It is often said that reality is stranger than fiction. An incident from the Indian&nbsp;state of Uttar Pradesh may just prove the above adage even more accurately. Reportedly, a man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the murder of his wife. However, as it turns out, the wife was alive and living at her sister’s home.&nbsp;

The victim named Kandhai got married to Ramvati in 2006. Both hailed from the same village named Jamapur. However, on one fine spring day in February 2009, Ramvati, mysteriously went missing as Kandhai and other family members&nbsp;searched for her.

Later, as it happens in most such cases, suspicion was cast on Kandhai, the husband. The&nbsp;family members of Ramvati lodged a complaint against him for kidnapping and murder. Over the course of&nbsp;next eight years,&nbsp;Kandhai found himself in the middle of a legal battle, for a crime&nbsp;he didn’t commit.

The court in 2017 even sentenced him to a prison term of 10 years. Thereafter, Kandhai moved the High court and managed to get bail after serving six years in prison.

However, the tag of a kidnapper and murderer still lay with Kandhai. But all changed last week on Saturday when one of&nbsp;Kandhai’s relatives spotted his wife Ramvati at her sister and brother-in-law’s home.&nbsp;

“Kandhai later informed his other relatives who reached the spot, only to be joined by the entire village population outside the residence of Ramvati’s brother-in-law to witness the impossible,” the police stated.

What Kandhai and the entire village saw there, left them astonished. Ramvati was alive and present before them in flesh and blood. A police team, including women officers, led by the Station House Officer (SHO) of Ramgaon, Sanjay Singh arrived at the spot and confirmed the ‘discovery’.

While many of the findings of the governance review are "pretty standard", there are "a couple of more serious allegations," he wrote, saying the review is still "substantiating the allegations".

For submitting an error-ridden medical report, a court in Diyarbakır has given sentences of 30 months each for Başak Demirtaş, a teacher and her doctor on Thursday, reported a local Kurdish news agency. &nbsp;

The case had begun in March 2018. The case relates to hospital admissions and two surgeries for a miscarriage suffered by Demirtaş in 2015. &nbsp;&nbsp;

As per her legal team, the teacher has been charged with fraud after a doctor’s note for medical leave of five days from work was issued during an appointment on December 11, 2015, but mistakenly dated as December 14, four days later. &nbsp;

The Toebbes will be produced in a federal court in Martinsburg, West Virginia on October 12, as per the DOJ. They have been charged with criminal offences under Atomic Energy Act. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The package also included instructions for establishing a covert relationship to purchase more information. Believing that FBI agent was a foreign representative, Toebbe began corresponding with him through encrypted email, reported the DOJ. &nbsp;

For several months, Toebbe continued correspondence and made an agreement to sell "restricted data" in exchange for money in cryptocurrency. &nbsp;

As a “good faith” payment, the undercover agent sent $10,000 in cryptocurrency to Toebbe on June 8.&nbsp;The couple travelled to a location in West Virginia a couple of times to deliver an encrypted SD card in exchange of money.

The FBI arrested the couple on their third visit, the DOJ reported. &nbsp;

A Brazilian court has sentenced Francoise de Souza Oliveira to 31 years in prison for murdering her husband,&nbsp;Greek&nbsp;ambassador&nbsp;Kyriakos Amiridis, authorities said Sunday.

Amiridis, 59 at the time of his death in 2016, lived in Brasilia and was on vacation for the Christmas holidays with his&nbsp;wife&nbsp;and his daughter in Rio de Janeiro.

Days after Christmas, the remains of the diplomat were found inside his charred rental car and ripped out under a bridge, in the municipality of Nova Iguacu, near the state capital.

A police investigation found numerous clues, including blood on a sofa and security camera footage, that implicated Sergio Gomes Moreira Filho, military policeman and lover of Francoise.

The two were sentenced to 22 years in prison, initially without parole.&nbsp;

"The circumstances of the crime are atypical, since (the&nbsp;ambassador) was executed during the Christmas holidays ... in this case, this family was torn apart," said the Judge Anna Christina da Silveira Fernandes, of the 4th Criminal Court of Nova Iguacu.&nbsp;

The trial had a third defendant: Eduardo Moreira Tedeschi de Melo, a relative of the policeman, who was acquitted of the&nbsp;murder&nbsp;charge but sentenced to one year probation, already served, for helping to hide the body.&nbsp;

In the trial, which lasted for three days, until Friday, the judge heard 18 witnesses.&nbsp;

In her decision, the magistrate also referred to the accused in their capacity as public servants.&nbsp;

"He swore to defend society and not rebel against it, dishonouring the Military Police and all the trust placed in him by the State," she said, referring to Sergio Gomes Moreira Filho.&nbsp;

And she pointed out that De Souza Oliveira, "who calls herself an&nbsp;ambassador, tarnished the name of&nbsp;Brazil&nbsp;and embarrassed the nation with her conduct, given the negative international repercussions of the events."&nbsp;

"This was never about a figure but a husband honouring his commitment to his family," a spokesperson for Akhmedova said, rejecting a claim from a spokesperson for her former husband that she would have been better off not pursuing the legal action. 
 
The Times newspaper said Akhmedova would receive around 150 million pounds, which would also have to cover her legal costs. 
 
Akhmedova's legal action was funded through a specialist financing company, Burford Capital, which said it would receive approximately $103 million for its efforts to enforce the 454 million pound judgment. 
 
Burford said the settlement would boost its operating profit this year by around $20 million. 
 
"In aggregate, Burford expects the matter to have generated more than $70 million of realized gain over the life of the investment," it said in a statement. 
 
British judge Gwynneth Knowles, in her ruling against Akhmedova's son Temur in April, said: "The Akhmedov family is one of the unhappiest ever to have appeared in my courtroom."

Wife of Interpol ex-chief fears for his life and her own safety

The bodies of a retired Andhra judge and his wife were on Friday found on the railway tracks near Tirupati.&nbsp;

Police said the judge had thrown himself in front of a train, and that his wife followed suit a few hours later.&nbsp;

Police identified the retired additional district judge as Pamuluru Sudhaka and his wife as Varalakshmi. They were 62 and 56. News reports Saturday said their bodies were recovered from the railway tracks near Chadalavada Engineering College in Renigunta, 10 km from Tirupati.&nbsp;

Police said that on hearing the news, the judge's son and daughter, Sandeep and Sabitha, both of whom are software professionals in Bengaluru, rushed home. Varalakshmi on the other hand visited the spot and took the same extreme step as her husband.

The court granted bail to Rabri Devi and Tejashwi Yadav in the CBI case on a personal bond of&nbsp;Rs&nbsp;1 lakh and a surety of a like amount.

However, the regular bail was not granted to the accused in the ED case after the agency sought time to file a reply to the bail applications.

The court had on August 31 granted interim bail to the accused, except Lalu Yadav in the case filed by the CBI after the agency had sought time to file a reply today.

Earlier, the court had summoned and asked Lalu Yadav's family and all others involved to appear before it.

The case is related to alleged irregularities in granting the operational contract of two IRCTC hotels to a private firm.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav did not appear before the court on Friday since he was in a Jharkhand jail on another charge.

The CBI, which had on April 16 filed the charge sheet in the case, had said there was enough evidence against Lalu Yadav, Rabri Devi, Tejashwi Yadav and others.

Earlier, the CBI had informed the court that sanction has been procured from authorities concerned to prosecute Additional Member of Railway Board BK Agarwal, who was then the group general manager of the IRCTC.

Besides Lalu Yadav, and his family members, former Union minister Prem Chand Gupta and his wife Sarla Gupta and Agarwal, then managing director of IRCTC PK Goyal and then IRCTC director Rakesh Saxena were also named in the charge sheet.

The other names in the charge sheet include then group general managers of IRCTC VK&nbsp; Asthana and RK&nbsp; Goyal, and Vijay Kochhar, Vinay Kochhar, both directors of Sujata Hotels and owners of Chanakya Hotel.

Delight Marketing Company, now known as Lara Projects, and Sujata Hotels Private Limited have also been named as accused companies in the charge sheet.

The CBI had registered a case in July last year and carried out searches at 12 locations in Patna, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar and Gurgaon in connection with the case.

The charges in the case include criminal conspiracy (120-B), cheating (420) under the Indian Penal Code and corruption, the central probe agency had said.

The Enforcement Directorate had filed a case based on the the CBI complaint.

Hamza Abbasi, however, has not responded to her to the allegation yet.

A man knocked the doors of the Delhi High Court in search of a woman whom he claimed to be his wife but she refused to go with him telling the court that she never married him.

The woman also denied the man’s claim that she was detained illegally by her brother and maintained that she was living with him willingly. She told the court that the ‘nikahnama’ (marriage certificate) claimed by the man was not genuine as she was forced to sign blank papers after being taken forcibly in a car.

With these facts coming up in the court proceedings, a bench of justices S Muralidhar and I S Mehta refused to be drawn into any further claims and counter-claims and held that it was satisfied that the woman was living with the brother of her own free will and was under “no restraint or illegal detention”. The court disposed of a habeas corpus petition filed by the man seeking direction to the woman’s brother to produce the woman, whom he claimed to have married on July 26, 2017, and said it was “not inclined to issue any directions in this petition”.

“This court would not like to enter into this controversy at this stage because as far as the habeas corpus petition is concerned, the court has to satisfy itself that the person whose production is sought by the petitioner is not under any restraint and is not being detained by anyone against that person’s wishes. “In this case, the court is satisfied that as of date, the woman is living of her own free will with her brother and is under no restraint or illegal detention. The court, accordingly, is not inclined to issue any directions in this petition,” the bench said.

The judges spoke to the woman and her brother in their chamber where she said that “no valid” marriage was performed between her and the man and she does not wish to go with him. The woman also maintained that she was staying with her brother and his family willingly and her date of birth in her Aadhaar card, produced by the man, was erroneous. The judges, thereafter, called the man and his counsel in their chamber and conveyed to them the stand of the woman. The man also denied that he had taken away the woman forcibly and made her sign papers for the purpose of marriage.

When the man’s counsel expressed apprehension over his safety, the judges said it will be for the SHO of Malviya Nagar police station to make an assessment for his protection and issue directions. The man claimed before the court that he married the woman and they both decided not to disclose this to their families. He said that in April when the woman disclosed about her marriage to her brother, he objected to it and threatened the man with dire consequences. On April 22, the man also told his parents about his marriage and they agreed to it.

While the man claimed that according to the Aadhaar card submitted at the time of marriage, the woman was born on January 1, 1998, she said she turned 18 on March 24 this year as she was born in 2000. The police had said that the man was known to the woman’s family and had also stayed at her brother’s house earlier for some years. They said that the woman had claimed that her signatures were forcibly taken by the man after she denied his marriage proposal.

While the man claimed that according to the Aadhaar card submitted at the time of marriage, the woman was born on January 1, 1998, she said she turned 18 on March 24 this year as she was born in 2000.

Terrorists on Friday attacked a wife of a civilian they had earlier killed in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The victim has been admitted to the hospital and is in a critical condition.&nbsp

The terrorists had fired upon Mohammad Ashraf Mir at Harwan in Bomai area of Sopore township of the north Kashmir district, a police official said.

On Monday, three civilians were killed by the militants in Khanpora area of Baramulla. The deceased were identified as Asif Ahmad Sheikh, Haseeb Ahmad Khan and Muhammad Asghar. The trio, all in their early 20s', were residents of Kakkar Hamam in Baramulla, a police officer was reported as saying.

Earlier on Saturday, terrorists hurled a grenade at a police station in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district.

The grenade exploded just outside the station.

Police inside the station fired a few shots in the air to deter the attackers. A search operation has been launched.

J&K: After killing husband, terrorists attack wife

A Delhi-based jeweller allegedy committed suicide by jumping off the sixth floor of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) building after his home and store were raided.&nbsp

The DRI said the jeweller had neither been summoned nor arrested by them.&nbsp

The DRI added that the jeweller was immediately rushed to Safdarjung Hospital but that his "life could not be saved".&nbsp

"A total of Rs 13 crore smuggled goods were seized from (name withheld) possession. But unfortunately, the owner of the smuggled goods jumped through the window of the visitor's room at around 12 pm. He was neither summoned nor arrested by the DRI. The person was immediately taken to the Safdarjung Hospital by officers of DRI and CISF of CGO complex, but his life could not be saved," the DRI said in a statement. &nbsp

ANI however reported the jeweller's wife as having written to the SHO (station house officer) of the Shalimar Bagh police station, asking that police take stringent action against a particular DRI official and his team.&nbsp

ANI added that the jeweller's wife is alleging he was murdered by the DRI official and his team.&nbsp

Police meanwhile have said the jeweller's body will be given to the family after a post-mortem examination. A probe is underway.&nbsp

And a magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the case.&nbsp

Attorney Wang Quanzhang, who defended political activists and victims of land seizures, has had no contact with the outside world since he disappeared in a 2015 police sweep aimed at courtroom critics of Communist authorities.

Wang has since been charged with "subversion of state power" but authorities have blocked lawyers from visiting him.&nbsp

"Maybe something horrible happened to him in jail and that is why authorities don't want anyone to find out," his wife Li Wenzu told AFP.

"It's been 1,000 days. I don't know if he is alive or dead."&nbsp

Li and a small group of supporters set off Wednesday on a march from Beijing to the "No. 2 Detention Centre" in the northeastern city of Tianjin, where officials last said he was being held.

They pressed on even during a freak snowstorm and plan to reach Tianjin by next Friday.

"We want to see the president of the court. We want to see the presiding judge. It would be good if someone came out to tell us what Wang Quanzhang's case was all about. If he committed no sin, they should release him," she said.

Li wore a black sweatshirt with the slogan "Free Quanzhang" and a cap embroidered with the words of the last letter Wang sent his parents.

Fearing reprisal, he told them that becoming a human rights lawyer was not a "reckless decision" but a response to a call from within.

For nearly three years, Li has made dozens of freedom of information requests to police -- which have been sent back unanswered -- and she has visited the complaints office of the Supreme People's Court in Beijing weekly to no avail.

Instead of answers, she has been put under constant police surveillance.

Tears streamed down her cheeks as Li talked about how their five-year-old son is afraid of the state security officers who have moved into an apartment below their home.&nbsp

Wang's case is unusual because no trial date has even been announced. He is the last person in the so-called "709 crackdown" to remain in legal limbo.

When AFP called the Tianjin No. 2 Detention Centre on Thursday, a man who picked up said: "You should not ask about this matter."

Frances Eve, a researcher for the charity Chinese Human Rights Defenders, said the tireless campaigning of family members of detained lawyers had drawn international attention to China's "lies" about its legal system.

"Li shouldn't be forced to wait years and walk miles to receive basic information about her husband's status. Wang Quanzhang should be released and reunited with his family," Eve said.

A government-appointed lawyer said he met Wang in July last year, but his family has disputed the claim, saying there is no evidence such a meeting took place.

Hyderabad: Man thrashes wife for switching off wifi

A senior minister in Pakistan&rsquo;s Sindh province, whose bullet-riddled body was found in his house along with that of his wife, first killed her and then used the same weapon to commit suicide, police said Saturday.

Mir Hazar Khan Bijarani, 71, and his former lawmaker wife, Fariha Razzaq were found lying in a pool of blood in the bedroom in their posh Defence Housing Authority residence here Friday. According to police, both were shot dead at close range.

An initial post-mortem report suggests Bijarani killed his wife before committing suicide, the deputy inspector general police, South Zone Karachi said in a statement.

&ldquo;On the basis of available crime scene or circumstantial evidence and initial post-mortem report, it appears that Mir Hazar Khan Bijarani killed his wife and then committed suicide with the same weapon,&rdquo; the statement said.

The examination of the crime scene and dead bodies indicated that the death was caused by firearms, the DIG said, adding that Bijarani received one gunshot in the head while his wife three bullets &mdash; one on head and two on abdomen.

&ldquo;According to initial forensic/ballistic report of Forensic Science Laboratory, all the empty bullet casings collected from the crime scene has been fired from the same weapon,&rdquo; the statement added.

During the initial investigations, police secured the crime scene and photographed properly, also the DVR of CCTV cameras installed at the house has been seized, the DIG said.

&ldquo;Relevant evidence&rdquo; &ndash; blood samples, bullet empties, fingerprints &ndash; were as also collected from the scene.

While police are yet to ascertain the reason behind the deaths, they had interviewed six individuals &ndash; including two police guards and four domestic servants &ndash; in which it was revealed that the couple was having altercations over the past few days.

The house was locked from inside and the door was forcibly opened by Bijarani&rsquo;s son and servants, the statement said.

The Haridev police station was informed of the incident who then rushed to the couple&#39;s residence in Ostad Amir Khan to find the body of 82-year-old Amar Kumar Sanyal in bed with his wife, Hasi Rani Sanyal, standing beside with a blank face.&nbsp;

As per reports, the wife was suspected to be in a state of shock as she did not answer questions asked by the police. The deceased man was a former employee of Calcutta Dock Labour Board and is said to have passed away three to four days ago.&nbsp;

It buttressed its stance by adding that Islamabad considered Jadhav as &quot;the face of Indian terrorism, especially in Pakistan.&quot;&nbsp;

In addition to this, the MoFA released another &quot;confessional&quot; video of Jadhav`s, in which the convicted alleged spy was seen confessing that he did cross from Iran to Pakistan two years back.&nbsp;

Police registered a case&nbsp;against a married couple on Saturday in Hyderabad&#39;s Banjara Hills for submitting a fake death certificate and documents to claim an insurance of Rs 1 Crore.

Police said that they received a complaint from ICICI prudential life insurance policy management stating that Syed Shakeel Alam and his wife Nazia Shakeel had taken one crore insurance policy in 2012 on the latter&#39;s name.

Earlier this month, the couple created fake death certificate and documents of the wife and soon after claimed the insurance policy.

After a few days, when a staff of the ICICI went to inquire at their residence, to his surprise, he was received by Nazia.

&quot;Accused Nazia has been arrested and is in our custody while her husband is on the run. A search operation is on,&quot; said police.

A case has been registered under sections 406, 420, 471 and 468 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Police registered a case against a married couple on Saturday in Hyderabad's Banjara Hills for submitting a fake death certificate and documents to claim an insurance of Rs 1 Crore. Police said that they received a complaint from ICICI prudential life insurance policy management stating that Syed Shakeel Alam and his wife Nazia Shakeel had taken one crore insurance policy in 2012 on the latter's name. Earlier this month, the couple created fake death certificate and documents of the wife and soon after claimed the insurance policy. After a few days, when a staff of the ICICI went to inquire at their residence, to his surprise, he was received by Nazia. "Accused Nazia has been arrested and is in our custody while her husband is on the run. A search operation is on," said police. A case has been registered under sections 406, 420, 471 and 468 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
