offered a "diplomatic solution" for the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.&nbsp;
"For four years, the United States of America had a president who stood up at press conferences and talked tough about Vladimir Putin, and then Putin invaded Ukraine and destroyed a significant chunk of the country. The path to peace and the path to prosperity is, maybe, engaging in diplomacy," Vance said.&nbsp;
"From 2014 till 2022, the situation was the same. People have been dying on the contact line. Nobody stopped him. You know that we had conversations with him, a lot of conversations.... "You have to find a way, dear Volodymyr, to restore your relationship with Donald Trump and the American administration," Rutte said.&nbsp;
"Not at liberty to say what was disclosed", Rutte further said. However, he shared that he told Zelensky "we have to respect" what Trump has done for Ukraine so far.&nbsp;

Right after the meeting with Trump on Friday, Zelensky immediately held a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron, followed by a call with the NATO chief.&nbsp;
