Japan has selected the kanji character for "tax" as its word of the year, reflecting a rising public apprehension about the cost of living and impending tax hikes.

The character, read as zei or mitsugi, was revealed at the Kiyomizu Buddhist temple in Kyoto by head priest Seihan Mori. Garnering 5,797 votes out of 147,878, it resonated with the public's sentiments, as reported by the Japan Kanji Aptitude Testing Foundation, organisers of the annual contest since 1995.

<h2>Second and third place contenders</h2>

Securing the second spot was sho/atsui, the character for "hot", symbolising concerns about Japan's scorching summer and the climate emergency.

The character for "war" (ikusa/tatakau) came in third, drawing attention to conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.

Despite the government's recent tax cuts, unease prevails over anticipated tax hikes, particularly to fund increased defence spending in response to regional military concerns. A new invoicing system adds to concerns for freelancers and self-employed people facing potential higher tax rates.

As the year of the rabbit comes to a close, a political storm brews over allegations of undisclosed payments within Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's party, sparking accusations of tax evasion. However, this scandal's impact on the word-of-the-year selection remains minimal.

The top 10 characters for 2023 also featured "zo/masu" or "increase," highlighting the struggle with rising prices outpacing wage growth.

The Oxford University Press has chosen "Rizz" as the word of the year. What is rizz and do you have it?

Gravitas: What is Rizz and do you have it?

Authentic is the "word of the year" 2023, as per America's oldest dictionary, Merriam-Webster.

Driven by high traffic of stories and conversations around Artificial Intelligence, celebrity culture, identity and social media, the word 'Authentic' topped the charts.

<h2>What does 'authentic' mean?</h2>

As per Merriam-Webster, 'authentic' is the "term for something we're thinking about, writing about, aspiring to, and judging more than ever."

The dictionary describes authentic as a word with manifold meanings including "not false or imitation," a synonym of real and actual; and also "true to one's own personality, spirit, or character."

However, a blog post announcing the word of the year also says that while authenticity is a "desirable quality", the word is "hard to define and subject to debate", these two reasons it said, "sends many people to the dictionary."

<h2>Why were people searching for 'authentic'?</h2>

In America, as per the US' oldest dictionary, the rise of artificial intelligence and its impact in terms of the increasingly common deep fake videos, actors' contracts, academic honesty, and a vast number of other topics drove the searches.&nbsp;

As "the line between 'real' and 'fake' has become increasingly blurred," brands, celebrities and social media influencers all aspire to be 'authentic', it says.

Pushing the search were celebrities like Taylor Swift and Elon Musk.

<h2>What other words were popular?</h2>

Other contenders for 'Word of the Year' included 'deepfake' — "an image or recording that has been convincingly altered and manipulated to misrepresent someone as doing or saying something that was not actually done or said."

Also on the list was "indict" thanks to the indictment of former US President Donald Trump in four separate cases.

'Rizz' a trending internet-driven slang was one of the major runner-ups. The word that means "romantic appeal or charm" was added to the dictionary in September. 'Coronation' thanks to British King Charles III taking over as monarch also saw a spike. Furthermore, as record-high temperatures plagued the world, 'dystopian' also topped the search.

Merriam-Webster selects 'authentic' as word of the year 2023

Artificial Intelligence has been in the spotlight throughout 2023. AI made headlines and was the focus of more and more conversations. Thanks to this rising visibility, the term 'Artificial Intelligence' has been named the "word of the year" by Collins Dictionary.

<h2>Conversations and more</h2>

As per Collins Dictionary, the use of AI, a term that describes "the modelling of human mental functions by computer programs", has quadrupled this year.

Alex Beecroft, the director of Collins Dictionary, as quoted by BBC, said that AI had been "the talking point of 2023".

"We know that AI has been a big focus this year in the way that it has developed and has quickly become as ubiquitous and embedded in our lives as email, streaming or any other once futuristic, now everyday technology," he added.

<h2>How AI made the conversations</h2>

Artificial Intelligence was all over the board; from suggesting recipes with leftover pantry ingredients to acting as a therapist...&nbsp;AI did it all.

Not only that, it also was a source of fear and anxiety for many. This was not limited to the usual reports of 'will computers take over humans', but also included warnings that artificial intelligence can be used to make chemical and biological weapons.

In March, more than 1,100 notable signatories, including Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and Tristan Harris of the Center for Humane Technology, signed an open letter calling on "all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4." They reasoned that as AI systems become more "human-competitive" at general tasks, humans need to ask, "Should we risk loss of control of our civilization?".&nbsp;

There were also concerns about copyrights, as AI "used" work made by artists to "create" its own art. AI-generated deepfakes were also a cause of concern, with reports of the technology being used for propaganda.

Artificial Intelligence dominates conversations in 2023, named 'Word of the Year' by Collins Dictionary

Moonlighting, situationship, goblin mode: Here’s a look at trending words of 2022

The year's first Oxford term selected by popular voting has been unveiled. "Goblin mode," the winning term, is slang for behaviour that is "unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy." It was one of the three options that Oxford lexicographers chose. The phrase won by a wide margin with 318,956 votes, or 93 per cent&nbsp;of the total, showing that thousands of people were able to break out of goblin mode to cast their votes.

<h2>What does 'Goblin mode' mean?</h2>

It is a slang term frequently used in expressions like "I'm in goblin mode" or "to go goblin mode," according to Oxford University Press, which publishes the Oxford English Dictionary.

It is defined as "a form of behaviour that is unrepentantly self-indulgent, sluggish, slovenly, or selfish, generally in a way that contradicts societal standards or expectations."

The phrase first appeared online in 2009, but went viral this year due to a made-up scandal involving actress and model Julia Fox and a well-liked Reddit post describing a person acting goofily.

The phrase got bigger and bigger as individuals realised they did not want to return to the way life was before Covid limitations loosened.

It sparked a campaign to choose it as the Oxford Word of the Year, with the PC Gamer magazine urging readers to "put aside our petty disputes and vote for 'goblin mode' over 'metaverse' because 'goblin mode rules'."

Given that many of us occasionally experience goblin-like feelings, it may be difficult to challenge such rationale.

In a year that organisers dubbed "more divided than ever," the public has for the first time selected the word of the year.

With 14,484 votes, metaverse came in second, followed by #IStandWith with 8,639 votes.

Susie Dent, a television language specialist, declared her support for #IStandWith.

Vax was the word of the year before, reflecting the interest in vaccinations that had grown since the introduction of a coronavirus vaccine.

'Goblin mode': What does the Oxford word of the year 2022 mean?

Merriam-Webster has declared that Gaslighting is the word of the year for 2022. Searches for the term have gone up by 1,740% this year. So what does Gaslighting mean?

Gravitas: Gaslighting is the word of the year

We are living in an age of misinformation. The sources of information are many, but the trustworthy ones are few. In this day and age of "fake news", "conspiracy theories", "deepfakes" and "trolls", the Merriam-Webster word of the year 2022 is "gaslighting".

The word is by no means new, but this year saw an ever-increasing interest in it, with over 1740 per cent increase in instances of people looking for its meaning.

What does 'Gaslighting' mean?

As per Merriam-Webster, there are two definitions of the word, but both of them have to do everything with disorientation, mistrust, manipulation and selfish motives.

One way to describe it is an "act or practice of grossly misleading someone, especially for one’s own advantage."

'Gaslighting' is Merriam-Webster dictionary's word of the year 2022. Here's what it means

First surfaced in the mid-1800s, Dictionary.com chooses ‘allyship’ as ‘word of the year’ for 2021. This old noun, which has been made new, was added just last month, said John Kelly, associate director, content and education, Dictionary.com. &nbsp;

Dictionary.com, which has over 70 million monthly users, took the unusual step of anointing a word, which was added recently. &nbsp;

“It might be a surprising choice for some. In the past few decades, the term has evolved to take on a more nuanced and specific meaning. It is continuing to evolve and we saw that in many ways,” Kelly said. &nbsp;

As per the site, allyship means the role of a person, who advocates for inclusion of a “marginalised or politicised group” in solidarity but not as a member, and the more traditional relationship of “persons, groups or nations associating and cooperating with one another for a common cause or purpose”. &nbsp;

“This year, we saw a lot of businesses and organisations very prominently, publicly, beginning efforts to promote diversity, equity and inclusion. Allyship is tied to that. In the classroom, there is a flashpoint around the term ‘critical race theory’. Allyship connects with this as well,” Kelly said. &nbsp;

Vax, which is short for a vaccine, has been chosen as the word of the year by lexicographers at the Oxford English Dictionary. The use of the word vaccine surged ever since COVID-19 vaccination campaign has started in different parts of world. As per a statement by Oxford, when lexicographers began digging into English language corpus data it quickly became apparent that vax was a "particularly striking term". The word has generated numerous derivatives that can now be seen in a wide range of informal contexts, from vax sites and vax cards to getting vaxxed and being fully vaxxed. The dictionary's editors wrote, "For the first time this year our report also examines how the language of vaccines has influenced languages other than English, looking at a selection of the most-spoken languages across the globe." The use of the word pandemic has also increased by more than 57,000 per cent this year. Also read | 'Lockdown' is Collins Dictionary Word of the Year in 2020 "We examine the data-based evidence of vaccine-related changes to the lexicon, including its history, neologisms, and regional variations. For the first time this year our report also examines how the language of vaccines has influenced languages other than English, looking at a selection of the most-spoken languages across the globe," said Oxford in a statement. Earlier in 2020, Lockdown was named expression of the year by both Collins and Oxford Dictionary. In 2019, there were 4,000 recorded examples of the lockdown being utilised. In 2020, this had taken off to in excess of a fourth of 1,000,000. The pandemic has affected the daily use of language in a massive manner, as a result, six of Collins' 10 words of the year in 2020 are related to the global health crisis. "Coronavirus", "social distancing", "self-isolate" and "furlough" as well as "lockdown" and "key worker" were included in the long list of 10 words of the year.

'Particularly striking term': 'Vax' declared as Oxford Dictionary's word of the year in 2021

It's been a year of many firsts, and to add to the list, for the first time ever&nbsp;Oxford English Dictionary has been unable to choose one 'word of the year'.&nbsp;

Every year, the Oxford English Dictionary chooses a 'word of the year' on the basis of the frequency of the usage of the word. However, 2020 is the first time the language experts have failed to choose a single word this year due to the extensive list of words used and searched.

'It quickly became apparent that 2020 is not a year that could neatly be accommodated in one single 'word of the year,' the officials of&nbsp;Oxford English Dictionary said.

Words that have been used the most this year started with "Bushfire" in January after Australian wildfire which affected millions of people and wildlife.

It quickly shifted to "acquittal"&nbsp; in February when the outgoing US President &nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>'s impeachment trial ended. However, as coronavirus took over the world, the language world was also&nbsp;taken over by pandemic-related words such as "COVID-19", "lockdown", "social distancing" and "reopening".&nbsp;

The focus again shifted to raising voices against the police brutality inflicted upon the African-American community, and the most searched word exploded with&nbsp;"Black Lives Matter" and "BIPOC", followed by Trump clan's disdain over "cancel culture".

The month of August saw a rise in the words&nbsp;"Mail-in"&nbsp;following Trump's&nbsp;blast about irregularities in the&nbsp;mail-in voting system for <a href="https://www.wionews.com/us-election">US elections</a>&nbsp;2020&nbsp;and "Belarusian"&nbsp;following the controversy around the&nbsp;Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

The month of October flagged the word&nbsp;"superspreader"&nbsp;after Trump&nbsp;was blamed for hosting a superspreader event in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/the-white-house">White House</a>.

The report was titled 'Words of an Unprecedented Year' and stated that there was a huge spike in the number of adjectives used this year.

"Though what was genuinely unprecedented this year was the hyper-speed at which the English-speaking world amassed a new collective vocabulary relating to the coronavirus, and how quickly it became, in many instances, a core part of the language," the report read.

OED had decided "climate emergency" as word of the year for 2019 and "toxic" for 2018.

Non-binary "They" becomes 2019 Word of The Year: Merriam-Webster

'Justice'&nbsp;is what most people sought on Merriam-Webster, among the world's most popular dictionaries, as the US&nbsp;publisher named that principle of being fair as the Word of the Year for 2018.

Users looked up the word 74 percent more often than in 2017, said spokeswoman Meghan Lunghi for the website, which claims to be 'America's most trusted dictionary.'

The surge was prompted by specific uses of the word such as 'obstruction of justice,'&nbsp;after US&nbsp;President Donald Trump tweeted in August that Attorney General Jeff Sessions should stop Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 election, the company said in a statement.

"It's often familiar words for abstract concepts that are among the most looked up words," said Emily Brewster, associate editor for Merriam-Webster, in the statement. "When common words like justice are used in contexts that are very specific, technical, or legal, people look them up in the dictionary for the detail and nuance that a definition can provide."

'Justice'&nbsp;joined Dictionary.com's 'misinformation'&nbsp;and the Oxford English Dictionary's 'toxic'&nbsp;as top words of the year.&nbsp;
