"Youngy is a quality player. He's been in the mix for us for a long period of time and hasn't had a lot of opportunities, but the opportunities [he has had] in recent times, he's played really well. "We've got seven one-day games and a couple of warm-up games leading into that World Cup, but we're trying to stay where our feet are and focus on these games rather than looking too far ahead," Latham added.

He's very destructive at the top of the order, and obviously he might get some opportunities throughout this series at some point… Guys will get opportunities through the series, which is great for us, to get guys more experience against quality sides, and hopefully, if they are required throughout a World Cup, they're ready to go," Latham added.

Openers Tom Latham and Will Young put on a brilliant stand of 148 runs for the first wicket before Devon Conway joined the party with a sensational knock of unbeaten 99 to help the hosts finish strong at stumps on the&nbsp;opening day.

While Latham remained unbeaten on 186, his opening partner Young scored 54 off 114 deliveries before being dismissed by Shoriful Islam in the 38th over. His stay out in the middle could have been cut short earlier by Ebadot Hossain, however, Young managed to survive after edging one to the slip fielder and ended up getting 7 runs off just 1 ball.

The incident happened in the 26th over of New Zealand's first innings when Young was batting on 26. Hossain managed to induce an edge off his bat which flew towards the slip. He was put down by the fielder as the ball raced towards the boundary rope. Taskin Ahmed managed to cut it off before the ball could have touched the boundary rope and threw it back towards the wicket-keeper as the Young and Latham scrambled for the third run.

The wicket-keeper took an aim at the stumps after receiving the ball, however, both the Kiwi batters had already completed the third run by then. What followed was an absolute comedy of errors as wicket-keeper Nurul Hasan's throw missed the stump and saw the ball travel to the boundary line. Young managed to get three runs by running and a four from the overthrow as he ended up with 7 runs off just 1 ball.

Young then held centre-stage in his fourth Test appearance as he looked composed and unperturbed during his unbeaten knock of 75 off 180 balls. Latham (50 batting off 165 balls), the seasoned campaigner, survived three on-field decisions (two leg before and one caught behind), negated by DRS, and decided to frustrate the two Indian spinners with a gritty defensive game.

The Green Park track became better for batting on the second day and the turn that was on offer was minimal. The variable bounce wasn't also there for the better part of the 57 overs that they batted. Since it was slow turn, the Black Caps duo mostly plonked their front-foot and neutralised the turn. And when they played on the back-foot, there was enough time to manoeuvre on both sides of the wicket.

Both were able to adjust on the back-foot against Ravindra Jadeja (14-4-28-0) and Ravichandran Ashwin (17-5-38-0), both of whom didn't look threatening on the day.
