Three people were killed and two others suffered injuries in a mass shooting that took place in Washington DC, United States on Sunday (August 6), as per preliminary reports. 
 
Washington DC acting police Chief Pamela Smith said the officers of the district are investigating the shooting that took place in the southeast. 
 
“Let me be clear: this gun violence has to stop. It is incredibly frustrating, we know that someone in the community knows what happening,” Smith said while speaking to WTOP-FM, the commercial all-news radio station of Washington DC.

Responding to the shooting, the officers reached the intersection of Good Hope Road and 16th Street SE before 9 pm, WTOP-FM reported. As per Smith, the officers discovered five victims, four males and one female. 
 
Two males and a female succumbed to their injuries at the scene of the shooting. Two others were rushed to a local hospital and their conditions remain unknown.

“This kind of gun violence is not acceptable in the District of Columbia. This is not a war zone. We want our residents to feel safe,” Smith stated, speaking to WTOP-FM. He added that an investigation is being carried out and the officers are still searching for more victims in this case. 
 
“We realise that there may be others who may have been injured tonight. We’re asking you to come forward,” she stated.

Smith further appealed&nbsp;for help from the people&nbsp;in gathering information about what she termed as a 'disturbing fatal shooting'.

The executives plan to hold meetings with US officials to talk about market conditions, export controls and other matters affecting their businesses, one of the sources said. It was not immediately clear whom the executives would meet.

US officials are considering tightening export rules affecting high-performance computing chips and shipments to Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, sources told Reuters in June. At least four people were killed when a light aircraft with an unresponsive pilot crashed into the mountains of Virginia on Sunday (June 4). The authorities in the United States were forced to scramble F-16 fighter jets after a sonic boom that rocked the Washington DC metropolitan area. The sonic boom startled residents and rattled windows and walls for miles.&nbsp;

In the report, CNN mentioned that the first responders who arrived at the crash site said that the plane left a "crater". Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one of them said that it looked like the plane impacted the ground at a very steep angle.&nbsp;

The first responders said that there were four recognisable pieces of wreckage from the plane. As quoted, one said, "There was nothing really bigger than your arm." They also said that they found signs of human remains.&nbsp;

The Federal Aviation Administration, which was investigating the incident, said that the Cessna Citation slammed into the mountainous terrain Sunday afternoon some 275 kilometres southwest of the capital.&nbsp;

In a statement sent to news agency AFP, Virginia State Police said that first responders reached the site near the town of Staunton by foot some four hours after the crash. The state police said that "no survivors were located" and the search efforts were suspended.&nbsp;

The AFP report quoted an official as saying that President Joe Biden was briefed on the incident. Biden was at the White House and also played golf on Sunday. The official didn't mention whether or not any emergency precautions were implemented.&nbsp;

North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said in a statement that the US military attempted to contact the pilot&nbsp;who was unresponsive until the Cessna crashed near the George Washington National Forest.&nbsp;

As reported by Reuters, a source familiar with the matter said that the Cessna appeared to be flying on autopilot.&nbsp;

The statement said, "The NORAD aircraft were authorised to travel at supersonic speeds and a sonic boom may have been heard by residents of the region." It added that NORAD aircraft also used flares in an attempt to the pilot's attention.

<h2>What exactly happened?&nbsp;</h2>

The FAA said that the civilian plane took off from Elizabethton, Tennessee bound for Long Island MacArthur Airport in New York. However, the flight tracking website Flightradar24 indicated it turned around after flying over Long Island. It was headed back south over Washington and into Virginia.&nbsp;

In a statement, the FAA said,&nbsp;"There were four people on board. The FAA and NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) will investigate." A preliminary accident report was expected later Monday.&nbsp;

As per public records, the aircraft was registered to Florida-based company Encore Motors of Melbourne. The owner of the company, John Rumpel, told The Washington Post that his "entire family" was on board, including his daughter, a grandchild and her nanny.&nbsp;

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one of them said that it looked like the plane impacted the ground at a very steep angle. The first responders said that there were four recognisable pieces of wreckage from the plane. As quoted, one said, "There was nothing really bigger than your arm." They also said that they found signs of human remains. The Federal Aviation Administration, which was investigating the incident, said that the Cessna Citation slammed into the mountainous terrain Sunday afternoon some 275 kilometres southwest of the capital. In a statement sent to news agency AFP, Virginia State Police said that first responders reached the site near the town of Staunton by foot some four hours after the crash. The state police said that "no survivors were located" and the search efforts were suspended. The AFP report quoted an official as saying that President Joe Biden was briefed on the incident. Biden was at the White House and also played golf on Sunday. The official didn't mention whether or not any emergency precautions were implemented. North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said in a statement that the US military attempted to contact the pilot who was unresponsive until the Cessna crashed near the George Washington National Forest. As reported by Reuters, a source familiar with the matter said that the Cessna appeared to be flying on autopilot. The statement said, "The NORAD aircraft were authorised to travel at supersonic speeds and a sonic boom may have been heard by residents of the region." It added that NORAD aircraft also used flares in an attempt to the pilot's attention. What exactly happened? The FAA said that the civilian plane took off from Elizabethton, Tennessee bound for Long Island MacArthur Airport in New York. However, the flight tracking website Flightradar24 indicated it turned around after flying over Long Island. It was headed back south over Washington and into Virginia. In a statement, the FAA said, "There were four people on board. The FAA and NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) will investigate." A preliminary accident report was expected later Monday. As per public records, the aircraft was registered to Florida-based company Encore Motors of Melbourne. The owner of the company, John Rumpel, told The Washington Post that his "entire family" was on board, including his daughter, a grandchild and her nanny. No arrests have been made in this case so far and further details are awaited.&nbsp;

This shooting in Washington DC comes a day after a bank worker in Louisville, Kentucky armed with a rifle shot dead five colleagues and wounded nine other people including two police officers at his workplace while live streaming the attack on social media. The police said that the shooter, identified as Connor Sturgeon, was fatally shot at the scene.&nbsp;

Police added that Sturgeon joined the downtown branch of the Old National Bank as a full-time employee last year.&nbsp;

The street will serve as "a constant reminder, a memorial to Jamal Khashoggi's memory that cannot be covered up," said Phil Mendelson, president of the District of Columbia Council that voted unanimously to rename the stretch of New Hampshire Avenue, reports AFP.

According to AP news agency, the renaming is ceremonial as signified by the brown street sign instead of the usual green. It won't impact the embassy's mailing address. But the sign will remain indefinitely.

Khashoggi’s fiancée Hatice Cengiz, who could not attend the ceremony, issued a statement which was read aloud during the street naming event.

She called on Biden to answer for his hypocrisy and to demand answers regarding the whereabouts of her fiance’s body.

The statement said, “Today, on this happy but very solemn occasion, I have two messages. My first message is to Jamal. Dear Jamal, the ideas and values you lost your life defending have been celebrated worldwide and continue to spread in the region and in the globe.

“My second message is to President Joe Biden. Mr Biden, you’ll soon visit Saudi Arabia&nbsp;as president, where you’ll meet with Jamal’s heartless executioner, dishonoring yourself and Jamal … Mr President, I beseech you not to lose your moral authority or overlook this heinous crime. You must uphold your vow to bring all the perpetrators of this brutal crime to justice.”
