A volcano has erupted in Iceland's Reykjanes peninsula, spewing hot lava, toxic gases and ash into the air, amid fears that this could be the start of another long period of volcanic activity in the Nordic country.&nbsp;

This is the sixth eruption since last December in&nbsp;Reykjanes, which is&nbsp;known for frequent volcanic activity.

“A volcanic eruption has begun. A fissure has opened east of Sylingarfell,” the Icelandic meteorological office (IMO) said in a statement, adding that the eruption had started at 9.26pm local time on Thursday (Aug 22) after a series of earthquakes.

The length of the eruptive fissure was nearly 3.9 km, according to IMO. "The lava flow continues both to the east and west towards Grindavíkurvegur. No lava flow is observed to the south towards Grindavík," it said in an update.

The last major volcanic activity in Iceland lasted till June 22, after an eruption that lasted 24 days.

Scientists are warning that the Reykjanes could face repeated events for decades or even centuries, The Guardian said in a report.

There were nine eruptions on the peninsula since 2021 after geological systems that had been dormant for 800 years were reactivated.

The IMO had warned for weeks that another eruption was likely.

It said the seismic activity indicated a buildup of pressure to magma accumulation under Svartsengi.

Svartsengi has a power plant that supplies&nbsp;electricity and water to the peninsula. The power plant, which has been evacuated last December and is operated remotely, is safe and air and land travel is unaffected in the area as of now.

The volcano, which is located some 30 miles (48.28 kilometres) southwest of Reykjavik,&nbsp;Iceland's&nbsp;capital, sits on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

Sundhnukagigar has been erupting for about four weeks. As per AFP, on March 16, lava burst out of a crack in the ground and has been flowing ever since.

According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office's&nbsp;(IMO)&nbsp;most recent measurements from April 9, it was pumping out some 3.6 cubic metres of lava per second.

"It's continuing at a pretty stable rate at the moment, and we don't see any real signs that it will end in the near future," IMO geophysicist Benedikt Ofeigsson told AFP.

The volcanic activity was reawakened in March 2021, when an eruption near Mount Fagradalsfjall lasted six months, reports AFP.

Magma, as per the report, is making its way through the Earth's upper crust from a depth of at least 10 kilometres (6.21 miles). Additionally, ground rising, also known as inflation, has been observed in the nearby area of Svartsengi, where a geothermal plant that provides electricity and water to 30,000 people on the peninsula is located.

The inflation&nbsp;as per geophysicist Benedikt Ofeigsson suggests that "all the magma coming from this depth doesn't have the capacity to go straight to the surface (and) is partly stored in this magma storage in Svartsengi."

Iceland's capital on alert as 2,200 earthquakes raise concerns of imminent volcanic eruption

Authorities in Guatemala scrambled to evacuate thousands&nbsp;of people after Central America's most active volcano, often known as the ‘Volcano of Fire’, erupted on Thursday (May 4). Firefighters said residents of the hamlet of Panimache were taken to shelters, reported the Associated Press.&nbsp; 
 
Civil protection official Oscar Cossio said 1,054 people had been evacuated from five communities near the foot of the volcano, and moved to a sports hall for shelter, reported news agency AFP. The number is said to increase&nbsp;as a full accounting of the evacuees was carried out, he added.&nbsp;

A civil protection official Rodolfo Garcia told AFP that had previously said some 350 residents were evacuated from communities near the foot of the volcano which was seen spewing thick clouds of ash over farms and towns not far from the capital city.

According to the country’s disaster agency, the volcano could affect as many as 100,000 people in communities around the peak. Red-hot rock and ash were seen flowing down the slopes toward an area devastated by a deadly 2018 eruption which killed nearly 200 people.&nbsp;

The Guatemalan Conred disaster centre has also said that the volcano named Fuego, Spanish for “fire,” was sending out “pyroclastic flows,” which is a high-temperature mix of gas, ash and rock fragments. The ash column ejected by Fuego reached more than 6,000 metres above sea level, reported AFP.&nbsp;

The ash, as per the disaster agency, is falling to the west and southwest of the volcano and stronger emissions could follow as the “high level” eruption continues. Furthermore, officials have also expressed concerns about the rainfall forecast which could lead to mudslides. According to Garcia, 13 emergency shelters had opened in four nearby towns, capable of providing refuge to 7,600 people.&nbsp;

However, the official also told AFP, that as many as 130,000 people live within areas exposed to falling ash which travelled as far as 100 kilometres from the crater. The transit police have also released photos showing autos and motorcycles stopped along highways to avoid getting bogged down in fallen ash, said the news agency.&nbsp;

When Fuego, the 3,763-metre tall volcano, erupted last December, it forced Guatemalan authorities to temporarily close the country’s largest airport.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the authorities, as per media reports, have also expressed concern over lahars, a mixture of ash, rock, mud and debris, that can bury entire towns. Lahars were flowing down four of the seven gullies on the volcano’s flanks, reported the AP, citing the country’s disaster agency.&nbsp;

Nevado del Ruiz volcano is a 17,400-foot (5,300-meter) colossus volcano in Western Columbia. The heat from the 1985 eruption melted the snow that caps mountains in surrounding areas; triggering a mudslide which as per AFP "swallowed" the town of Armero and killed around half of its population of 50,000.

Colombia’s Nevado del Ruiz volcano, which killed 25,000 in 1985, ready for ‘bigger than any’ eruption

The Shiveluch volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East has increased its activity and is now in danger of erupting violently, the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team said on Sunday.

"As growth of the lava dome continues, a strong fumaroles activity, an incandescence of the lava dome, explosions, and hot avalanches accompanies this process,"&nbsp;the observatory said on its website.

"Ash explosions up to 10-15 kilometres (9.32 miles) ... could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft."

The head of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/iaea-confirms-russian-accusation-of-ukraine-shelling-zaporizhzhia-nuclear-plant-535818">Russian</a> Academy of Sciences' Far East Branch Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Alexei Ozerov, was quoted by Russia's official news agency, RIA, as saying that the volcano's dome is extremely hot.

Shiveluch, one of Kamchatka's biggest volcanoes with a summit elevation of 3,283 metres (10,771 feet), is also one of the peninsula's most active, with an estimated 60 major eruptions over the course of the last 10,000 years.

NASA reports that the most recent and most violent eruption of the volcano occurred in 2007.

On Wednesday, Mount Aso erupted, spewing ash thousands of meters into the sky as hikers rushed away from the popular tourist site.

The last time the JMA raised its warning for Aso to the three-out-of-five level was when it erupted in 2016.

There has been an increase in volcanic activity there in the past few days, including a small eruption on Thursday.

Mount Aso's massive caldera dominates the southwestern main island of Kyushu, where the 1,592-meter (5,223-foot) volcano is a popular tourist destination.

Experts say Anak Krakatau emerged around 1928 in the caldera of Krakatau, a volcanic island that violently erupted in 1883.

With subsequent lava flows it grew from a submarine setting to become a small volcanic island, with the cone now standing at an altitude of around 300 metres (1,000 feet) above sea level.

Since its birth, Anak Krakatau has been in a "state of semi-continuous eruptive activity", growing bigger as it experiences eruptions every two to three years, volcanology professor Ray Cas from Monash University in Australia told AFP.

"Most of the eruptions are relatively small on the scale of explosive eruptions ... and there's also eruptions that produce lava flows," he added.

Cas said the latest event appeared to be "a relatively small explosive eruption" but could then have triggered or coincided with a submarine event like a landslide or earthquake, causing the deadly tsunami.

No one lives on the island, but the peak is popular with tourists and is a major study area for volcanologists.

The island is part of the Ujung Kulon National Park, "demonstrating on-going evolution of geological processes", since the Krakatau eruption, UNESCO says on its World Heritage site listing for the area.

An eruption could be imminent at a volcano belching huge plumes of smoke on Indonesia&#39;s resort island of Bali, officials warned Monday, as they raised the alert to the highest level and increased the exclusion zone.

Huge plumes of smoke have been pouring out of Mount Agung since Tuesday and senior state volcanologist Gede Suantika said it was belching thick grey smoke more than two miles (three kilometers) into the sky early Monday.

&quot;The volcano&#39;s alert level has been raised to the highest level,&quot; said Suantika. &quot;Constant tremors can be felt.&quot;

The exclusion zone around the volcano, which is 75 kilometres (47 miles) from the tourist hub of Kuta, has been widened to 10 kilometers, with people living in the exclusion zone being urged to evacuate.

About 25,000 people living nearby the mountain have already left their homes and evacuated since Mount Agung first started to spew smoke Tuesday.

&quot;Continuous ash puffs are sometimes accompanied by explosive eruptions accompanied by a weak sound of boom,&quot; the National Board for Disaster Management said in a statement.

&quot;The rays of fire are increasingly observed at night. This indicates the potential for a larger eruption is imminent.&quot;

National disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho called for people to stay calm.

&quot;As we have widened the exclusion zone, so the number of people evacuating will increase but we don&#39;t have the latest data yet,&quot; he told AFP.

&quot;Most important is always to follow our instructions and keep calm,&quot; he added.

Ash from Mount Agung has been covering villages nearby the volcano. Officials have distributed thousands of face masks to local residents.

The airport in Bali&#39;s capital Denpasar, a top holiday destination that attracts millions of foreign tourists every year, has been closed.

&quot;Bali&#39;s airport has indeed been closed. We&#39;re still coordinating the next steps,&quot; airport spokesman Arie Ahsanurrohim told AFP.

The closure is set to affect tens of thousands of passengers, he added.

The airport on Lombok island -- also a popular tourist destination east of Bali -- has been closed since Sunday afternoon as the ash from Mount Agung headed into that direction, but it reopened early Monday.

The Australian government put out a travel advisory Sunday instructing travellers to exercise a high degree of caution in Indonesia and follow the instructions of authorities.

Mount Agung last erupted in 1963, killing about 1,600 people.

It rumbled back to life in September and authorities raised the alert to the highest level, forcing 140,000 people living nearby to evacuate.

The volcano&#39;s activity decreased in late October and many people returned to their home as the alert was lowered to the second-highest level.

But Mount Agung started rumbling again last Tuesday.

The mountain sent smoke up into the air on Saturday for the second time in a week in what volcanologists call a phreatic eruption -- one which is caused by the heating and expansion of groundwater.

Dozens of Balinese Hindus took part in ceremonies near the volcano on Sunday, offering prayers in the hope of preventing an eruption.

Officials later on Sunday said the activity could be a magmatic eruption -- one which involves the decompression of gas and results in the spewing of ash -- and advised people near the mountain to wear masks.&nbsp;

Mount Agung is one of more than 120 active volcanoes extending the length of Indonesia, which straddles the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Mount Agung was belching thick grey smoke as high as 3,400 metres early Monday

An eruption could be imminent at a volcano belching huge plumes of smoke on Indonesia's resort island of Bali, officials warned Monday, as they raised the alert to the highest level and increased the exclusion zone. Huge plumes of smoke have been pouring out of Mount Agung since Tuesday and senior state volcanologist Gede Suantika said it was belching thick grey smoke more than two miles (three kilometers) into the sky early Monday. "The volcano's alert level has been raised to the highest level," said Suantika. "Constant tremors can be felt." The exclusion zone around the volcano, which is 75 kilometres (47 miles) from the tourist hub of Kuta, has been widened to 10 kilometers, with people living in the exclusion zone being urged to evacuate. About 25,000 people living nearby the mountain have already left their homes and evacuated since Mount Agung first started to spew smoke Tuesday. "Continuous ash puffs are sometimes accompanied by explosive eruptions accompanied by a weak sound of boom," the National Board for Disaster Management said in a statement. "The rays of fire are increasingly observed at night. This indicates the potential for a larger eruption is imminent." 'Keep calm' National disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho called for people to stay calm. "As we have widened the exclusion zone, so the number of people evacuating will increase but we don't have the latest data yet," he told AFP. "Most important is always to follow our instructions and keep calm," he added. Ash from Mount Agung has been covering villages nearby the volcano. Officials have distributed thousands of face masks to local residents. The airport in Bali's capital Denpasar, a top holiday destination that attracts millions of foreign tourists every year, has been closed. "Bali's airport has indeed been closed. We're still coordinating the next steps," airport spokesman Arie Ahsanurrohim told AFP. The closure is set to affect tens of thousands of passengers, he added. The airport on Lombok island -- also a popular tourist destination east of Bali -- has been closed since Sunday afternoon as the ash from Mount Agung headed into that direction, but it reopened early Monday. The Australian government put out a travel advisory Sunday instructing travellers to exercise a high degree of caution in Indonesia and follow the instructions of authorities. Mount Agung last erupted in 1963, killing about 1,600 people. It rumbled back to life in September and authorities raised the alert to the highest level, forcing 140,000 people living nearby to evacuate. The volcano's activity decreased in late October and many people returned to their home as the alert was lowered to the second-highest level. But Mount Agung started rumbling again last Tuesday. The mountain sent smoke up into the air on Saturday for the second time in a week in what volcanologists call a phreatic eruption -- one which is caused by the heating and expansion of groundwater. Dozens of Balinese Hindus took part in ceremonies near the volcano on Sunday, offering prayers in the hope of preventing an eruption. Officials later on Sunday said the activity could be a magmatic eruption -- one which involves the decompression of gas and results in the spewing of ash -- and advised people near the mountain to wear masks. Mount Agung is one of more than 120 active volcanoes extending the length of Indonesia, which straddles the Pacific Ring of Fire.
