The famous meteorologist Michelle Boss&nbsp;was on-air reporting the weather update in the 6pm programme. There were two screens on her one background. While one showed the weather report, the other one accidentally played a 13-seconds-long pornographic clip.<o:p></o:p>

Boss and her co-anchor, Cody Proctor, were unaware of what was happening on the screens behind their backs. The two reporters continued giving weather updates. The screen was quickly then switched to weather footage.<o:p></o:p>

As the network realised their mistake, they issued a public apology in their 11pm programme. "Those of us here at KREM 2 want to apologise for something that happened in our 6 pm newscast tonight," said the station. "An inappropriate video aired in the first part of the show. We are diligently working to make sure something like this doesn't happen again."<o:p></o:p>

After the broadcast, it was revealed that the channel has broken broadcast rules. Parents Television and Media Council&nbsp;(PTC) wrote a letter calling for action to the channel.<o:p></o:p>

“It is illegal to air indecent material between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. over the publicly-owned airwaves. As a licensee of the broadcast spectrum, a violation of the congressionally-mandated and FCC-enforced indecency law can warrant financial sanctions up to $325,000 per incident. The FCC has levied fines for similar such violations as the one KREM appears to have committed,” the letter by PTC President Tim Winter read.<o:p></o:p>

He also doubted that the clip was played by mistake and questioned why is it always obscene content that is played ‘by mistake’.<o:p></o:p>

“Let there be no suggestion that the airing of the pornographic content might have been an “accident” or a “mistake.” Someone with the wherewithal to pass that content through the control room did so intentionally. If it were not aired by someone’s design, why is it always porn that gets aired “by accident” instead of innocuous content?” Winter said.<o:p></o:p>

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is planning to use artificial intelligence in weather forecasting, especially for issuing nowcasts, which can help improve 3-6 hours prediction of extreme weather events, its Director General Mrutunjay Mohapatra said on Sunday.

He said the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning is not as prevalent as it is in other fields and it is relatively new in the area of weather forecasting.

The IMD has invited research groups who can study how artificial intelligence (AI) be used for improving weather forecasting and the Ministry of Earth Sciences is evaluating their proposals, Mohapatra said.

He said the IMD is also planning to do collaborative studies on this with other institutions.

The IMD uses different tools like radars, satellite imagery, to issue nowcasts, which gives information on extreme weather events occurring in the next 3-6 hours.&nbsp;

The IMD issues forecasts for extreme weather events like thunderstorms, dust storms. Unlike cyclones, predictions of thunderstorms, which also bring lightning, squall and heavy rains, are more difficult as the extreme weather events develop and dissipate in a very short period of time.

Last month, over 160 people died due to lightning alone in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

The IMD wants to better the nowcast predictions through AI and machine learning.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the US announced new strategies this year to expand the agency's application of four emerging science and technology focus areas -- NOAA Unmanned Systems, artificial intelligence, Omics, and the cloud -- to guide transformative advancements in the quality and timeliness of NOAA science, products and services.

Omics is a suite of advanced methods used to analyse material such as DNA, RNA, or proteins.

With regards to AI, it said the overarching goal of the NOAA Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy is to utilise AI to advance NOAA's requirements-driven mission priorities.

The NOAA said through this, it seeks to reduce the cost of data processing, and provide higher quality and more timely scientific products and services for societal benefits.&nbsp;

IMD plans to use AI in weather forecasting

The 145-year-old India Meteorological Department &nbsp;(IMD) has launched its first app for the general public. This application will be called 'Mausam' and will provide its users with weather updates.&nbsp;

The application will also include radar-based forecasts updated every 10 minutes. The IMD already has another app called 'Meghdoot', however, it was meant for farmers only.&nbsp;

Mausam offers five services to users– current temperature, humidity, wind speed and wind direction for 200 cities and the information is updated eight times a day. It will also provide information on the sunrise, sunset, moonrise and moonset, three hourly warnings of local weather phenomena and their intensity issued for about 800 stations and will forecast the weather for 450 cities around the country.&nbsp;

The app will alert users twice a day to warn them of any intense weather phenomena, and station-wise radar forecasts updated every 10 minutes.

The alert will be issued for the next five days in colour code (red, orange and yellow).&nbsp;

The application was developed jointly by ICRISAT’s Digital Agriculture and Youth team, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune, and IMD.

The application will be launched on Monday on the occasion of its foundation day and it will be available on Playstore and Appstore.&nbsp;

"IMD informed that the Cyclone, currently over east-central Arabian Sea is moving west and north-westwards and is likely to intensify further till 5th November morning. It will thereafter weaken and cross the Gujarat and Maharashtra coast by midnight of 6th November and early morning of 7th November 2019," a government statement read. 
 
It further stated that heavy rainfall, accompanied by winds reaching upto 90 to 100 kmph and tidal waves up to 1.5 metres, are expected in several areas. 
 
The meeting was attended by senior officials of the Ministries of Home, Defence, IMD, NDMA and NDRF. Chief Secretaries of Gujarat and Maharashtra along with officers from the UT Administration participated in the meeting. 
 
According to the government, the Chief Secretaries of Gujarat and Maharashtra have informed that necessary preparations have been made by them. NDRF and SDRF teams along with Coast Guard and Naval ships have already been positioned to withstand the onset of the cyclone. 
 
"The district authorities have been put on alert and all fishing activities have been suspended in the area. Daman and Diu Administration also apprised of their preparedness and evacuation plans," the statement read.

Delhi: After hottest day of the season; Met predicts rain by Wednesday

After recording highest temperature of the season in the national capital, a heatwave warning has been issued by the Indian Meteorological Department on Tuesday for the next five days.

Along with Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh could also face severe heatwave condition.

According to the warning, the maximum temperature may shoot up to 48 degrees Celsius.

Delhi recorded the hottest day on Monday with the mercury touching 44 degrees. The minimum temperature of the day was recorded at 26 degrees in the morning.

Heatwave is considered if maximum temperature of a station reaches at least 40 degrees Celsius or more for Plains, 37 degrees Celsius or more for coastal stations and at least 30 degrees Celsius or more for Hilly regions.&nbsp

As per the IMD statement, Uttar Pradesh may witness dust storms along with thunderstorm.

A week back Delhi was hit by dust and thunderstorms which gave Delhiites relief from the heat, the temperature, however, is climbing ever since.

The storms took lives of over 100 people and several were injured. Heavy property damage was also reported.

On Tuesday, Delhi temperature hit 44 degrees Celsius by 4:30 in the evening.

The issued warning of heatwave has put millions of residents of these states at the risk of illness caused by heat such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

People are advised to take precautionary measures to avoid such illness.

IMD issues heatwave warning in Delhi for next five days

A thick cloud of toxic smog 10 times the recommended limit enveloped India&rsquo;s capital New Delhi on Monday, as government officials struggled to tackle a public health crisis that is well into its second week.

A U.S. embassy measure showed levels of poisonous airborne particles, known as PM 2.5, had reached 495 on Monday morning, compared with the upper limit of &ldquo;good&rdquo; quality air at 50.

India&rsquo;s weather office said forecast rain over the next three days could help clear the smog.

&ldquo;Light rainfall is likely in states surrounding Delhi and in Delhi over the next three days, and this could result in a change in wind pattern in the region,&rdquo; Charan Singh, a scientist at India Meteorological Department, told Reuters. &ldquo;Smog will start to abate starting tomorrow.&rdquo;

The Delhi state government declared a public health emergency last week after pollution levels in the city spiked, a yearly phenomenon blamed on a combination of illegal crop burning in northern states, vehicle exhausts, and dust.

Over the weekend, the government said it planned to use fire trucks to spray water in parts of the capital, but the moves have had little effect.

A senior central government official said there was little more the government could do.

&ldquo;We can only do this much, and now we will have to wait for rains to clean the atmosphere,&rdquo; said Prashant Gargava, an official at the Central Pollution Control Board, a central body.

Gargava, who is in-charge of monitoring air quality, said Delhi&rsquo;s air has been consistently in the &ldquo;hazardous&rdquo; zone, despite measures such as a halt to construction and increasing car parking charges four-fold to encourage people to use public transportation.

The PM 2.5 airborne particles are about 30 times finer than a human hair. The particles can be inhaled deep into the lungs, causing respiratory diseases and other ailments. The Met department forecast heavy to very heavy showers in north coastal Tamil Nadu till tomorrow.

It said yesterday&#39;s low pressure area over Sri Lanka and adjoining south West Bay of Bengal now lies over South West Bay of Bengal off the Lankan and Tamil Nadu coast.

&quot;Rainfall activity will continue over north coastal Tamil Nadu with heavy to very heavy rain over Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chennai districts during the next 24 hours,&quot; a special bulletin issued at 8.30 am said today.

The mild, intermittent showers post noon yesterday became moderate and then heavy in some pockets last night inundating several more neighbourhoods including West Mambalam and the Guindy Industrial Estate.

As a result, bus, taxi, auto and suburban train services were affected.

While heavy waterlogging hindered free movement of vehicles, a &quot;signalling snag,&quot; hit train services between the St Thomas Mount and Kodambakkam suburban section since 9.30 pm. Services were restored at 3.20 am today, Railway officials said.

Heavy traffic congestion and serpentine queue of vehicles were seen at the arterial Kathipara grade separator, Guindy intersection, Saidapet and all along till Velachery through the Raj Bhavan point.

Flight operations at the city airport were normal, airport officials said.

Chennai and Nungambakkam registered 18 cm rain and Meenambakkam in the southern suburb recorded 14 cm, till 8.30 am today, according to the Met department.

After instructing schools to shut an hour earlier on Monday, the government has declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Tuesday as the met office forecast heavy to very heavy rains in some areas of coastal districts, including the capital city and its neighbourhood, in the next 24 hours.&nbsp;

Many parts of Tamil Nadu received heavy rainfall yesterday, disrupting normal life.

One person was killed in Thanjavur district in a rain-related incident.&nbsp;

The rains&nbsp;caused traffic snarls and waterlogging in many parts of Chennai. Traffic in arterial GST Road and Anna Salai came to a grinding halt but there was also cheer as several parts of Chennai are hit by water scarcity.
