Japan's navy on Tuesday appointed the first woman to command a warship squadron, including the flagship Izumo helicopter carrier, as it tries to lure more females to make up for a dearth of male recruits in greying Japan.

Ryoko Azuma, will command four ships with a combined crew of 1,000, of which only 30 are women, that make up the Maritime Self Defense Force's (MSDF) First Escort Division.

"I don't think about being a woman. I will concentrate my energy on fulfilling my duties as commander," Azuma, 44, said at a change of command ceremony attended by 400 sailors aboard the Izumo, which was docked at a shipyard in Yokohama near Tokyo for repairs.

When she joined the MSDF in 1996 women were barred from serving on warships, a rule that the navy abolished ten years ago. Submarines, however, are still crewed only by men.

Japan's military, like the wider economy, is turning to women to make up a shortfall in personnel as the nation's working-age population shrinks amid a drop in birthrates. The number of people aged between 18 and 26 years old is forecast by the government to shrink to seven million people by 2065 from 11 million last year.

Unlike commercial companies, however, Japan's military is unable to relocate units overseas or hire foreigners to supplement to their Japanese staff.

By 2030, the SDF plans to increase the combined number of women serving in the air-sea and ground forces to 9 percent of the total from 6 percent, or 14,000 people now. In addition to Azuma, other senior female officers in the MSDF include four captains and a rear admiral in charge of logistics.

"I want to devote myself to becoming a person that will inspire others," Azuma said when asked if she wanted to serve as a role model for other women.

After a few hours, the girl's body was found with her throat slit on the terrace of her house, the police said.

During the investigation, it emerged that the girl's mother, in her 30s, had an extra-marital affair, the police said.

Yesterday, the woman's paramour came to meet her when the girl's father was away. Before he came, the woman had already sent her daughter downstairs. The girl returned after sometime only to find the couple in a "compromising position", they said.

She threatened to call her father and inform him.

Enraged, her mother and her paramour, in his 20s, first allegedly rendered her unconscious, the police said.

The autopsy report will clear whether they held her by the neck or gave her some sedative, they added.

They took her to a terrace where they allegedly slit her throat. After they returned, the woman went downstairs and pretended to look for her daughter. She took her younger son to a nearby temple and adjacent lanes to search for the girl, the police said.

Meanwhile, her partner disposed of the blood-stained clothes and hid the knife in the woman's house, they said.

The girl's father informed the police. Later, some residents of the building saw the girl's body on the terrace and alerted the police, they said.

The police questioned the residents of the building and also scanned the call details of the victim's family, the police said.

They developed a suspicion about the girl's mother after they found that she used to speak to a man at odd hours, they said.

The accused, a labourer, was called for questioning and subsequently revealed about his involvement, the police said, adding that the duo has been arrested.

UK election: Preet Gill first female Sikh MP, Tanmanjeet Singh first turbaned lawmaker

A hijab-clad woman was allegedly accosted at a US store by another customer who called her a "terrorist" and told her to "get out" of the country, the latest in a series of hate incidents in which headscarf- wearing women have been targeted following Donald Trump's win.

The incident happened at Smith's store in Albuquerque, New Mexico, CBS-affiliate KRQE television reported.

"I went down the aisle to go get sodas and then all of a sudden I hear somebody starting to yell at her (the hijab-clad woman)," Barney Lopez, an eyewitness, was quoted as saying.

"And...Saying things like 'Get out of our country, you don't belong here, you're a terrorist!'" he said.

At that point, Lopez said, practically everyone in the store stopped what they were doing and ran to the defence of the woman in hijab.

Lopez snapped a picture, albeit a bit shaky, of the person screaming at the woman in the hijab. The lady was wearing a hat and sunglasses. A Smith's employee appeared to stand in the way to keep her back.

"There was even another woman that like went over to the woman in the hijab and put her arm around her and gave her hug and held her while the Smith's employees came," Barney said.

Employees shuffled the shouting lady out of the store, but Lopez said the screaming woman waited in the parking lot for the woman in the hijab to come out.

"So all the Smith's employees gathered around this woman and escorted her to her car and helped her load her groceries," he recalled.

Lopez said while the incident was initially shocking and upsetting, he ultimately left the store feeling uplifted.

The US TV station called Smith's to enquire about Wednesday's incident and a manager confirmed what happened.

The manager called the woman in the hijab "strong" in the face of the verbal attack.

The Smith's manager also said the woman in the hijab came back to the store later in the day to thank the employees.

Police were called and reportedly got to the store after the yelling woman had left.

The incident comes amid a slew of intimidation and assault cases that have been reported across the country against hijab-clad women post-election.

Earlier this month, a Muslim student's hijab was allegedly ripped off and her hair pulled down by a classmate at a school in Minnesota.

Also, a Muslim student of Michigan University was approached by an unidentified man who yelled at her and threatened to set her on fire if she did not remove her hijab, prompting police to probe the hate crime incident.

A Muslim high-school teacher in Georgia was also told to hang herself with her headscarf in a handwritten anonymous note she received in her classroom.

Tara Moore praised the influence of her mind trainer Tony Lekic after the Briton registered a first ever singles victory at a grand slam tournament when she beat Alison Van Uytvanck in the opening round at Wimbledon on Tuesday.

Coming into the grasscourt tournament ranked 227th in the world, the wildcard overcame the Belgian ranked 100 places above her 6-3 6-2 to set up a second round encounter against Russian 13th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova.

"It's been a great benefit. He doesn't just help me with on-court stuff. There's a lot of off-court stuff that people don't see, a lot of behind the scenes things that are tough to handle for a tennis player," Moore told British media.

"We travel a lot. We're away from loved ones and friends a lot. That's really difficult. Tennis is so difficult without all the little things. He's definitely there to help with the little things. That's been monumental for me."

Moore said she also drew inspiration from 772nd-ranked British qualifier Marcus Willis' win over Lithuanian world number 54 Ricardas Berankis, which set up a second round encounter against seven-time champion Roger Federer.

Tara Moore is the first British woman to reach the second round at Wimbeldon

That's been monumental for me." Moore said she also drew inspiration from 772nd-ranked British qualifier Marcus Willis' win over Lithuanian world number 54 Ricardas Berankis, which set up a second round encounter against seven-time champion Roger Federer. "I was watching, cheering and screaming at the screen. Willis has done so great. For sure it was an inspiration," Moore said. "The British players are very supportive of each other and push each other on. I definitely think (British) tennis is on the up." Relatives slit the throat of a young mother, who was pregnant with her second child, after she married against their will in eastern Pakistan, the latest in a spate of so-called "honour killings", officials said on Friday. Pak woman killed for 'honour'

A baby suffering from a birth defect caused by the Zika virus was born on Tuesday in New Jersey to a woman visiting from Honduras who is infected with virus after she was bitten by a mosquito early on in her pregnancy, media reported.

The baby girl is suffering from severe microcephaly, a birth defect marked by small head size that can lead to severe developmental problems, after she was delivered through cesarean section at Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, New Jersey, the news website NorthJersey.com reported.

U.S. health officials have concluded that Zika infections in pregnant women can cause microcephaly. The World Health Organization has said there is strong scientific consensus that Zika can also cause Guillain-Barre, a rare neurological syndrome that causes temporary paralysis in adults.

The connection between Zika and microcephaly first came to light last fall in Brazil, which has now confirmed more than 1,300 cases of microcephaly that it considers to be related to Zika infections in the mothers.

The unidentified premature newborn also suffers from intestinal and visual issues, Manny Alvarez, chief of obstetrics and gynecology at Hackensack, told NorthJersey.com.

"You could see the pain in her heart," Alvarez said of the mother, the website reported.

Hospital officials were not available for comment.

The unidentified 31-year-old mother was staying with relatives after she arrived in the United States more than a month ago from Honduras, where she was bitten by a mosquito, Alvarez said.

Zika is carried by mosquitoes, which transmit the virus to humans. A small number of cases of sexual transmission have been reported in the United States and elsewhere. A case of suspected transmission through a blood transfusion in Brazil has raised questions about other ways that Zika may spread.

In January, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that a U.S. woman who had lived in Brazil gave birth to a microcephalic baby in Hawaii.

The Zika outbreak is affecting large parts of Latin America and the Caribbean, with Brazil the hardest hit.

Honduras is the Central American country with the highest number of Zika cases, with 19,000 infections, and at least 238 pregnant women infected. It has also detected at least 78 Guillain-Barre cases.

There is no vaccine or treatment for Zika, which is a close cousin of dengue and chikungunya and causes mild fever, rash and red eyes. An estimated 80 percent of people infected have no symptoms, making it difficult for pregnant women to know whether they have been infected.

A crocodile in Australia snatched a woman taking a late-night swim in a national park and is believed to have killed her, media reported on Monday.

The 46-year-old woman was swimming with a friend late on Sunday in waist-deep water at a beach in Queensland state when she disappeared, police said.

"They felt a nudge, and a large crocodile is alleged to have grabbed one of the ladies and pulled her into the water," Neil Noble, a supervisor for the Queensland state ambulance service, told reporters.

Police would only say the woman was believed to have been taken by a crocodile. Media reported that the friend struggled to pull the woman back from the crocodile`s jaws.

Police did not identify the woman or give her nationality but said she lives in Australia and has family in New Zealand.
A police spokesman told Reuters a search and rescue operation would continue on Tuesday.

Warren Entsch, the area`s member of parliament, said the incident occurred in a place that is popular with crocodile-spotting tours, with many warning signs.

The incident should not encourage reprisals against the animals, he said.

"You can`t legislate against human stupidity," Entsch told reporters. "This is a tragedy but it was avoidable. There are warning signs everywhere up there."
