The joint declaration also called on for an "urgent need" to strengthen and reform the multilateral system that includes organisations such as the UN, WTO,&nbsp;IMF, among others.&nbsp;

The statement also reaffirmed the need for a "comprehensive" reform of the UN, including the Security Council, in order to make it more "representative, effective, and efficient", and to increase the representation of democratic countries so that they can adequately respond to global challenge.

The BRICS leaders also agreed that a military solution to the conflict in Syria is not possible. They also reiterated their commitment to implement Paris climate agreement.&nbsp;

The 20-page document also expressed serious concern over persistent threats to international peace and security and committed to working for achieving lasting peace for everyone.

Thousands of pro-democracy protesters took to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/china-condemns-attack-on-hong-kong-official-in-london-asks-local-police-to-continue-investigation-262218">Hong Kong's</a> streets Friday, defying a warning by Chinese President Xi Jinping, as a campaign of mass disruption extended into a fifth straight day.

Black-clad protesters also occupied university campuses, while office workers endured another day of transport chaos with suspensions on the vandalised train network and roads blocked by barricades.

Hong Kong has seen relentless protests since June as many in the city of 7.5 million people have vented fury at eroding freedoms under Chinese rule.

Those protests had been mainly in the evenings and on weekends, allowing the international financial hub to still function relatively smoothly during the week albeit with its economy dragged into recession.&nbsp;

With China offering no concessions, protesters switched tactics on Monday when they launched a "blossom everywhere" campaign to cause as much disruption as possible across Hong Kong and overwhelm the police force.

Their actions through the week have caused chaos across Hong Kon and been accompanied by intensifying violence from both sides -- two people have died in a week in incidents linked to the protests.

The five-day 'strike' has also seen major universities become a hub for the protesters - the first time a movement characterised by its fluidity and unpredictability has coagulated in fixed locations.

Violence from both sides has also escalated, and tensions have spilt out overseas.

On Thursday night Hong Kong Justice Secretary Teresa Cheng fell in London after being surrounded by pro-democracy protesters, in the most physical confrontation involving a member of the cabinet since the unrest began.&nbsp;

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam on Friday condemned the incident, describing it as a "barbaric attack".&nbsp;

Cheng walked away from the confrontation without any visible signs of injury.&nbsp;

Stand with Hong Kong

On Friday a "Lunch With You" event saw thousands of mainly office workers take to the city's streets, many chanting "Stand with Hong Kong" and raising an open hand with five fingers splayed.

It is a reference to the five demands of the protest movement, which include the right to freely elect <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/hong-kong-condemns-london-attack-on-justice-secretary-as-protests-continue-262184">Hong Kong's leaders</a>, as well as an independent inquiry into alleged police brutality.

"The government did not respond even when two million residents marched peacefully," a 25-year-old office worker who gave her surname as Wong said in the city's Central district, in reference to huge rallies that were a feature of the start of the movement.

"Now when the police are abusing their power the government... only thinks protesters are the problem."

The unrest was triggered by opposition to Hong Kong's government plan to introduce a law allowing the extradition of criminal suspects to mainland China.

The government belatedly withdrew the bill months into the unrest, but by then it had morphed into a much wider campaign for democratic freedoms and against the police.&nbsp;

Warnings from China

Chinese <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/hong-kong-violence-threatens-one-country-two-systems-xi-jinping-262146">President Xi</a> on Thursday backed Lam and the police force while warning the protest movement was threatening the "one country, two systems" principle governing the semi-autonomous city.

Xi said "stopping violence and controlling chaos" was the top priority.

With the crisis deepening by the week, fears have grown that Xi's patience will run out and Chinese troops will be deployed into to Hong Kong.

The Global Times, one of the powerful arms of the Chinese state media, on Thursday fuelled tensions with a tweet reporting that a curfew was imminent.

The Global Times quickly withdrew the tweet and the Hong Kong's government denied a curfew was planned.

But Chinese state media continued to pile on the pressure on Friday, calling for tougher action from the government and indicating a curfew was still on the cards.

"While it remains to be seen whether a curfew will be introduced, tougher action is undoubtedly called for," the China Daily, an English-language newspaper, said in an editorial.&nbsp;

Chinese media has repeatedly seized on violence from the protesters as the justification of a crackdown.

A 70-year-old man died on Thursday from injuries sustained a day earlier when he was hit by a brick during clashes between protesters and people angry with them.

Police on Friday said they had opened a murder case into the man's death.

On Monday a man arguing with protesters was set on fire by a black-clad masked person, with that incident caught on camera and posted online.

On the same day, a police officer shot an unarmed protester at close range.&nbsp;

Thousands in Hong Kong defy China's Xi with pro-democracy rallies

On the sidelines of BRICS summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping has invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for another visit to China next year.&nbsp;

"2020 will be here soon, and I hope China-India relations will achieve new and greater development in the new year," said Chinese president in a statement, reports Reuters. "I welcome you to come to China for another meeting next year."

This development comes after President Jinping met Modi last month in Chennai in India for the second <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/chinese-president-xi-jinping-wraps-up-chennai-visit-leaves-for-nepal-255459">informal summit</a>. Both India and China sought to strengthen ties during Jinping's visit, which was a follow-up of Modi's informal visit to Wuhan in China in 2018.

Beijing 'firmly supports' Hong Kong's government, police, says Chinese President Xi Jinping

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday left for the 11th BRICS Summit that will take place in Brazil tomorrow.&nbsp;

On the sidelines of the BRICS summit, the prime minister will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin, Brazilian President Jair Messias Bolsonaro and Chinese President Xi Jinping.&nbsp;

The prime minister will be in Brazil from November 13-14 for the 11th BRICS summit during which New Delhi's focus will be on the issue of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/pm-modi-to-focus-on-reformed-multilateralism-at-11th-brics-summit-in-brazil-261471">multilateralism and counter-terror</a>.

Ahead of the visit, Secretary Economic Relations T S Tirumurt said, "Prime Minister has articulated his vision for reformed multilateralism and has underlined the importance of strengthening and reforming the multilateral system itself. He has specifically underlined that when we call for multilateralism, we should not call to reinforce the status-quo of multilateralism but seek to reform multilateralism itself since this is what BRICS had originally set out to do".

Cooperation on the counter-terror front has been another key focus of New Delhi, with Secretary ER saying, India has "worked closely within BRICS to not only take a strong stand against terrorism but also work to bring about focused consultations on specific aspects related to terrorism".

In his departure statement, he said that the BRICS Summit will provide the opportunity to hold "useful bilateral interactions" with leaders of other BRICS countries.

"I look forward to exchanging views with other BRICS leaders with the aim to further strengthen intra-BRICS cooperation particularly on the theme of the Summit "Economic growth for an innovative future".

During the Summit, the five major economies of the World will aim to significantly strengthen their cooperation in science, technology, and innovation; enhance cooperation on digital economy and build mechanisms for counter-terrorism cooperation within the BRICS framework," Modi said in the statement.

Taking about his bilateral meeting with Bolsonaro, Modi said that he will discuss ways to enhance the strategic partnership between India and Brazil. "Brazil and India share close and ever-expanding bilateral relations, including in the spheres of defense, security, trade, agriculture, energy, and space. Close cooperation between the two countries in multilateral forums has been a significant aspect of our strategic relationship," Modi said.&nbsp;

The prime minister will address the BRICS Business Forum and will interact with members of BRICS Business Council and New Development Bank.

BRICS brings together five major world economies - Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa - which comprise 42 per cent of the world population, contribute to 23 percent of global Gross Domestic Product and around 17 percent of the share in world trade.

President Xi Jinping on Tuesday pledged to further open <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-china-face-off-over-south-china-sea-at-asean-summit-259920">China's economy</a>, declaring the world must "knock down walls" as he opened an annual trade fair in Shanghai.

Xi addressed an audience including French President Emmanuel Macron at the import exhibition, staged annually by China to show its willingness to free up its vast domestic markets in the face of criticism that they are too cosseted by Beijing.

The world community must "continue to knock down walls instead of building walls, resolutely oppose protectionism and unilateralism, (and) continuously reduce trade barriers", Xi said.

A report this year by state attorneys general said those rollbacks could amount to a boost in US carbon emissions of more than 200 million tonnes a year by 2025.

Alden Meyer, director of policy at the Union of Concerned Scientists, said states, cities and businesses representing more than half of the US gross domestic product and population remained committed to the Paris Agreement's goals.

"Unlike the president, these leaders understand that reducing emissions creates jobs and protects local communities, while it is inaction on climate that poses the real threat to prosperity,” he said.

Until its formal exit, the United States will continue to participate in negotiations over technical aspects of the agreement, represented by career State Department officials.

Xi said Lam has "done a lot of hard work" and strived to stabilise the situation in Hong Kong, according to a Xinhua readout of their meeting.

"Xi voiced the central government's high degree of trust in Lam and full acknowledgement of the work of her and her governance team," the state news agency said.

"Ending violence and chaos and restoring order remain the most important task for Hong Kong at present," Xi said.

Xi also called for "effective efforts" to be made in improving people's lives and having dialogue with all sectors of society.

The Chinese Communist Party agreed at a leadership meeting last week to "improve" the way Hong Kong's chief executive and key officials are appointed and removed, but it provided no other details.

Lam was chosen in 2017 by a 1,200-strong committee stacked with Beijing supporters, a system that ensures Hong Kong's leader remains loyal the central government but one that saddles the position with a pronounced democratic deficit.

Tam Yiu-chung, Hong Kong's sole representative to China’s top lawmaking body, said the meeting between Xi and Lam would help allay the seething rumours about Beijing seeking to replace her.

"Xi must be very busy in Shanghai, where there were so many countries' leaders he had to meet, but he still made time for Lam, so the message of his care is clear," Tam said.

"Xi gave Lam an appropriate recognition but there isn't much praise in the report because after all the situations are yet to calm," Tam added.

Rights group Amnesty International has urged <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/hong-kong-protest-leader-left-bloodied-in-street-attack-256296">Hong Kong authorities</a> to urgently investigate a bloody attack on the leader of one of the biggest pro-democracy groups in the Chinese-ruled city, ahead of a march planned for the weekend.

It was the second such attack on Jimmy Sham, head of the Civil Human Rights Front, since protests escalated in the Asian financial hub in mid-June and which, photographs on social media showed, left him in a pool of blood on the street.

"The authorities must promptly conduct an investigation into this horrifying attack...send a clear message that targeting activists will have consequences," said Joshua Rosenzweig, head of Amnesty’s East Asia regional office.

"Anything less would send a chilling signal that such attacks are tolerated by the authorities," he said in a statement on Wednesday.

As many as five masked men wearing black and believed to be of non-Chinese origin had attacked Sham with hammers and knives for more than 10 seconds in the gritty Mong Kok district on the Kowloon peninsula, police said late on Wednesday.

Police condemned what they called a planned attack and vowed to investigate. Sham was in stable condition, a government spokesman said.

His group, which organised the million-strong marches in June, plans a march on Sunday in the neighbouring district of Kowloon, but authorities have not yet confirmed it will be permitted.

"It is not hard to link this incident to a spreading political terror in order to threaten and inhibit the legitimate exercise of natural and legal rights," the group said in a statement.

Speaking at the city's legislature on Thursday, nearly a dozen pro-democracy lawmakers condemned the attack on Sham and said they would continue to protest.

"This very vicious attack took place practically on the eve of yet another massive protest in Hong Kong on Sunday," said Claudia Mo.

"We can’t help feeling that this entire thing is part of a plan to shed blood at Hong Kong’s peaceful protests."

Mo was one of several lawmakers whom security officials escorted out of a question-and-answer session with Chief Executive Carrie Lam on Thursday after they heckled her for the second day in a row.

As many as five masked men wearing black and believed to be of non-Chinese origin had attacked Sham with hammers and knives for more than 10 seconds in the gritty Mong Kok district on the Kowloon peninsula, police said late on Wednesday. Police condemned what they called a planned attack and vowed to investigate. Sham was in stable condition, a government spokesman said. His group, which organised the million-strong marches in June, plans a march on Sunday in the neighbouring district of Kowloon, but authorities have not yet confirmed it will be permitted. "It is not hard to link this incident to a spreading political terror in order to threaten and inhibit the legitimate exercise of natural and legal rights," the group said in a statement. Speaking at the city's legislature on Thursday, nearly a dozen pro-democracy lawmakers condemned the attack on Sham and said they would continue to protest. "This very vicious attack took place practically on the eve of yet another massive protest in Hong Kong on Sunday," said Claudia Mo. "We can’t help feeling that this entire thing is part of a plan to shed blood at Hong Kong’s peaceful protests." Mo was one of several lawmakers whom security officials escorted out of a question-and-answer session with Chief Executive Carrie Lam on Thursday after they heckled her for the second day in a row. Hong Kong has been roiled by more than four months of sometimes violent anti-government protests in its worst crisis in decades, posing the biggest popular challenge to Chinese President Xi Jinping since he came to power in 2012. What began as opposition to a now-withdrawn extradition bill has evolved into a pro-democracy movement fanned by fears that China is stifling freedoms guaranteed by a "one country, two systems" formula adopted when Britain returned Hong Kong to China in 1997. No olive branch In an annual policy address on Wednesday, the Beijing-backed Lam had offered no direct olive branch to pro-democracy protesters, hoping instead to ease resentment by building more public housing. The densely populated former British colony has one of the world's most expensive real estate markets and the inability of many young people to get a place of their own has added fuel to the pro-democracy protests. Unveiling one of the city's boldest housing proposals in years, Lam vowed to take back large tracts of land held by a handful of powerful developers and create public housing. "We are determined to create homeownership opportunities for people of different income groups such that they will happily make Hong Kong their home," Lam said. At a news conference, Lam rejected two of the protesters' five demands - amnesty for those charged and universal suffrage - calling the first illegal and the second beyond her power as chief executive. In a statement after her briefing, Civil Human Rights Front in a statement called for Lam to resign, although she has rejected such calls for months. "We urge Carrie Lam to stop destroying Hong Kong, respond to the five major demands, and step down," the group said.
