This comes as Ukraine after its counteroffensive&nbsp;reportedly managed to regain some of its previously Russian-occupied territory and has maintained a significant force in the north.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian PM took to Telegram and said, “At the request of Kharkiv and Chernihiv...we are allocating 911.5 million hryvnias ($24.7 million) for Kharkiv and 363 million ($9.8 million) for Chernihiv to build military engineering and fortification structures.”&nbsp;

The Chernihiv region that borders Russia and Belarus was partially occupied at the beginning of Moscow’s all-out invasion of Kyiv, in February 2022, but it was reportedly later liberated.&nbsp;

Speaking to the news agency, Mikkel Morch, founder of crypto-focused investment fund ARK36, said,&nbsp;"It will enhance Russia's ability to evade sanctions".

Following the launch of its military offensive, Russia was at the receiving end of many sanctions, including ones that banned many Russian banks from the main system used for international transactions. This put Moscow in a vulnerable position and pushed the nation towards innovating ways to 'de-dollarise'.

Morch said that the digital currency will help Russia bypass banks and restrictions. Blockchain is "much less easy to sanction and attack," he said, adding that the launch is "part of a geopolitical war between pro-dollar countries and anti-dollar countries".

<h2>Concerns and more</h2>

As per Morch, the launch will give the government "immense control" over citizens and it could be used as "the ultimate social control tool."

Meanwhile, some NGOs have also voiced their concerns. AFP reports that the Atlantic Council has&nbsp;warned: "In the wrong hands, this data could be used to spy on citizens' private transactions."

Russians too are reportedly not convinced and remain sceptical. A survey by state-owned pollster VCIOM revealed that approximately six out of ten Russians have a "weak understanding" of the government's motives and are hesitant to embrace the currency.

In a bid to bolster war-torn Ukraine's "immediate battlefield needs and longer-term security assistance requirements", the United States's Department of Defense (DoD) on Monday (August 14th) announced a new arms and equipment aid package valued at around $200 million to help "Ukrainian armed forces in the fight to defend their country's sovereignty, territory, and people."&nbsp;

<h2>Continuing aid</h2>

As per the US Defence website, this latest instalment is the 44th "tranche of equipment to be provided from DoD inventories for Ukraine since August 2021."

"The United States will continue to work with its Allies and partners to provide Ukraine with capabilities to meet its immediate battlefield needs and longer-term security assistance requirements," says a statement on the Department of Defense website.

It comes as the Russia-Ukraine war crosses the 535-day mark. The assistance includes a variety of munitions, equipment, and weaponry, including additional munitions for Patriot air defence systems, extra ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), mine clearing equipment and systems, and both 155mm and 105mm artillery rounds.

Also included are 120mm tank ammunition; tube-launched, optically-tracked, wire-guided (TOW) missiles; Javelin and other anti-armour systems and rockets; 37 tactical vehicles to tow and haul equipment; 58 water trailers; over 12 million rounds of small arms ammunition and grenades; demolitions munitions for obstacle clearing; and spare parts, maintenance, and other field equipment.&nbsp;

According to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken speaking to the BBC, the Russian Wagner mercenary outfit is "taking advantage" of the unrest in Niger. A junta has been in charge of the nation since President Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown over two weeks ago.

US State Secretary Antony Blinken has claimed that Russian mercenary group Wagner is “taking advantage” of instability that has risen out of the coup in Niger.

There have been several media reports and also claims from ousted President Mohamed Bazoum that the military junta is being supported by the Wagner group.

Speaking to BBC on Tuesday (Aug 8), Blinken said he believes that the coup did not take place at the behest of either Russia or Wagner.

"I think what happened, and what continues to happen in Niger was not instigated by Russia or by Wagner, but... they tried to take advantage of it. Every single place that this Wagner group has gone, death, destruction and exploitation have followed," Blinken was quoted as saying. He added, “Insecurity has gone up, not down.”

It is estimated that around 5,000 Wagner troops are stationed across Africa. In 2021, they were deployed to neighbouring Mali following the breakdown of diplomatic talks with France.

The group's fighters have been accused of widespread human rights abuses in several African countries.

Despite this, there have been reports claiming that Niger's army has asked Wagner for assistance as the country faces the possibility of military intervention.

Bazoum, who is currently being detained, also expressed his concerns about Wagner's presence in Africa while writing an opinion piece for Washington Post last week.

"With an open invitation from the coup plotters and their regional allies, the entire central Sahel region could fall to Russian influence via the Wagner Group, whose brutal terrorism has been on full display in Ukraine," he wrote.

On Tuesday, Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin asked the coup leaders to "give us a call" in a voice message uploaded to Telegram, reports BBC.

On Tuesday, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu ordered the new sanctions through Nigeria's central bank, aimed at squeezing those involved in the takeover, a presidential spokesperson said.

An unspecified number of battle-hardened Wagner mercenaries remain in Belarus after Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to keep them away from Moscow -- to contain their rebellious influence -- after their failed insurrection against Moscow in late June 2023.

Meanwhile, Belarus also began its military wargames near its border with Poland. At the same time, Lukashenko has cautioned that he is constantly restraining the Wagner fighters who intend to attack Poland, a member of US-led NATO military alliance.

<h2>Wagner forces in Belarus</h2>

The move from Poland comes after Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko earlier on Tuesday (August 1) mockingly said that Wagner fighters stationed there were eager to “go on a trip to Warsaw,” a statement that sounded alarm bells in the NATO-member country.

It must be noted that an unspecified number of Wagner forces have moved to Belarus following the alleged mutiny episode in Russia.

They are said to have been training Lukashenko’s army in Belarus ever since.

During a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin last month, Lukashenko had jokingly said that some of the fighters were keen to press into Poland and Ukraine.&nbsp;

The Kremlin had earlier said he and some of Wagner's mercenaries would leave for Belarus.

Meanwhile, Prigozhin attended a meeting with Vladimir Putin last week in St Petersburg&nbsp;when the Russian president was hosting African leaders.&nbsp;

The news agency Reuters reported that a voice sounding like Prigozhin's said in the message: "Today we are defining our next tasks, whose outline is becoming clearer and clearer. Undoubtedly, these are tasks that will be carried out in the name of the greatness of Russia."&nbsp;

The audio was published on Grey Zone, a Telegram channel affiliated with Wagner.&nbsp;

In the audio message, Prigozhin said that most Wagner fighters were currently on leave, because "before that there was a long period of very hard work".&nbsp;He added that they have fought in some of the fiercest battles of the Ukraine war.

After the failed coup, the Kremlin said Wagner fighters who had not taken part would transfer to the regular army, signing contracts with the Defence Ministry.&nbsp;

"As long as we don't experience a shortage in personnel, we don't plan to carry out a new recruitment," Prigozhin said.

Last week, Prigozhin also said Wagner was ready to further increase its presence in Africa. Since the mutiny, some Wagner fighters have moved to Belarus and started training its army.&nbsp;

In Africa, Wagner's role is apparently a source of concern for Western governments as the United States has accused it of committing widespread atrocities and imposed sanctions on it as a criminal organisation, which they deny. Prigozhin even claimed that it works in line with the laws of the countries where it operates.&nbsp;

This comes weeks after Poland’s defence minister said that they are moving more than 1,000 troops to the east of the country amid concerns over the presence of Wagner fighters in the neighbouring country.&nbsp;

<h2>Polish PM’s warning</h2>

Morawiecki warned that the Wagner fighters – who are living in exile in Belarus after their chief Yevgeny Prigozhin aborted a mutiny in Russia – may engage in what Poland describes as “hybrid warfare,” where the Russian group's fighters&nbsp;in Belarus could facilitate illegal migration from Belarus, said the Polish PM. &nbsp;

The fighters could pose as migrants from the city of Grodno, close to the Polish and Lithuanian borders, and enter the European Union, said Morawiecki. Poland, a former Warsaw Pact member and now a member of the United States-led NATO military alliance, has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February 2022.&nbsp;

However, Warsaw has also expressed concerns about the possible spillover of the Ukraine war onto its territory.&nbsp;

“This is certainly a step towards a further hybrid attack on Polish territory,” he added. Notably, the Polish PM did not give a source of information that Wagner fighters were moving closer to Grodno.&nbsp;

However, given the location of the city, it may be potentially significant as it is near the Suwalki Gap, a strategic strip of 95 kilometres of land along the Polish-Lithuanian border, which divides Belarus, Russia’s ally, from the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad.

According to Morawiecki, there have been 16,000 attempts to cross the border between Belarus and Poland&nbsp;so far this year.&nbsp;

Now, a recent report by a publication run by an exiled Russian journalist has revealed disturbing information about Prigozhin, whose personal life has for long remained an enigma.

The Insider, which is run by Roman Dobrokhotov, in a recent report, has revealed shocking details about the mercenary boss' bedroom habits. Reportedly, he is very fond of having sex with young girls and virgins.

The Insider talked to a Russian woman identified only by the pseudonym 'Masha' who told the publication that when she was 18-years-old, she sold her virginity to Prigozhin, who at the time was 62-years-old.

The girls are reportedly housed in rooms at the Solo Sokos Hotel in St. Petersburg. Masha also shed light on the many eccentric habits of the man who was once known as 'Putin's Chef'.

Reportedly, he has sex with girls just a little over 18 years of age without using a condom, as he has an obsession with exchanging bodily fluids with the young girls. This, he&nbsp;believes, enhances his "vitality".

This information has reportedly been corroborated by a representative of a Russia-based sex workers' union. &nbsp;

Masha shared that she was introduced to Prigozhin's harem by a girl she met in a hospital.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 27 opened the second Russia-Africa summit — the first took place in 2019 — with a promise of tens of thousands of tonnes of free grain for six countries on the continent within months.

The promise comes as Moscow’s recent withdrawal from the Ukraine grain export deal triggered fears of shortages and skyrocketing prices. Instead, Putin may use the summit to push a plan to supply grain directly to Africa and cut Ukraine out of the global market.

Reacting to the free grain announcement, António Guterres, the UN secretary general, said a "handful of donations to some countries" would not correct the dramatic impact the end of the deal would have.

According to the SBU security service, the Ukrainian minister disguised his travel as a "business trip," raising suspicions about his motives and actions.&nbsp;

The case came to light after a news report exposed the MP's travel, leading to strong reactions from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who expressed vehement disapproval.

Following the investigation, authorities have now opened a case against Yuriy Aristov, who also held the position of deputy chairman of the Committee on National Security, Defence, and Intelligence on charges of forgery.&nbsp;

The charge, as per news agency AFP report citing the State Bureau of Investigation, could result in a prison sentence of up to three years.

<h2>Who is Vadim Ostanin?</h2>

Reuters reports that Ostanin was the head of opposition leader Navalny's office in Barnaul.&nbsp;

As per the jailed opposition leader's team, he carried out "legal political work".&nbsp;

Ostanin was detained in December 2021 and Navalny's team alleges that he was pressured by investigators to confess to being guilty. However, he refused.&nbsp;

AFP reports that he has now been sentenced in the Siberian city for "participating in an extremist" organisation. As Russia intensified its crackdown on people and organisations&nbsp;in dissent of the Russian President,&nbsp;Alexei Navalny's organisations were banned.

Ostanin, who is a trained lawyer, is now awaiting a verdict on the new "extremist" charges. If found guilty, he could see his jail term extended by another 20 years.

<h2>Russia's crackdown on Putin critics</h2>

Ever since the Russia-Ukraine war began with Russian President Vladimir Putin's announcement of a "special military operation" on February 24th, 2022, authorities in Moscow have clamped down heavily on any signs of dissent.

Taking the crackdown on freedom to a new level, as per AFP, Russia has shut down independent media and in 2021, as the crackdown intensified, Navalny's organisations were banned.

In a similar charge, earlier this month, Lilia Chanysheva, another ally of the jailed Kremlin critic, was sentenced to seven years and six months in prison. Chanysheva is the former coordinator of Navalny's headquarters in Ufa in central Russia.

This new case against the opposition leader comes amidst an escalated crackdown in Moscow, where over a year into the country's offensive in Ukraine, numerous key opposition figures, like Alexei Navalny, have been put behind bars or are in exile.

<h2>Rough treatment</h2>

Many jailed figures, including Navalny, have alleged that they're being kept in deplorable conditions. Ostanin too has described his detention in Barnaul as unsanitary, saying that there were insects and rodents like rats in his cell.&nbsp;

As per Navalny's team, Ostanin has lost some 15 kilogrammes (33 pounds) while in custody. He has allegedly also suffered from back and neck pain, and was denied access to medication for his ailments.

This new case against the opposition leader comes amidst an escalated crackdown in Moscow, where over a year into the country's offensive in Ukraine, numerous key opposition figures, like Alexei Navalny, have been put behind bars or are in exile. Rough treatment Many jailed figures, including Navalny, have alleged that they're being kept in deplorable conditions. Ostanin too has described his detention in Barnaul as unsanitary, saying that there were insects and rodents like rats in his cell. As per Navalny's team, Ostanin has lost some 15 kilogrammes (33 pounds) while in custody. He has allegedly also suffered from back and neck pain, and was denied access to medication for his ailments. Russian President Vladimir Putin for the first time met and held talks with his closest ally, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko&nbsp;since the latter played a major role in brokering a deal which led to the end of mutiny by Wagner fighters in Moscow last month.

On Sunday, a video posted by Lukashenko's press service showed that the two global leaders arrived together at Konstantinovsky palace in Saint Petersburg ahead of scheduled talks.

Putin said that his talks with Lukashenko will continue for two days. "I changed some of my plans," said Putin while meeting Lukashenko at Konstantinovsky Palace. "We will spend one and a half, two days (for talks)," Putin was quoted by the TASS news agency as saying.

During the meeting, Putin informed Lukashenko that an ongoing Ukrainian counteroffensive to push back forces of Russia from Ukraine has "failed", as per the Russian news agencies.

Despite claims that Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin has flown back to Russia, in a video on Wednesday, he was shown welcoming his fighters to Belarus.&nbsp;

He was also seen telling them that they would take no further part in the Ukraine war for now and that they have&nbsp;to gather their strength for Africa while they trained the Belarusian army.&nbsp;

The Belarusian defence ministry said on Thursday that the Wagner mercenaries had started to train Belarusian special forces at a military range just a few miles from the border with NATO member Poland.&nbsp;

Analysts have previously noted that any attack on a NATO member will be retaliated by the alliance as it is founded on the principle of collective defence, meaning that if one NATO ally is attacked, then all NATO allies are deemed to have been attacked.&nbsp;

They will attempt peace talks but if diplomatic efforts fail, it has the military power to undertake crisis-management operations.&nbsp;

Zbigniew Hoffmann told PAP: "Training or joint exercises of the Belarusian army and the Wagner Group is undoubtedly a provocation."&nbsp;

"The Committee analysed possible threats, such as the dislocation of Wagner Group units. Therefore, the Minister of National Defense, chairman of the Committee, Mariusz Blaszczak, decided to move our military formations from the west to the east of Poland," Hoffmann added.&nbsp;

A video going viral purportedly shows a man bearing resemblance to Prigozhin greeting the Wagner troops in Berlin, according to CNN.

“Welcome guys! I am happy to greet you all. Welcome to the Belarusian land! We fought with dignity! We have done a lot for Russia,” the&nbsp;man seeming like Prigozhin was quoted as saying in the video.

The clip was shared on pro-Wagner Telegram channels on Wednesday and then shared on Prigozhin’s account.

The video further shows a fighter purportedly addressing the man as “Yevgeny Viktorovich,” Prigozhin’s first name and patronymic.

While criticising the Russian Ministry of Defence, Prigozhin in the video said that his group would no longer participate in the Ukraine war and would instead “set off on a new journey to Africa.”

He further said that the group could return to Ukraine “when we will be confident that we will not be asked to make an embarrassment of ourselves and our experience.”

“What is happening now at the front is a disgrace in which we do not need to participate. We need to wait for the moment when we can prove ourselves fully,” Prigozhin said.

“Therefore, a decision was taken for us to station here in Belarus for some time. I am sure that during this time we will make the Belarusian army second greatest in the world. And if needed, we will defend them if it comes to it.”

“I want to ask everyone to really pay attention to the fact that Belarusians welcomed us not only as heroes, but also as brothers,” he added.

On June 24, Prigozhin announced a coup against the Kremlin after growing discontent with the top Russian defence officials.

The mercenary groups took control of Rostov-on-Don—one of Russia’s largest cities—but did not proceed further saying that they want to avoid “shedding Russian blood” and agreed to live in exile in Belarus.

Initially, Putin accused the group of treason and sought to eliminate Prigozhin, once Putin’s ally, but Lukashenko claimed to have intervened in the matter, and negotiated a peace deal between the two.

As per an official statement, the sanctions target 13 individuals and businesses linked to the actions of Wagner including executions and torture in Mali and the CAR and threats to peace and security in Sudan. "This includes three designations for the mercenary group’s top officials in Mali and CAR, including the ‘right-hand man’ of Yevgeny Prigozhin, who deliberately targeted civilians in their operations," the statement said. "A further five businesses and individuals involved in threatening peace and stability in Sudan, including through disinformation campaigns and providing military equipment, have been targeted," it added. The government said the sanctions would limit the financial freedom of these individuals and businesses by preventing British citizens, companies and banks from dealing with them, alongside freezing any assets held in the United Kingdom (UK) and travel bans. Wagner members under the radar The statement said that Wagner's head in Mali, Ivan Aleksandrovitch Maslov is a target of these sanctions. " Wagner mercenaries, alongside Malian forces, massacred at least 500 people in Moura in March 2022, including summary executions as well as rape and torture," the statement further said. In Sudan, the group has provided weapons and military equipment.
