A key witness has said that a man who faces execution for a murder in the US state of South Carolina did not commit the crime. But the state supreme court rejected the explosive testimony&nbsp;late Thursday, saying the execution should proceed as scheduled on Friday (Sep 20).

Lawyers of the 46-year-old Khalil Divine Black Sun Allah, earlier known as Freddie Owens, sought to halt the execution but it is going ahead in all likelihood.

Co-defendent Steven Golden wrote to the court saying that he lied at trial, and Owens was wrongfully convicted. He said Owens was not at the scene of the crime that took place in 1997, when he was 19.

<h2>South Carolina execution: What's the case all about?</h2>

Owens was sentenced to death in the fatal shooting of a female store worker during an armed robbery in November 1997.&nbsp;

He maintained his innocence through all these years. While the CCTV footage showed two masked men engaging in the robbery, forensic evidence did not tie Owens to the shooting.

In his new affidavit to court, Golden said Owens was not at the scene of the crime. Golden said he did not reveal the real identity of the shooter as he feared the shooter's associates would kill him. Golden, who was 18 at the time, also said he was high during the initial police investigation when he named Owens.

A witness who saw the nitrogen gas execution of 58-year-old Kenneth Eugene Smith, while speaking to the Daily Mail, spoke about how the Alabama inmate wriggled in pain when he was suffocated to death. 
 
Smith was taken to the execution chamber located at the William C. Holman prison in Atmore and was given a tight mask to wear on his face. 
 
Speaking about the moment when the convict was executed, spiritual guide Jeff Hood said that it was the “worst thing” he had ever witnessed in his life. 
 
He added that even prison officials were left horrified seeing Smith withering in pain for almost 22 minutes before dying. “When they turned the nitrogen on, he began to convulse, he popped up on the gurney over and over again, he shook the whole gurney,” said Hood.

"I mean, it really was like watching someone put a plastic bag over someone's head and just to see what happens, and holding it as tight as they can, as long as they can, to watch the person resist and shake," said&nbsp;Hood, while speaking to&nbsp;NBC News.

"They repeatedly said that he would not be able to resist the nitrogen, and would be unconscious within seconds. And then he looks like a fish out of water," he said

At one given point, the convict struggled against his restraints as his wife Deanna shed tears seeing his condition from the witness box. 
 
The man spoke his last words through the gas mask after he made a heart sign using his left hand for his family members. “Tonight Alabama causes humanity to take a step backwards... I’m leaving with love, peace and light,” Smith said, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Hood added that the contraption which was used for executing Smith appeared like a firefighter mask.

&nbsp;“I could see the corrections officers, I think they were very surprised that this didn't go smoothly - one of the state officials in the room was so nervous she was tap dancing,” he added while speaking to the Daily Mail.

In the indictment unsealed on Friday, 58-year-old Corcoran was not charged. It has presented him as a key confidant of Trump who was deceived by the latter after he allegedly tried to prevent efforts of the Justice Department to recover classified documents which were kept at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida after he left the White House in January 2021. 
 
The 37-count indictment stated that Trump suggested to Corcoran to falsely tell the Justice Department that he was not in possession of any sensitive documents which he can turn over after a May 2022 subpoena. 
 
"Wouldn't it be better if we just told them we don't have anything here?" Trump quizzed, according to an account by "Trump Attorney 1" which has been mentioned in detail in the indictment.

Corcoran has not been identified by his name in the indictment, however, news reports citing sources said that he is the lawyer listed as "Trump Attorney 1" in the document. 
 
The former federal prosecutor was forced to testify and submit detailed notes to a grand jury which weighed the evidence. 
 
Generally, communications that take place between clients and lawyers remain protected under the legal doctrine of attorney-client privilege.

The Institute of Geodynamics in Athens said that the first tremor of 5.2-magnitude had struck at 5.15 pm (1515 GMT) east of the island of Crete and at a depth of 9 kilometres (5.6 miles). &nbsp;

The next one was even larger of 5.4 magnitude, which shook the ground at 8.59 pm (1859 GMT) about 25 kilometres (15.5 miles) northwest of the first, at a depth of 6.3 kilometres (3.9 miles), the institute reported. &nbsp;

In either earthquake, none of the buildings were damaged, the mayor of the small island of Kassos, which was closest to the epicentre of the quakes, told state news agency ANA. &nbsp;

Longtime associate Alex Cifuentes told authorities a woman would send Guzman photos of young girls to choose from, with a fee of $5,000 per girl.

Cifuentes used this service himself three or four times, having sex with girls as young as 15-years-old, the government said in the documents, adding he "witnessed the defendant do the same on multiple occasions, with girls as young as 13 years old."

The former Sinaloa cartel leader, 61, would allegedly sometimes drug the girls with "a powdery substance" with Cifuentes' help before raping them.

But Cifuentes, who lived with Guzman in 2007 and 2008, did not mention any of this in four days of testimony during the trial, which ended on Thursday after three months of hearings.

"Joaquin denies the allegations, which lack any corroboration and were deemed too prejudicial and unreliable to be admitted at trial," Guzman's lawyer, Eduardo Balarezo, said in an emailed statement.

"It is unfortunate that the material was publicly released just prior to the jury beginning deliberations."

On Monday, the jury will begin deliberating whether Guzman is guilty of trafficking hundreds of tons of drugs into the US. He faces a life sentence if convicted.

The documents were published following a legal claim by US media, which throughout the trial fought the secrecy surrounding the case.

Cifuentes, 50, was arrested in Mexico in 2013 then deported from Colombia to the US. Currently, in prison, he is cooperating with the government in exchange for a reduced sentence.
