March 8 - that one day in the calendar when suddenly all I see around me is grand speeches, bold hashtags, and big offers by beauty brands wrapped in pink themes.&nbsp;
But while I write this sitting in India's capital (often called rape capital), I ask myself - what exactly are we celebrating? The tokenism of representation? The performative activism that fades once the day is over? Or simply our survival in a world that still refuses to grant us safety, respect, and dignity?

Being a woman in India - and that too in Delhi - the most thrilling thing I can do is walk alone at night and see if I escape a rape attempt.&nbsp;
As per India's National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), more than 31,000 women were raped in 2022, a figure that has remained alarmingly consistent since the 2012 reforms.
The same data claims that a woman is raped every 20 minutes in India. But who's counting when the conviction rate is barely 27%? This simply means that if a woman gets raped, there's a 73% chance the abuser will walk free.&nbsp;
And this is just the recorded data. There must be hundreds (if not thousands) of such cases that never made it to the government records.&nbsp;

On August 9, 2024&mdash;when India was busy preparing to celebrate its 78th Independence Day&mdash;a female doctor was brutally raped and killed in West Bengal's Kolkata. The media termed the case "Nirbhaya 2.0," making a comparison to the brutal 2012 rape case in Delhi. What I asked myself after watching the coverage was - "Is it a movie sequel?"&nbsp;
How many more such cases do we have to witness before it gets over forever?&nbsp;
The recent data revealed by the government in India's parliament said that rape cases rose by 8% in 2024, with total cases registered going up by 7%.&nbsp;
<h2>The data on dowry deaths&nbsp;</h2>
If you got furious just by seeing the data on rapes, hold on. There's something called dowry death.&nbsp;
In 2012, at least 8,233 women were registered as being murdered for dowry across India. In some cases, these married women were caught up in an "accidental fire" at their homes, and in some, they "committed suicide".&nbsp;
I can continue and talk about the data on female foeticide, marital rapes, domestic violence - and the list will go on. But what's the point? How long will we keep talking about the rising numbers? How long will we keep monitoring the crimes against women?

I will celebrate Women's Day when Indian women don&rsquo;t have to carry pepper sprays, fake phone calls, and recite silent prayers while walking home.

Women’s Day feels hollow when safety is still a privilege

Respect, empathy, emotional support, safety, security, opportunities, and pay parity are some of the major points of conversation when we talk about feminism. What about health? Mental and physical health often takes a back seat for women as they prioritise other aspects. 
On International Women's Day, let's talk about women and their health.&nbsp;
Some will be shocked to know that <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/eclinm/article/PIIS2589-5370(24)00137-8/fulltext">painkillers don't work</a> as well for women as they do for men. This happens because women experience pain differently than men, hence, their response to treatments is also different.&nbsp;
Females experience more severe pain than men do. They are also more prone to suffer from chronic illnesses like osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, migraine, and irritable bowel syndrome. In addition to that, there are chronic pain conditions exclusive to women and people assigned female at birth, such as endometriosis, interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, and pelvic girdle syndrome.&nbsp;
Several studies have also found that many prescription painkillers like ibuprofen, steroids, and opioids aren't as effective in women as they are in men. See the irony: women experience more pain, and the medicines they think would work are less effective.&nbsp;

<h2>Painkillers for menstrual pain&nbsp;</h2>
Menstrual pain is a common concern for women. Pelvic pain radiating to the lower back and thighs and coupled with bloating, tender breasts, and fatigue&mdash;all disrupt daily lives and productivity.&nbsp;
To manage this discomfort, many women opt for quick relief through over-the-counter painkillers, particularly nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), unaware of the potential side effects of the medicines.&nbsp;
Dr Ranita Saha, cardiologist at BM Birla Heart Hospital, told WION, "Painkillers reduce the production of prostaglandins, hormone-like substances responsible for uterine contractions and inflammation that cause period pain. While NSAIDs effectively relieve cramps and allow women to continue their daily routines without discomfort, their impact on cardiovascular health should not be ignored."&nbsp;

Several studies have shown that prolonged use of NSAIDs can increase the risk of cardiovascular complications. NSAIDs inhibit a certain enzyme in our body that is naturally cardioprotective, and thus they create an imbalance between the pro-thrombotic and the anti-thrombotic factors in the body, leading to an increased risk of blood clotting and limiting the flow of blood.&nbsp;
Dr Saha added, "NSAIDs also increase the reactivity, the risk of platelet aggregation, and thus there is an increased risk of atherosclerosis, i.e., thickening or hardening of the arteries."

A <a href="https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/JAHA.121.024199?itid=lk_inline_enhanced-template">study</a> revealed that women often face challenges in having their pain recognised, and healthcare providers also don't take them seriously. The study also mentioned that women are more likely to encounter scepticism regarding the "severity or legitimacy of their symptoms as a result of gender biases and cultural norms ingrained in the medical discourse about women's bodies and diseases over centuries".&nbsp;
These beliefs can contribute to healthcare professionals downplaying or attributing women's pain to psychological factors or hormonal fluctuations rather than addressing their underlying medical conditions.&nbsp;

Impact on Blood Clotting: The drugs affect platelet function, potentially leading to&nbsp;blood clot formation. This can pose a significant risk for individuals prone to clotting disorders or those with a history of heart disease. 
Kidney Damage and Fluid Retention: These medications can reduce kidney function over time, leading to fluid retention, which can further elevate blood pressure and increase the workload on the heart.&nbsp;
Risk of Heart Failure: The painkillers can also increase sodium and water retention in the body, thereby increasing the risk of heart failure.&nbsp;
<h2>Scope of conversation on women's health </h2>
The reach of discussions and conversations regarding women's health is somewhat limited to those with easy access. There is a need to make everyone aware of women's health at the grassroots level, as women's health in poor and underdeveloped countries is a critical concern since they often face significant barriers to accessing quality healthcare.&nbsp;
There's a need to improve access to quality healthcare services, including maternal and reproductive health services, which is critical to addressing the health needs of women in poor countries. 
Educating women and girls about their health and providing them with economic opportunities can help empower them to make informed decisions about their health. Addressing the root causes of poverty and inequality is essential to improving the health and well-being of women in poor countries.&nbsp;

It is a rare sight in the culturally conservative country, where women are typically relegated to the back seats of cars or to riding side-saddle on motorbikes, ferried by a male relative.

"Change is under way," says Zainab Safdar, demonstrating how to mount a two-wheeler while cloaked in a pink body-covering abaya.

The 40-year-old is an instructor for the "Rowdy Riders", a women-only group teaching novices in Karachi everything from the basics of balancing on a bicycle to high-octane gear changing and negotiating traffic.

Since being founded in 2017 by a handful of pioneering riders, the self-described "Rowdies" have swollen in number to more than 1,500 housewives, students and professionals.

"In the past, there were misconceptions about girls riding bikes," Safdar said, referring to doubts about their abilities. "Fortunately, with greater awareness, these notions have been dispelled."

Women's participation in the workforce is impacted by the limited availability of public transport services that ensure their safety.

Among the few dozen bikers assembled under the mid-afternoon sun, she looks on with her seven-year-old daughter Aleesha as a convoy of women open up their engines and rip past in a haze of dust.

"I am so inspired that now I have my own dream for me, that I want to ride on a heavy bike. I want to ride the whole of Pakistan," 30-year-old Zaman said.

Her story is not unusual. In Pakistan, very young boys are often seen steering motorbikes, but many of the "Rowdies" did not learn to ride a bicycle until well into adulthood.

"There should be a bike in every house, and usually there is, but it's rotting because men do not use it and women don't know how to," said Sana Kamran, sitting confidently astride a 110cc Suzuki.

Their respective journeys from Nanjamadai Kuttai village in Erode, Tamil Nadu, and Digboi, Assam, culminated at the Army Officers Training Academy, Chennai, which has been training women officers to serve the Indian Army, for more than three decades.&nbsp;

The Army Officers Training Academy in Chennai offers ab initio training for qualifying youth and sculpts them into Army officers, all in a period of 11 months. The Passing Out Parade (comparable to a graduation day in civilian institutions) at the Army OTA is to take place on Saturday, March 9.

On the day of the Passing out Parade, officer cadets will formally be inducted into the Army in what is known as a Commissioning ceremony and their parents will&nbsp;get an opportunity to unveil the star (rank) that they wear on their shoulders.&nbsp;

She had a deep desire to change this norm and be a pathbreaker, setting an example for the girls of her village.&nbsp;

On completing her civil engineering from the Kongu Engineering College, she became the first woman graduate in her family. On getting placed in IT services firm Cognizant, she worked there for six months and then decided it was time to move on to her love of sports - Kabaddi.&nbsp;

Witnessing many young girls in her village being unable to pursue their dreams and passions, owing to the familial pressure of early marriage, Saranya thought of something that none had ever attempted in their taluk (subdivision of a district) - she aimed to become the first woman to join the Indian Army.

She embarked on this arduous journey, in the hope that the young girls in her village would be motivated to step out of their homes, dream big, and work towards achieving them and attaining their potential.

When her family got to know of her SSB preparation, they were apprehensive about it and wanted to get her married, as was the case with other girls in the village. In the face of this pressure, she remained resolute and requested her family's support. To prove her capabilities and merit, she took up a job at Coimbatore and supported her family's needs with the income and also went on to contest in open Kabaddi tournaments.

Testimony to her steely resolve is the fact that she made five SSB attempts and cleared the final one. It is laudable that she chose to try again and again, despite the pressure and apprehension at home.&nbsp;

At the OTA, while she was in Chennai, the capital of her home state Tamil Nadu, she felt out of place as she did not know a word of Hindi. However, all it took was two months and she successfully adapted to the new ways, and witnessed significant improvement in her personality and progress. As she gets ready for the big day, she looks back at the tremendous transformation of a village girl into an Indian Army Officer.&nbsp;

<h2>Liuetenant Minerva Jaishy - The first woman officer from Digboi, Assam</h2>

Hailing from Digboi, Assam, she did her schooling at the Delhi Public School in her hometown. Excelling in both academics and sports, she got the opportunity to pursue her college education in New Delhi and earned her Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Political Science from Dayal Singh College.&nbsp;

While at college, the opportunity to serve in the National Cadet Corps was a life-changing decision for her, as it granted her the exposure and confidence to take on various challenges and work in teams. As the Junior Under Officer of her college NCC, she represented the institution in sports and other events. Her experience as an NCC cadet instilled a fascination for a career with the Indian Armed Forces.&nbsp;

Her native town, Digboi, Assam comes under the Tinsukia district, which has been an AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) imposed region.

While it has been largely peaceful, there have been insurgent activities, and for the people living there a career in engineering or medicine is the most preferred option. The youth there and their families don't think beyond these conventional professional courses. Even Minerva's own family, hailing from the Gorkha community was surprised at her career choice.&nbsp;

Right after college, she attempted the SSB exam twice. In the latter attempt, she secured the All India First Rank in the Short Service Commission (Women) - 53 entry and became the first candidate from her home state Assam to be ranked first.

At the time, the Indian Army's 18 Garhwal Unit was posted in Digboi and they felicitated her and highlighted her achievements before the NCC cadets in the town, with the aim of motivating them to join the Armed Forces.

Minerva believes that it is a matter of convincing the people and helping them understand the importance of the Indian Army's service and positive impact on the nation's security.

With her training now completed, even her parents who were initially surprised at her decision are extremely proud of their daughter for having chosen a career with the Indian Army. She isn't the first Army Officer of her family alone, she's the first one from her school and the first woman officer from all of Digboi, Assam.&nbsp;

On getting placed in IT services firm Cognizant, she worked there for six months and then decided it was time to move on to her love of sports - Kabaddi. Witnessing many young girls in her village being unable to pursue their dreams and passions, owing to the familial pressure of early marriage, Saranya thought of something that none had ever attempted in their taluk (subdivision of a district) - she aimed to become the first woman to join the Indian Army. She embarked on this arduous journey, in the hope that the young girls in her village would be motivated to step out of their homes, dream big, and work towards achieving them and attaining their potential. When her family got to know of her SSB preparation, they were apprehensive about it and wanted to get her married, as was the case with other girls in the village. In the face of this pressure, she remained resolute and requested her family's support. To prove her capabilities and merit, she took up a job at Coimbatore and supported her family's needs with the income and also went on to contest in open Kabaddi tournaments. Testimony to her steely resolve is the fact that she made five SSB attempts and cleared the final one. It is laudable that she chose to try again and again, despite the pressure and apprehension at home. At the OTA, while she was in Chennai, the capital of her home state Tamil Nadu, she felt out of place as she did not know a word of Hindi. However, all it took was two months and she successfully adapted to the new ways, and witnessed significant improvement in her personality and progress. As she gets ready for the big day, she looks back at the tremendous transformation of a village girl into an Indian Army Officer. Liuetenant Minerva Jaishy - The first woman officer from Digboi, Assam Hailing from Digboi, Assam, she did her schooling at the Delhi Public School in her hometown. Excelling in both academics and sports, she got the opportunity to pursue her college education in New Delhi and earned her Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Political Science from Dayal Singh College. As the Junior Under Officer of her college NCC, she represented the institution in sports and other events. Her experience as an NCC cadet instilled a fascination for a career with the Indian Armed Forces. Her native town, Digboi, Assam comes under the Tinsukia district, which has been an AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) imposed region. While it has been largely peaceful, there have been insurgent activities, and for the people living there a career in engineering or medicine is the most preferred option. The youth there and their families don't think beyond these conventional professional courses. Even Minerva's own family, hailing from the Gorkha community was surprised at her career choice. Right after college, she attempted the SSB exam twice. In the latter attempt, she secured the All India First Rank in the Short Service Commission (Women) - 53 entry and became the first candidate from her home state Assam to be ranked first. At the time, the Indian Army's 18 Garhwal Unit was posted in Digboi and they felicitated her and highlighted her achievements before the NCC cadets in the town, with the aim of motivating them to join the Armed Forces. Minerva believes that it is a matter of convincing the people and helping them understand the importance of the Indian Army's service and positive impact on the nation's security. With her training now completed, even her parents who were initially surprised at her decision are extremely proud of their daughter for having chosen a career with the Indian Army. She isn't the first Army Officer of her family alone, she's the first one from her school and the first woman officer from all of Digboi, Assam.

International Women's Day: Watch stories of women who are unafraid of owning their choices

"The great question that has never been answered, and which I have not yet been able to answer, despite my 30 years of research into the feminine soul&nbsp;is, 'What does a woman want?' " Sigmund Freud had once famously said in his letter to Princess Marie Bonaparte.&nbsp;

The question still remains unanswered and debated and somewhere lost in the hubbub of gender discussions. However elusive the nature of the question may appear, the answer was never as incomprehensible as it appeared to the world. Open the hidden nods of your day-to-day life, and you may find the answers there – the anger, discomfort, hopelessness and failed expectations expressed in the words and gestures of women around us.&nbsp;

It is difficult to list out the 10 major things that women want in a world where they lack respect, space, independence, freedom of thought, expression and ideation.&nbsp;

However, here's a 10-point guideline for all men to understand what women really want (apart from the basics).&nbsp;

1. Mr Know It All

One of the greatest myths in this world is that men know it all – from understanding sports to discussing politics, managing finance, planning trips, and even changing car tyres. It is high time that society understands and remembers that women also keep a good knowledge of these things and perhaps at times, better knowledge!

2. Sharing the burden

In today's world, it is common for women to have career aspirations as well as family and children to take care of. When a woman gives birth to a child, taking care of the infant 24 hours a day does not become her sole responsibility. The burden needs to be shared by men and women must not be compelled or put under unsaid pressure to take career breaks.

3. Setting the right narrative

It has become a common practice to appreciate men for similar things women are looked down upon for. A man working till late would be called someone "providing for his family" whereas a woman will be termed a "workaholic". A man dropping a child at daycare is considered "helpful", but if a woman does the same, it is considered her job.

4. Women "have" sexual needs

Women are judged if they openly talk about their sexual needs or their sexual preferences even in their closed groups. It is imperative to talk about women's sexual needs and understand them. This will be the baby step towards women's sexual liberation.

5. Compliments that no one wants

It has become a norm to give compliments like – 'Beauty with brains', 'You haven't aged at all', 'You are pretty for a dark-skinned girl', and 'You are a good driver, for a girl'. Well, it may seem like a compliment to a man, but for a woman, it is disrespectful and insulting remarks hidden in disguise.

6. Why an all-boys club at the C-suite level?

Representation matters. Having an all-boys club at C-suite levels indicates a lack of representation in the company. In the workplace, blatant sexism by not giving equal opportunities to married women exists. Interestingly, a man’s marital status has zero effects on his job prospects.

7. No health insurance to cover women's reproductive healthcare?

There is a need to provide health insurance that covers reproductive healthcare for women and not just cold and flu. Interestingly, lot of insurance companies still do not consider reproductive healthcare as necessary to be ‘covered’ under their regular plans which directly denies women of their basic rights.

8. No sexist humour at work

Google "sexist casual jokes at the workplace" and you will find articles that tell women how to respond to or deal with sexist jokes or remarks at the workplace. This is how prevalent the situation has been. Sexist remarks and wife jokes are definitely not what women want in the workplace.

9. Being a woman is not a disability. They don't need crutches.

Men believe that it is their birthright to protect women, spend on them and keep a watch on them. Women are strong enough to take care of themselves. Their independence and space should be respected and men should stop acting like crutches.

10. Stop celebrating Women's Day

Women – the birth giver, the housemaker, the workplace leaders – need to be serenaded all through the year. A single day in a year just won't suffice!

An all-female panel was featured in a show of Afghan broadcaster Tolo News aired on Wednesday from its studio along with a female audience to mark International Women's Day. It was seen as a rare broadcast after Taliban took over the country and many female journalists were forced to quit their profession or work off-air.

According to a survey done by Reporters Without Borders last year, it was discovered that more than 75 per cent of female journalists had quit their jobs after the Taliban took over the government and the foreign forces withdrew from the country in August 2021.

On Wednesday evening, the panel featured three women and one female moderator, who discussed women's position in Islam while covering their faces with surgical masks.

"A woman has rights from an Islamic point of view ... it is her right to be able to work, to be educated," journalist Asma Khogyani said, during the panel discussion.

Last year, the Taliban banned girls from attending high schools and universities and barred Afghan females from working in NGOs.

A panelist and former university professor Zakira Nabil said that women will continue finding ways to work and learn.

"Whether you want it or not, women exist in this society ... if it's not possible to get an education at school, she will learn knowledge at home," she said.

Because of increasing restrictions as well as the severe economic crisis of the country, the International Labour Organisation said that there has been a decline of 25 per cent in female employment last year since mid-2021. It added that more women were opting for self-employed work like tailoring at home.

Afghanistan TV's rare broadcast features all-female panel to discuss rights on Women's Day

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has chosen Group Captain Shaliza Dhami, a helicopter pilot, to assume the leadership of a missile squadron in the western sector, IAF officials announced on Tuesday (March 7). This would be the first time a woman officer of the IAF will be in control of a frontline combat unit.

On the occasion of International Women's Day, the officials said that Dhami, who was commissioned into the IAF in 2003, is a qualified flight instructor and has spent more than 2,800 hours in the air.

The change occurs at a time when the military services are expanding women's horizons and providing them with possibilities on par with those available to males.

“Having been commended by the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief on two occasions, the officer is presently posted in the operations branch of a frontline Command Headquarters” said one of the officials as quoted by the Hindustan Times.&nbsp;

“This is yet another milestone for women officers in combat and command appointments. In an effort to promote gender equality within their ranks, the IAF and navy have also let women officers join their special forces units—the Garud Commando Force and Marine Commandos, respectively—so long as they match the eligibility requirements.

The army began appointing female officers to command positions outside the medical stream in February, and about 50 of them are slated to lead units in operational settings, including forward locations, under the Northern and Eastern Commands, which are in charge of securing China's borders with India.

She said,&nbsp;“I am working currently with Shakuntala Bai Nagarkar, a veteran Lavani dancer in a play called 'Lavani Ke Rang'. She has also taught me the intricacies of Lavani, and I admire her a lot because of her talent, tremendous stage presence, spontaneity, ability to improvise, irrepressible spirit and energy. She is over 65 years old, and still so dedicated to her art and this commitment is something all performing artists can learn from her."

It was a wonderful place to discover more about the arts and literature and to work as a team. The decision comes on the back of BCCI's announcement to give free entry to women and girls in all WPL matches to promote women's cricket in India.&nbsp;
